Martin, how does one actually make remix? Do you recreate the track? Do you do it on top of it? How does that work? What software are you using? Ableton?

Likely, he would attain the original stems or individual tracks from the original artist. He would receive the drums, the bass like, the melody, and the strings and pads etc all as separate tracks without any of the other sounds leaking in, giving him clean audio to play with. It is likely he gets them as audio tracks so he can use parts and add his own effects. Or he can attain the midi files and re create the original sound using sound synthesis, this would be a whole lot harder, but would allow him a lot more options to keep the uniqueness of the original sound however allowing him a lot more creativity and potential to put his own spin on it, without moving too far away from the original sound. And I would agree Ableton would be the best program to use for this project, but you can also do the same in Login, Pro Tools, Reason, and even Fruity Loops.
