Storyline:
After being robbed in the desert, Adam stumbles onto a seemingly chivalrous prospector named Peter Kane, who offers him a mule and supplies for three days work. However, Kane is a demented madman who is interested in psychological torture, hoping to drive a seemingly rational man like Adam to murder. As Ben, Hoss and Little Joe try to retrace the missing Adam's footsteps, Adam must rely on his own wits to defeat Kane.

"This was a memorable episode as it is not typical in any way. I am guessing here but I think they let Pernell Roberts have input on the script, or they wrote him into this exclusively to somehow appease him to last through his contract. A Bonanza fan site says "This episode was one of Pernell Roberts' personal favorites, as it gave him the best opportunity to showcase his acting abilities." (Bonanza Wiki). I was curious how far in to Roberts' Bonanza run this episode was, it was released in 1962 so he still had two more seasons to act in, perhaps without this episode Roberts' Bonanza run would have been even less? I was surprised that he was in 200 episodes, that's a long run for a TV show, and he got out around the half way point! Back to the story, this seemed so far fetched, I lost all belief and decided to watch it as a Lee Marvin vs Pernell Roberts death match fight. Things I noticed, a bath tub scene with Little Joe (hey ladies, lol). Also, the make up department had a field day with everyone here making them all deep brown tanned. The tan part must have been tied into early color TV and how they could make the show appealing on an early color TV? Part of my disappointment in this episode is that Marvin's role is weak and more typical of his wacko self from the 50's like in episodes of Dragnet, and not the more developed character he developed in his own show (M Squad) and the films he was in at the time (Liberty Valance). Sad that he was not in any more episodes but he was a busy actor on the way up at the time. He would have been a great gang leader that threatens to kill ALL the Cartwright's! Instead this is all we get from Lee Marvin on Bonanza. I predicted to my wife, who was also watching, that Ben Cartwright would kill Marvin (I was wrong). I was ready to give this episode a lower mark but the ending is a real tearjerker and Adam really looks delirious in the end so that brought it up for me. Even though the episode is silly and unrealistic, the ending made it an entertaining episode for me to watch, 6 or 10." Written by verbusen on IMDb.com

I find it incredibly interesting that Adam is dressed in a white shirt instead of his regular full black getup for this episode. Maybe symbolism of his strength and virtue despite the torture he experiences from Kane? The dirtier his clothes get, they’re still white. Intentional or not, it still makes for some nice symbolism for the overall episode. That ending was so moving too! Adam breaking down in the arms of his family - so many feelings! 🥺
Well it was only after season three that they made the four leads wear the same clothes in every episode to be able to reuse shots so they didn’t need to spend their budget on them and use it for other things
Adam was always smart and level headed, but he made a huge mistake telling out loud how much money he had.

One can find fault with the intro, Adam and Joe speaking openly about 5K. But we realize there is less than 50 minutes for bringing the plot to a conclusion. The writers had to get quickly into the meat of the plot. And Pernell and Lee Marvin did not disappoint. Stunning performance by both actors.
Just making excuses, it's not rocket science to come up with another scenario to explain what happened. Lazy writing, and showing Adam's character to be a true nit wit.

The hardest episode for me to watch each time I come across it....Adam finally breaking into the arms of his father was sadly beautiful. He needed to snap but to do it in a safe space. No greater safe space than the arms of his father.

Adam (Pernell Roberts) was fabulous. He loved the classics however and despite the fact that he did so well in other series, he always loved to do Shakespeare etc. He was so handsome and knew his craft well. I love watching him on Bonanza.

My all time favorite from the great series Bonanza, every time I watch the final scene when Adam breaks down after extreme stress and heat, I weep. Pernell Roberts was such an outstanding actor, and a maddening excellent performance by Lee Marvin who comes to pure evil.
What a fantastic episode. I cried when Adam cried. A broken spirit after going through pure hell and at the end of it, "pa." ❤️

I always have Wikipedia's list of episodes from Bonanza, and after a brief description of this episode, it said it was one of Pernell's favorite episodes because it showcased his acting ability. I have to say it also showcased Lee Marvin's acting skills. I thought he did a great job with his role in Gorky Park.

Especially after the episode before this one. Where Hoss tells the stable guy that they have $30 000 and they almost all get hung.

This is such a poignant moment. I love the Bonanza series and especially this episode. Pernell Roberts shines. Just a beautiful ending to a harrowing nightmare.
You could compare the moving ending to the ending in A Matter of Circumstance, the last episode in season 11. Joe is severely injured by a frightened horse and spent I don't know how much time at the Ponderosa alone. In the end, after an unsuccessful attempt at amputation, Ben and Hoss showed up. A doctor was called and Joe was placed on his bed with the food, water, and medicine he needed. The look on his face in the final shot made clear how he felt to be safe with his father there to take care of him so he'd be all right. It was a trying episode to watch, just as The Crucible was, but the ending made it all worthwhile.

this is literally one of my favorite episodes out of anything ever. I remember being CAPTIVATED as a kid and I still am in my 30s lol
That was a dark one. Made me weep also. I did love Adam best of all the sons. Parnell was way underrated.

Good actors all around yes. But somewhat of a contrived story. Those days petty theft, street robbery day and night, murders for a few dollars was rampant. No one sat around, or walked around loudly discussing a $5,000.00 payday in a bar or anywhere else outside of closed doors. They kept that kind of cash in tight money belts tucked away under their shirts, and did not discuss it.
As long as we watch they will never really be gone.

Lee Marvin was such a brilliant actor. I loved all his work. Bonanza was lucky to hire him, he was one dramatic powerhouse. I loved him in the 1964 remake movie, The Killers, and the intense Hell in the Pacific (1968). Stellar performance by Pernell Roberts. Landon wrote part of this script, and a great it was.
Marvin was lucky to be on bonanza, not the other way around. Never heard of Marvin before bonanza, but bonanza we have heard of. In Norway.

That's a false equivalency. They didn't have just enough horses and water for themselves. Also he didn't just put them through hell.
I believe had P. Robert's had stayed he would have been just has productive and successful as M. Landon.
Adam is willing to sacrifice his own life to maintain the Honor and Integrity of his humanity, rather than be tempted "in the desert by a Satanic force" that would tempt him to abandon his nobility of soul. An amazing and morally relevant allegory. In the end, "angels" came and ministered to him. An example for all of us to follow. The suspense was interminable - Pernell Roberts was beyond praise in playing this part. Of Lee Marvin - this was just his kind of role, he always played an evil and cruel part in any movie. Maybe it was his menacing voice that always type casted him. A splendid and though-filled episode.

@Joe Owens. Your comment was well written Joe. Adam proved that his Christian moral values that were instilled in him by the way that his father brought him up prevailed. You're right. Not even being tempted by the Satanic behavior of Mr Kane could change Adam. Adam hung on as long as he could before he cracked his armor and tried to strangle Mr Kane. But, when he realized what he was doing, he stopped. Adam's decent moral values shown through. He tried to get help for Mr Kane, but when Adam's pa and brothers arrived, it was too late for Mr Kane. Adam had tremendous strength, decent moral values, and patience. This story shows how we need to keep our Christian moral values no matter what we go through. Adam could have tried to find a way to kill Mr Kane, but his decent moral values kept him from doing that. Pernell Roberts and Lee Marvin were superb in this episode and it was very suspenseful. It was well written. I really cried at the end.
@Joe Owens. Another way that you could tell that Mr Kane was a mad man full of greed was because he killed his own mule to keep Adam from leaving. That made me cry. 😥

The way he just drove Adam into the ground worked tortured him laughed in his face drove him like a human slave great acting on Lee Marvin and Pernell Roberts parts

At the time of this episode, Lee Marvin was already a movie star and rarely appeared on television...(had just completed filming “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence” with some other actor named JOHN WAYNE”)...but as a favor to his old friend, Executive Producer David Dortort, he agreed to appear in this episode...which clearly became one of the top ten Bonanza episodes of all time

His dream 4 Riches & his complete disdainfull display 4 human dignity thru more insaine greed. Adam played it straight by the books, except for his transgression when fighting 4 survival. But still let him live. And then found the courage 2 drag him on a litter. Oh my goodness. Marvin was a gr8 actor & bought such reality 2 this episode. And Pernel Roberts did what he did best by playing his role with gr8 dignity.

Roberts really showcased his acting skill here, he poured his heart and soul for being Adam, the (most definitely) better man. Superb acting by that Kane actor too, he's insanely psychopathic. He was wrong to carry that man when he had only enough water for one person, in the man's own words. Adam should have recognized he had a duty to himself as well, and to his family. Him carrying that man was just ego and pride to not "let him win".
The is the second straight episode where Adam blurted out LOUDLY that he was carrying a huge lump of cash and overheard by some seedy guys. LOL.
If he hadn’t, it would have been a 10 minute rather boring episode.😂

Oh wow! I actually saw the microphone overhead at 2:37-2:38 when they are asking where they can get a bath. Not the first time to see a microphone in older shows which didn't occur often, but quite obvious when it did. Great acting by the cast making it a Great episode!

The hilarious ending, like Alfred Hitchcock's thriller, we have two punk boys steal a man's hard earned money with no respect or understanding or value, leave Adam, in the desert without any assistance, laughing about it and end up dead. Then Adam after walking for some miles, winds up with Lee Marvin in some insane self destructive jealous hysteria, taking a last stand toward a fake redemption in a jealous facade of a fake emotional tirade of self destruction, wanting to die. All the while Adam's family is searching at the precipice of where Adam is a slave, and Adam's attempt to save his own, and his nemesis life also saves his own, at this point, the tears began to flow from my eyes. The great acting script and the treachery were hypnotizing. Another Good Bonanza episode.

I think this episode was intended as a psychological thriller with a sadist for a villain. Instead of threating Adam’s life he attacked his very core, preying on his humanity and pushing Adam to protect this essential part of his being at the expense of his common sense and practicality.
Here we cannot see the choices that are familiar to us in the character of Adam because he has become isolated by the harshness of circumstances and the cruelty of psychological and emotional blackmail. This become evident by the end, when he is pushing a dead body through the dessert almost as an act of redemption for sins he didn’t even commit.
Sadists aim to destroy the mind and the soul of others as an act of revenge for whatever it is they believe has wronged them and refuse to heal in themselves. Ultimately they want to prove that every person can be pushed into hell because they won’t take themselves out of their own.
They’re not about to listen or understand, because they’ve lost interest in growing. They talk and maneuver to entangle and, therefore, the ultimate challenge is never to bite their bait.
Adam would have been better off by simply leaving instead of trying to reason with the guy building the web around him. This is the legitimate choice that eludes us over and over again when we fail to realize that a dangerous scenario is being weaved around us.
Adam couldn't leave! Here was staring down the barrel of a gun or a rifle all the time. The one time he tries, in the middle of the night, he almost gets himself killed by Kain and after that attempt Kain keeps tying him up every night.....

WOW! Amazing indeed. Pernell Roberts & Lee Marvin in an hour long episode. Can anyone ask for anything more? The two finest actors ever...neither has ever made a bad film. I'll be watching this many times over. Thanks for posting.
Over 65 years of viewing great & fine films...this (I think) is one of the best dramatic films I ever saw in my life.
The ending when they find Adam almost mad...the torture Lee Marvin put him through, etc, kept me on edge of my chair and by final scene I ust wept. Pernell Roberts is a superb actor, outstanding!

When I saw the name Lee Marvin appeared as the guest start, I said to myself "Oh I gotta see this one!". Lee has been one of my favorite "Old School" Hollywood heavies. Even when he plays a 'good guy' he can be psychotically mean, of course mostly to the bad guys! Honestly I haven't seen as many of his movies as it may have sounded at first. But I can remember him back in the 70s on Black and white TV when I was a kid. He certainly intimidates me back then.
After reflecting, one of the thrives was a fellow worker on the cattle drive who planned the robbery because Adam recognized him.
Thats WHY you ALWAYS CARRY A XTRA GUN HIDDEN.
Jim West in "The Wild, Wild West" show always did.
