I agree that they’ve kept a “blue collar” feel, for the most part. Recently I’ve noticed that they’ve begun to update their look, but I think they’ve done a good job of maintaining that original aesthetic, while modernizing.
Especially with the coffee emphasis, they're definitely trying to paint themselves as the "anti-Starbucks". Company Man doesn't mention it, but Dunkin' currently is/has probably capturing customers that are disillusioned with Starbucks, either because of their prices or their very liberal political tendencies.
To me, Dunkin is trying to match up to Starbucks. The most recent updated stores have coffee taps and they pushing away from the “donut” part of their name and going by just “Dunkin”
@@gordontaylor2815 I personally don't think it has to with politics as Dunkin isn't exactly conservative imho. I do agree with you about the pricing as Starbucks is way too expensive compared to Dunkin.
I once won a Dunkin giveaway and got free coffee for a year. They sent me a congratulatory handwritten note and everything. They forever have my heart 💕
Could be just me but Dunkin Donuts has always been that one shop where its always reliable and consistent and they're just minding their own business lol
And the name was an action: you're taking your donut and dunking it. Calling it just "Dunkin'" is like your saying the name "Duncan"; just doesn't work to me.
It's to avoid ambiguity for people that are not familiar with the brand and send a message that the company is more than donuts. I don't personally like it but I see why they did it.
Used to be a Dunks employee myself. Here in my home town we have at least 6 (guess where I live lmao) and I worked at one where they actually still baked the donuts and everything else nightly. Not many stores do the baking anymore considering its very expensive to get the equipment, bakers, and the raw materials every week. I believe only 25 stores are left that still do it in the U.S. but I could be wrong. The espresso thing is spot on, they installed a brand new espresso machine and immediately focused on pushing espresso drinks (mostly lattes) over donuts. Also if you ever want some free donuts go to a Dunkin's about 30 minutes before they close. They usually toss the donuts (sad I know) and they have no issue giving away some. Varies by location but most I've been to around here don't want to toss them so they give them out. Excellent video my friend!
It's ironic that they dropped the "donuts" part because they are most likely the reason that American spell the breakfast pastry as "donuts" instead of "doughnuts"
FUN FACT: In Japan they're all Mister Donut, not Dunkin'. I guess that one was already popular and established so after the acquisition they chose not to change the name into Dunkin' there. I'm glad, because their brand image is so much cuter and more wholesome with that friendly logo! They also have cute lil mascots and do all sorts of collaboration promotions, I love it.
Mister Donut in Japan and Taiwan focus more on Pon de Ring styled donuts, which are 8 balls of dough shaped into a ring. The texture and flavor are different while also offering a wide variety of flavors.
In Taiwan, there was a donut war between Mister Donut and Dunkin', franchised by two competing local food/retail giants. Mister Donut and Dunkin' often opened next to each other. Dunkin' eventually left the market after losing sales to Mister Donut, which was praised for adapting to the local tastes and created recipes for doughnuts that are less sweet. I wonder why these two brands seemingly aren't owned by the same company in certain markets. Any tips, Company Man?
Not a fan of Mister Donut however, I did see an actual Dunkin Donut shop at two different locations in Japan. Guess those owners decided to keep the name?
Only Americans eat donut for breakfast, lunch, and late night snack. Those in Europe usually don't eat as much sugar, and in Asia they'll just eat rice. Aussies are also eat less sugars than Americans
Blood Bath and Beyond - Pop Goes Metal Covers I actually started working there and the past two days during both rushes I’ve seen 1 black person, I’m black myself but I just realized come to think of it
Charles Ligons bruh how lmao. There’s 2 right by my house and there’s NOOO actual white people by us lol. It’s not a poor neighborhood but so many coloured people live here. Idk it’s just crazy that some stores see mostly white people
@@halfwayliving thats really odd tbh. I live in a predominantly white neighborhood. I work at dunkin' and we get black people and all races all the time. To be fair, most of them are everyday regulars, so it might just be a matter of chance.
I have been on many comment sections and yours are by far the nicest. Every here adds to the video and has fairly interesting comments unlike the majority of TH-cam Comments sections.
Content definitely plays a roll! Not only is Company Man non-confrontational, the content is considerably more mature. Most argumentative people simply aren’t into this type of content, it doesn’t match their personality.
I'm old enough to remember when DD was a small regional chain. They made the donuts right in the store and boy were they delicious! Ever since they went corporate, their donuts have progressively declined to the point that they taste like factory injection moulded plastic.
Dunkin' Donuts is always smart in where they locate their stores. Almost every city has busy Dunkin' stores in transit stations or near the busiest bus stops, and they are also on all the major arteries that commuters drive on. They make it easy to enjoy a good, cheap treat.
I live in Massachusetts and you can pretty much navigate around the state by giving directions based on DD (Go up this street until you see the second Dunkin Doughnuts, take a left and after the third Dunkin take a right and you'll be there). My town alone of about 15,000 people has 4.
Boston resident here! A lot of us in the area have called it just "Dunkin'" colloquially even before the name change. I have a lot of fond memories of Dunkin'. My family would always go after church on Sundays.
Dunkin’ Donuts has helped revitalize our strip mall, after a lot of store closures since Radio Shack and Rite Aid closed down, and even Chick Fil-A has opened in our strip mall!
I honestly can't fathom why he hasn't made a video on Chick-fil-A yet. Now the 3rd biggest fast food chain in America (by revenue) and continuing to be the fastest growing, all while closed 54 days of the year and being completely family owned its entire existence. It's a heck of a story and its founder was a very impressive man. I don't know why he's ignoring them.
My dad works for their main warehouse. All i can say is thank you for all the support the employees have put towards my dads recovery. I am greatful to DD peeps because of how nice they have been. :) Oh and Dunkin coffee is way better than Starbucks! 😝😝 BITE ME I AM A BOSTONIAN!!
used to be better but since i bought some ground regular blend in dec of 2021, the flavor is weak and it requires 2X to the grounds to make the same strength as what i used to use. alas, no more buying DD coffee for me. the same applies to the one and only time I bought an iced in 2022, it's weak and watery and they've lost me as a customer.
Dunkin’ Donuts is a random coffee/fast food type place everywhere except New England, where its market saturation is so extreme that it’s much more dense than even Subway, I come from a backwater exurb an hour from Boston and half an hour from Providence. There were no less than 5 Dunkins in town the last time I was there, in a town of 10-15000 people that all work somewhere else. Dunkins exist randomly in the middle of neighborhoods, in gas stations (which are also oftentimes in neighborhoods), along with the usual places along high traffic areas, where their concentration is still extremely high compared to any other businesses. In eastern Massachusetts I would bet there isn’t one spot more than a 15 minute drive from a Dunkin.
I remember driving through Nashua, NH and counting approximately 13 Dunkin Donuts stores. It was alarming. In my hometown in Northeast, Ohio we had two spring up in the past year. It's unpleasant to watch, sort of like seeing yet another Verizon store show up in a newly built strip mall.
I don’t want to have to make a trip to dunkin, it practically needs to be at the end of my neighborhood on my way to get my commute and day starter. A grinders icon. Their familiar like family and you want no lines and exactly what you’re going to get everytime you driveaway.
I live in central New York and one my 15 minute drive to work I pass 3 Dunkin’s. (And I know of at least 2 others that are about a 2-mile detour from my regular route)
BTW, I like the addition of "Why They're Successful" videos. It's one thing to talk about why some companies fail, but it's also important to look at why some companies work.
I'm drinking a Dunkin Iced Coffee while watching this right now. I'm not sure if promotions are regional, but where I'm from it's 1.50 any sized coffee and tea from 2pm-6pm. Any given day I go, the drive thru line is long. That's a hard deal to pass up if you enjoy their coffee, which many people do. Given that, it's no surprise how they've been successful and their same stores sales growth has been positive for 10 years running.
Jake Brownsworth possibly a regional thing, or maybe its corporate vs franchise. My store was doing a happy hour (2-6, not technically an hour but whatevs) for medium lattes and cappuccinos but they stopped a couple months after we switched to a DDPerks $1.50 medium iced coffee promotion
freenquencie hmm that’s an interesting one as Square Enix isn’t the Goliath that Activision-Blizzard or EA is, and he normally covers Goliath companies or companies that were once Goliath , all Square Enix has going for it is like 3 or 4 brands of games. So while the games are popular and sell well the company itself hasn’t expanded much
@@MrLogan2600 it is, but it isn't. By that I mean that the two where the big RPG movers and shakers of Japan when the merger happened. EA is a case of them gobbling up a promising company just to acquire their properties then sell off every thing else. As for Activision-Blizzard, I wont touch that topic with a ten foot pole.
Amazing video as always. I reckon this “working class image” of Dunkin will make them in a better position in this recession than Starbucks and other premium food services.
Im almost there with you its pretty close for a lot less...I dont feel guilty buying it there like I do Starbucks. Where I live it seems average 6 pack guy def. prefers DD from what I hear from people.
I live in northeastern USA, so I can’t drive anywhere without being about 2 miles from dunks at any point. strawberry frosted with sprinkles are wicked good, 2nd choice is Boston creme🍩
I saw a poll that said Dunkin Donuts was the most-liked brand in new england. Out of anything, not just donut shops or restaurants. It's liked more than Ford, LL Bean, Walmart, 7-11, you name it.
CreeDo Lala duh people from New England absolutely hate all those things but love dunkin. They are not from New England. That answers the poll. Also Cumbies (Cumberland Farms) would destroy 7-11 in New England in a brand popularity contest
*It’s failing miserably in India because* 1. Majority of us don’t eat breakfast on the go. 2. Majority of us don’t eat donuts for breakfast, it’s more of a treat/dessert. 3. Every region has its own way of brewing coffee (for example, filter coffee in South India) and Dunkin’s coffee is struggling to compete with the local coffee. 4. Local coffee is 100 times cheaper (and better as per my taste buds) than Dunkin coffee. 5. Everything on Dunkin’s menu is expensive given the fact that it’s a fast food joint (McDonald’s & Domino’s are cheaper compared to Dunkin’s)
It is pretty sad though, you mention Donald's... Their food costs more than any pizza place around here now. I purchased 2 value meals for lunch for the family the other day and it was exactly 18.00. LOL I can get 2 large pizzas at Domino's at that price! 🤣 It is a good deterrant though, as we only go to McD only if no other option now...which is about once every couple months.
It's kind of ironic you say that because here in America a lot of the shop staff are of Indian descent. I've joked that Dunkin Donuts never had a race controversy because its shop staff are largely non-white.
If Timmie's stopped expanding their menu so much, I think they would do better and maybe be able to expand again. Their employees can't keep consistency up when they have to make like twenty different sandwiches and I dunno how many different drinks outside of coffee and simple tea. I haven't been to a Timmie's in quite a while since, every time I go, my drink (outside of bag tea or black coffee that I adjust myself) is ALWAYS different and not good: it's either too sweet, too strong, not enough flavour, incredibly watery, or too icy. It's also hit-or-miss with the quality of the donuts; sometimes they're perfect, but more often than not they are slightly old. This includes U.S. Timmie's, too. I love Timmie's, so I hope they take a page out of other restaurateurs' books and streamline the menu so their employees aren't overloaded and ONLY offer a handful of seasonal items that change every quarter.
While I was in high school, I would go to Dunkin Donuts for coffee nearly every morning before class with my brother or some friends, and even before the name change, we always referred to the store as “Dunkin”-you’d never ask “wanna get some coffee from Dunkin Donuts?”, you’d ask “wanna get Dunkin?” instead. I completely agree about the quality of their drinks, they can be either the best coffee you’ve ever had or completely undrinkable, nevertheless I have many good memories of starting my day with friends and some iced coffee from our neighborhood Dunkin!
Let me get this straight: You comment something that is unrelated to the fact that I have two DANGEROUSLY DASHING girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest TH-camr ever, having two hot girlfriends is really incredible. Yet you did not mention that at all. I am quite disappointed, dear busi

I live in Rhode Island. I believe that RI and Massachusetts have the highest concentration of DD shops in the country. Makes sense because they started in Boston. I have a 24/7 DD near me right off route 95. They have great iced coffee.
See, i sued to work as the head overnight baker from one of the locations up here in Minneapolis, it was miserable working the nights to prepare for that cursed day. I'm so glad I don't work there anymore. Screw National Donut Day.
I'm from the SF Bay Area and I've only been to the East Coast once back in 2010 and it was in Boston and the lower part of New Hampshire. I was blown away by how many Dunkin' Donuts locations there were especially compared to Starbucks.
Mike, I wanted to inform you on their “fresh” donuts. They do not make donuts in house, they order them from a central manufacturing location. There, they are made late in the afternoon (5-6 pm) and shipped to the stores after their (the store’s) closing time, delivered anywhere between 10 pm - 4 am the next day. So, those same donuts made 12 hours earlier are on the shelves at 5 am and those same donuts, unless sold out, will stay on the shelves until they close, anywhere between 7-9 pm. They will only make donuts in house if major ones are sold out earlier in the day, such as glazed or frosted. So by the end of the day, they are selling 24 hr PLUS+ old donuts. No discounts or clearance. Selling you day old donuts for full price that have had gnats reproducing on them all day. I know this because I worked there for 4 years.
They opened one 3 cities over. I filled the tank and rushed over to see what all the hype was. Bought two boxed and toke to a friends house. Nobody liked them, and I never went back. I now knw why LoL
Roman_Valdax Yeah I agree, that’s why I said “specialty” drinks. For me, not only is it too expensive but a latte or Frappuccino or whatever isn’t something I want to drink everyday anyway. It’s more of a once in a while thing.
Yeah I agree with you. We only have 1 Starbucks in my town and 5 Dunkin’ so I think that’s a popular opinion lol. I can’t justify spending $6 on one drink when I could get a coffee and a breakfast sandwich and a donut for that much at Dunkin
I don't think is has just too do with the marketing but also the relationships you build in the community around you. I have worked at Dunkin for 14 years and I am a Manager and I can tell you the amazing community and return customers help us grow. They spread the word and each new person that comes in is treated like family in hopes to have them as a regular customer also. It is hands down the best job I have ever had.
living in new england, there is at least 2 dunkin's in each town. when you grow up and marinate in dunkins, even after starbucks has become much more popular i still prefer dunkin
I like Dunks much better because they have food at reasonable prices (cheap, good donuts and good breakfast sandwiches, without the bougieness of Starbucks)
Here in Chicago, there's a joke about there being a Starbucks on every corner downtown, but Dunkin is king. With over 230 locations, we have the most Dunkin's of any city in the US.
I don’t like Dunkin’ Donuts donuts. They aren’t very good nowadays and I feel that Dunkin’ Donuts has lots it’s charm because their donuts have degraded in quality.
This is pretty good, my buddy just sent me this video because my great uncle (through marriage, ann aluisy) is bill Rosenberg, and I've read his book "Time to make the donuts" a handful of times growing up but it was cool to see what happened after he sold it cause I never really looked into it. He passed away right around the time i was born. The book is great and goes in depth in things like the name Dunkin donuts and how he handled quality control.
The best donut I ever had came from a single grocery store in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Their secret wasn’t very secret, but it was filled with cherry pie filling and topped with cream cheese icing. That was perfection, but you had to be there as it was coming out because it was very popular. They rarely had extras. I have yet to find anyone else that does that specific. I have since moved to Las Vegas, Nevada... so far no luck... and I even tried to recommend it to a few Krispy Kreme’s and Dunkin’s. They look at me like it was a crazy idea... but they did ask for recommendations...
I agree to the changing emphasis of Dunkin! I worked at an “old” store, which was the classic kind that most people are familiar with. They are slowly introducing a tap system into new stores which gives people in the lobby a direct view of how their coffee is being made. This kind of store is the one I work at currently, and in the one year gap I took from the company, there were so many changes that occurred, including dropping the name to just Dunkin’! I honestly can’t wait to watch how the company expands!
I still do enjoy the coffee there... But their donuts haven't been good since they stopped making them in the individual shops... And they lost focus on what made them famous by expanding their menu to offer a ridiculous amount of items... I'm not going to Dunkin Donuts for soup... 🤣
There's one Dunkin in my area of NJ that still bakes. The doughnuts definitely taste better and the coffee rolls are no joke the size of a frisbee. They can only fit like 4 of them on the rack up front.
Definitely agree. Never cared for their donuts, those mom and pop (usually Asian owned) donut shops that make them there are much better. I do like Dunkin Donuts coffee, especially the blend you can buy in stores, actually better than Starbucks IMO.
I actually found a place that has a bakery built in a few years ago. They seem to ship to other stores but have a little space for customers. It is in Manhattan at 148 and St. Nicholas. I don't venture that far uptown anymore but I sure miss those fresh bagels and donuts. Their coffee was never that great though...
@@laserspaceninja I wasn't aware any of them still had a bakery facility in operation... That's pretty cool... I like their iced coffee very much ... Thanks for that bit of info on that special shop 😃
I live in the midwest and I just assumed they were a moderately successful franchise that had enough locations making a profit to stay relatively safe financially. Then I went to New England for school. “Culture shock” is a strong word for a 12 hour drive east but man I’d never seen so many dunkin donuts’ before
Martin Maciel thanks for the advice! Or before closing where they practically start giving them away since they’re about to throw them out...if I’m lucky. I drive Uber at night. Nothing like a cupocoffee, cake donut and a smoke!
I managed a Dunkin. The shock I initially had when the donuts were premade and frozen… Not to mention the push they were starting to drop “donuts” and compete directly with Starbucks… but this was like a decade ago for me.
Tim Hortons having 5000 locations is impressive given that's more then a third as many locations as Dunkin that operates almost exclusively in Canada, which has 9% as many people as the United States
As a Canadian I came here wondering why Dunkin Donuts is everywhere cause everytime I’ve had it its been terrible. I am comparing it to Tim Hortons though. Genuinely shocked its regarded as good coffee/donuts
@Tenzin Nordon Tim Hortons has (or did have) a kiosk in Gila River Arena which opened in 2014. This makes some sense considering Gila River Arena is the home stadium of the Arizona Coyotes NHL team, so that kiosk is/was aimed at the visiting fans of other NHL teams.
love your content so much man. keep it up. I'm actually doing a research paper on the history of the Texas Instruments company because of how interesting your vid on them was.
I get Dunkin Donuts all the time, but I don't like coffee, I mainly get it for the donuts. I usually get a 1/2 dozen and 2 of them are always the strawberry frosted, I love those so much too! Its kinda sad to me that they are shifting more towards coffee since I think their donuts are way better. But I do like getting their mango pineapple refresher, just not the coffee.
I have a few thoughts on this video: 1. Even when Dunkin Donuts was placing more emphasis on donuts, coffee wasn't entirely out of the equation either. The name reportedly originated with the idea of dunking the donuts into the coffee, which according to the company was popularized by one of their executive architects. 2. Though they've more recently been going for a more diverse consumer base, DD's working class roots are still apparent, especially in the fact that they've expanded their menu to the point where they've essentially become a poor man's Starbucks. 3. I find it interesting that DD touted having a donut for every week of the year early on, and then merged with Baskin Robbins, a chain that touted 31 flavors of ice cream, one for each day in a month (assuming it's a 31-day calendar month.) 4. Even with consumers becoming more health and weight conscious, I have a feeling that dropping "Donuts" from the name will come back to bite them, because a simple, naked "Dunkin" is such a generic name that you can't tell what they sell. Of course, you could say the same thing about other company names, but it still sounds lazy and unspecific to me. Radio Shack tried this same approach with "The Shack," and it was such a miserable failure they had to revert back to the old name.
I can't imagine calling dunkin' donuts just 'dunkin'' it just feels so empty, you need those extra two syllables. i wouldn't call it a regular spot of mine but i don't mind stopping at one while on road trips
Everyone in my area has been mostly calling it Dunkin for as long as I can remember. Maybe it's a northeast thing. But for those of us who have been calling it that anyway, the change isn't a super big deal.
The company started the campaign to the name change long before it happened. Its been, what, about five years or so they have been doing commercials with the tagline "America runs on Dunkin". But, I don't even say let's get Dunkin Donuts. I say let's get donuts and at least 80% of the time it will be Dunkin. The other 20% will be local donut shoos that make some high quality and unique tasting donuts.
Tim Germer America runs on Dunkin has been their tagline since at least 2008. Edit I originally put 2005 but I’ll say 2008 to be safe. Point is it’s been a long time. Still don’t like the official change though, as DD is another one of their nicknames.
All Krispy Kweef has going for them is the fresh out of the oven glazed donuts. Dunkin is only good early in the day. I prefer the local donuts first thing in the morning.
Yeah I agree that Krispy Kreme has better donuts, but like that's all they have. Dunkin is always great for coffee, etc and "not bad" donuts And idek where the closest Krispy Kreme is...
Omg yes! I’m pretty sure I’d pick the strawberry sprinkle donut every time when gazing at the donuts as a child. Also, I think the success of Dunkin’ is the fact the appeal to working class and the promise of an energy boost (caffeine or sugar) with their product. Plus, their offerings are diverse test straightforward and you know what to expect every time you get in line.
When it was before quaratine, usually every day before school me and my mom would get coffee and bagels from them. Loved them, and they helped with school.
I've heard good things about the breakfast from Hardy's. I can't say because I've never been there during that time of day. KC is better known locally because they are in so many stores. My local Grocers use to have them delivered daily, as well as the local Speedway. AS for Donuts I've heard rave reviews about VooDoo Donuts by so many podcasters. To the point that the airport customs are giving boxes a pass if you told them its a 12 pack of VD's that your taking home to friends.
The “Business Wars” podcast did a great deep dive on the coffee war between Dunkin’ and Starbucks. It’s worth checking out. Also, we really need to get Panera on your list of companies to talk about. They’ve been doing some really innovative changes in their business over the past 5-6 years.
I had no idea that Dunkin Donuts only reached the West Coast until 2014! Growing up in Upstate New York, Dunkin Donuts was the most popular coffee and donut shop in the entire world to me since I can even remember, 1989
I have to say, as someone from New England it felt really funny to hear you talk about how weird it felt to say Dunkin. We've been calling it that the entire time, even before the switch! Especially Bostonians and people in wealthy CT towns lol
@david veilleux I agree. When they came back to Memphis, I was excited. I went, and was happy to see a fresh tray brought out. I bit into one, and it hadn’t thawed yet. Yech.
Fun, and extremely sad, fact: Krispy Kreme tried, years ago, to break into Dunkin's backyard by attempting to open up some brick and mortar locations in Connecticut, but failed. Now, of the five that had been opened, only two remain at the state's two casinos, and it's a shame, too. Krispy Kreme makes their donuts fresh on the premises while Dunkin' trucks theirs in pre-made.
Allen Morgan is it gone? When I lived in Illinois, I enjoyed steak ‘n Shake. There’s a chain in California called Smashburger, which is basically the same menu as steak ‘n shake.
got popular for milkshakes that many places didn't have with the fall of sonic until we got sick of the milkshakes. same how we got sick of the smoothies at wawas. at least where i live we get and dispose
I used to be a like 5 days a week Dunkin guy but they've really hurt me taking away menu items I loved and then the rewards system gut punch was the last straw for me. The most baffling menu loss was getting rid of ham entirely. It was the only real healthier alternative and just made for great midday puck me up snacks. I've been so disappointed with them the last 3 or 4 years. Went from 5 days a week there to probably a few times a month.
My dude you would get crucified for calling it “Dunkin Donuts” in New England. Everyone has always called it just “Dunkin” or “Dunks” since the beginning of time
I live in Boston (literally where the first location was made) and I always say Dunkin Donuts, I don't know of anyone who refers to it as that as anything else. Maybe "Dunkin" is said at times, but that just seems like it would lead to confusion. Someone might think you're saying "Duncan" or "Dunking" and that doesn't make much sense when you're talking about food. Maybe in other places in New England it's not common to say the whole name 🤔
@@Cookieolicity Hard disagree. Lived in Boston for a very long time, and it was only newcomers who call it by the full name. It's "Dunkin" across the board, and "Dunks" for a certain kind of Bostonian.
As a Bostonian I can say I remember when they used to be good. About 15-20 years they started using those cookie cutter eggs instead of real eggs. I remember in the early 2000s if you went there and got a breakfast sandwich it was pretty legit and they used those yellow/scrambles style eggs McDs uses but like actually good and fresh, and I had like fresh bacon bits and cheese mixed/melted in. The food is all premade now and comes in frozen or in the donuts case baked in a factory then shipped to the stores every morning
100% this. Back in the 80’s, you could get a warm fresh made donut. Nowadays it’s just partially stale food with coffee that tastes like cigarettes. There are so many better options around Boston.
@@killermalibu Bruegers is my go to these days, or I’ll find a diner. I go into Dunkies a few times a week to get my kid donuts, and I feel like I’m watching a bunch of robots when I see them ordering their food. They’ve been programmed to think that they’re actually eating real food when they’re eating glorified microwaved Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches. But yea I’m glad someone else remembers their glory days, I still fondly remember my mother getting my Dunkies breakfast sandwiches as a kid and the eggs and bacon were actually freshly made and not microwaved.
one thing you forgot is they used to make their doughnut in house and somewhere in the mid-1990s they cut it out and for me, that is when they went downhill. They started making them in a factory and having them shipped to their locations.
Its way easier to underpay people when they just have to throw them in the oven to heat them up. sadly that happened with a lot of bakeries too and even those here in germany so called "Bake shops" are very expensive for what you actually get and traditional bakeries get extinct cause not many people can afford their prices anymore.
Dunkin Donuts used to be good (decades ago), back when they were freshly made on site, but now that they arrive frozen, are proofed, iced and put in the case . . . THEY SUCK! The fact that people rave about their coffee only helps prove my point. I've NEVER hear people say, "Dunkin Donuts donuts? AMAZING!"
@@ShatteredDiscoBall Ok. I stand corrected . . . regarding them being frozen, but I'm still correct about them not being being made fresh onsite like they were decades ago.
I’m not sure about the rest of the country, but their success in Massachusetts specifically has a lot to do with CONVENIENCE. There are multiple locations in almost every city and town. I live in a suburb of Springfield, MA that has nine locations. You’re always within walking distance or a short drive of one.
Kripsy Kreme is trash too. I was never a big fan of Krispy Kreme. Their products are too sweet. I remember one year at work this chick bought me a box of Krispy Kreme for my birthday. I ate a few of them the other I just gave away to my roommates. When I need a donut I look for mom and pop spots that have high Yelp or Google review ratings. If I need a generic donut shop in LA we have a donut franchise called yum yum donuts. They're open 24/7 and they have good ass coffee. The local Mexican immigrants love that place. Don't go there during early am work hours. There's going to be a long line.
@@rmfinance1781 So I'm not the only one who thinks Krispy Kreme doughnuts are sickly sweet... barely edible. I don't understand American's addiction to sugar - high fructose corn syrup. I guess when it's present in every mass market food available in the country, you get use to it. I just avoid American franchise restaurants/shops in general for that reason.
I was stunned by how many I saw in Boston, but down south, meh, not so much. Maybe they are a drive through only business? I remember going inside, it was weird, creepy and lonely. Starbucks on the other hand has a snooty, hipster vibe, filled with the creatively unemployed Marxists.
Also the blue collar connection I'd say is their slogan, "America runs on Dunkin".
@@gordontaylor2815 I personally don't think it has to with politics as Dunkin isn't exactly conservative imho. I do agree with you about the pricing as Starbucks is way too expensive compared to Dunkin.

Nah man Dunkin's gone to shit in recent years, they used to be way way better.
"Dunkin'" just sounds like they neutered the name, the alliteration of "Dunkin' Donuts" was part of the fun of the brand imo.
My whole city has always called it "Dunkin" for as long as I can remember 😅
And the name was an action: you're taking your donut and dunking it.
Calling it just "Dunkin'" is like your saying the name "Duncan"; just doesn't work to me.
It's to avoid ambiguity for people that are not familiar with the brand and send a message that the company is more than donuts. I don't personally like it but I see why they did it.
If you live in the northeast no one calls it dunkin donuts its always been either dunkin, dunkies, dunks
Especially Massachusetts (where im from)
Used to be a Dunks employee myself.
I had no idea only 25 stores still made their own donuts. The cappuccinos are good but I’m worried they’re losing their working class reputation

FUN FACT:
In Japan they're all Mister Donut, not Dunkin'. I guess that one was already popular and established so after the acquisition they chose not to change the name into Dunkin' there. I'm glad, because their brand image is so much cuter and more wholesome with that friendly logo! They also have cute lil mascots and do all sorts of collaboration promotions, I love it.
Yep Japan is always about the kawaii image to make the people forget the atrocities they did in the past century.
It's still Mister Donut in El Salvador too. They have more of local vibe to them and serve breakfast.

There are several places where a Dunkins is across the street from another DD like on Revere beach parkway, Everett haha
BrockHomme93 can confirm I live right near Nashua, Southern NH loves Dunks just as much as people in Mass

I haven't been to a Timmie's in quite a while since, every time I go, my drink (outside of bag tea or black coffee that I adjust myself) is ALWAYS different and not good: it's either too sweet, too strong, not enough flavour, incredibly watery, or too icy.
My friend worked for a really small Dunkin's for a few years and would stay late into the night making donuts to sell the next day.
My store does a buy 6 get 6 deal after 2 PM, we try to get rid of as many as possible
That’s only for some stores. My sisters job gets some delivered the day of or the day before and then make the rest of them by hand when she comes in
Hannah Ward it’s not full price most places in the afternoon and in the evening it’s dirt cheap they are 29¢ after 10 pm
They opened one 3 cities over. I filled the tank and rushed over to see what all the hype was. Bought two boxed and toke to a friends house. Nobody liked them, and I never went back. I now knw why LoL
Given the choice between Starbucks and DD coffee I’d chose DD every time. Starbucks has great ‘specialty’ drinks but DD if we’re talking coffee.
You can’t justify the price of Starbucks drinks tho. It’s like 10 bucks for a large where it’s like 3 at dunkies
Elizabeth Gatsby You can just get a coffee at DD. You don't have to get a latte or something.
Starbucks is WAY overpriced.

For real. I’m from Maine and even the smallest towns (3,000/4,000 people) have at least one Dunkin.

I don’t like Dunkin’ Donuts donuts. They aren’t very good nowadays and I feel that Dunkin’ Donuts has lots it’s charm because their donuts have degraded in quality.
Agreed. They are usually pretty flavorless and dry. Local bakeries have them beat by a mile
They don't make their donuts on site anymore. They're all trucked in now. So you don't get the freshness they once had.
Instead of fresh frying their donuts from dough, the pre fry them, ship them frozen, and then just bake them at the store. Changed about 20 years ago.

@Peter Nadreau definitely inspired by his take on it... And he's right... 😆
Answer to the question: New England
I live in the midwest and I just assumed they were a moderately successful franchise that had enough locations making a profit to stay relatively safe financially. Then I went to New England for school. “Culture shock” is a strong word for a 12 hour drive east but man I’d never seen so many dunkin donuts’ before
Their coffee is better tasting and way cheaper than Starbucks.
Dunkin is kind of a religion here lol
Best coffee and corn muffins!
I'm 22 and working a blue collar job and this video is spot on explaining why I always eat coffee and donuts at lunch

I had Dunkin’ Donuts a couple of weeks ago.
Sadly it wasn’t a good experience because their donut holes were stale.
Yeah, my guess is you went later in the day. They used to be 24 hours and frequently made donuts. But I think it’s only in the morning now
Yeah I work at a Dunkin’ so I would recommend you go either between open and 12pm and then between 3pm and 8pm
Martin Maciel thanks for the advice! Or before closing where they practically start giving them away since they’re about to throw them out...if I’m lucky. I drive Uber at night. Nothing like a cupocoffee, cake donut and a smoke!
Their treats aren't that bad! I like their breakfast croissants.
I miss Tim Hortons, from Buffalo NY where some are located. Now in AZ not here as of yet maybe one day...
As a Canadian I came here wondering why Dunkin Donuts is everywhere cause everytime I’ve had it its been terrible. I am comparing it to Tim Hortons though. Genuinely shocked its regarded as good coffee/donuts
It’s over 10% but you’re still right
@Tenzin Nordon Tim Hortons has (or did have) a kiosk in Gila River Arena which opened in 2014. This makes some sense considering Gila River Arena is the home stadium of the Arizona Coyotes NHL team, so that kiosk is/was aimed at the visiting fans of other NHL teams.
Lady T Oates I heard that there’s more Tim Hortons locations than Dunkin locations in Buffalo, is that true?
love your content so much man.
I would drink their iced coffee even if I lived on Pluto's frozen surface.
I would rather die than ever drink a hot coffee
Julian--Good news, they now have a location on Pluto.
I have a few thoughts on this video:
3. I find it interesting that DD touted having a donut for every week of the year early on, and then merged with Baskin Robbins, a chain that touted 31 flavors of ice cream, one for each day in a month (assuming it's a 31-day calendar month.)
I loved working for them. Awesome people and unlimited coffee/donuts
Could you do a video on Goodwill? Interesting industry and very little known about it..
I can't imagine calling dunkin' donuts just 'dunkin'' it just feels so empty, you need those extra two syllables. i wouldn't call it a regular spot of mine but i don't mind stopping at one while on road trips
im guessing you dont live in new england
Dunkin’ Donuts is just incredible.
It’s a point where whenever my family goes out of town, everyday we hit one up.
Im more of a krispy kream person. I used to like dunkin but that was 10 years ago
What do you think converted you?
All Krispy Kweef has going for them is the fresh out of the oven glazed donuts. Dunkin is only good early in the day. I prefer the local donuts first thing in the morning.
Krispy Kreme is 10 times better
Once you've had a Krispy Kreme donut, there's no going back to Dunkin'
Yeah I agree that Krispy Kreme has better donuts, but like that's all they have. Dunkin is always great for coffee, etc and "not bad" donuts
And idek where the closest Krispy Kreme is...
Dunkin: How many donuts do you want
Cops: Yes
Thank you kim jong un
Kim, I love you, I can’t believe you like the same content as me, wanna meet up sometime, I’ll fly out to Pyongyang
@@rykerr5491 i often see him commenting on other videos ive seen on TH-cam. Lmao!!
When it comes to Donuts
Krispy Creme>Dunkin'
When it comes to everything else in breakfast
Dunkin'>>Everyone
100% agreed
I think Krispy Creme doughnuts taste better.
@@samuelmeasa9283 down here in Virginia we have bojangles and hands down they have the best biscuits. And they serve breakfast all day long.
I personally love donuts from both establishments, but I will agree that some of Krisy Creme donuts are better. Well, the glazed is.

Starbucks coffee is so nasty it's straight up burnt beand

The “Business Wars” podcast did a great deep dive on the coffee war between Dunkin’ and Starbucks. It’s worth checking out. Also, we really need to get Panera on your list of companies to talk about. They’ve been doing some really innovative changes in their business over the past 5-6 years.
I feel like the two companies really appeal to a different crowd.
Yeah like lowering the quality of there food but increasing the prices
Dunkin’ is Taco Bell, Starbucks is chipotle
I had no idea that Dunkin Donuts only reached the West Coast until 2014! Growing up in Upstate New York, Dunkin Donuts was the most popular coffee and donut shop in the entire world to me since I can even remember, 1989
I have to say, as someone from New England it felt really funny to hear you talk about how weird it felt to say Dunkin. We've been calling it that the entire time, even before the switch! Especially Bostonians and people in wealthy CT towns lol
Yes! Haha I just made this comment. I’m from upstate NY and we’ve been calling it Dunkin’ for as long as I can remember lol
They used to be good when they fried their donuts in-house.
Gary Collins yep. I have a krispy kreme right down the road from dunkin and I’ll hit up dunkin for coffee and krispy kreme for doughnuts
Agree
When did they stop?
@@WaffleEBay12 yearssss ago-- the donuts are delivered every morning from a local kitchen though. its just easier and more convenient on franchisees
I live in the Boston area and there is literally a location on every corner, it's crazy.

Company Man “What happened to Steak ‘n Shake?”
Allen Morgan is it gone? When I lived in Illinois, I enjoyed steak ‘n Shake. There’s a chain in California called Smashburger, which is basically the same menu as steak ‘n shake.
@@NoirFan01 there's a smash burger in Michigan here and there is a restaurant chain with a similar name called steak shack
got popular for milkshakes that many places didn't have with the fall of sonic until we got sick of the milkshakes. same how we got sick of the smoothies at wawas. at least where i live we get and dispose
They're still around , but their steak tastes like shoe leather .
Wayne Curr Did not know they actually serve steak. The idea was the hamburgers were made of ground round or something similar.
I still use the "Time to make the donuts" line when I go to work sometimes, so that's pretty burned into my brain.
That always pops into my head when I am tired & have a task to do. Most people I know still say it.
My dude you would get crucified for calling it “Dunkin Donuts” in New England. Everyone has always called it just “Dunkin” or “Dunks” since the beginning of time
Delaney Hughes lol true
Delaney Hughes meanwhile on LI people would look at you like you had three heads if you ever tried calling it “Dunks”😂
Probably why they changed it to that, since they started and probably have the highest concentration in the States
AMAZING!"
They're coffee is disgusting imo
And im an avid caffeine addict. Dozens of cups a day
Love the coffee hate the donuts
The donuts are delivered from a factory or bakery in the morning, they don’t come frozen
I don’t really care for sweets but when I want a doughnut I usually prefer Krispy Kreme over Dunkin’ Donuts. Especially when that hot light is on 🍩
Kripsy Kreme is trash too.
I just avoid American franchise restaurants/shops in general for that reason.
i literally do need this video cause i've never in my travel life have been in a dunkin' donuts that had more than four customers
I was stunned by how many I saw in Boston, but down south, meh, not so much. Maybe they are a drive through only business? I remember going inside, it was weird, creepy and lonely. Starbucks on the other hand has a snooty, hipster vibe, filled with the creatively unemployed Marxists.
