  • Located approximately 75 miles north of New York City on the east bank of the Hudson River, Poughkeepsie was settled over three hundred years ago by Dutch and English immigrants. The village grew quickly as merchants shipped agricultural produce from its hinterland and manufactured goods from numerous industries on sloops and steamboats on the metropolis to the south. Poughkeepsie was incorporated as a city in 1854 and reached its highest population a century later, with bustling retail and commercial trade in a vibrant downtown. However, as with almost all older cities in the northeast and upper mid-west of the United States, Poughkeepsie experienced a major decline throughout the middle of the 20th century. Manufacturing businesses, retail establishments, and many segments of the population left the city while suburbs grew in the surrounding town and countryside. In the 21st century, the city continues to change.
A Digital Tour of Poughkeepsie is an attempt to understand the City of Poughkeepsie as a small urban center that has an important human history and continues to evolve over time. Narrated by Harvey Flad (Vassar College Emeritus Professor of Geography), this DVD explores the landscape and history of 15 Poughkeepsie landmarks and neighborhoods.

My family lived in Smith Street Projects in the 50's when they were first built on through the early 60's. It was a wonderful place to live then, working class families and IBM enployees, everyone who applied for housing there at that time had to be employed, have good standing credit and references. There were maintenance and grounds keepers who kept the lawns green and freshly cut, I still remember the smell of the grass being cut and the sound of the lawn mowers. The center which was the social center of the projects held parties and dances and had counselors who during the summertime taught the children all kinds of crafts and games. The Showers (fire hydrant ) was swept clean everyday by Jimmy aka Polk we would call him, the playground had a beautiful swing set on both sides of the playgrounds and games were given out for all the kids to play with, Jimmy would hand them out and store them away in the garage at the end of the day.The laundry rooms were clean and well maintained. The projects slowly went into disarray during the early 60s due to different managment, they didn't give a shit who moved in and my family moved as well as other families during this change over. The narrator failed in saying the so called fore father's of Poughkeepsie would of been disappointed in Smith Street Projects being built!!!! He should of said they would have been disappointed when management changed hands! It was a great place to live with beautiful families and great childhood memories I will never forget all the people and diverse backgrounds of the people who lived there.

I love Poughkeepsie and lived here from 1986 to 2005 with a few years in Albany and Highland. I moved up from the Bronx and met a lot of really good people here but fell in love with the river and hills. I now live in Manhattan and part time in Wappingers Falls because I just cannot leave the beautiful Hudson Valley-My wife comes up often especially in the Summer. We swim in the river at Kingston point and also at Redwing. I spent years fishing for carp and usually did not care if I caught one as it was a joy just being by the river.

I grew up here. The railroad bridge burned in '74 not the late 1970's. My mother came home from somewhere and told my father. Several days later we drove under it and I could see the damage. It was interesting to see trains crossing there when I was young.

Yes GS - I was sent home from school that day cause my school (Franklin Elementary at the time - on Delafield St) was almost directly under the bridge.

This does show a great amount of the history of Poughkeepsie, but since it's been produced lots of things have changed here. The railroad bridge was successful in becoming the Walkway Over the Hudson state park, the rail bed is now known as the rail trail through most of Dutchess & Ulster counties. And yes, there is a major supermarket back in the city again, right in the location of where they showed the rite aid on Main st.

This looks like a beautiful place to live. You can tell a lot when the projects look appealing too, where people who live there have a say and are presented as moms who care. Kinda love that.
