I used to be a fan of playing fast scales & sequences, ultra technical arpeggios and a 'music fan' who only wants to listen to shred & tech-death-metal, but then i discovered this guy.. I'm amazed with the diversity and open-mindedness of this guy! Guthrie introduced me more to jazz & blues music, now i really enjoy listening to Wes Montgomery, Martino, Charlie Parker, Brecker, Derek Trucks, SRV, Buddy Guy, T.Emmanuel.. I'm embarrassed to say that i haven't heard much of those great stuff before

Well, I got tired of shred in the 80s, so I learned jazz, and then I remembered a particular type of jazz that I love the most: Beatnik Jazz. My goal was to come out with Modern Beatnik Jazz as an alternative to shred. I still like shred, but Beatnik Jazz is a nice, laid-back escape into another kind of cool-land. I was hoping to get a band together and just play my Beatnik Fusion, but Ifinding the time and the people who can follow it is tough. In addition to being a good player, it requires getting the right feel for it.
I totally agree. Being from the jazz world, being a big fan of Metheny, Montgomery and Scofield, I'm discovering Govan, and he CAN play jazz, haters should just go and try to play a 1/4 of this piece and show it on youtube. Guthrie Govan seems like he is a polyvalent guitar player, at his ease in every style. That's what makes him an unbelievable guitar player, and he just proves it on this video by playing a hard bebop piece and incorporating some country/rock licks besides classic sequences.

you know how guthrie says he would learn everything he heard in recordings on his guitar by ear....listen to the jaco pastorius version of Donna Lee. Guthrie starts his solo here the same way Jaco started his! it's always cool to find references like that in music :)

Good lord! I knew Guthrie was among the greats, but I had no idea he played bebop, or that he could blaze through it like a house on fire. There's no end to his prodigious talents! Back in the day I played this tune loads of times, and never got close to this! As a bonus he's even a likable, fun guy. Gee, I wonder if he plays flamenco, too. ;)
It's because he worked as a professional transcriber for so many years before he became a professional guitarist and all that information transferred down to his playing
i like how during the second run through he played the solo as if it were back home in indiana (same changes to donna lee) just with different swing and twang. amazing versatility
I have a mad respect for him because he's a self-taught and he's doing such a variety of styles. He didn't go to MI/GIT, Berklee, etc. he went to Oxford instead :))

He dropped out of Oxford, he was studying English Literature and ended up working in McDonald's... Which is absolutely crazy but I don't think that anyone would want it any other way :)
Ryan Bailey "self-taught" is a broad term... Those who desire to learn any discipline ( e.g. Guitar/ Painting/ Photography/sport, you pick one ...) put in the time on the "instrument" and in the books...we are all just sharing from a common pool of knowledge from those who have gone before; hoping to put a bit of personal spice or flare, something instantly recognizable as "You". And Guthrie, I believe learnt his kindergarten lessons on sharing better than most of this worlds egotistical shred posers will ever understand, When it come to guitar NO ONE is "a guitar god" some are just far more diligent in the pursuit of personal excellence than others, and for this Guthrie is indeed a Player worthy of much distinction and accolade; His public displays of humility make me believe he too would say there is NO "ONE best" guitarist...knowing the truth is there are a very many great ones from whom there is much to learn as they share, but it is only for those who have learned to listen not only to the notes but the narrative as well.....

Cont: His sense of melody, however, is so, so good. Definitely way ahead of most jazz guys. You can hear all throughout the solo that he's playing Donna Lee, no question.
I love how at the end you can just hear him starting a sentence with "So it's just...". This guy is amazing and so nice and modest about it :)

A pride of mine, is to have discovered Guthrie when he was still such a nobody that he bowed at me for telling him how much I love him in 2008. Back then he told me "music doesn't pay, look at my t-shirt" lol. Hope he's got some money now with the fame.

Killed it! Really nice and the 'pedal steel' bends were awesome, never heard those with Donna Lee before.
He's such a humble and friendly guy, this is one of the things I like most about this gifted and incredible guitarist. Off course I like a lot the way he touches the axe. In example did you, guys and girls, see him on the Vigier fretless? No words for it, only dropping jaw and a continous smile on my face. Great guy, great musician, devastating guitarist, one of the best and most versatile I've ever seen in my life (and I'm 53...). Hats off.
my God, the guy just continues to amaze and evolve. every time you think he has reached THE pinnacle he just raises the bar, this may not be everyones favorite thing to listen to but that was an extremely difficult piece of music to play. Damn Guth, unreal :)

Allan Holdsworth is amazing, of course. I'm sure there are hundreds of dozens of guitar players among which not one can be considered the best, but I've been listening to top level guitar players for 20 years and, before Guthrie, I though I had seen it all.

Oh, and I know defining someone as "the best" in music is impossible. I just can't find a different way to define how much I enjoy this guy's playing. I'm sure there's a 5 year old somewhere that will run circles around him some 20 years from now.
art isnt something that can be compared, there is no "best" per say. Would you compare painting or sculpture the same way?

That's the easy answer.Guitar playing is art, but not only art. It takes skill, and therefore, it can also be partly seen as sport, due to the fact that one gets better over time, as he practices.
During the practice years, a guitar player will find out the things that are more difficult for him to play, and gets a grasp of how long it would take for him to master a certain technique or a mental skill... and then you see a guy who can do everything you can do and more, so you are right to say "he is better than me".
Again: Guitar playing is music, so it's art, but it's also "sport", and there's nothing wrong with that.
we have really different views on this subject then. I guess shredding is kind of a sport though, I get that.
I think the end goal of a guitarist is not to have the best technique ever, it is to compose music. And imo, Govan isnt even close to the "best" when speaking of composition. Then thats definitely a matter of taste.

he's just an incredible musician, philosopher, songwriter, visionary....it is rare that the world is blessed with such an inspirational talent such as Guthrie...it's just amazing to see him do what he does, so naturally, so effortlessly...it's almost hard to imagine that there was a time that he was unable to do this, and was just beginning to play the guitar, but i would imagine that there was something different even in his "learning" stages of the guitar and music. Wish there was some footage

It looks/feels like his playing comes as naturally to him as having a conversation.
I think in one interview he said that practicing to the point where you can play while having a conversation or watching The Simpsons is more important than practicing speed.
He is just a medium, like a string puppet. A lot of people doing incredible stuff are like this. Maybe he does not even know and believe that the skills are his. Sound insane? Humanity has been hijacked. NJ.

I think it's called having fun. I've seen Guthrie live with The Aristocrats and they have a blast on stage while playing incredibly "serious" music. We in the audience were alternately freaking out and cracking up. Kind of like Frank Zappa and/or ZPZ. I love it!
He's not just attempting jazz. He's doing it better than everyone else. And To be honest, Guthrie is everything, and nothing. He can be anything he wants.
Actually he's not trying to play a real jazz here, he's just having fun. He mixed it up with country and rock licks.
***** I was at Guthrie masterclass in Indonesia, and i asked him about this video and Guthrie admit it himself that he was just "messing around" with the solos (1:32 and 1:50 onwards), I've seen him improvise over Herbie Hancock's tune and he's much 'scarier' than this.
I don't know why the term "real jazz" irks me so much. It just does. A jazz musician should be able to interpret jazz tunes in whatever way they see fit. If they didn't. then they would cease to be an "artist".

It completely changes the way you play. If you want to play jazz and have the sound and tone of a real jazz musician you really have to use a hollowbody. And bends really aren't considered proper in the world of jazz guitar but you can bend on a hollowbody
A PROPER JAZZ GUITAR, there's no such thing. Simply, when GIBSON presented the Hollow, Carved, Archtop guitar to the world, IT soon replaced the BANJO in many bands, the banjo having much greater volume ability over flat top / flat back guitars. Having the archtop and back increased the acoustic guitar's VOLUME potential over flat top / flat back guitars, to meet that of the banjo. Subsequently electric amplification pickups were added to the Hollow, Carved, Archtop guitar for even greater volume, bringing unwanted "feed back" with them. Les Paul wanting to fight off this "feed back" problem, affixed an electric amplification pickup into his invention, the ELECTRIC, SOLID BODY GUITAR, with OUTSTANDING Success. The Fender Telecaster was presented to the world as the first mass produced S/B Electric, "Spanish Style" guitar in 1951; "players quickly realized that Fender had given them something... well-designed, easy-playing, efficient, rugged, affordable and, above all, great-sounding." [ credit the last 21 words beginning with "players quickly realized..." to: www.fender.com/articles/gear/the-one-that-started-it-all-a-telecaster-history ] TELECASTER the word, came from "television" a new medium, and "broadcast". The guitar was very plain Jane in appearance though. @ Cummings, No, you don't have to use a 'hollowbody'. Not even close. Guys like Ed Bickert didn't 'discover' that Telecasters had 'good Jazz tone'. They just didn't get sucked into the bullshit paradigms that influence kids like you, did their own thing and demonstrated that 'tone' is one of the most overrated and stupid things in guitar music.
@BigFiveJack Yes a good musician can play jazz on any guitar and in fact, when it comes to fusion music, solid body guitars have been the preference of many guitarists for years (they are more versatile for effects as well as both clean and distortion tones). But when it comes to straight ahead jazz, the thickness of a good archtop is undeniably more suitable and the reason why the VAST majority of guitarists, when they play straight ahead jazz, do so on an archtop. It has nothing to do with feedback, otherwise there would be no reason for george benson to tape his f holes playing an archtop in stadiums when he could just grab a solid body.

Sorry but no, he was in the right key, and a player of that caliber don't mess an improvisation by 1 fret. Distraction has nothing to do with ear, obviously he can miss 1 note (not in this improv tho) but not miss all the improvisation by 1 fret, that only occurs on people absolute begginer that have no ear at all

He started of right but then when he turned his head, the notes were wrong and it seems he was just 1 fret too low. Yes, he most certainly DID mess it up. Maybe you are not a musician?

he actually plays everything REALLY well with unrivaled facility, acumen, and authenticity...i doubt guthrie sought out to write classic rock and roll anthems that middle aged parents and their kids can get with...he is a guitar player's guitar player...and i think the most profound aspect of his talent is that he is able to put a variety of genres into contexts that are easily accessible to guitar players...he can also write a hot instrumental...we already have one John Mayer

i would love to hear the reasoning behind why people dislike videos like these. i dont care how mundane or ridiculous the reason, i am so curious.
Is because his improvisation lacks of musicality. Maybe he has a lot of technique, harmonic knowledge and speed, bur there is no a good phrasing in his solo, there are moments where you just hear like excercices, scales played very fast up and down, there is not much motif, its just a non jazzistic vocabulary.

totally disagree if you listen to his albums especially West coast grooves they're very musical. I've not heard any other guitarist that can turn his hand to any musical style and play like he's been playing that music all his life. the man's a genius!

It relies in a simple fact: subject incomprehension (or lack of feeling for it). You 've got an example of it, for instance, in Daniel Beta comment (no offense).
I'm not sure, but he rushes the 8ths notes at the start of the solo and from then I feel like he needs to leave some space and come in again. But apart from that all the notes he played were super nice, I find the first super fast run didn't really work that well.

The best bit of Guthrie’s playing is the humility.
There's no doubt that Mr. Govan can be any kind of musician he wants!... It's so clear he knows well what's doing.... Next live I'll try to get better hands and better connected to my brain.

Do your homework Miles Davis is infamous for stealing tunes by his members to get royalty money. Charlie Parker wrote Donna Lee, Bill Evans wrote Blue in green.
Miles NEVER composed this tune and at the time this tune appeared, Miles couldn't even play over this tune well... AT ALL. However, Miles said he wrote it, because Miles did shit like that. Nothing about this tune is Miles.... AND Miles couldn't even play the head on trumpet anyhow. Every historian known Miles never did, nor could write this tune. It was 100% Parker's vocab. (I'm a University Jazz professor btw who spent 17yrs teaching in the World's Best Jazz performance school).

Why? What if he's a drummer who has been playing with amazing guitar players... to have an opinion on a player you do not need to be better than him or even as good. Guthrie is probably the best player in history, but we can still prefer other people's versions of some songs he plays.

I know I shouldn’t trouble myself about such things, especially given the (so far) 9.2K upvotes, but I can’t help wondering who would give a thumbs down to this delightful performance. People who don’t like jazz? People who don’t like long-haired guitarists? People who are jealous? People who are sad, bitter, and lonely? You know, it occurs to me that they don’t show the number of downvotes for comments-why show them for the videos? I mean, really, who cares? It’s nice to have the upvotes-a sign that a performance is making people happy. But who needs to know how many don’t like it? (The people who really feel a need to express their dislike can always leave a comment-and if they can’t be bothered to do that, then f-k ‘em, I say.)

The great thing about those guy is that their sound is so personal that can't be replicated. Same thing with Guthrie.

Coming from I blues cat, I absolutely love Guthrie... whenever he I see him play there's this since of adventure in his playing. Like a few times in this video he missed like one or two notes, but somehow it's okay cause immediately after that he locked in the lick and kicked some ass

Just landed here after listening to Matteo Mancuso playing Donna Lee. Interesting comparison, Guthrie perhaps the final virtuosic zenith of old school, Matteo the shining new next generation step forward
OMG. I first heard this guy from GT magazine when I was just starting to play like 15 years ago. He just gets better and better every year. It's doubtful there's anybody better than him as an overall player.

In his book he has mentioned that one of his prized possession was Charlie Parker's Omni book . So i don't know what jazzers think about him but he surely has studied jazz you cant deny that
