Did you buy this new or used? I asked because if it's used, then it sounds like someone disconnected the fan which will cause it to overheat and shut off. Also, change the thermal paste between the GPU/CPU heatsinks as well as the IHS (Integrated Heat Shield/Spreader) to allow proper cooling. If it was purchased new, then it sounds like the GPU is failing about to go YLOD.
during the 30 days had you played on it for long periods of time regularly? I am not having the message come up but am often getting games crashing regularly especially in the last month, I have had it I think just over a year
You know, there is a very good possibility that the heat sensor for the PS3 has somehow just got messed up big time, or it may have gotten over sensitive. Because this is not usual to happen to a PS3, OR an Xbox, I mean, you can't buy something new and get a big problem a month later unless you did something to it (not blaming you or anything). My Ps3 had overheating problems before but i manager to fix it. Here is the tutorial 1. Hold down the power button until you hear 3 separate beeps MAKE SURE THE PS3 IS OFF! 2. Connect your controller with the charging cable and press the Playstation button 3. By now you should get a a black screen with 4 options, choose Factory Reset. All your data will still be saved but your Hardware will be changed back to when it came out of the box. 4. Your system will now reboot and as soon as it starts up your PS3 should be up and going! Hope this helped you out if you have not yet gotten rid of your PS3
I play my originally 80gb now 320gb fat model for hours non stop and I don't have issues. I have a friend is experiencing the same issue as you but his ps3 slim is a lot older. I will update you since I am going to probably take it apart and see if I can find the issue. On that note go old school with a CECHL01 model. It is the best system I have ever owned.
yea i feel you on that, my xbox had it 4 yrs, max hrs i play it 6-2am, on weekends, and on weekdays 5 hrs, and i give it long breaks, it all depends on how you take care of your stuff.

what i did is you reset your PS3 , only standard settings and then it worked again.. i dont know if you tried that to but mine worked again when i reset the standard settings.

They put too much thermal compound on the CPU and GPU. The compound touches the board and the machine thinks it's over heating. Or, they used too little or left air bubbles and machines overheated. Re-compound the GPU and CPU correctly, and i also suggest drilling air holes in the cover over the fan.

I went through same shit i had the fat 60g ps3 from release and died on me sometime in 2010 now i have the slim and so far so good. had this problem, opened up the case and found the Fan was stuck and not spinning so unstuck the fan and now works oke again.. but the device is very tightly enclosed in plastic with few vent holes so best to also stick a fan next to a vent as these should of been designed with more vent holes so it makes you think did Sony deliberately make these so they would eventually just die from over heating in the end.. maybe that is what they wanted and then release the next version of playstation.. money making tactics it seems
Bro I've had my 120g slim now for maybe 2 years. It just started turning off on me, not even the red power button would be on after it shut off. I took it apart cleaned out all the dust, still does it I dont get a warning screen saying its too hot like you though. It just shuts right off. I unplug the power from the back of the ps3 and plug it back in then I can start it up again. I noticed the fan doesnt kick on high anymore so I use a box fan pointed at the system and it hasnt shut down since.
To fix that problem. Don't play too much.. Every 2-4 hours give it a break.. Put the ps3 on standby mode to cool it down(the cooling fan runs even on standby mode). Not only your helping the ps3 not to overheat but also you're giving your eyes a rest..
@joegally9 no there shouldn't if they got option like that it will make the hdd work harder and plus xbox 360 as it but it doesn't let you play the game without the disc still
alllways stand your ps3s upright. laying them down causes heating issues, can fry your mother board which will affect the functionality of your fan and so on.
its not the vents when the ps3 takes air in it pushes it against the heatsink fins all the dust build up is on the fins and is blocking airflow my bro had the same prob took it apart cleaned the fins, 1 it does not overheat, 2 it is much quieter

Probally you shouldn't play everyday for like six hours you shouldn't put it under pressure I have left my ps3 slim on for a day and a half without overheating because I take care of it just leave it for like a two day rest that's what I did after I left it on that long

@joegally9 No, It most games are installed to HDD and plays from that install, Disc is required to play just because of that you could just install a game to your system and then give the disc away to someone else, that is why disc is required, and noise is made by fans, more you play fans work harder and noisier playstation 3 gets. Blu-Ray read speed is too low to games be played right off of it, there still might be some data that is read from the disc, but still mostly just from HDD.
Ok I know how to fix it. Get rid of that TV because I'm pretty sure your PS3 is dying over having to run on that TV Then set it up on a 1080p HD Television. I promise it will work.

Any advice? Anybody? I've got a lot of game history that I don't want to lose. I backup every six months to a year, but haven't as much since I purchased the PS4.

the power coird with the white writng on it make sure when you plug it in the back its facewing up you got the power backwords and overheating

open it up and check the fan connector.
