I have one of these and bought it because of that price and mine is extremely free rolling, I've never had a model move like it with just a slight tap. so I imagine there must be a quality control issue or you were very unlucky.
These look similar to a transfer caboose here in the States, though ours have more railings so the crew don’t fall off the side when they’re standing on the porches at either end.
Wow this brakevan is perfect for modellers wanting to recreate the troublesome trucks scenes from Thomas, that springing it's causing is so true to the show.
I bought one of these from Rails as well a few weeks ago in the BR livery. Mine is perfectly free-rolling, only issue I had was one of the lamp brackets fell off presumably in shipping. Unfortunate that yours had issues. Cheers.
Hi Sam, yes I have ordered one today from Rails, I have nine others in various liveries but none in SR. I kinda like the Red ends and I feel sure that I can rectify any problems that might come with it. So thanks again for your input on this product. Regards from Ron 🚂👍😃🚂
Just bought some n-gauge stuff from Kato. Gotta say, it's remarkable quality for the price. Got a BNSF dash-9 and you may imagine my surprise to learn it has working, directional lights, runs very smoothly and quietly, and only cost me $100. Definitely going to look for more Kato stuff in the future.
Legitimately, I reckon this is a great brakevan to weather and park on a siding. It's (relatively) inexpensive and detailed enough for that purpose. And you don't have to worry about the guilt of parking a *good* brakevan.
Decent review here Sam, you have certainly done a fair few brake vans now, if I’m right I think your last O gauge video was a brakevan, hope we can see some different rolling stock at some point, would be nice to se some more bogie coaches as the only one I can recall, you doing is the dapol AutoTrailer for O gauge.
I too found it looked okay, and not lying under the stock and looking up at it the underframe detail, or lack of, caused me no issues. However. This was the first item from Dapol with no beam compensation. This meant , along with the long wheelbase, it was to put it politely, "tender" regarding track holding. In the end, the lack of underframe detail came in handy. I cut away the frame at one axle. Mounted that axle in a rocking shaft to allow it to twist ( three point suspension as is standard in finer 4mm modelling) Not a great solution in O scale, but at least the thing now stays on the track much of the time. This is the only Dapol item I have had to do anything to just make it work. Mine was more than your price but was still discounted. However following your example, my other brake van was 3d printed AND beam compensated. Thanks for the review, nice to know it's not just myself that was a tad disappointed with this vehicle:-)
I know well the issue with long-wheelbase 2-axle cars :D Started a small sub-collection of Lima 'O' scale UK/EU rolling stock from the '70s. Among them are several 2-axle UIC gondolas and refrigerator vans. While their wheel flanges are not in any way finescale (they look to be double the depth of the ones on the reviewed brake van), I have the additional 'handicap' of being in 3-rail O-gauge in the 'States running Lionel tubular sheet-metal rails. While the MK1 and UIC coaches behave themselves if operated carefully (I have 36" radius curves), the 2-axle vans/gondolas absolutely _hated_ one particular straight section and would derail violently every time they crossed it. I found it was the combination of a slight dip and over-gauge condition on that one section (probably got stepped on during it's life on a floor layout) and I never noticed it due to the wider wheel treads and "pizza cutter" flanges endemic to US 3-rail "O". So it's slated for replacement, and the rest of my loop will probably be in for a round of track-geometry work, just so I can occasionally hitch one or more of these oddballs to the rear of a regular US train consist, just for giggles :D .
Hi Sam, A great review from you and I might just be tempted to get one of these BVs at that price as I do have a few O gauge southern locomotives. Thanks for the information about this model. Regards from Ron 🚂👍😃🚂
What I did notice is that the brake rigging seems to be working/adjustable, maybe that’s what is catching. because it is so cheap, maybe you could try to hook a motor up to the brake rigging?
Unfortunately there is little choice for O Gauge brake vans. Tried the Dapol 20t & returned it as not up to there usual standard. Put my name down for the Ellis Clark “Shark” brake but the project was shelved 😢,shame as the Presflow is amazing.May look into the new Dapol Toad. Thanks for review Sam & highlighting this offer!
I bought one in BR grey with uneven planks (SR used planks in pairs of one thinner and one thicker for several van designs, but also used even planks for the same types too), 2nd hand back in 2017 or 2018 when I was starting out in 0 gauge, as my first brake van and probably my 3rd or 4th wagon. When I used to go to the Egham club, they have an 0 gauge layout outside, which wasn't terribly well laid and had issues of the roofing felt underlay (used to protect the wood from the weather) causing humps. And my SR pill box was never reliable at staying on when there, for some reason. Also, I had the buffers fall off the headstocks several times... I'm considering getting a 2nd at this lower price. But, I would prefer one with even planks and as suitable for BR, so I may need to get this one to then remove the SR and add a S prefix to the number as per 7F-100-101 (which has uneven planks). But, I'm also not sure I even have enough S prefixes, because I've only built 2 Parkside SR-design wagons which came with a limited selection of wagon numbers, and 3 other SR (well, pre-grouping southern region) wagons which didn't have transfers with them. But, I spent way too much at GETS, so I won't be able to afford any more train stuff for a good 2 months... One thing I hate about RTR 0 gauge stuff, the fact the tyres on the wheels are bright metal. I can accept it with wheels in a kit, which I always paint. But whether you get a Dapol brake van for £35 in a sale, an Ellis Clark Presflo for £70, or even a Lionheart 4500 small prairie for £450, they never have black tyres or axles. I'd love to see a review of the new Dapol GWR Toads; diagrams AA15, AA19, AA20, and AA21. I've built a Parkside AA19 kit, but I'd love to get an AA20 (which is only slightly different from the AA19) and the AA21 (the vacuum fitted version); not sure if I want an AA15 but I don't need to rush to buy them at all. I'd also love to see your thoughts on the Dapol ex-Lionheart 14T Class A and Class B tank wagons, as I have 3 Class B and 2 Class A in Berry Wiggins livery. And the anchor mounted 14T tank wagon is a newer tooling too, which I wish Dapol would do in Berry Wiggins so I can extend my rake.
Nice Guard's Van, pity it doesn't move as well as it should. I've an idea. It can be an O Gauge version of the Spiteful Brake Van from Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends with a slight difference. Every time a tank engine couples up to your Spiteful Brake Van, the van can be stubborn. "I'm not moving!" OLIVER THE AUTO TANK ENGINE: You'll move if I have to drag you all the way!" (Sam causes a derailment and puts it right, and then....) SAM (falling backwards down the ladder): AAAAAAAH! Help! (His sister catches him and collapses under the weight. Peace is restored.) What do you think?
It’d be nice if the brake vans in rtr actually did their job and kept the couplings taut, the only ones I have that manage this are the newest Hornby toad and some kits
Hurrah on seeing my favorite brake van again, this time in o gauge! Though such shame indeed for the performance. 😀😕 1) If the duckets were mirrored, one pill box only and the lower footplates when climbing aboard are not there, then we got ourselves a Thomas And Friends version of that brake van. 2) Interior design-wise, I've seen a photo of that model with the main body off and there was a brake handle inside (shaped like an air pump for when filling up a tire or a ball). Perhaps must've been from a kit.
Have you ever considered doing a "run in" period for rolling stock.? I'd love to see a before run in and after run in video to see if it makes a difference. Much like your video on whether bearings make a difference.
Did you even check that both axles are sitting in their axle boxes correctly. Bet you didn't. Very common with Dapol O gauge models that they aren't sitting correctly when unpacked after being knocked around while being shipped. A simple fix.
If I did O and had one, I might be tempted to superglue some extra weight to it. Some of our O gauge brethren like to add details, so for the bargain price, it could be a project for somebody. Pity you can't get inside easily, though.
It's weird. I'm a firm believer in model whichever scale suits you. When I came back to the hobby I decided to go with N for space reasons. When I first made that decision I was worried, but I have come to love it. I can still understand HO/OO, but I don't want to go back to it. It's probably unfair, but when I see O these days, I just think "Tonka toy." I guess I found my home, and it's N.
Dapol should do the same with their toad brake van, as the handrails are tacky and plastic that break easy, yet on other models they have done are metal,😊,
Good review! Too bad it’s such a bad model, I saw the sales on Rails and am now thinking about trying O gauge as they have some really good discounts right now! You should review some Dapol O Gauge Vans of some kind, I don’t think you have any O Gauge Vans!!
@@modelrailfan37 It’s not a bad model. He’s trying to run it in idiotic conditions. It’s like buying a BMW and saying it’s crap because the ride quality is bad on a ploughed field or the surface of the moon.
Don't blame the conditions - it was the brake van to blame. No other O gauge rolling stock has ever had trouble on my "moon surface". Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh well, rather ok-ish for the price you paid had it run well, but otherwise a toy-ish looking thing tbh. The gaps under the boxes at both ends do look quite disconcerting really, and what is supposed to be eye as wood doesn't look it actually, and the roof just looks cheap. Flat plastic fantastic whilst wood can be perfectly simulated these days. At least the full price then would have been justified providing no gaps and smooth moving. This one just doesn't look the part and runs badly. Perhaps not too much to complain about for the price you paid had it been a good runner. But yeah, Dapol could have done much better we thought. Cheerio.
Wow that derailment frightened me as hell. Ever since you've set up that layout on shelves, I've always had been anxious about beautiful and expensive locos falling to the ground ^^' But I think no one would have regrets if this underwhelming plastic model crashed. It's not even a good product for serious modelers to customize and enhance it, with this roof that can't be opened...
To be honest, the high price of O gauge is really the only thing putting me off the scale and as a hobbyist like many with a low budget, O is out of reach. If this was a £40 brake van and it worked and there was a similar budget lower quality range, I'd wager there'd be a lot of demand for it.
How many O Gauge modellers are interested in the Southern Railway? Dapol do almost nothing for the LMS and nowt at all (I believe) for the LNER, both regions likely to enjoy more support than the SR. Got to make models people want.
