What a lovely little City Cov was.I,m a born and bred Coventry kid,and the abomination that,s replaced it now, makes me weep.Council should be thorougly ashamed. It,s an eyesore.

It’s less of a concrete jungle now. This post war build didn’t age well at all

In 1965 I was 16 and living in Coventry. It was a great place to live from around 1960 to 1970. In 1979 I emigrated to the USA, where I've been ever since. This video only scratches the surface of what Coventry had to offer. And it was only a 30-minute train ride from England's second city, Birmingham, which was also a wonderful place.

the post-war rebuild was really nice. i grew up in Coventry in the 70s, and remember it well from this footage. i left in 1984, never to return, and eventually moved to London, where i still live.
it’s vandalism what they did to that precinct, it’s an absolute mess now.

thankyou for posting this , it captures Coventry as I remember it as a child . I was born and semi raised in Coventry , my late Father got promoted with his job in 1967 , and we moved up the road to Leicester in the Autumn of the following year , as it would have meant my Father travelling between the 2 Cities daily if we had not moved . I still go back as I have close friends there . I loved the beautiful shots of Broadgate with Lady Godiva's famous statue , and peeping Tom poking his head out of the clock to peep at Lady G on her horse , fantastic , and the City Arcade with it's birdcage . stuff like this I will carry in my memory until the day I die . thankyou

It did look nice now that I see on the video. I never did like Coventry, it was too modern for me and preferred old Cities then and still do. Coventry Precinct had nothing to do with so-called "brutalism." Many aspects of modernism, and modern building techniques, yes.
The Precinct was filled with artwork, colourful mosaics, neon artwork on the buildings, fountains etc. Donald Gibson's plan was forward thinking, incorporated designs for modern life and was a boon to the people of Coventry.

Todays generation isnt actually from Coventry, its "cosmopolitan". Strangely, all the new inhabitants are from the same places - the indian subcontinent and eastern europe. Immigration should be balanced - lets swap half a million asians for some canadians, australians, new zealanders, french, germans, italians, scandinavians etc etc. Of course they wouldnt want to come to the new coventry. Nope, its just pakistan, india, poland and romania - garnished by the overseas student population. I remember sixties coventry, and the coventrian people. All these years of labour council policies have destroyed the place more completely than the luftwaffe ever did.
