My mom introduced me to this film...it was shown on my local tv station all the time in NYC, and I was captivated by the soundtrack..

I can imagine. The music was written by William Schuman, a great American composer.

Robert Mitchum was a very great actor, and my all-time favorite one, too.

So that's where we saw Love and Hate on the knuckles of a character! My boyfriend pointed out we'd seen it before... it was in 'Do the Right Thing'! Radio Rashid had brass knuckles with love on one side, and hate on the other. We didn't know that he gave the same speech that Mitchum did, tho. What a cleverly hidden homage to a fine classic that Spike Lee admires. Now I wish I knew what his other pics were

It could be due to the studio or testing screenings. It must be very difficult to make a great film and satsify an audience on all levels. I honestly believe Spike Lee is a great filmmaker and deserves to be in the ranks of the American filmmaking giants as well as Brian DePalma.

I love several of Spikes films, but he always seems to have trouble ending a picture. Both he and Kevin Smith have the tendency to over due

I know it's been 7 years, but I still feel it's important to note that I think 25th Hour had a perfect ending.
Also love your nickname, one of my favourite movies ever (original of course).

James agee didn't do the script . Charles Laughton turned his script down and rewrote the one that ended up being used.

What is your source for that? I have a feeling that Laughton, as the director, simply made some changes in James Agee's script.

You are wrong and this is an old myth. His script was overlong but he remained on the payroll to the end of shooting and worked with Laughton on trimming it down. Many of his additions not in the novel were retained and add greatly to the movie. This is based on correspondence descovered relatively recently (last 20 years). He even offered to give Laughton a shared screen credit, which Laughton turned down.

@@loge10 That's what I heard at the two day screenings of the film at Berkeley Film archive & it's supporting documentation. Agee made the script much too lreworked it

Spike Lee meeting Robert Mitchum would have been rather interesting. Somehow I don't think they would have really got along well, especially Mitchum towards Lee. they certainly seem to have been on the opposite ends of the political spectrum, but who knows?

Over do it* with over the top actions that break the story. Spike's ego is off putting sometimes as well. But he had good taste with the remarkable night of the hunter.

It is an outrage and a crime that a great artist like Spike Lee cannot get the funding from studios for his films.

Charles Laughton couldn't get funding for a film after this film flopped. So sad.
