You are an amazing man Shawn! I watch several channels on homesteading. You are the only one who plants food for the animals, who thinks about how feeding the animals might keep them out of your garden. Well done Shawn!!! I love both of your channels. Thank you!!!

Even though your work list seems endless, you can feel/see the general excitement you have with all the projects. Your garden is going to be fruitful because of your massive efforts and planning.

You stole my thunder. At last he looks more excited. Never seen him so busy. But we never quite know the sequence of days and compilation. But loving the drone and animal shots. And his daughter is having a red hot go. And her confidence knows no bounds. This family in the near future is going to be great watching. Even though love you Shawn. Nearly walked away as it was not working for me. All the best.

Always appreciate your rational and realistic approach to self sufficiency. Been watching for years and while I probably won't have the opportunity to develop my own piece of land I have started taking more opportunities to become self sufficient. I have a good size back yard that basically just sits unused and with the price of food I've started to make plans to convert a large portion of my back yard in gardens to grow fruits and vegetables.

I really love how you're planning in such a cooperative way with the environment. I know from following you for the last few years that you have a philosophy of cohabitating with the wildlife, but hearing your plans about food sharing is really cool. Contributing to the animals' wellbeing while providing a sort of buffer against their encroachment on your food space. Awesome!

You are a good steward of the land. This year, I am buying about 6 heirloom tomato plants and putting them in the flower garden by the back door. Going to forgo the annuals that I usually put in there, but the perennials will remain. I have been growing organic chives in a planter box on the back porch for a couple of years already. I also encourage dandelions to grow in that dooryard garden bed.

I have been collecting moving blankets for the last few years (as big as I can find) then use 5 mill plastic to go over that! I put 3 foot poles in line with my plantings just so it easy to cover garden. Work pretty good!
Don’t forget your raspberry, blackberries! Hazel nut will be good and extra you rack up you can put out for wildlife.
Your moving forward so that’s great!
Your right about solar. Keep your life simple! Thing are going to get ugly!
Batteries, look into forklift batteries price.
I put around the house 2 watt led light and then turn on brighter lighting for tasks!

We are on battery only power with 3 Milwaukee packs. The freezer is needed soon. We have a 3000watt system ready to go soon. Plenty of power for future cabin. Also have a smaller system of 600 watts we will need for internet/computer. The rest is on Genny. Tools mostly. Rarely use it. People use way more power than you actually need in life.

Wonderful job of sharing what you know...just in case you didn't know...when cutting rhubarb, my mama always cut the stalk from the leaf and then would put the leaves under/around the plant. She always said it put the needed nutrients back into the ground the plant needed and she grew big plants about a 5' x5' area. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry and cool...

In regards to solar I would still reconsider and put in more panels for that little extra redundancy for short winter days or rainy and overcast days when you tend to use more energy indoors or in your workshop. Happy wife = happy life. Also when you get visitors they will all want to plug in their battery devices and recharge. I have been with solar for over 10 years and it's those overcast and rainy days or snow on your panels which may challenge you over time. It is easier to do it right first time comparing to the need for expansion later.

It's amazing how little power you have to actually use to be comfortable. Anytime you don't have an inverter and go directly to DC saves additional power of between 25-30% of converting to AC too. My off-grid cabin works with only 320W.

I would think that the land down by the creek would be great soil for potatoes but it will come in time for you it is too much energy for you LOG CABIN comes FIRST !!! Rhubarb will be great Shawn mine got hit big time with FREEZING I got it also and when splitting it I add cow manure to the one that I take from and the spot that I put my next rhubarb plant it grows like a weed then for me !!! Northern WI I had 21 plants of it now I have 6 plants am like you I keep track of what I take and which one I do !!!

I understand your dilemma... Our plants are starting to get out of control and we really need to go ahead and get them in the ground. We are in Iowa and it's finally starting to get decent outside. However, there is a chance that a frost could wipe out all the hard work that we've done getting ready for this growing season... Definitely a stressful time 😄

Been here for almost 6 years maybe more you prove that when theres a will theres a way.. Just wish that you were able to start this new environment way sooner as much as I loved the other place and it took frustrations of why leave and yes I do know why but everything takes time the food system you are planning is golden but your age to enjoy it at its greatest is gonna be hard cuz the trees and certain plants might never be at full peak where everything is perfect in your physical timeline you are prepping a gold mine for your kids and you will always be good but it takes a lifetime for perfect setup of that diversity of your plans and you are perfectly doing that but maybe not able to enjoy the fruits of your labor at its finest and you also have to hope at your time of continuing it is halted that someone will take over so your dream of perfect ecosystem in that area stays on its path.. I love every video and this isnt a complaint whole point is you are doing everything perfect just for your sake of truely seeing and enjoying it wish this all started 20 to 30 years ago with your knowledge and skill you amaze all of us I just wish you in your lifetime could see the end result of it.. Thank you for all you have shared and hopefully continue to

In one of ur other videos you said that this part of Canada, is like islands with water everywhere. In this video you said that you have 100 acres. Do you have a private fish pond, or lake of several acres, that could hold a large fish population? Perhaps in th future, you could go to you known swampy area, and have a small lake dug, that won't encroach on th existing wildlife, but yet add to your food stock, naturally. I met a man in Georgia, of America, who had a long and deep ravine, that took up approximately 12 acres, he had a damn erected, cut out many of th trees growing down in that ravine, and established a very nice 12 lake there. It made a better environment for th animals in his area.

I noticed in not this video but the one previous, there was a silver birch tree that looked as if it needed taking down, probably split during a storm and if allowed to drop naturally could do your property damage. Just thought I ought to mention it, in case you haven't seen it Shawn.

I don't know if you like or are planting rhubarb but they prefer shade to grow, I had mine in an open area and they grew but I didn't get any decent sized stalks, then last year I transplanted them into a shaded area and they are growing well now and developing larger stalks. Rhubarb is lovely mixed with plums, stewed down, they make a lovely sauce on ice cream etc.
I hunted rabbits for years as they are a major hazard to farming and infrastructure but we were not allowed to shoot them. With rabbits if you want them for food put a tunnel trap in so they can get in but not out or you can fit a box trap into the fence that allows them in and out until you want some and pull the lock and allow them to fall into the box. I don't know if you know but if you fence for rabbits, make sure you lay it at least half a metre out from the fence as rabbits dig at the fenceline to get under it, when you lay it away from the fence they will move back but not that far from the fence, protecting your crops. The shrub Buxus is also good for rabbits as they do not like it and will try to make there way around it rather than through it. Planted on the outside of the fence you could make it work if you had a box trap in place and that was the only place Buxus wasn't planted.

I can remember as a kid, it was not unusual to see 20 Monarch butterflies a day, I saw a documentary on Discovery channel a few years back, that the Monarchs return to the same coast or Island every year, the trees were bright orange just covered with Monarchs as far as you could see. There was a typhoon or hurricane that year, and it wiped out a huge percentage of there population, I believe it was 70 or 80 percent of the Monarchs died, and because the entire population was there , they said it would take years for them to recover to what they once were in population, I was just stunned that 95 % of the population returns there every single year. I love the Discovery Channel, you just don`t realize the important role a small insect plays in the big picture of things.

I suspect you know this but don’t cut rhubarb, you want to twist the stalk off the main plant so it continues to grow replacement leaves.

Hi Shawn I lived in a winter frost area🥶 I was a bit of a garden tragic who couldn’t wait to plant out my seedlings for an early start for growing veggies and fruit. Did you know if you wash the frost off your plants with water before the sun hits them the frost won’t burn them off. It worked for me for years. The only trick was to stop the pipes from freezing 🥶. I love watching your journey to be self sufficient.

I’ve seen them spray the grapes and fruit trees in the Niagara, Ontario growing region to prevent frost damage

We used to spray the grape vines and gladioli on our farm in Rhodesia pre-Dawn and sunrise in winter to prevent frost so know this works. Good luck Shawn. Always rooting for your success. From Idaho USA.

In our regular house since I switched to LED lights our energy consumption has REALLY dropped. In the van with only LED's it uses so little energy for lighting it is nuts, on two batteries I could go a year and still have power for just lights. The only thing that I can see you needing more panels for is in the depth of winter. Maybe better to get a couple portable panels that you can use when you need to and would be easier to keep snow off.
