It’s interesting that the West has no analogue to this aircraft. It’s the only one I know of that makes such obvious use of the Coanda effect. Those blown flaps are incredibly powerful lift devices.
Boeing actually built a cargo plane prototype called the YC-14 that used the identical USB & engine placement configuration. Neither it nor the McDonnell-Douglas’ more conventional YC-15 were adopted, the USAF opting for the C-17 later. Solid flight performance from the Antonov.

Antonov seem to have a flair for aircraft design and they design and build some of the most interesting aircraft in the world today. There are some very clever design features on the An-74: The high mounted engines allow this aircraft to operate from rough and dusty airstrips out in the wilds, minimizing the ingestion of grit into the engine which can cause untold damage to the delicate engine components.
