Quite ambitious to complete a triathlon in less than 5 min! I expected a boat and a car in the kit 😂

I know many go without, but socks are a must for me. Worth the added time in T1 for the comfort.

I wear them to, but with shorter races, tri specific shoes for the bike and run negates them really. Running socks can be a blessing though 🙏

I thought that the divide was clear: socks = GCN. No sock = GTN.

A good high impact sports bra that’s also quick-drying and won’t chafe is an essential piece of kit for 50% of triathletes!

Watching Mark snap his fingers and a sports bra appear on would have been hilarious! Definitely missed opportunity there Mark! 😂

I did my first Triathlon in 2019, for me it was a chance to combine 3 events in one. I had done each element separately but combining them is not always easy. I would advise anyone to try and wear the same stuff for practice as on race day, that way you feel more comfortable with what you are wearing. I only made one mistake which was I forgot to have a vest to put on before I stuck my top on,it delayed me a bit but I sorted it out. Practice is not always something we like but if you can try and visualise yourself on the course and maybe learn the type of terrain for cycling or if it’s flat or not for the running. Transition is a bit of a challenge but you can make it a bit easier by only taking what you need. I would suggest doing each element and see what that requires, from that you might find you can use stuff for another element. I swam in 3/4 length leggings and then did my bike ride without changing, as I knew it was the run at the end I made a point of making sure my socks fitted properly so I had no risk of blisters or discomfort. I think if you lay your kit on a newspaper and make that your area you can then see what will or won’t fit in. As a thought if you have a bike you may be able to fit a water holder that will take 2 bottles, it will give you extra hydration while on the go. I found using the swim as a warm up exercise helped to loosen the muscles a bit for the cycle element, the transition to running from a bike is worth practicing as you can get jelly legs and for some it’s not pleasant. Set yourself a realistic time for each element and see how you manage, the day itself is fun and like many you will have your own reason for completing it. You will make a few mistakes but that’s part of the experience and hopefully you can use the knowledge gained for next time. Allow plenty of time for training and it will make sense, I would suggest you look at all the different types of triathlon and decide the distances you feel comfortable with and progress from there.I did my triathlon on a mountain bike with road tyres and found it to be achievable.

Spare tubes, mini pump or CO2 cartridges, tire levers, antichafing cream and nipple stickers are all absolutely essential for me as well. Comfy running socks too. If you are not aiming for podium, take an extra 20 seconds and make the rest of or tri more comfortable!

Beginner here - so naïve question. But those "essentials" seem geared towards shorter distance, no? Quick transition is certainly a big focus on short distances. But other than pros, at distance like ironman, I feel I'd rather take 30sec to put socks...

for the equipment or the race?
you can get the equipment quite easily. Road bike would be your biggest spend but there's affordable ones online for a few hundred bucks (sub $300 iirc).
Id be willing to wager you could get a full budget setup for under $600 that would suffice for olympic and under.
road bike $300, running shoes $60, helmet $40, wetstuit and tri suit $100 each.
      Give or take

    • @PaulioNZ

You could but you would risk damaging it when removing the wetsuit. A belt is highly advised as it takes less than 5 seconds to clip on. Just leave it draped over your seat or helmet so it's highly visible before getting on the bike!
