Hi Julie - thanks for posting this. You put a lot of time and effort into presenting the problem. I had heard a little bit about the drinking and once worked with a friend from Russia who talked about all the business being taken care of (goods and services) via black market (stuff exchanged over the fence). I am so sorry to hear about your friends and their families, especially their children. I'm hoping that people are able to get on top of their drinking problems and that the next generations make different choices.
This is the part we didn’t hear because there were always these really nasty stereotypes around Russians and alcohol. But it never explained the impact of alcohol and alcoholism in this context. I’m so sorry for the loss of your classmates through the most tragic circumstances. I will honor them in my heart because they were important and significant human beings. Thank you so much for sharing.😢❤
You are right, there is an unpleasant stereotype about alcohol and the Soviet person. Of course, this problem exists, but it also exists in many other countries. It was just more visible in the USSR. Efforts were made to combat alcoholism, but the natural conditions, the low cost of alcohol, and the lack of interesting leisure activities led to the widespread nature of this problem. Thank you very much for your kind words about my classmates. These girls deserved better. I remember with great regret those who couldn’t overcome alcohol.
Very interesting. Sorry to hear about your classmates. Alcohol can be a big problem, especially for girls, it takes a lot less for them to become affected. We have the opposite problem here in the US, alcohol consumption is way down. I sell spirits, and business is not good.
Thank you for your perspective. It's interesting to hear how trends differ between countries. In our time, up until the 2000s, alcoholism seemed like an epidemic, but now it doesn’t seem as widespread. However, drugs have become a different kind of problem

The stories of your two classmates is heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing.

Great video! Thanks for the truly honest assessment of what it was really like.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video.
As I mentioned, this is just a small part of what we can share. So stay tuned!
Rural America is still like this. Unfortunately. It's very hard to farm and survive with limited recourse.

@@Soviet-Born Same here, the young people prefer the drugs
I wonder how many people died from withdrawal when the government cracked down on selling vodka, or did most people manage to still get it illegally.
Some people managed, but again, many were often poisoned, especially due to the substitution of ethanol with methanol
would you please mention which city of Russia are you living? This is general question not related to Alcoholism section.
