    • @jak7139
      @jak7139 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +50

      That's true of most stories. If you can justify the cool, then it tends to work better than having no explanation. See Davy Jones in POTC. Davy Jones is, at the end of the day, a cool pirate design with tentacle beard, peg leg, kraken, etc. But the explanation of him cutting out his heart, his love, and slowly losing his humanity, turning him into a cruel villain makes it work.

      How to Fix Star Wars:
      1) Make it cool

    Particularly when it came to the Prequels I *do* genuinely think they thought about the battles being of body, mind, and will/soul. I'm unsure it's ever explicitly stated but it's heavilly implied multiple times that there is more going on than just the physical fighting and that fits absolutely perfectly in recontextualizing the OT battle between Obi-Wan and Vader, even the way the shots are held implies that there are deeply powerful things going on underneath the surface from the begining and this further context just cements that. Having said that I think it's a big missed opertunity for Star Wars media to not have attempted to visualise or at least narrate this unseen battle for viewers during a fight as it could lead to some spectacular depth and it'd be very compelling. I suppose it'd be somewhat difficult to do without it being tacky but I think they could manage it so long as they were very careful and respectful of the force in doing so

    • @andrewmalinowski6673
      @andrewmalinowski6673 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      It's also likely that as a visual media part of the draw of Star Wars was the swordfight-like combat between Obi-Wan and Vader or Vader and Luke, if showing the non-action aspect of the Force it seems less "impressive" to a casual observer. The fact it was partially using the Force against each other makes sense during both Ep.V and Ep.VI when Vader either tries to throw Luke off-balance by throwing objects at him or reading his thoughts; "Sister, so you have a twin sister. Your feelings for her have made ou weak."

  • @Umbreona

    The thing about the Jedi combat is shown in the Clone Wars Cartoon series very well where it is shown how Grievous only handled Force wielders so well by breaking them with fear before he attacked. Duku even warns him NOT to engage a Jedi until he has disbalanced them or he would lose.

    "Ah. So, when I fight a Force-muggle like Cad Bane or Jango Fett, I should just disarm them with the Force rather than be drawn into a long fight that could affect the fate of the galaxy if I lose?"
    "....."

    Both the Thrawn and Dark Empire Trilogies also make a point about the limitations of using the Force. C'Boath and Luuke Both die to Mara because the former overextended himself with his need to mentally control all the clones on Wayland. The Resurrected Emperor loses control of his own Force Storm when Luke and Leia envelop him with the Light of the Force.

    #ASKECK I've often considered one of the differences between the light side and the dark side of the force to be that when using the light side you're negotiating with the force, asking or even pleading for a particular outcome, while using the dark side you're being more forceful, demanding or maybe even ordering a particular outcome. But I'd love to hear your take on this, whether I've got it right or if I'm completely off base.

    Star Wars battle front 2 (2018) gives a decent depiction on using the force in combat and why Jedi a Sith don’t just spam it. The game portrays forces users as having certain amount of force reserves at a given moment and would have to wait to build up their strength again after using it. It’s risky as it not guaranteed to work given that an opponent can parry your force attack with their own. Because of this, it’s normally always a back-and-forth between two duelist, constantly trying to find openings.

    #AskEck Why aren't astromech droids used more to fill more roles on larger larger ships? I don't mean for weapons systems, but for piloting, and whatnot. It would cut down on the amount of manpower typically required, and should theoretically work because astromechs are show to be able to interface a ship's central computer. So wouldn't it just be easier overall if you could just order one droid to increase power to the engines from the bridge, instead of having to relay the order to several people through comms?

    In the case of Plaugeis's near death at the hands of non-Forceful assassins, they were exceptional at their art and trained to combat force users. Tho they initially went expecting one of their targets was a Force user, being the professionals they are treating every assignment with the same lethal efficiency, they cooly execute their infiltration of the Canted Circle without telegraphing their intent. Their emotions are controlled. Their thoughts aren't wandering. By the time he realizes something is amiss, they have already struck.
    Plagueis for his part is distracted and so arrogantly confident in his upcoming ascension in the galaxy he hadn't even considered an attack possible. He was also in a position where revealing his power was a risk, so public use of the Force was something they (The Rule of Two Sith) considered a last resort with consequences that would have to be addressed. Such as making sure there were no witness, unless vetted in the in.
    So the Maladians got the jump on him and caught him with blows that would have been lethal for any non force user without his level of control over his own physiology. And once he counter attacked they adjusted their tactics and target priority. He may have been eventually overwhelmed if not for the timely arrival of Sate Pestage (or was it Doriana?) and the Echani Sun Guard.

    #AskEck Not necessarily a question, but I'm curious about your thoughts on this:
    I don't know any specific lore on force powers or lightsabers, but I have a couple theories on why they seem so inconsistent. For the force, I imagine that "grabbing" an object is more like putting a barrier in space, rather than honing in on a specific object. So grabbing a starfighter for example would be a lot harder than looking at the ship and grabbing it; you have to know where it is going to be by the time you achieve the focus to put up that barrier.
    This wasn't addressed but I kind of want to talk about it anyway: Why do they spin their lightsabers so much? I think of lightsabers as less being bats and more like unwieldy magnet-thrusters that are always exerting a force (no pun intended) on your hand. If you hold it wrong, it'd feel really heavy. To keep their momentum going, it's way more efficient to swing and spin it around than to put in the energy to stop it from moving. You can even see when Grievous turns on his lightsabers in RotS that his arms react to them turning on.
    Of course, all of this is my own headcanon. I assume canon/old canon have a completely different explanation that kyber crystals like spinning because that's a good trick.

    The best way to take down super star destroyers was actually heavy fighters. SSDs would have a lot of turbolasers and thus lack sufficient weaponry to combat smaller ships. So x-wings could get in, destroy all the hard points, and turn a Bellator into a useless massive floating hunk of metal. Yes you could slap regular laser cannons onto an SSD, but then it'd do poorly against larger ships like Mon Calamari cruisers. So why build an SSD when several smaller and cheaper ships like Victory-class frigates, or IPVs could be spammed out to defend planets and instillations?

    Force Shield as retconed later, and actually never became official canon. Question first appeared about Luke's duel with Vader on Bespin , i.e. why Vader didn't choke Luke and why Luke didn't destroy Vader's breathing apparatus. There was also question why someone didn't use Force against general Grevious , when Mace Windu did crush Grievous lungs in one episode of Clone Wars mini-series etc .. Millennium Falcon, or ESPECIALLY Crucible would be amazing as well. There's a lotta lore that I have trouble summarizing in them and, especially with Lost Tribes and Millennium Falcon, wild and somewhat outlandish subplots that tie into thousands of years of stories and widen aspects of the force and create that sense of mystery of the force I experienced when reading the Old Republic stories for the first time and seeing all the force abilities. Hell Millennium Falcon even explains why you can see it in episode 3 going to the senate building. I know that's a lot, but any of this would be content I haven't really seen covered before.

    Yeah, that's what I think was cool about Yoda and the Emperor in the original movies that got lost in the prequels. They absolutely looked like they were so powerful that they could just use the force however they needed in a fight and not have to use lightsabers at all. I think it would have been much cooler to have them not need them, but instead we get BeyBlade Palpatine and crazy jumping Yoda.

    • @toastyrules8221

      But Yoda wouldn't use the force that offensively, as it went against the "teachings of the Jedi" whereas Palpatine used his sadism and hatred for the Jedi to the fullest in his technique.
      I get that it was cartoonishly over the top, but i wouldn't want it any other way. Them both just duking it out with the Force alone couldn't have happend, as Palpatine was very aware that this was the area he didn't had the upper hand in fighting Yoda and so their lightsabre duel was necessary for plot reasons.

    I know it's sci-fi, but is there an in-universe explanation as to why people don't just go flying when a ship enters/exits hyperspace? People dont seem to be strapped in, so when a ship accelerates or deccelaretes due to hyperspace, you'd think everyone would be smashing against their ships' walls.

    My head canon was that lightsabers were made so force users could more easily kill other force users who had the ability to counter force powers. Sorry, I haven't read enough extended universe stuff to know if there's evidence in favor or against this head canon 😔

    I always wondered why General Grievous even presented a formidable threat to the Jedi in the first place. He has no Force abilities and is just highly trained in lightsaber combat by Count Dooku.
    Why didn't the Jedi simply use the Force to mess with him? Lift him up into the air to immobilize him, toss and slam him around like a ragdoll, pin him against walls and ceilings, or Force push him off cliffs? Or simply turn off his lightsaber blades repeatedly or rip the hilts out of his hands from a safe distance? How about using the Force to whip his cape up and wrap around his head to blind him or snare and trip up his robotic body? He had no Force abilities at all to counter these tactics or form an anti-Force bubble to surround himself with.
    I literally had fan boys in the Star Wars Reddit tell me with a straight face that it's because I "lack imagination" (despite my giving lots of various imaginative ways one could use the Force to mess with Grievous) but then fail to elaborate why the above tactics wouldn't work on Grievous. Make it make sense, lol.
    Is his cyborg body made of a special metal that automatically nullifies the Force? Does his alien species naturally form an anti-Force field around their bodies? But Grievous is just a brain, eyes, and pair of lungs at this point. Is that enough of his original biological cell mass left remaining to form an anti-Force bubble?

      Nick gillard the stunt coordinator for the prequels openly in interviews acknowledges he wasn’t going for realism. His criticism of other Star Wars media duels is actually that they focus on realism too much. Nicks a stunt director/performer first. When developing any fight scene is main focus is performer safety followed by what’s best cinematically
      You can also watch the prequel duels and notice they aim for sabers and pre determined clash points. Go watch duel of fates at half speed.

    Was there every any "Operation Valkyrie" (from ww2) style conspiracies against Vader or Palpatine from within the imperial military. There must certainly have been more than enough resentment given Vaders/Palpatines interference in military matters, terrible plans (falcon tracking beacon), personal obsessions and executions. The only true success the Empire had in the films was the one in which Vader had the least to do with at Hoth.

    #AskEck I was wondering about your thoughts on a couple of in-universe explanatory theories regarding technology that I've cobbled together from online and from my own thoughts;
    1: That the Old Republic game setting (Great Wars era) looks so similar to the OG 6 movies aesthetically because of a rumored "Dark Age" between that time and the Sith Wars leading up to the Brotherhood of Darkness/Ruusan Reformation and rise of Bane, a sort of technological reset where a LOT of in-use tech and culture was lost and had to be regained?
    2: That the eccentricities of visual range space combat and space combat in general, such as the over manning of ships, being a galactic cultural prejudice against AI, droids, and automation? Given how many Droid Rebellions have happened in both canons and the recent Clone Wars souring everyone on the idea of AI controlled ship weaponry and function?
    Edit: the out of universe explanations of course being that the ToR developers wanted to draw in the casual SW movie audience and not the niche KotOR audience, and that Lucas wanted to evoke WWII dogfighting and the tech he was familiar with was very analog anyway. Funnily enough, we in real life have made great strides SW hasn't in terms of wireless networking and tech miniaturization.
    Also sorry again for the spam, I saw that you replied to this comment on your mouse droid video, but I can't access your reply to it for some reason.
