your video's improved, i like the switching between subjects and comeback with the pruning potentilla keeps it fresh. sometimes it's a pain to watch a pruning video. this balance was perfect! great idea.
At last some excellent info on potentilla bonsai. I bought my first potentilla a few months ago and have been struggling to find any decent info on them. Keep up the good work 👍

I have had 2 of these in the ground for a few years to thicken up, etc. Both suffered badly in the spring heatwave to the extent one has died. I lifted the other and the trunk literally separated into several trunks without any cutting, chopping etc.. I've potted these up and some are showing signs of new growth, as are some cuttings I took from the few long branches with any growth on them. I didn't realise they need so much water. I'll see whats left next spring to work on. Thanks for the videos.

Hi, I treat them the same as any other tree I have in training container, which in my climate means putting them onto the ground. If it is particularly dry and windy I will check to see if water is necessary, but that is rare due to lots of rain and a sheltered garden.
A good idea for a video would be just going through accent plants I've only got on succulent as an accent plant. I'm not really shore what to get and what pots to use.
It’s daunting isn’t it! I’m in the same boat as you my friend. Have a look at Crataegus.com or on Instagram Young Choe - both have lots of ideas. @@jameswalker3416 I recommend Flickr, while it's not a typical social media site like Instagram, flickr allows you to keep track of all your trees, like keep one album for each tree.

I got an Chinese elm about 20 years ago, one of the supermarket specials. Its actually grown quite well. But never back budded until a few weeks ago after I started to use an organic fertiliser (Green Dream Original) plus a seaweed and fish extract. Early days, but looking like a good switch from the chemical bonsai fertilisers.
@@almac2598 you didn't get back bidding on an elm for 20 years? They back bud like crazy for me. The reason I brought up scaring to promote back budding is when the tree doesn't produce buds where you want them to be.
@@jameswalker3416 My bad I think for not making myself clear. I'll describe the tree as trunk, main branches, first side branches, and so on. Pruning back has ramified the smaller branches just fine, with backbudding. However, this is the first time there has been backbudding on the trunk and main branches before the first side branches start. Useful because the top was damaged when a climbing rose was ripped of the wall during the bad winds in the winter and fell on it. I've turned up a branch to start growing a new apex, so all being well and a couple of years it should be ok. These videos all help tremendously.

Mini hostas are excellent for growing for kusamono, just in the way you grow the Iris cristata. And a full video of only kusamono would be nice.

How long do you leave nursery stock in it’s existing soil, before you change it over to bonsai soil and pot.
Great question! I will do a first prune and let it recover, then repot at the next suitable opportunity (eg Spring)

Sorry for double commenting but I've heard elms bud where theres damage so you should be able to scrape the bark and get it to bud where you want.
I tried that, sadly no luck for me this time. If no buds next Spring I’ll pop a couple thread grafts in 👍
