    Potentilla is actually very dry tolerant and pretty hardy, so don´t water to much. It´s a big misunderstanding that flowers take energy from the plant/plants/trees. They don´t. They just slow down the leaf growth. The plant produce a flower, instead of leafs, that´s all. The plant/tree has excatly the same amount of energy. Potentilla produce a lot of suckers, so remove them all time, so the energy go to where you want it to.

    Flowers take energry from the tree, after first flush of flower, remove it all summer...Potentilla is a *tough* material... we collected some in a rural and harsh island belonging to Sweden with almost no roots, bone dry... the are flowering right now and growing wild...cool vid.

      Thanks for the tip I will do that. They seem to go from almost no root to filling the pot in a single growing season!

      Do berrys also take energy from a tree? Should they be removed?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do, whether to remove fruits depends whether you want the tree to use energy for growth, or maybe you prefer to keep some fruits to enjoy the display 👍

    This was great. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I’m only about 6 months in on my bonsai journey. I needed an old man hobby. I call it my old man Miaggi hobby. LOL. Love the tree update commercials throughout this video. A fantastic idea. Thank you for you educational videos. You have a fan in Florida, USA!

    All the updates are looking good. I also love seeing garden shrubs as bonsai. I think they are under appreciated at times, which is a shame as they sometimes make the best bonsai

      B.G.Bonsai: just bought two Acer Desho-jo 60cm tall 4cm thick trunks for £55.00 from a local garden centre (Liverpool UK) with selective pruning throughout the summer and autumn I reckon I will have two nice trees 😀

      @grobonsai  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Kavanagh that sounds like a win, I’ve never seen deshojo at a non-bonsai place!

    Bro that Chojubai is a stunner!

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, about that, it was accidentally left in the greenhouse after some bad weather last summer, and it fried in hot weather. The trunk died back to the soil, but it has since thrown out some suckers. So it’s not dead, but it’s gonna be 10 years before it’s anywhere near as nice as it was 😥

      @@grobonsai the phoenix chojubai. Sad that it died. Lord knows I've killed my fair share.

    You will see that foil will heal those cuts faster than you think
    I have used foil on cuts over 5 inches wide and they almost closed at the end of the year growing in the ground and pots

      Veegee49, I too have started to use the silver foil after reading on the net that a Japanese Bonsai master uses it on his specimen Bonsai's. It was unusual to see silver on my trees (I say trees loosely😂) at first but you quickly don't notice it. It is good to know how long to keep it on for 👍

    Daren, can I ask how your Potentilla faired in those pond baskets please? I recently mentioned on a Facebook page that I had moved a number of Potentilla into pond baskets and was told it was 'inadvisable' mainly due to them being very thirsty. I'd really like to hear your thoughts please.

    • @grobonsai

      They do really well but yes they do need lots of watering in the summer

    I see your using a lot of air pots how is that working for you

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really well so far, the pad of roots that come out of the pond baskets is beautiful. I’ll have to wait until next year to see the result of the proper air pots, but so far growth has been good over the last 12months of using them.
