On Friday, CD Projekt Red has released a new song from their highly anticipated game Cyberpunk 2077, Never Fade Away.
After my cover of the first song, Chippin'In, some of my dear viewers kindly asked if I could tab this second song.
Great ear training and super fun song!
I hope y'all enjoy this one as much as the first one!
The in-game band is SAMURAI led by Johnny Silverhand (played by none other than Keanu Reeves!)
The real band behind the song is Refused!
I wish CD Projekt Red all the best in finishing the development of this game. May it be as good as The Witcher Series of which I've always been a huge fan of!

Thanks Luka! For this one I used my Boss Katana 100 head recorded via USB. A few other covers I used Bias FX pro 1. Check out the description for the details in my SAMURAI covers to see which one it is. For Bias FX 1 I made a few presets available in the tone cloud.

Can i play this song with an USA HSS Strat?
Sure, it only uses the bridge humbucker. Also, you can play any song with 6 strings as long as you enjoy it. Might not sound exactly like the original if it has a different kind of pickup but in general the more distortion, the closer you should be able to get to a different pickup.
Don't stop yourself from trying a song just because you don't have the same configuration as the original player ;)
I build guitars. I just tried on an acoustic guitar I just finished. Not the same thing (probably better off playing those riffs you hear in the badlands) but close. I have a Strat clone with Original Floyd Rose that I am trying to finish, never got to it for a year. The game made me want to attempt to play it. I'm like Leo Fender when it comes to guitars. I build them, but can't play for shit.

@@HawkwardSolo If you just want to assemble pre made parts where most the hard work like finishing is done for you, then its not hard to achieve professional results. However it would cost money if you are using well made hardware. Also you are more or less limited to electric guitars with a bolt on neck like stratocasters and telecasters. Building acoustic guitars, especially from scratch will require lots of expensive specialized tools and lots of trial and error. Much harder than trying to learn how to play never fade away from a tab. But im not much of a guitar player. I am like Leo Fender who builds great guitars and possibly amp but cant play for shit. Even relatively uncomplicated song like never fade away gives me pause because i lack reflex. I wish i can make music on my guitars rather than just build them.
I will warn you to not use inexpensive parts... especially floyd rose trem units. Otherwise you will have a guitar that never stays in tune (instead of never fade away)
Great cover, but I'd play that small variation at 0:42 with hammer fingers as: 2 - 0 (D string, 4th one), then open string 0 on the A string (5th), and then 3 - 0 hammer on the D string, then open A, then open E (which's dropped to D).

Totally valid. It didn't sound right to me as I'm not used to play the open position and probably bent the strings a bit too much with the pull off and I think I remember the open 4th and 5th strings ringing too much to my taste. Anyway, the notes are the same, whatever sounds best to you will work

I had a question though. Starting at 00:17, are you hitting those muted notes on the open E or on the 2nd fret of the E string? I see on the tabs that are linked, it's open. It looks like you're playing it open, but the tabs on the video show it on the 2nd fret. I guess it depends on how the string is tuned?
Yes, as I say in the pinned comment another user made me realise the mistake in the tabs. I fixed the uploaded ones but I can edit the video. I tried adding an annotation saying that but I guess not everybody has them on.
So the way I play it, and what I think is the correct way is plam muted open string or x's
PS : actually just noticed the pinned comment wasn't pinned anymore, probably after editing it. Fixed that too now

@@Carlos-ko9zy Oh ok, then it's a matter of slowing the riff down until you can play it and ramp up the speed. One important thing is to play slowly exactly the way you would play it fast so you get the movement right and then muscle memory will help you speed it up nicely.

Well spotted! Not sure how I messed that up. Probably wrote the tab this way with 2's but started playing x'es later on.
I don't think it would sound too off, but might be trickier to get clean.

The jumps is the part with the gallops? if yes, practice them slowly and build the speed up, keep your wrist loose, don't try to use your whole arm.

as a total layman, i can't for the life of me understand how you can see all those numbers and know how to move your fingers accordingly. but thank you for the amazing music, nonetheless.
Haha thanks! But the code is fairly easy to crack once you know the basics. Tabs are much simpler than standard music notation : One line per string, each number corresponds to a fret (shinny things making cells on the guitar neck). You just place your finger on the cell number and BAM you got the sound. :)
Usually you don't play as it reads, you slow things down and learn chunks at a time repeatedly until you have it memorised.

And great coincidence for the bun, I actually released this video 5 days after CDPRed published the song, more than a year before the game.

Unfortunately I'm very bad at tone shaping. I kinda found my main tone by chance and tweek it to fit my needs depending on what song I play...

And that's all folks. Fairly simple for a hard-rock tone I think. Note I have a humbucker equipped guitar with I'd say medium/medium-high output

Instead of going 7 5 0 8 5 0 at 0:35 you should just pull off the 2nd fret on the 4th string, pick the 5th string, then pull off the 3rd fret on the 4th, then pick the 5th string again. Much much easier and sounds exactly like the song.
The PO's didn't sound right to me. Maybe I was slightly bending the string while pulling off and didn't practice it enough to make it sound right but in the end I preferred this.

Someone who’s good at guitar, is there anything special to picking up and down on one string? I can’t do it fast my fingers get stuck
Hi, I'll ignore the part about being good at guitar but first of all, are you using a pick? I assume you're talking about the right hand, am I correct?
If that's so, there are two types of picking for one string only, full alternate picking meaning constant and regular up and down movements, also called tremolo picking (used a lot in black metal). Then there is the burst type, often in metal they are what we call gallops, these are very often groups of three notes played very fast, Metallica (check their song Battery @ 1:06) is an example using a lot of fast gallops and I assume these are the types you are asking about which start at 0:17 (0-0-2 pattern, the tabs I show in the video have a typo it's not 2-2-2)
Out of the two, gallops are easier to get fast because you don't have to sustain the speed, it's only a very short amount of time.
The way I practice these is firstly start slow to really get the movement, only play the open E string (or D if in drop D) palm muted. Regarding the picking it should be down-up-down always. Then when you increase the speed at some point you can't really focus on every note anymore, just make sure the first one is in time and the other will fall into place as you pratice a bit.

That is awesome! The secret with any instrument is to spend time with it, for that to happen you need to have fun!
As for the guitar, go with something that inspires you, that you find cool and/or beautiful. The only thing you might want to consider is what type of pickups you want as this will result in a type of sound you can produce. Either single coils or humbuckers. All the rest is more your taste than something that'll make a difference to your sound.
That said, if you can, I'd advise you to get a nice instrument possibly a well maintained second hand. Because if it's well priced it shouldn't lose value so if you can always re-sell if it doesn't work out for you and at the same time you won't have the excuse of telling yourself that if something sounds wrong it's because of the instrument. So you'll push yourself to get better.
Note that there are good instruments at many price points, if you have somebody you know that plays, consider asking him/her to come with you. If not, that's not a problem there should be videos on whar to look for when you buy your first guitar.
