  • After receiving several questions regarding the financial and practical side of raising a family, in the wrangler and packer life, I wanted to answer those questions here. It's not a life that will bring one financial success. However, when approached in the right manner with the right focus and heart it is possible to turn it into a fulfilling life as well as a life that you can raise your family in.

Im thr young man he spoke of in this video about leaving my wife and kiddos to take a job. He told me not to do it and im glad i listened. This man ain't wrong, like I said he gave me advice via email and now I'm on a ranch with a two story house, beef and utilities paid for on top of my salary. I presented myself as he described in this video. As a pro who wants this life and I was given it.

Boy you do speak from the years of wisdom. I got you by 10+ years so I know. I have had one wife for 42 years and when I married her she became my best friend. She is my rock and My Son and Daughter are my Pride and joy. One of the best compliments I got was when my son and I were working the same job and The lead man asked my son which branch of service he served in and my son pointed at me and said His. I knew then that I had raised my son right!

These two 'memory verses' from a financial course I teach really align with your advice to anyone wanting to start in your business. Too many people think they live within their means when they aren't accruing debt, but fail to realize the need to plan for the future as well...vehicle repairs, medical costs, kids clothes, etc.
    - The wise man saves for the future but the foolish man spends whatever he gets. (Proverbs 21:20, TLB)
    - Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty. (Proverbs 21:5, TLB)

You know, the rambling your talking about isnt rambling. It's showing us wisdom, I've grown up listing and being around the old timers and I'm 27 now and still really trying to take it in. I havnt had much of a childhood with people my own age really so I feel like I connect to the older people more and have a decent look on what I want to be but to hear you talking and giving us the insight is helping me hone in on how I can get where I need to be. As a younger man I can really appreciate you giving us a good conversation. I'd really like to sit down and just have a one on one with you, but your videos bring it to me so I'm thankful for that. Keep on helping us grow man!

Not rambling; just good Ole sitting around the barn, life talk. Have crossed the 70 mark; but, as a youngster, couple times I left a outfit because I thought my task was beneath me. Those still haunt me. I didn't always recognize the discipline could not be turned off & on.
At 70, I would much stalls for week, at the Wrangler School, just too sit with cup coffee & now a cigar & listen to you with crew at end of the day ..

Dwayne , I really enjoyed the video it was awesome , so good that I watched it twice back to back. I believe in a debt free life style and try to do that at my best. You're so right in your thinking of the fact that kids don't need the best of everything. Kids today are spoiled , my kids are all grown up and have families of their own and they're learning what I taught them. Live within your means and abilities of what you know and are able to do. As I type this I'm listening to the video for the third time. It just makes so much sense. You're a very wise man and I'm looking forward to the next video.

This just inspired me to make the jump. I'm a Diesel Mechanic who hopped into a two year apprenticeship program for Heavy Equipment. I'm making the decision today, to pay off my debt and by the time I finish my apprenticeship jump into the Wrangling life. I love wrenching, but I'll say, this life has been my dream since my father rocked me to sleep to Waylon and Willie singing about their heroes being cowboys.

When you move on to wrangling, take your tools with you. There's a lot of equipment on farms and ranches and being able to turn your hand to those repairs will make you extra valuable to the owner. Machinist too, if you can pick that up without going into more debt. My son trained as a diesel mechanic in the Marines and the fact that he can make parts for old pumps is invaluable to his civilian employer. Best of luck in your future.

@@karladenton5034 Thank you! Yes, any additional tools on your toolbelt, like CDLs, and knowing how to fix and operate equipment is invaluable in the age of everyone wanting to move out west and be a wrangler. To my benefit, I am getting some more hands on experience with cattle, as my girlfriends father owns a decent plot of acreage, and absolutely puts me to work on it!
