This Retro Carbon Kestrel 200SC Road Bike Restoration is a project which was more of a deep clean and a service. Kestrel bicycles based in America introduced the worlds first all carbon Road bike frame. Kestrel Bikes are world famous for leading technology within the cycling world, racing in Triathlon's and also Road Bike races around the world. This Kestrel 200SC came into the workshop fitted with retro Profile Triathlon bars and Avocet Cycling Computer, very retro and cool at the time. Watch how this bike is transformed, being completely stripped down, cleaned then rebuilt before taken out on the open road for its test ride. The Kestrel 200SC Road Bike has been completely overhauled and restored to like new, and is shown in full detail in this one video.
The video also covers the Kestrel Bicycle Company's history and gives some hints and tips along the way.
I hope that this video gives you some ideas and inspiration for your own projects. If you are new to the channel please have a look around with plenty we have many more Vintage Road Bike restorations and also Bicycle Maintenance videos to help a long the way.

Remember when I first saw a Kestrel bike in the end of the '80s. Couldn' t figure how was possible to build a frame with such a strange material... Thinking of it now... It was an astonishing bike. Time trial model with disk wheel at the rear, 26" front wheel and aero bars on bull horn bar.... Speechless. Awesome.
Thanks for watching and sharing your memories. All the best Andy 👍
@@BikeItUK We share more than we could expect. Passion, memories and also our name. Top!!!
Thanks for this, I purchased one when I left the Marine Corps in 1989 and still have it. Want to bring it back into shape I even have those aero bars and computer.
The Kestral frame is stunning and very advanced for its time. It’s a great thing to do restoring your old ride, definitely brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for watching
Wow, carbon from 1986, undamaged, that's a beauty. Lovely. KB
Hi Ken, thanks again yes the Kestral really did turn out well. A bicycle that had not been ridden for years 👍🚲 all the best Andy
That frame would even look good with a modern shimano groupset. Timeless design.
yes I have to agree an absolute timeless frame, I couldn't believe how the bike felt. Thanks for tuning in all the best Andy
Just finished my ’81 pinarello treviso with some vintage handlebar tape, wrapped from top to bottom as in your guide. This is the best vintage bike channel.
Great news I am really happy that the videos are helping you out, which above all is my goal on TH-cam. The Pinarello sounds a nice ride and is one Bicycle on my hit list. Thanks again Andy
Welcome back,Andy! I missed your videos...
I am a very ancient cyclist, bred and raised on steel bikes. So a carbon frame is a total unknown to me. But you made a great job of the restoration: carbon or not, the bike became a beauty to behold. I really like your attention to fine details, like the colour matching of frame, water-bottle and handlebar tape. Well done!
Thanks Roy, it is nice to be back and to be answering all these great comments. Yes the Kestrel back in the day was one bike that was breaking all the rules. I remember it clearly thinking this is never going to catch on. I thought that about text messaging also, funny. It was such a good fins because it was so original, stuck in a time capsule. It made a great restoration, many thanks for the on going support , all the very best Andy
youre like bob ross of cycling . so relaxing
Good find . that era of 7 -8 speed Shimano is very hard wearing and withstands lots of abuse,, still using dura ace hubs same vintage to this day.. Always polishes up nice.. bike restored like new, a good purchase for someone.!
Yes, it is a shame to let these bikes go I wish I had the space and funds available to store them all. But I suppose that would be selfish it will make someone a great ride to enjoy. It really did ride so smooth, its unbelievable how these bikes are good for years to come and enjoy. Thanks for tuning in and the support all the very best Andy
I can’t express my appreciation for your energy and attitude. Watching these are like therapy for me. Crack On!
Crack On in deed and thanks for the supporting comment. I need ti Crack On a little more and get these videos out more. All the best and thanks again Andy
What a great looking bike for its age
Yes it was well ahead of its time 🚲👍 thanks for the comment all the best Andy
the color harmonies look very nice and charismatic, you did a very good job, it is very pleasant to watch you, congratulations.. 👍🏼
Thanks for your support means a lot 👍🚲
I love this video, especially because I own a 200SC in white.
Thanks for the comment the White model was probably the more iconic and recognised Kestral 😉very cool bike. All the best Andy
Great Video Andy. For what looked like a fairly simple strip, clean and rebuild, the bike came up great.
Nice to see you back and looking forward to the next video soon.
👍👍👍
Ha Ha Show less nice delivery! Thanks for the support Rob, yes it feels good to be back. hopefully see you back sooner than later. Andy
Stunning looking bike mate. I remember them new back in the day!!!!👍🏻🏴

Great to have you back Andy!!! I can now get my fix :-)
Ha Ha Arr Thanks for the support! All the best Andy
Great restoration.👍 My trainer used to ride one with mavic 3g and dura ace 7400 and later with mavic cosmic carbon wheels and dura ace 7700. It is the bike that influenced heavily the Trek OCLV design
Interesting thanks for your knowledge and support. Happy cycling my friend
Those Campag Strada Hardox rims were the best in their day! Nice to see you back!!
Great spot! I loved stripping this bike back, you realise you are on to a winner when the rims are also true and in such good condition. The bike rides so well and it really was a dream bike to me as a kid which was out of reach. Thanks for the on going support all the best Andy
Nice video, and welcomeback 😁👍
Thank you all the very best Andy
Beautiful rebuild Andy love how clean and new the frame and Shimano 600 groupset came out
Thanks for watching and the support. This retro Kestrel Road Bike really did turn out fantastic. Thanks again and all the best
Glad to see you back behind the work bench Andy 👍🏼 That Kestrel turned out mint, great job 👌🏼 Your channel got me totally hooked on classic steel bike rebuilds. I'm currently on my 5th bike (a Peugeot Mirage) after starting a few months ago 😜
Mate...this is music to my ears. Comments like this, make what I do all worth while. Really happy that I have inspired you and that you are hooked on restoring these bikes. Thank you for all the support and all the very best, keep up the good work saving these classic Road Bikes. Andy

Welcome back Andy!
Thanks Graham!
Good to see you back!
Thanks all the best Andy
I have the same bike, same groupset and it is my favorite bike to ride. It is comfortable, fast, super easy to pedal, super stable when riding with no hands - just amazing. I have a Merckx Corsa Extra which is awesome but this Kestrel feels even better. Thank you for the video and your enthusiasm!!!
Epic restoration. Really, really nice work.
Many thanks for the supporting comment all the best and happy peddling Andy 👍🚲
Looks boss, my sort of bike. Ive got a Giant OCR from 2004 still going strong.

This really is a dream build for me I used to have a Kestrel Road Bike back in the day. Thanks for this
Thanks for watching and the support yes Kestrel Bicycles were way ahead of the times. All the best Andy
I have the bike actually. It rides good. I dont put the power output I do on the cannondale CAAD10 I have. Don't need to, its carbon, it rides pretty smooth and I want the bike to last.
Wow nice to hear it’s still about and being looked after thanks for the update much appreciated
so glad to see you making some content again. Great rebuild as aways! Would love to see how you polish up the wheels so well in a future vid!

Your videos are motivating. Greetings from Poland
Thank you I am happy that they make you feel that way. Job done, all the best Andy
Great video, beautiful restoration job. I have this bike still with Dura-Ace 7400 Groupset and ride it to this day. It's pretty clean, but not as clean as yours, so you have inspired me to clean it up a bit. Cheers and thanks for the very entertaining and inspirational video.
Thanks for watching, great to hear you’ll be giving your Kestral the love it deserves after all these years of service to you. All the very best Andy
@@BikeItUK Thank you Andy, keep up the great video’s and have a great weekend. - Tom

Hi yes the renovation is in the final push stage. I just want it over now if Im honest with you. It looks amazing though and Im glad the better half has pushed me into doing it. Thanks for asking pal all the best Andy

Stunning. Great job Andy!
Thanks for watching and the support all the best 👍🚲
He's back!!
Cheers pal, all the best Andy
I enjoyed the video mate, nice one! What I don't understand is, although I follow all your advice, and use the products you use, I can never get the bike as shiny and new looking as you can!!
Hi Andrew, Im unsure how to reply to that. I do spend a lot more time on things than what is shown in the video. Polishing a frame and touching up can take a couple of hours sometimes more. The videos do make things look a lot easier than it is, especially the time lapse stuff. I have a folder full of out takes maybe I should create a video with them on. Thanks again Andy
Up
I acquired a used 2009 Kestrel Talon frameset. On my way to building my first bike. Very excited. Glad I found your video, helps alot and very informative.
Amazing frames well ahead of the times. I hope your making progress another bike saved. All the best and thanks for the support Andy
Beautiful! I just lucked into a 2008 (near as I can figure) Kestrel Talon SL TT bike, complete with Roval Fusee Star wheels and a mix of Ultegra 6601 and Dura-Ace 7800. My first ever carbon bike, a lovely and very fast piece in really good condition save a stuck seat post. I'm still puzzling out how to free it, but it's nigh spot on height anyway.
Very nice 👍 I have a similar problem with a seat post on a bike I use regular. That’s also stuck at the perfect height 🤔🚲
Finally a new video! :)
I know I know, Im on it just been so busy with home life. Nice to be wanted thanks for the support buddy all the best Andy
Yes Andy are you back for good mate? Love your videos
Mate, Im going no where.....I've jus been extremely busy with home life. I have loads more videos planned. thanks for the support all the best Andy

Like watching your vids gave me the inspiration to buy a vintage racer which was a giant team pro wow rode it to work nearly broke my neck the thing was that light sticking to my hybrid but great vids carry on👍
Thanks for comment glad you saved a bike and hope the videos have been helpful. Not good about your neck, different bikes for different occasions never have enough 😉👍 thanks again all the best Andy
I've been waiting so long for this video👌

Too long......been so busy with the house and family stuff Thanks for the support Andy
@@BikeItUK respect
Andy! where have you been! also- gonna be picking up some of those campy stickers from ya for my gunnar build
Hi, i have been bust with the Stickers and the site, plus give the family home the final push to get the house finished off so I can concentrate on providing more TH-cam content. Thanks for the support all the best Andy
Nice bike , isn't it advisable to clamp a carbon bike by the seat post, not the top tube? And use a torque wrench otherwise "crack on" might be literal 😁✌️
Very much so!
Yes cracking the frame would make a great bloomer wouldn't it. The clamps are spring loaded so yes clamping the frame into the stand does carry great risk of damaging a carbon frame. The frame is placed onto the stand and the clamp is screwed down loosely , never clamped. I personally know there isn't much pressure on the frame, however the viewer doesn't know this, so maybe not good practice to show it demonstrated in this manner. It maybe a better solution to keep the seat post located in the frame through out the duration of the video, demonstrating the correct practice. Thanks for the comment. Andy
looks a great bike . whats the favourite bike either to build or ride .
Thanks for the comment the Colnago Master was a great bike and an amazing ride. However I love the look of the Kirk Precision, just good to see a different style of thought 🚲 thanks again and all the best Andy
Thank you for the video! I have a Kestrel 200 EMS (newer than the SCi) frame which is broken where the front derailleur mounts. I m planning to repair it, the frame is too nice to throw it away. It came with full Dura Ace (7400 series), no wheels and with MTB handlebar and shifters. I m not sure how I should rebuild it. With a "modern" 10S best suited for my needs and ride it or keep it as original as possible and ride it less / sell it. I can t get my head around. What do you guys think?
Hi thanks for the comment, it’s always a nice thing to restore and preserve. But I have also fitted new groupsets to a retro frame and had the best of both worlds. What is for sure it’s worth saving the frame whichever way you go. Depends what parts are available to you. Good luck whichever way and enjoy 🚲😉 all the best Andy
You weigh this bike? Curious as this was early carbon. awesome vid too and happy to see you back!
Thanks buddy, no I didn't weigh the bike it was a lot lighter than its steel bike counter parts that is for sure. Thanks again Andy
Nice build. Lovely job. Are the chainrings Biopace ?
Hi thanks for watching and the comment, yes the chainrings are Biopace.
Andy: I like your channel and your restorations. I usually watch you via Amazon Firestick, so I had to come to my PC to comment. Ever heard of a Major Nicholls frame? From Smethwick in Staffs? (West Midlands now) I have one in my loft from 1965. I'll never ride it again, but it needs a facelift. (New tyres I guess and maybe replace the Huret gears. ) . Have a look on classic lightweights and see a few of Major's bikes. I don't want to throw the bike away; but rather give it to someone like you. Just let me know. JW West Mids.
So sorry for the late reply I get so many comments and I am just going threw them now. Loads of history with the bike, I would be honoured to restore it and pick it up if you still have it. Im only in Cheshire so not to far away. Thank you for your support and watching I am now hoping you receive my reply with watching threw Amazon. All the very best Andy
I just picked up the same exact frame for $50 USD in decent condition. Trying to figure out if i go the stock route or build it into a fixie.
Great price, decisions decisions 🤔depends what you have already and what you need or want the most. You can never have enough bikes though. Enjoy 👍
The seat stays are like the new bikes of today short and compact, and this bike was from the 1980s
Thanks for the comment, one bike ahead of its time 👍
Great resto. One question: are the forks bent? Cheers Andy
Hi on this Kestral Carbon Road Bike it was one of the earliest Carbon bikes available and the folks had still not become straight. Thanks for the comment and watching all the best Andy
Hello. Does anyone know the best way to identify groupset types on older bikes. I've been given a pretty worn Dolan TT bike. This was custom built originally. The groupset says shimano 105 on the rear derailleur. The front derailleur says shimano 600 with tri colour symbol. And the cables go up to 3T ahero tt bars with shifters on the bar ends. I have no wheels but pretty sure it's 8 speed by counting the clicks when shifting. The cable bolt on the front derailleur won't tight enough to hold the cable. And bolt isnt stripped. So maybe I need a new derailleur and don't know what I need. Is it ultegra? 600? 105? I need someone who knows what they are doing lol.
I bet this is a great riding bike. Nice find and great work Andy. I have an older Kestrel Talon frame hanging on my wall here so I know these are quality frames.
What did you end up doing with the Avocet bike computer? Since you raved about it at the beginning of the video I was sure you were going to reinstall it when the bike went back together.
Thanks for the comment and support, yes these Kestrel frames really are something else and way ahead of the time back then. I still have the Avocet head unit with a few other retro computers in a collection, the same with the old clipless pedals.
Thanks again stay safe
@@BikeItUK Why not do a short video on some of the classic cycle-comps in your collection?
Dear BikeIt UK, excuse me for my off topic question, but in your Colnago Master Piu video you beautifully engraved some of the bicycle parts. What machinery did you use for this and how did you do it exactly? Best regards, ArendM
Hi the equipment was machinery at a local engravers who normally does trophy engraving. i hope that this helps all the best and good luck Andy
¿No fue AEGIS Bikes los pioneros del carbon?, Yo tengo una AEGIS Svelte y una Kestrel SCI 200, aùn las uso y las admiro!!
Great video but from seen couple of your older restorations this bike looked not in to bad condition. But true cyclist look after there bikes. Nice job all same but👍🇮🇪☘
The more of these videos Im doing it is becoming harder to find new manufacturers Road Bikes that are in real need of restoration. I should maybe get a couple of real cheap wrecks and turn them around for some back to basics. Thanks for tuning in all the best Andy
@@BikeItUK wasn't critzing just love seeing bike heading for scrap pile especially vintage bikes getting new life. Even if it's old beat frame turned into fixie. Newer made bikes I believe are build to fail certain parts giants cranks always seem go first Specialized the aluminium piece that holds derailer etc. The older stuff was built to last not like alot of new stuff. 👍🇮🇪☘
@@pauloneill9965 Honestly Paul, I didn't take it that way, I wish I could sack the day job off and do more bikes. Completely agree with you regarding the older bikes and everything else for that matter. All the best
I am just about to finish restoring that same frame, I have had a couple of rides and it feels great, I need to get new tires, do you think 700x28 can fit on it? or is it too big for the clearance?
Hi thanks for watching. I personally would play it safe with 25mm it depends also on the callipers that you have used I say. Hope this helps all the best
@@BikeItUK Thnx, I'm getting the 25mm
Fausto Coppi... please !!!
It’s on the list of bikes to do 👍🚲🚲🚲😉
Any worries about old carbon frames, re: resin deterioration?
Definitely a consideration, the Kestral seemed absolutely fine though with no signs of cracking or anything
How did you get those shots up close on the bike?
The one on the ride was a action camera on a selfie stick, I hope this helps Andy
@@BikeItUK Thanks!
Beautiful bike. Jealous much.
Thanks for watching and the support
the fork is bent. the first part before the curve is not in the same line than the headtube. the offset looks off.
No these were Carbon forks so would bend. Thanks for the keen eye and watching
Surprised you didn't upgrade the seatpost to a cheap carbon for considerable budget weight savings.
Hi again thanks for the views, yes tempting I just wanted to try and keep it as close to original as possible. All the best Andy
Where is the saw? Man where is the saw? Crack on is no substitute.
Ha ha ha Love it!! Funny ....maybe I should put it on our website ForSale, along with the original Blue cap that I replaced with an identical one. You made me laugh, so big thank you for that and also the support. All the very best Andy
Have watched the rest of the video, hoping to see the saw appear. But what a bike, so far ahead of its time with the lowered seat stays. Genius.
