I’m American and going back in June for my third trip to Bulgaria. This is getting me excited for my trip ! I even understand a few Bulgarian words now.
Great!
As a Bulgarian I am really surprised some of these market vendors actually knew sufficient English to talk to foreign clients.
They already know english because most of them are ex-workers from England, Germany, Italy, Spain and so on. We are 2024 after all. I don't know someone who doesn't speak english at least on a street level
I've heard you a couple of times now refering to Banitsa being made from puff pastry, but it's not. It's from pastry sheets. They don't fluff and the whole preparing process is very different than what is made with fluff pastry - бутерка (butter-ka). Everyone can make a butterka, but I assure you making a proper Banitsa is much, much more difficult. It's a benchmark in rating a woman! 😃
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
A bulgarian viewwer here. Loving the content mate. Keep it up. Fun fact :One of the first orders from AMAZON in 1995 was actually from Bulgaria :)
pioneers again;) mr. Bezos needs to invest here anf open an big office😅
I recognized that man with the two shops from a Kurt Caz Video from 4 years ago. What are the odds lol
me too haha
i am from Sofia, and yes it is him. LOL
i was wondering why this shop looks familiar
Love your videos mate! BTW we have a lot history with Italy. After the Proto-bulgarians left Volgan Bulgaria the 5 sons of Chan Kubrat went on their separate ways, one stayed there, one Chan Asparukh made it to modern day Bulgaria, one went to Northern Macedonia, one to Northern Serbia AAAnd one in Southern Italy. Till this day they have Bulgarian names of villages and places. It would be cool to go there and find the Bulgarian link there :)
Yooo,your pronunciation is perfeeect
Thank you so much, i am doing my best !! 👍😃
The small onions are called "arpadjik" and are used for planting.
And for "попска яхния" :)
And for the people from Pazardjik city!!! ;)
@@lliomm9193 No, we don't plant people from Pazardjik
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Always enjoy your videos mate. You keep it interesting. Enjoy your travels always. I'm glad you are out and about again. I was having Justin Eastern Europe withdrawls.
Great to see you back on your feet! That was a lovely market! Mekica reminds me of funnel cake. I love that style of music too. The pottery shop was outstanding! Definitely shared to all 3 of my social media platforms 😅 oh, and my mom made great galupci, but she used boiled cabbage.
Another fine production, produced by the Honorable Justin. Cheers
Those little onions are very good in soups and stews. When they slow cook they become very tender and delicious. You can cook a nice roast with those and other veggies as well. My mother would do that growing up.
Thank you so much for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Fascinating videos. Came across your videos by chance. I can't stop watching the Bulgaria ones
so good video justin friend! I shared the previous video in my Facebook group and i need to share this too

Justin - always a pleasure watching your travels.
Thank you so much for you feedback, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Thanks, Justin, I am seeing my own country from a completely new point of view with your videos.
Next time you should definitely visit a small town or a village, or even a few. So you can see another Bulgaria. And also some outddors in nature... in Rhodopes or Stara Planina. Even hiking in the mountains or forests! You're gonna like it. 👍
Best regards
Keep them coming Justin we missed you !
Thank you so much, always nice to hear from you. Stay tuned for plenty more, all the best! 👍😃
Thank you for the great overview of our beautiful country🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. 👍👌
yeey...another justinian video :-)
Thanks for watching, my friend!!👍😃
Another great video. I need to visit Bulgaria. Next time I'm in Greece, I'll make a short trip I think. I recently made a vlog video in a food market in northern Greece, in Veroia. Great places to get a sense of the culture as you said.
Welcome back! Hoping whatever was ailing, you is bagged up and gone. Be well.
Thank you so much for the kind words, i appreciate the support!! 👍😃
keep it up i love your videos
Thank you so much, i appreciate the support!! 👍😃
There is this sweet in Bulgaria called "tolumbichka", it is similar to churos, except soaked in sugar syrup
always watch ur bg videos, weirdly enough you're walkign around my neighbourhood but havent seen you, next time I guess :D
Now im hungry 😂😂😂😂
I need to trt it bro! Excellent video as always 👌
Thanks for watching, my friend!! 👍😃
Yo, Justin!!! I've been following your channel for awhile now and i'm honestly intrigued what a marvelous and nice person you seem to be. When I saw you covering Varna, Golden Sands and some other Bulgarian cities I felt proud and also a little giddy, cause I thought to myself "Yo, it would be so nice to grab a nice beer and some Banitsa (haha) with Justin if he came to Sofia one day". Imagine my suprise, seeing you just randomly pass Lion's Bridge and the Women's market, considering the fact that I live 5 minutes from there by foot. :D Great job, man! Ping me if you wanna grab a beer for real next time you visit!
By the way, the women's market might not be best representation of a bulgarian market. I mean, it is more than a little bit dodgy - lots of drunks, pickpockets and gypsies, and finding anyone who speaks English there is literally a miracle. You are incredibly friendly to everyone, I just hope you're being safe. I'm sure you're anything but naive, considering your enormous travelling experience. ;)
I always get hungry watching your videos, keep it up master of fun and friendship. 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind comment, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Nice one mate, where abouts from London are you and how did you learn to speak so many languages ?
Good job 💪👌
Regards from Poland
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! 👍😃
Great to see you back on form mate...actually talking of empty shop units, most towns in uk a common site.Just got back from Leipzig ,Germany, didnt see one in the city centre.. oh loved the only built theatre in the old DDR ,what a beautiful design
Leipzig one cool city. 😊
@@ashleyupshall7641 you are right, loved the city, still a tad traditional ..would go back without hesitation
My friend go to town Vidin north west tern Bulgaria , I think that would have many staff for another video ! Go to central station "centralnna gara" and you can get bus or train there!
Hi my friend, Thank you for the idea, i appreciate it!! 👍😃
Why don't you explore the deep province sometime? You will see the difference between the modern lifestyle and the past. In the Rhodopes mountains there are still people who live 200 years in the past and its amasing to learn more about them and i'm pretty sure people will find it interesting. If you need help with finding places like that you might just make a online meeting with some bulgarian subscribers of yours and decide where to go. Also, amasing video!
Good job Justin! Make a collaboration with Ben- Bald and Bankrupt, please. It would be awesome.
Wonderful video Nice food Market. jk
Thank you so much my friend! 👍😃
Your BG is pretty good, you got some things wrong, Banitsa is not made from puff pastry it is made from filo pastry, Boza is generally made from rye/wheat mix. With banitsa I much prefer ayran which is like watered down plain yogurt.
Overall good work.
Thank you, my friend, for watching and commenting.
Wow you speak really good Bulgarian 😊
Thank you so much, i try my best!! 😃👍
Good afternoon sir!
Hello my friend! 😃👍
Your Bulgarian accent is almost native!!! I am super surprised!
Thank you so much, i really appreciate it! 👍😃
Yeah that guy was following you. This place there is generally considered actually one of the most dangerous places in Bulgaria especially for pitpocketing.
Hi Justin 👋
Lovely video once again 🎉
How can I reach out to you if I don't have Instagram?
Hello mate,
So happy you like the content.
You can email me on justin@justineasterneurope.com
Great video
Thank you so much for watching!👍😃
How come so you speak Bulgarian so well, my friend? As you might notice i follow you and wish you to live here one day! Best place for retirement, quite honestly. You can like in many houses here un Bulgaria, they're actually cheap (20K euro can buy you a great house)
I recommend you to visit Plovdiv if you are not somewhere else already. I am sure you will be amazed.
Поздрави, прекрасен човеко!
Hi my friend, Thank you for the idea, i appreciate it!! 👍😃
Bravo a quel signore gentile di Yambol
Me as well!
👍🙂
That last restaurant seems abandoned for decades lol! But an amazing couple of traditional shops before that!
Agreed… thanks for watching my friend! 👍👌
Bonjour Justin,
Les Bulgares disent "merci" et "bon appétit", comme en français ?
Cela m'a surpris 🤔
Have a nice day ! Please continue your videos 🙂
merci is widely used since more than a century when French was most modern language in Europe.
"bon appétit" is rare, "priaten apetit" is much more common. Priaten means pleasant in Bulgarian. But there are a lot of French loan words in Bulgarian that most of the Bulgarians even don't know that they are french.
@@jordan9339 thank you very much ! 🙂
Ihave from Bulgaria Neighbor Armenian man every time say hi His nice
👍😃
dude ur Bulgarian is amazing
Thank you, i try my best! 👍😃
1:30 well we actually had Lions living in the Balkans, but they went extinct in II-III century
Thanks for sharing!! 👍😃
We bought plates from this guy. Such a character.
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
The paper which is wrapped around the Banitsa ,is to take all the grease from it, without getting on your fingers and hands, that`s why its ruff and thick.
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
yeah they sell the banitsa without anything as an option if you're bringing it home and eating it with a block of cheese and some jam, The closest thing I had to a mekitsa is a bignet maybe?
I think the small onions are to put in the ground in ur garden no?
Looks like a pretty affordable place. How is the nightlife and the summer activities for singles?
Very ok.
best in EU😅
I had to check you as you wasn't on recommandation
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! 👍😃
no problem@@J.E.E If you wanna eat that (sarma) cabbage roll , I suggest you to pass the border from Bulgaria, thru Romania. In Brasov, there's Stana Turistica.
Have a look if you wanna eat amazing things like sarmale :)
boza - weetabix smoothie :D
👍🙂
Nice video, but one correction: Amazon has long been available in Bulgaria. In fact, the first order with Amazon, came from Bulgaria in 1995. Jeff Bezos has mentioned that in several interviews over the years.
Thank you for the input, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
@@J.E.E you're welcome, brother! Keep up the good work!
Justin, you went to the women's market, a woman got impressed by you and you ignored her... It's the shortest love story with unhappy ending :D 16:23
😆😆😆
HI from London😊. Yes, the lion is the symbol of Bulgaria, but unfortunately Bulgaria is now ruled only by hyenas.
Thank you for the video👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think it is women shopping place in the past. Well it is not the best place to visit in Sofia, but still unique and good.
Yoto knows - this is the best banitca on the market! 👍👍👍🙂
Thanks you so much for your input, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Good video but the correct pronunciation is SofIA in one go (not Sofi.A...) and you should use fewer superlatives😉
Hi my friend, Thank you for the tip, i appreciate it!! 👍😃
Bulgaria has its own version of amazon called emag its basically the same
Thank you very much for your input, i really appreciate it! 👍😃
fucking finally someone having banitsa with boza instead of ayran, thats the way to go my dude
👍😃
The litlle onion is for sowinгg.BTW,the tomatos is from Turkey.....(come sumer to eat the best tomato! :P )
Thank you very much for your input! 👍🙂
Hey Justin, talking about bein aware look at this big beard guy, we can see him following you at 9:53, and 10:20, and he is still there 11:36 , looking to pull something out of your bag ...bata
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
I cant believe u found so cheap tomatoes and peppers😂
👍🙂
its actually точени кори, not a puff pastry. i dont know the word in english, but its the same one they use in baklava.
Thanks for sharing, i really appreciate it!! 👍😃
Its not the just a city it is the capital of Bulgaria ..
Thank you very much for your input!
:)
👍🙂
I don't think the banitsas are made with puff pastry. Those are different. The homemade banitsa is definitely made with filo dough, that's what I buy when I want to make it here in the US and it tastes like home
Thanks for sharing!! 👍😃
Omg this guy speak very good Bulgarian language .In Bulgaria there is no more real Boza :(
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. 👍👌
ur mistaking puff pastry dough for phyllo dough, yes we have puff pastries but the result is more like a croissant, banitsa is made with phyllo dough
Thank you very much for your input! 👍🙂
Sofia is supposed to be pronounced with a stress the first syllable. I was causing locals to cringe when stressing the I.
Thank you very much for your input! 👍😃
Congrats for speaking bulgarian 🎉 but just a side note: traditional bulgarian white cheese is not feta 😊 feta is a greek version of white cheese 😊
Thanks for sharing 👍😃
dai my ot nai dobrite :D :D ::D toi e anglichanin HAHAHAHAHAhahahaha
Im suprized that u liked the the женски пазар,its a little scary for me.
Imagine if one of the pigs feet were manicured 💅
Banitsa is made from filo pastry not puff pastry, just saying.
Thank you very much for your input! 👍🙂
love your work@@J.E.E
What's the story with destroying everyplace with graffiti in Eastern Europe. Be proud of your history don't destroy.
Where are the women? :-)
Apparently they left hundred years ago!! Thanks for watching ! 👍😃
Този пазар е нищо подобно на това което беше 30 години назад
Avoid that market, full of scams, low-life people around, pickpocket thieves...
Thank you very much for your input! 👍🙂
No offence but Sofia looks horrible🤣
🤔
Evala, brato. I like you. Continue to travel in Bulgaria, but try other cities, Sofia is the worst... You can go to Rila mountain - the best place I have ever been... 🫣
Thanks for the advice, i will try it next time!! 👍😃
I am Bulgarian and I hate it
