    I grew up in Sidcup and rode the train to Charing Cross more times than I can remember. The sound of the wheelsets screaming in protest on the way out of Charing Cross really brought back memories...

    if i had a quid invested (back then) for every time I crossed that bridge ( at 29:55) on my way to and from school, or watching the 413s and even the double decker 4DD pass by the back of my house.... I would be rich old man. amazing how some is very different and some identical to how i remember it. I remember them adding the reversing siding just before I moved away from Sidcup in 1968.

    A bit late but some may find it useful.
    From Charing x stops are as follows-
    Waterloo East
    London Bridge (Under construction at time of filming so no stop)
    (9'20 line diverges -L is the line to Greenwich-Dartford.)
    New Cross (No Stop)
    Bypass St Johns Climbing up the Lewisham Vale/ Tanners Hill Line crossing over the SE Main Line.
    12'.30 Lewisham (A serious amount of crossovers. The line to the L is the Bexleyheath Line, Again ending up at Dartford.)
    After Lewisham the line diverges to the L which is the Courthill Loop leading to The SE Mainline. (The line straight on is the Mid Kent line leading all the way to Brighton in the South and Ashford/Folkestone in the SE.)
    16'20 Hither green (The line diverging to the R is the SE Mainline leading to Orpington/Swanley.)
    18'35 Lee
    21'35 Mottingham
    24'01 New Eltham
    28'55 Sidcup Then into sidings at Sidcup for return to Charing X.

      @@emmo999 THANKS FOR PUTTING UP WITH MY QUESTIONS
      End of Platform INDICATOR BOARDS ????
      THEATRE BOXES ????
      41.26
      Nearing the end of the LEFT Platform, I see a white 2 story building, on the right I see something similar. What is after the Platforms is Overhead Bridge, at the end of the left platform is a POLE with 2 white boxes that have black fronts, there is a SIGNAL with 1 Yellow, after the Train has stopped this turn 2 double yellow. THE POLE with the BOXES look similar to what I have seen in other Videos, but not point to the TRACK( I am thinking these are pointing to the Driver with timetable, perhaps)
      MY other viewings are mainly on a GANTRY, over the RAILS, viewed from the front of the Train, these mainly have a Letter or a Number showing.
      My Plan has 1 RH points in Reverse along with 9 Doubleslip Points a row, 1-0 indicating one of these tracks that go off to the right, (1,2,3,4,)5,6,(7,8,9,0,) if ONE of these are on then that point will be open to use. from these Doubleslip to the right will be the MAIN YARD, to the left will have other RH points to go to the DOUBLE LOCO SHED. I am thinking YELLOW NUMBER ON = SHUNTER coming from the left, if GREEN ON = YARD TRACK READY, LIGHTS OUT, :) no one home, FULL or empty.
      1-4 will be Stone Wagons, empty to get loaded
      5-6 should be Free
      8-9 Passenger Main
      7-0 Passenger Siding

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  ปีที่แล้ว

      The boxes on the left contain 6 monitors, so the driver can see all along the platform to know when it is safe to close the doors and then pull away. But these are not fitted at Cannon Street that you commented on before. So you’re asking about all different things. The monitor boxes are at virtually every Southeastern metro station away from the centre of London. So pop down your local station and you’ll find them
      (A theatre box is the LED matrix sign you asked about before that shows a letter, or number, to indicate the route set by the signaller)

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  ปีที่แล้ว

      Right well that’s a theatre box, which is not what you’re talking about at 38 minutes or 41 minutes. So you’re asking about two completely different things

    There seems to be an awful lot of control settings on this train?
    In most of the train videos I've watched, all we hear is a notch being selected and the brake being released. What exactly is going on?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So on these trains there is only one controller for the power and the brake. And just like every vehicle coming to a halt, sometimes you need to release the brake to get it to stop exactly where you want. The noise is exacerbated by the fact it activates a lot of relays in the cab

    Hey! thank you for answering me on your other cab ride video. Now having since keenly discovered a whole slew of other types of tracking from the train-starved Americas over here, does our train ply a swingnose crossing at 9:52? I'm also curious about what type of crossing adjacent at left immediately follows it practically at the same moment, but the whitish dusting all over its rails while being speedily passed make it hard to tell, do you know its type too please?

    • @emmo999
      @emmo999  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      trainrover the white paint is to keep the track cooler in hot sun (reduces heat expansion). Looks like another switched diamond, if we're looking at the same one

    • @trainrover
      @trainrover 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      emmo999 emmo999 Sun? What sun?! Less than ⅒ of cab videos over there reveal any sunshine happening (I'm just teasing). Anyhow, that paint must be solid enamel considering the trip occured wintertime..if only the same could be said about our roadway paint here. Thanks again: I now see both crossings being switch diamonds because their noses(?) bear no moving part; only their broad-angled joints(?) do.

    • @malcolmelliott1876
      @malcolmelliott1876 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emmo999 I am wondering the point of having switched diamonds seeing as the only 2 viable routes are the one you are on and the crossover, in which case surely an open diamond crossing with not moving parts would serve the same purpose. Either turnout is far to abrupt to be workable.

    Not naming the Stations has spoilt what should be a good vid'. Not all of us are conversant with the route , vid's like this are generally watched by enthusiasts , so what is happening along the way is important to us . That goes for all cab rides , otherwise interest in the ride tends to taper off . Take a leaf out of Don Coffey's book , he is a real dab hand at keeping us involved right to the end of the ride .
