Having been on parade myself I'm really feeling for those troops holding up the flags. Standing at attention for that long your legs and feet get numb and it's easy to even pass out. It's nice to see that there is someone, most likely a Senior NCO, checking up on them to make sure they're doing ok.
Around 12-14 are kept active and operational at any one time, flown every day too. I've spoken to the pilots. The rest are kept in storage and rotated around to keep all the aircraft ready for operations with minimal maintenance if they are needed. it's not like we're going to war any time soon. We have a similar number of Gripen's than the air forces of our neighbours combined. They don't have very good planes either.
@@ladderman2255 Sure thing. We have 17 single-seater variants, along with 9 twin-seater trainers. We also have 23 BAE Hawk 100's, intended for ground attack mainly but they are capable of basic A2A combat.
30 years ago the army received 25% of the national budget. So it is not fair to compare the SANDF today with the old SADF. I have great respect for the SANDF leadership and the capabilities they were able to maintain despite having a terrible budget.

And why would China decide on that? South Africa preaches peace in the world not war. We are not a war loving nation and we are not in an arms race with any country.
We have the 3rd largest Army in Africa, and a military budget exceeding that of all our neighbours combined. It is almost perfectly sized for our strategic position. Decently well trained too. it doesn;'t have great operational reach for foreign deployments, but it was never designed for that. Not even under the old Apartheid government.

Overwhelming majority of the soldiers here are fit and dutifull. It is even an artillery unit, and even they keep fit too.
