    Had Nokia back in 2012 and got my best shots with it. Nokia 808 had something that none of the modern smartphone cameras, with cool specs on paper, have: detailed, NATURAL looking images, without over sharpening, over contrasting, over saturation, and aggressive noise reduction that makes everything look like a cheap plastic.

    Red is a color very difficult for cameras as it is easy to clip and turn into a softer tone like vermillion or even orange. Is amazing to see how the reds in the Nokia photos are deeper, true red, not by virtue of artificial saturation but a quality sensor and lens.

  • @nikytamayo
    @nikytamayo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wouldn't have called it that far for the 808. It did take some lively photos with nice, crisp contrast, but you're losing so much detail in the shadows and highlights that you are getting with a more modern phones like the Mi 11 Ultra. You can get the look by compressing the image from the Ultra in an editing tool, but it will take much more than that to bring back in the blown out skies on some of those pictures.
    Still an awesome performance for such an old unit, but scoring from the bench here, I didn't have it leading in this race.

    • @farishanafiah8461
      @farishanafiah8461 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That shadows and highlights loss is why the Nokia has more realistic image processing. Xiaomi's dynamic range does work wonders in lowlight and HDR, but definitely not for daylight. There's almost no contrast and too much highlights from the daylight photos.

    • @nikytamayo
      @nikytamayo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farishanafiah8461 Yes, it can appear that way, but that's data you can work with in post that would otherwise be lost.
      If you want the same clipped highlights, you simply stick the Xiaomi in Pro Mode, and it'll give you similar levels of contrast, but still with a greater dynamic range. (I do the same with my Huawei)
      You can quibble about the colors, and I'll give the 808 that... I use a Huawei Mate 40 Pro to shoot stills for the website and I've shot back-ups with a Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, and Xiaomi's color and saturation are indeed lacking... but the level of detail you can get out of that sensor is absolutely incredible...
      And with the brand putting it in affordable smartphones like the 10T Pro and the Redmi Note 10 Pro, with GCam mods now being optimized for them, a lot of people are going to have some incredible hardware to go shooting with over the next few years for not very much money.

    That is utterly disappointing!! :/
    After nearly 9 years, the Mi 11 Ultra cannot beat Nokia 808 completely in spite of having a 1/1.12" size sensor and all kinds of other wizardry?
    I hope Adobe (Mark Levoy from Google, the machine learning expert for photo processing, joined Adobe) makes a camera app for a few dollars, which hopefully has the ULTIMATE state of the art camera algorithms, and then we won't ever have to deal with poor utilization of camera hardware like this.
    Such a waste of pure potential!
    I know I'm being a bit dramatic, but I expected so so much more from the Mi 11 Ultra in every aspect.
    And when is that AMAZING camera update coming to FIX EVERYTHING? 12.5.4? 12.5.6? 12.5.10?
    The Mi Note 10 had a lot better colors. So why is this a downgrade from that? The same xiaomi company and product line?

    Have you tried comparing with Pixel phones?

  • @farishanafiah8461
    @farishanafiah8461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Where can I start with this comparison?
    Firstly, I got to say that I am dead impressed with Xiaomi's HDR ON algorithm. It's about on par, or probably better, than the HDR ON algorithm in the ASUS Zenfone 8. But for Night Mode though, the ASUS is still my favourite. ASUS still managed to keep the detail sharp whereas there is some detail loss from the Xiaomi. But still, a good effort nevertheless.
    While I do really like Xiaomi's HDR ON photos a lot, the same couldn't be said with the Auto HDR daylight photos. There's too much dynamic range with almost no contrast in it and the colour is not that realistic. It's the same story when viewing the full res photos. So for Auto HDR daylight, it's a clear win for the Nokia. But for Auto HDR lowlight though, it's hard to pick which one did the best. Both phones give a neck-and-neck battle with the Nokia showing more realism while the Xiaomi has better noise control and shows sharper detail.
    For zoom, 5x zoom photos is a simple win for the Xiaomi. But that said, I'm really not that happy with the Xiaomi's 2x zoom performance. There is so much detail softness present in the photos. Even the Nokia can still give crisp detail despite the noise. This really does show that doing digital zooming under Quad Bayer pixel binning has never been any effective.
    TL;DR Xiaomi wins for HDR ON, 5x zoom, and Night Mode. Nokia wins for daylight colour and detail realism, 2x zoom, and Xenon flash. Both phones perform equally well in normal lowlight conditions albeit in downsized or full resolution mode.

    I've noticed the trend for modern phones to be overly blue and vibrant for absolutely no reason. Conversley, some are crushingly dull and overly warm. I think brands are too focused with computational photography opposed to raw, powerful image capture (I.e. night mode vs a decent xenon flash). Let's face it, LED flash sucks verus Xenon flash in speed and the accuracy without overly coloring the scene. This is embarrassing for any brand competing in the space. Add enhanced native zoom (I.e. periscope zoom), HDR, a WRGB sensor and night mode then Nokia would be 1st place as the leader in mobile phone camera performance. Such a shame a huge innovator is out of the game.

      It is not always an "over-sharpened mess", this is especially true during the day but nighttime is is clearly better than the 808. I would pick the Xiaomi b/c more versatile. 808 don't have ultra wide lens. So it's 5 - 0 points for MI 11 Ultra. Also video recording is 5-0 for MI 11 ultra. MI 11 ultra wins hands down if you don't cherry pick categories but consider overall package instead. Not even comparing Snapdragon S4 to 888. 808 it's basically dummy compact camera, definitively not a smartphone in today's standards. It was a good phone back then, I owned one as well. But it cannot really compete with today's phones camera, if you compare whole package, without cherry picking areas where 808 is strong. Back then HDR video was just a dream! Also 8K or 4K60 was scifi. :) On MI 11 Ultra you can have all of than on all cameras and much more. These comparisons are cool to watch but kind of pointless. :) Symbian is dead, let it rest in peace!

      @@alexshadagishvili7314 I owned 808 for 3 years, 1020 for 5. I love them. But as much as I love them, I can at least admit they belong to museum today. :) Most of the time you can easily get around "ugly" JPEG processing by using PRO mode on any phone. You loose HDR, but you get more natural JPEG processing which is closer to compact camera or 808/1020. Xiaomi phones can also remember last used camera mode, so it will always start camera in PRO mode, if that is what you want. :) Dont forget, one can also set sharpening on 808 to max and say that photos look ugly and unrealistic. You shouldn't use any camera on default settings. Honestly who uses DSLR on default settings in full AUTO mode? You always set best mode/settings for your subject, use case, style, etc... If you don't, you don't deserve to take good photos with any camera and you should buy Apple iPhone 12 PRO or Google Pixel or some other point and shoot.

      @@lukasdvorok6456 some DSLRs have magnificent auto/Jpeg mode, especially those dedicated to sports because most sports photographers - if not all, takes pictures in quick sequence and don't have time to manually process multiple RAW pictures (although, batch processing of RAW files would be an alternative, it would be still very, very, very time and resource consuming). Also, Nokia 808 didn't have "Pro mode" neither RAW output, so it is not an excuse for the over-processed pictures of some phones.

      The real winner is Nokia. Because there will be a lot of processed "worms" in the full-res on Xiaomi. The Nokia image will be clean. I am still using Nokia for my "Garhatrion" project and I have also tried many other smartphones. So I had plenty of opportunities to compare quality.

    Looks like a wasted potential of that Samsung's ISOCELL GN2 sensor... Good thing I didn't buy it, the camera in it isn't worth paying that much more (at least now, maybe after some updates it'll get better).

    • @farishanafiah8461
      @farishanafiah8461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At this point, I wonder what would happen if we have a native RGB version of the ISOCELL GN2 sensor coupled with Nokia's oversampling method. I'm pretty sure 2x zoom and 3x zoom photos would be great, if not excellent.

    • @farishanafiah8461
      @farishanafiah8461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Fifty Dinar Because everyone is now going for Quad/Nona Bayer pixel binning. No one wants to do a high megapixel native RGB sensor with oversampling technique anymore. To be brutally honest, I still don't find the demosaicing algorithm from any Quad/Nona Bayer sensors any effective to this day.

    The Mi 11 Ultra can take non-AI, less-processed JPEG shots when you use Pro-mode, not to mention its capability to shoot RAW DNG. Mi11 Ultra is certainly more versatile and far more capable than the Nokia 808 (I have a Nokia 808 and I can say, even Google Pixel 1's GCAM DNG matches the detail of that of Nokia, with far better HDR processing)

    When using the Xiaomi's raw photos, the Xiaomi would beat the 808 without problems. And even in auto mode, the low light performance is so much better than the 808, not to mention the over all better Picture taking experience on the Xiaomi. Some people really need to take off their nostalgia glasses. Even my midrange Xiaomi Mi Note 10 lite would beat the 808's old timer sensor, it is mighty impressive for its time, but it is ridiculous to believe that some people think its better. Also the dynamic range sucks on the 808

      You are living a delusional life. You have never used good old smartphone cameras. My lumia 1020 captures more details in most scene in 5mp compared to my iphone11. Only problem is dynamic range which can be moslty fixed if you shoot in Raw mode. Galaxy s7,s8,s9,s10,iphone11 and many other non flagship smartphones that I have, nothing can beat lumia 1020. Truth hurts but there is absolute no improvement when it comes to image quality from galaxy s7 to s10. That why I stopped buying smartphones.
