    We learned the hard way that feeder fish, and especially crawfish also carry parasites that are then passed on to the snake. Our water snake Chu'a had serious fluke infection and a subsequent bacterial infection. We just assumed whatever those fish might have had, his body would kill off. Sadly its not the case. He got really sick, but we found a good vet who showed us how to give injections and then by mouth meds. Its good to now know about the thiamine, thanks!

      Tara Bonee We just got a few garter snakes and I was concerned about the parasites with live fish. Is there a way to get rid of the parasites while still in the fish?

    I also had this problem with a garter snake. I did know about thiamin and learned what kind of fish I should and should not feed but ended up with the problem anyway. What I believe happened was the fish I bought was miscatagorized on the list I found or, more likely, mislabeled at my local fish monger. I believe the mistake was made at the fish shop because I read many reports of garter keepers saying this was the fish they feed their snakes without issue.
    Unfortunately, when my snake began convulsing it came out of it with several kinks! They never went away but it doesn't seem to affect it's quality of life. Boris continues to eat, poop, shed, and move as usual and doesn't seem bothered or hurt if the kinks are touched.
    I did the same thing, broke the pill into smaller pieces and stuffed them in the new fish and voila!
    One thing I recommend to fish-eating snake owners is to find out exactly what the fish you want to feed is supposed to look like. Ask your fish monger to show you the head or scales of the fish you're buying so you can identify it :)
    I wonder if there is a reptile chiropractor and if they could pop those kinks back into place??

    • @TapperPlushMom
      @TapperPlushMom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That should totally be a thing, lol. I know you made this comment a while ago and you were probably half-kidding. I'm going to have that be a profession in my book series: dragon chiropractor. (Not all my dragons have reptile characteristics, but at least two types of them do and maybe more like three (out of four or five).)

      "So, ma'am, how did you dislocate your wing base joint?"
      "Well, I flew pretty hurriedly because I had to collect the kids from school and suddenly this punk swept in front of me although I had the right of way. I tried a hasty evation manouver and there it happened. A crack, horrible pain, and I had trouble moving the wing.
      Nearly plummeted to the ground!"
      "That sounds bad. But thankfully you are fine and we can surely fix your wing.
      Now I need you to lie down on this stone platform here..."

    Hi! I just found your channel and really enjoy watching your videos. I have a question about the vitamin b, and was wondering if you could give some insight. Since B12 is water soluble, I’m curious if perhaps soaking the snake in a water solution with the B12 (or maybe even pedialite, I think it contains B12) might be an effective method of treatment. What are your thoughts? This would be for snakes that aren’t so eager to eat after the seizure

    • @battlebear437

      @battlebear437 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you can, order frozen and then do the frozen/thawed. In a way, I don’t blame your mom - from my own experience, mice breed very quickly and they stink (like rodents)...and I mean hoooo boy, the babies smell! Also, even if it dint disturb the female mouse, she can eat her babies (supposedly due to being disturbed, but I had one who ate the whole litter and she’d been left alone other than feeding, etc). You could try earthworms. Night crawlers can be used, too, only cut them into quarters as they’re more muscular and can crawl back out of your snake (according to the website I checked).

    What types of fish are the best to feed them? And what kinds of insects or bugs are good?

      There's a link in the description to a website that lists all the fish with and without thiaminase :)

      Garters are carnivores, not insectivores. The information I got from Gartersnake.info says no crickets, mealworms or other insect larvae.

    Random snake tip: If you ever find a water snake in the wild and decide to hold it for a while before RELEASING it, make sure it has no lumps inside of them. That is food, and they WILL puke on you. Yes, I have experienced it, and yes, it was in my lap.

    Would it be a good idea to crush up the vitamin B pills and sprinkle it onto their food, or into the water? Similar to calcium powder for turtles?

    • @battlebear437
      @battlebear437 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vitamin b is very strong tasting, so probably not. I think it’s like giving medicine to a cat or dog - sometimes you have to hide it in food for them to take it or make sure they’re actually getting it
