I want to thank you for reminding me that when you don’t feel your best, if you look and act the way you want your best to be it will make you feel better. I turned 68 this year and my body has completely changed over the last 10 years. It feels out of my control. I still work full time and with COVID the “dress code” at work has become much more relaxed. I have gone down that path with everyone else and become a “shlump”. It’s time to step up my game and dress this strange body to look it’s best. It has to help! Thanks for the reminder.
Gorgeous dress and they all look wonderful on you! I loved this video thank you. Just as a counter-view to come one else’s comment below, I *love* all the chat. So often I really identify with things you say and I enjoy hearing your thoughts on various topics. I often pick up on a real gem of an idea or learning tip from comments you make.
Love the dresses! I especially love the prints. I don’t wear prints much and maybe I need to change that. I also appreciate the honesty about how you feel about your body right now. It has taken me a lifetime to learn to accept my body the way it is. And I still struggle some days. I do believe getting “dressed” everyday helps. It’s a good habit to cultivate. This was a great video, Whitney. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It's funny that I don't wear a lot of prints in my separates (other than stripes), but I just LOVE a good print in a dress or jumpsuit!
I have been trying for over a year to get the resolution pattern fitted to my daughter. I gave up and moved to the Duets. That one I managed to get fitted with far less grief. I will return to the Resolution pattern after I make her some tops that she’s requested. Hi btw! Been awhile since I’ve watched because I have been trying to sew those dang pants. ;)
Pants fitting can be so frustrating! I haven't made the legging version on the Resolutions, but I did notice there is a bit of a dropped crotch on the joggers, which I actually appreciate on a jogger, maybe not on a legging, though!
Oh my goodness! Whitney, I love these sooooo much! ❤️ I’m in the “what happened to my body” bucket, only I’m probably at least 20 years older, lol. And yes, I really do know what happened, lol, I just don’t like it. All these dresses are what I could sew myself, would flatter my shape, be modest and still feel comfy and stylish. Yes please, do a tutorial on how to gather on serger. Take care, God bless you and your family and have a wonderful weekend!
Hi Aimie, I am so right there with you. Who is that ‘mature, antique blond” in my mirror? What happened? We do have an advantage though, we can sew and make alterations to suit our needs. 😉
I also live in the Indianapolis area and just discovered this channel. I love select sewing services, I bought my Babylock serger there and I can’t agree more about their customer service!
The knit dresses look stunning on you. They turned out beautifully. I have 10 drawstring bags to make to sale before I can finish the pants and dress I have going. Then I have several things I want to sew real soon.
Love all the dresses and they all look so good on you. Sorry your going through things with your body. Don’t beat yourself up though because what I see in the pictures you still look great in everything. I can’t wait to see how you sew the dress. I so want to make a dress. Sewing is little slow down here in Florida mainly due to poor lighting in all the rooms. I can see why women back in the day gave up sewing due to poor vision. Plan on having a ott lamp next time we come. I’m still enjoying what sewing I am able to get done.
So sweet to name your mannequin after such an influential person in your life. Love the dresses 👗 👗 👗 👗 👗 You are so right that when you do not feel good, dress up a bit and you will feel better.
Of your 5 dresses, the blue and green is the most flattering on you. It has a great midrif fit point that looks great, minimizes the bust and flows over waist and hips. Flattering on your body type.
Sorry you’re having trouble with the weight, My daughter and I struggle with the same. She drug out a cook book “Practical Paleo “ the other day. Wonderful recipes. Wonderful book, worth the look.
What a fantastic collection of knit dresses, Whitney! Your hacked Love Notions Rhapsody dress took me back to the early 90’s when I was teaching. I lived in the knit dresses from Eddie Bauer; the cotton/Lycra fabric was absolutely wonderful quality and they offered several different patterns, solids, and skirt styles. So, I’m sure you understand why I was very excited to hear you’re going to cover the basics of hacking my favorite top pattern into this “I will wear it forever and a day” dress! I can see why you’ve been living in these dresses….who wouldn’t?
I love these videos you do of the patters and places where you get your fabrics. I often use the links to see if the fabric companies have the same fabric in my colors (I’m a Moonlit Summer). I have a huge ask… when watching I’ll make a list of the patterns I want to check out. If you could mention the name of the pattern after you describe it (and before going on to the next pattern) that would be great! After hearing your description and seeing the pictures if I think it might work for me, I can’t remember what the name of the pattern is. (I have the memory of a sieve). Love, love, love your channel! Thank you for all you’re doing!
I can definitely do that! Also, I have all the patterns and fabrics listed in the description box if that's helpful. It's right below the title of the video. There are a couple lines of text and then to the right it either says "Show More" or there is an arrow. If you click on that all the information drops down!
Your dresses are fabulous and look great on you. We are very similar sizes, although my waist is a bit larger, being an older lady and I'm a bit taller. So, I'm going to be guided by your style choices. Thanks for the video.
❤️❤️❤️ all the dresses you’ve made Whitney! I’m not sure which is my favorite. Glad your BL is up and running again. It pays to purchase from a reputable dealer.
I love all of these dresses! They look fantastic on you and I am totally going to make some of these as I’ve been wanting to make some knit dresses for fall/winter. I feel like sewing can really do a number on body confidence since we’re always measuring, and seeing those numbers CONSTANTLY in our face is hard at times. Also spending so much time in the making and money on the fabric just to have the piece not fit can feel terrible. I appreciate your honesty in talking about these things.
So glad I found your channel and subscribed. Just getting into garment sewing and learned 3 new pattern shops from you and purchased 4 of these patterns. Love your fabric choices and commentary of sewing for a real body that has changed (you look adorable btw!). Being several years out from menopause I wonder at least weekly, “how did this happen 😩?!?” As an aside, I get a kick out of the Mac lipstick colors 😊.
I haven't worn a dress in sooooo long :( I have new patterns, fabric, some time occasionally - but I'm intimidated by thinking I'll need to WEAR that dress, so don't even try. Maybe that will be my New Year's resolution - to actually make the dresses! Then, next year's resolution will be to wear the dresses (LOL)!! Thanks for the video, Whitney. I love to spend some time with you, especially on Friday mornings! Have a great weekend.
I add pockets in almost any dress! lol but I don’t use knit for the pocket inside… just in the knit dress. Love how you made long lines for the first dress. Looks great on you! Also- maybe Lena needs a top you make to keep on her that’s your size and shape so she demonstrates your lovely creations better.
Hi Whitney, I’m trying to fix on the best knitting pattern to utilise a lovely piece of fabric I have in my stash - but it’s (I think!) a soft viscose 4way stretch jersey which drapes amazingly but equally wouldn’t work for a pattern needing a bit of structure. I have been looking at Tallinn but am concerned that without a waist seam to support it, the material may over stretch - BUT it looks like your Tallin that you are wearing on this video is equally fine jersey. What do you think?.. PS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS - never miss any and you are my go-to!
I agree that a viscose jersey doesn't work well with a pattern needing a bit of structure. I didn't make the Tallinn in this video, but I did make the Antrim (and used a lovely viscose jersey) for this video. The Tallinn would be fabulous in a lightweight Ponte or a cotton/spandex jersey. I, too, would worry that the lack of waist seam would make it grow. I did make the Wanderlust in this video, which also doesn't have a waist seam and I find it's best in those fabrics with more structure as well!
I really like the dresses with the lower necklines on you. Very flattering on you. Thanks for the great video. So interesting. I get a lot of painful bloating and I’m very reactive to fructose which is a shame because I love fruit and also have problems with many vegetables as they create gas.
@@TomKatStitchery I’m so excited! I’m hoping to find some stretch lace to match, maybe for the sleeves or the midriff. Ooh…I think I saw some red & black lace on a Farmhouse Fabrics Gab N Gush!
Great video, as usual. Whitney, you’re so upbeat and cheerful you brightened up a very dismal day in the east of England today. Thanks and love all the dresses.😻CynthiaB
Love my Evolution! Customer service is soooo important!! Love that Boden dress. Can't wait to see your video soon. The Olympia dress I too had for a long time before I made it & love mine.
You should use the solid purple jersey to make something like the kwik sew 3916 view A. It would look fab over all your jersey dresses to add a layer of unfussy warmth. Provides your outfit with pockets if you didn't add them to the dress due to bulk. Plus it would be great over your elastic back pants and t-shirts. Lends a nice vertical visual line adding a slimming effect. Win win win 😃
I LOVE your dresses!!! Can you recommend a good online store to buy knit fabric that is 95%polyester and 5% spandex? I need it to sew a dress with . Thank you Sew much!🤗💗🧵🪡
Whitney, this was such a wonderful video. All you dresses and fabrics used were perfect and so lovely. Yes, yes, yes, on how you made the Rhapsody into a dress. I have the pattern so I’m very interested. Btw, I don’t know if you can answer the question but here goes, my body shape is totally opposite of you I am a triangle, not inverted like you. Would these dress work for someone with a smaller bust
I think they would definitely work with a smaller bust! In fact, I often find these types of dresses more flattering on a smaller bust. Sometimes my larger bust can make things stand far away from my body and make me look larger than I am.
Great dresses!! Do you ever have a problem with your knit fabric getting stuck in the hole that the bobbin thread comes up through?? When I sew knits this seems to happen a lot… it’s like the fabric is too flexible and goes down the hole w the needle? I am using a knit needle? If you already have a video that addresses this I’d like to watch. Thank you so much for your videos, ideas, smiles and great sewing tips!!
I don't have this issue, but I also have a single hole throat plate on my machine so fabric very rarely gets sucked into the machine. Usually, if you have a wider opening throat plate (which is necessary for a zig zag stitch) fabric, especially knits, can easily be sucked into the machine. If you hold the top and bottom thread right as you start and give it a slight tug as you start the seam, it will keep the fabric from getting sucked in!
Hi Whitney! I watch your videos All the time (catching up on old ones). I love your style! We have a lot in common, I admire your sewing skills and learn a lot from you. Sewing also helps me keep my sanity in a very real way, I have to have my sewing time! I also just had my colors done by color guru and I love it!! I am also having my daughters done for a Christmas gift. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge with everyone and God Bless you!
Love these Whitney! I am a totally different shape to you so I started on a cocoon knit dress but I really want to try this type of style. And yes, the Boden dress is FABULOUS!
Whitney, I love this video! I have all of these patterns, with the exception of the Itch to Stitch, Tallinn dress (a must buy/make). I love all the patterns and have made dresses from each except for the Rhapsody. I can't wait to see your video on how you made yours, including the gathering per your Serger. You're the best girl! I always look forward to your videos.
Hi Whitney Thanks for the video. I want to make a tunic length version of the tiered dress and don’t understand how the bottom (of the two tiers I plan) will be gathered if both tiers are width of fabric. Maybe I should just make top tier less wide.?
That's a good point that I forgot to address. While I start with the full width, I often don't get it all gathered into the "flat piece". Because I like to gather with my serger I prefer to have to cut off the excess instead of not having enough. That being said, I often have to piece together a couple widths of fabric for the bottom tiers of gathered dresses.
@@TomKatStitchery Thank you. I am going to just try and figure this out for my tall, thin, lovely and pregnant daughter who is in the early stages of showing so she wants tunics that cover her crotch as leggings are the most comfortable bottoms now.
Hi Whitney, I really appreciate your videos, and was wondering if you could show us how you use binding on your knit tops hem and sleeve hems. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these dresses.
Are you meaning the double sided tape I use for my knit sleeve hems and garment hems? I don't typically use bindings for those hems, but I do use a fusible tape that really helps. I can definitely show how I do that!
@@TomKatStitchery I’m not really sure I know that in one of your videos you mentioned that you use binding on the hem and sleeves of your knit tops and that they hang better maybe? Not sure exactly but any help given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Whitney
@@kacoa532 on some of my knit tops with shirttail hems or curved hems, I use a strip of knit fabric kind of like a bias binding. Is this what you might be talking about? I can definitely show that!
I omit pockets in most of my me made dresses for that reason. It looks bulky and you can't put anything in them or it weighs it down. I even omit them from my joggers most of the time. Its so nice to see someone else not be a fan when everyone else is still like "It has pockets!".
Once again, another fabulous video! What do you think about adding a very lightweight knit interfacing to the facing of the Olympia dress? Or don't you think it needs it? BTW, I went out and bought knee high suede boots after your Rhapsody knit dress video. I'm working on a Sinclair Patterns Yasmin knit dress to go with them. I hope to finish it for Thanksgiving. I cannot thank you enough for all you contribute to the sewing community 🙏.
I"m so glad you're enjoying it! As far as the Olympia, you might be able to interface a section of it, but it does need to stretch to fit the back neckline, which helps the back neck to keep from sagging.
@@deniseroot7105 really?!!!! That’s so funny! My family has lived in Sedalia for many generations. My parents recently moved to the KC area to be closer to my sister so no family members are there now, but I’m a 3rd generation graduate of Smith Cotton High School!
Hi Whitney, I hope you don’t mind me asking this question (please feel free to ignore if you do). I just don’t understand your pattern sizing for the Pattern Emporium dresses. The high bust and bust measurements on these patterns for a size 10 appear to be 2 or 3 sizes smaller than what you would normally go for. I am a 39” bust and that puts me in a size 14 in most of their patterns and I don’t need a full bust adjustment. Please would you mind explaining your rationale behind the size choice. I personally wouldn’t drop down 2 or 3 sizes in a knit dress as I’d not want it so close fitting. It would really help to know how you worked out your size in PE patterns. Thank you.
I don't mind answer this question at all! First, I misspoke and I actually made a size 12, not a 10 (I'll rectify that in the description box and say something on the channel). I picked the size based on my upper bust which is 36" (this is in the size 12 upper bust range). I then did a knit/dartless FBA for it to fit my 40" full bust. I'm somewhat petite in my shoulder area so I always pick my size based on my upper bust measurement and then make the adjustments to fit my full bust (usually an FBA). Does that help?
I also love a good pocket but also get annoyed by the knit pocket stretch. Haven’t tried using a woven fabric for the pocket-would that work? Or would it stick to the knit fabric?
I've recently made one (it will be on the channel on Friday) from a vintage Stretch and Sew pattern. However, I think a Love Notions Luna Loungewear nightgown/dress would be perfect made up in some knit tricot fabric!
Concerning the choice of colors: as Whitney used a lighter backdrop print, I surprised myself, just like Whitney did. I discovered that as long as there are TWO colors thereon the print, I might not stress too much about choosing the lighter backdrop WITH ONE EXCEPTION: For instance, my personal colors require an eggshell or cream backdrop. If on the other hand I choose a white backdrop, it makes the garment look really good but that wrong choice of white makes the impression of 'cheap Lucy'. I wish I could wear beautiful, clean looking white but NOPE! I need the soft, warm 'off' white. So the lighter backdrop can work well--the all over impression is what you'll like best, and too, you'll feel good wearing it as well. ~ L
I think that's exactly what seems just a bit off on that fabric on my body. It's just a little too clean and crisp for my coloring. I love the dress and will continue to wear it, but definitely something to consider when fabric shopping!
I have a half-scale mannequin that I had when I was in school who is named Peg...(so I said to my one legged wife, Peg...). My full size mannequin is named...Big Peg!
Keto helped me and vegan with no sugar or gluten saved my daughter. But it’s boring. That peri menopause era (depending - could be 35 to 55?) is murder on the waist. Love all your knit dresses. I’m inspired.
It's a loose fitting bodice, so it was probably pulling away a bit. The pattern is actually meant for woven fabrics. It could have definitely been a camera angle. Sorry about that!
I tune in for Whitney’s personality as well as her sewing makes so I love her talking but I get where you are coming from. I can’t always stick with the chatter on some of the other sewing channels so I will either speed up the play time or skip to the sewing reveals. It especially annoys me when people make a ritual of pausing to drink something at regular intervals - I mean, really….why not cut that part out? I didn’t tune in to watch you enjoy a cup of tea (& I love my tea). I think that is very odd but, hey, it’s their channel so I just move on.
Less talking? What a rude comment. Watch an instruction-only video if you want less chatter. Whitney does an outstanding job with her videos. Geez, some people will complain about anything….

Lends a nice vertical visual line adding a slimming effect. Win win win 😃
Ooh! I'll have a look at that pattern!
Beautiful dresses. They look so good on you.
Thank you so much!
I love your video days. They start my day off so nicely! I get so inspired and pumped! Thank you!
What a great comment to read! Thank you!
Clearly have some catching up to do. That last dress that you wore in the intro to the intro really makes your eyes sparkle 💖
Thank you! Thats the Boden dress I recreated. I've got a video going up this weekend showing how I hacked the Love Notions Rhapsody to make it!
Hey Lena! Yea for named Manequins love your dresses
❤️❤️❤️
I LOVE your dresses!!! Can you recommend a good online store to buy knit fabric that is 95%polyester and 5% spandex? I need it to sew a dress with . Thank you Sew much!🤗💗🧵🪡
I've heard good things about Olga's Closet, Mily Mae Fabrics and Girl Charlee.
@@TomKatStitchery Thank you!!! I will check them out.
Nice video and makes. Have you stopped using the big four patterns? You haven't shown any makes from them lately.
Thank you! I"m still using the Big 4, but have just been on an independent kick lately. However, I do have a big 4 pattern coming on Friday this week!
I love your Friday videos! Tips from a sewing friend! Thanks!
I'm so glad!
Great vlog Whitney and well explained. Lovely frocks. Look forward to your next upload.
Oh good!
The rhapsody hack dress is stunning on you.
Thank you!
Hi Whitney! I watch your videos All the time (catching up on old ones). I love your style! We have a lot in common, I admire your sewing skills and learn a lot from you. Sewing also helps me
keep my sanity in a very real way, I have to have my sewing time! I also just had my colors done by color guru and I love it!! I am also having my daughters done for a Christmas gift. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge with everyone and God Bless you!
I'm so glad to hear this!
Love these Whitney! I am a totally different shape to you so I started on a cocoon knit dress but I really want to try this type of style. And yes, the Boden dress is FABULOUS!
Thank you so much!
I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel! The Rhapsody hack will be up this coming Sunday!
I might have to do the rhapsody dress in a knit! Such a good idea!
I now have two and I love them both!
Beautiful makes!
Thank you so much!
It's true! I love a good anchored pocket in my woven dresses, but not my knit ones. They just seem to be in the way!
I just bought the Wanderlust pattern and I’m wondering if you have a video how to do a FBA on it?
I don't, but I did just follow the instructions in the pattern for how to do it. It was a new method for me and it turned out really well!
@@TomKatStitchery Ok thank you I’ll check into it.
Thank you, love the dresses.
I'm so glad!
I told you that I was another Missouri girl. I recognized the last name! We had that name in Cole Camp too.
You're Cole Camp?!! My family is all from Sedalia!
@@TomKatStitchery that is where I am!
@@deniseroot7105 really?!!!! That’s so funny! My family has lived in Sedalia for many generations. My parents recently moved to the KC area to be closer to my sister so no family members are there now, but I’m a 3rd generation graduate of Smith Cotton High School!
@@TomKatStitchery that is so cool#
That's an interesting idea! That might be worth a try!
You mentioned making a slip to go under your knit dresses. Is there a pattern for a slip that you can recommend? Thanks.
I've recently made one (it will be on the channel on Friday) from a vintage Stretch and Sew pattern. However, I think a Love Notions Luna Loungewear nightgown/dress would be perfect made up in some knit tricot fabric!
thanks!
Love them all!
Thank you!
Wonderful content!
I"m so glad you enjoyed it!
😂 I love it!
😀
❤️❤️❤️
Keto helped me and vegan with no sugar or gluten saved my daughter. But it’s boring. That peri menopause era (depending - could be 35 to 55?) is murder on the waist. Love all your knit dresses. I’m inspired.
Thank you so much!
“Shirred” rhymes with “purred.”
Did I say it wrong 😂. I have to remind myself every time I say that word.
Dress number 5 has a very low neckline. Too much skin showing when you were wearing it while sitting.
It's a loose fitting bodice, so it was probably pulling away a bit. The pattern is actually meant for woven fabrics. It could have definitely been a camera angle. Sorry about that!
Love your videos but please less talking
Love all your dresses. I can't remember the last time I wore fall/winter dress but you just made me need one! BTW - love your chatty videos!
Personally I enjoy the chit chat.
I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! Sorry about the talking. I"m chatty 😂😉.
