This album is not necessarily an autobiographical album. Taylor said this like a character album, either fictional or reality. Each song has different perspectives coming from different people.

FYI if you listen to 'Betty' then 'Cardigan' an then 'August' it tells a story of a teenage love triangle. Taylor has said theirs a teenage love triangle but wont confirm which songs they are but fans believe the above 3 are as they make sense lol x
It is theorized by some My Tears Ricochet is about Scott Borchetta and Big Machine. It fits if you read it. But it is all metaphors and can be anything. That's how I would describe this album, metaphorical and poetic.
And Mirrorball is thought to be metaphorical for her career and relationships.

Loved this, when I heard you say 5am at the start of the video I went this is going to end in tears. The great part about this is that Joe actually helped her write some of it! He helped write Exile but also I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it but Cardigan, August and Betty are considered the teenage love triangle in the album. August is from the other woman's perspective, Betty from the boy who cheats perspective and Cardigan from Betty's looking back at it

Epiphany is about Taylor's grandfather's experience of the war.
Mad woman is about this angry woman that everyone hated in the neighbourhood and she drove everyone to hate each other.
The last great American dynasty is about Taylor's mansion and the people that lived there before her.
Seven is about Taylor's childhood friend that was treated poorly at home.
Hoax is about Tay's toxic relationship in her past I think?
And peace and invincible string are about Joe, her current man!
Also there are theories that Joe is actually the songwriter in the album under the pseudonym William Bowery. (Joe's grandfather is a famous composer WILLIAM Alwyn + Bowery hotel where the lovers met once)

So basically "the last great American dynasty" tell the story of Rebekah Harkness who owned taylor Swift's rhode Island house in the past. Very interesting when you actually go through the lyrics (sis stole a neighbours doggo. Sksk)
Exile is about a dysfunctional relationship with communication issue. (Most like a woman who had abusive relationship and decided to walk away).
3 character whose story gets told.
Illicit Affair is about a cheating relationship. JAMES WAS HOEING OUT.
Cardigan - Betty's point of view. She get thrown (by james) but some one still finds her and accepts her. Thus she sing "when I feel like an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and say i was favourite)
August - point of view from the girl who Betty's man cheated on. How James calls her behind the wall or the mall to meet up. The song also say how James isn't her's to lose anyway.
Betty - point of view of James. He loses her but see her still thriving and moving on and has someone new and James suddenly "misses her" smh

Seven is the best.
If you listen REP or LOVER you will notice the differences from folklore. Except exile,cardigan,the 1 and last great American dynasty all songs are similar. Please don't judge me I am swiftie too. I know this album showed up with lyrics and some stories but like every songs are familiar with each other. Yeah I know taylor doesn't have to make hits songs in every album like love story, cruel summer, I did something bad. But when the rep and lover came up I loved every songs at first listening with no exceptions. Especially all of the rep album songs were really great. But folklore is kinda boring to me. I just liked 4/15 songs in it but like I said I have liked %100 percent of songs in REPUTATION and LOVER. This is not her best work but not a bad album too.
you a probably more a fan of her pop stuff, whereas the folklore album is in the “alternative” genre so that’s probably why. because alternative music is very different to typical pop music! no judgement here everyone can have their opinion!
well this is her best work yet along with evermore... even if you don't like majority of the songs if u compared this to other albums the artistry is really top tier
