I am very disappointed that there's no timecode facility on the DJI system. Given that, on the Pocket 3, you can jam synch from an external clock, it's a massive oversight not to carry the timecode synch over to the TX units - given that, in many cases, users will want to avail themselves of the 32 bit float recordings onboard the TX, but will then have to synch in post via audio - something that's not always going to be possible in a multicam situation. Same applies to the Action 4 (and 3, I think) - both can be jam synched for timecode, so I just cannot understand why DJI's left this facility out. Massive shame, and means that the Rode Wireless Pro wins out. Also, the artefacts on your noise reduction tests on the pier are exceedingly distracting, so I doubt I'd be using that - much better to have finer control in post, IMHO, than have the DJI decide what it's going to do. Similarly, (and not just in your tests, but also on others) the noise reduction is too aggressive anyway, leaving the resultant audio sounding false and over-processed. The viewer's eyes and ears do not deliver the same story - in a noisy environment, some of the background noise needs to come through, otherwise, again, it sounds false. Further - no data transfer from TX units when mounted in the charging case? Why ever not? Another massive oversight. PLUS... the Rode system at 50 bucks more gives you two (count 'em) very decent lavs (usually retailing at a hundred notes apiece), while DJI has decided not to include their "accessory" lavs in the package? Nope - I think DJI has seriously missed the boat on this one. They're competing with, perhaps, the Rode Wireless Me two TX system, certainly not the Wireless Pro system.
Just to add - since you've obviously got a better track to DJI than many of us - will they, do you think, address the timecode aspect of all of this in a future firmware update? Sorry, but I am severely disappointed by this half-assed release.
Oh - and one further thing. It looks like you lose both noise cancelling and 32 bit float if you use a bluetooth connection to a phone or Action 4/ Insta 360 wossname. Can you confirm?
I am a TV cameraman for years and I ordered DJI Mic 2. Seeing the reviews I was a bit worried that the sound would be lacking some presence. I received DJI Mic 2 yesterday and made some tests. DEACTIVATING LOW CUT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. Then the voice is much more full, bass comes back and the sound of this tiny thing becomes amazing. Definitely be aware this is a really important setting. Really impressed so far.
I was looking at a few videos and seeing if anyone pointed out that a lot of these reviews didn't turn off low cut which is active by default. I was a bit worried about the sound presence as well but figured I'd order it and try myself and noticed that in the menu on initial setup as well!

Is it just me or does the Rode Mics sound fuller? When you're walking around on the pier, I get that there's a lot of environmental noise but I think I'd prefer that over that overly digitized sound of the DJI noise cancelation. 🤷🏻♂
Yeah, it does sound much better when you compare the recordings - both outdoors and indoors. And the noise cancellation on DJI is unusable. I'm kind of surprised David did not comment on that and decided to go with DJI - while I do prefer the look and form factor of these, Rode just sounds so much better.
For sure the Rode sounds fuller in mic, but once in post they can be equalized to sound almost identical. So the question then becomes overall system features and use case for what you need. I think the DJI is more creator focused, but if you're being paid for a gig, you have to go with the Rode for the locking lav port

Going via Bluetooth to your Ace Pro... do you still get noise cancellation? Or do you need the transmitter attached to get noise cancellation, to whatever camera or phone is attached?
The upgrade to 32 bit float, and adding noise cancellation are interesting new features. I think it's time to upgrade. Great review, thanks for sharing.

David, great review as always. What’s interesting (and I think others have mentioned as well) is I personally like the MIC “without” the noise cancellation. It just sounds more authentic….I want to hear waves 🌊 in the background when people film at the beach 🏝. I’m sure noise canceling has it place (like when I’m filming at the wife decides to run the dishwasher 😳). But for the most point I’ll probably keep noise canceling off. Thanks again! Already got my order in on this one. 👍
Iv had the wireless Pro on backorder for over a month, just canceled it and ordered the DJI.. the rode does sound better, but I would expect DJI to release some firmware to fix its downfalls. I like the smaller size and Bluetooth capabilities.
I know that sound preference is more subjective, but as far as your comparison test is concerned, I prefer the DJI's, in fact the vocals are crisper and more pleasant to the ear, which is great for recording people's activities, such as character interviews, wedding ceremonies.
Crazy subjective! I played audio from both systems unedited as well as edited (Fairlight) to 27 people last week. 26 of them preferred the rode. With and without Lavaliers. I myself have a hard time deciding which platform to choose, if I’d use it as a content creator. I really prefer the rode pro sound but I also like the Mic 2 sound. And I love all those features the new DJI has. I would love the DJI with the rode sound and timecode ability.. But as I am using it as a professional I must use what the clients prefer… So I am using the Deity Theos and/or the Tentacle track e. Far superior sound quality. The sound of the rode pro is closer to them and by far easier/faster to match, so I’ll grab that as backup/addition. As a one person TH-cam channel where I wouldn’t need those extra 10-20% more sound quality… I’d may choose the DJI Mic 2.
@@derdude8201 wow 26/27 people preferred the Rode... sounds right to me. I hated the DJI audio in this video. Super nasally & 0 bass. Totally agree with you, I was hoping DJI would have TC & a locking mic jack. Missed opportunity for sure.

a few questions. 1. Can 32-bit sound be recorded into the camera? via a transmitter. when using Rode? When using DJi mic v2? 2. If I use the same lavalier microphone, will the Rode have an audio advantage? 3. Does noise canceling work with the lavalier microphone? ps. i literally was about to click checkout on my cart for the dji. then I thought I would check if David had a video yet. thanks for making this and especially that beach scene the dji is so tinny and digital. i would take the full sound of the rhode and cut the noise than have less noise but very tinny low quality sound.
Boy oh boy the DJIs sound horable. I've been using a Tenticle track E for a 32 bit lav. The Rode looks interesting but haven't seen a reason to switch yet. Thanks for the review.
I have been using rode for a while now, and rode is a clear winner in the sound quality from this video. The locking lavs and the battery life, not to mentioned the onboard memory. Rode is my choice. DJI, you are my go to for drones :) David i love your videos, always watching!
I honestly feel the same way about the sound quality, even without noise cancelation, the sound was complete on the Rode in this video. It felt weighed down on the DJI. This was a great review.
Hello David! I love your channel! This is a great review video! Thanks! I like the Bluetooth connection option to the Pocket 3 or the Action 4. If I have both DJI devices, can you pair the transmitters with the Pocket 3 and the Action 4 at the same time or do the transmitters remember multiple pairings? The transmitters would then automatically connect to one of the devices as soon as it is switched on. Does it work? THANK YOU and best regards from Germany!
Awesome review dude, im on the fence about which system to upgrade to for my TH-cam channel... I like the sound of the Rode but i think ill go DJI only because I'm getting a pocket 3 and that will sync to it without a receiver ;)
I literally just got the rode wireless pro in the mail yesterday... should I return it? It did sound like the rode sounded a lot better, but noise cancellation seems very helpful. how strongly would you consider returning the rode wireless pro?
Hi Tristan, of course not David, but my opinion would be keep the Rode! For me personally the dji mic 2 is perfect when u need also bluetooth capabilities or when u're using an action 4 or the pocket 3. The audio on the Rode side is better and it delivers GainAssist. And in the kit u get the better lavalier mic! Just my personal opinion on this.
One thing you forgot that I don't think many people know about is that the DJI Mic 2 can be used with the Insta360 Ace Pro without a micro USB mic adapter. It connects to the Ace Pro using bluetooth. I don't believe you can do that with the Rode. However, the DJI Mic 2 transmitter was sold about 5 minutes after I got the email this morning... Unreal that they don't have more available on a product launch...
That is pretty shocking, but I totally get why a ton of people are just going for the transmitters alone. For $99 you pretty much get the full feature set of the combo pack without the ability to line in directly to a camera or charge in the case. BUT, if you're like me and almost always record internally and sync in post, you're essentially getting the full feature set for $99 which is pretty crazy!
How would you enable 32bit float if you only had the transmitter? With Osmo Pocket 3 it can be enabled on the OP3. Similarly with the mic 2 receiver. Not aware of any way to enable it if you only had a single transmitter for use with a phone?
Røde has one more advantage: timecode. Unfortunately not available in the DJI Mic 2 atm. But I agree, that the DJI Mic 2 probably is more favored by online creators.
About halfway through the video, so I don’t know if you mentioned it or not, but the pro is definitely more professional. The fact that it has a locking Jack for a lav Mic is a huge deal. Not sure if you mentioned it, but the pro also has time code encoding. Absolutely must for multicam. I have successfully used the pro to generate a time code, we jammed that time code into our Tentacle track E and sync, E systems, and now we have road and Tentacle working together.
I have been doing a ton of research on lav mic set ups for a TH-cam channel I want to start with a friend and this has been my favorite comparison video I’ve watched! Very well done and I think the DJI 2 will be the move for me!
I love the way you summarized target audience at tthe end.... immediately made me decision easier. The bluetooth connectivity is sooo useful can't believe rode didn't include that.
I thought the rode sounded better but I then remembered that I almost never rely on just the transmitter and usually use a lav. I’d like to hear a sound comparison using lavs on both systems. The one thing I do like about the rode is the ability to connect a usb to your comp and have all transmitters mounted whereas DJI transmitters need to be connected separately
With the Røde Pro you get two nice Lavalier II mics of decent quality and secure mounting. While you certainly could use some Røde lavalier or other lavalier mic with the DJI system, DJI has its own mic with angled connector to prevent dislodging it from the transmitter as well as securing the cable on the clip. So mics without the angled connector would not be optimal. And the DJI Lavalier mic is quite cheap so it would be a big surprise if audio quality is the same as the Rødes.
i been using rode go 2 for the last 2 years and i am loving it and in this video you can just hear the huge huge difference , which the rode is 10 steps a head
DJI seems to be all you'd need if you're a run and gun vlogger/creator. However, in a professional setting I would 100% use the Rode. I own neither - just basing that off of this video. The Rode has a much fuller sound to it.
apparently, the osmo 4 as 32bit float recording when connected on the mic 2. saw the option in the menu, in an other video, worth trying 😉 and nice to see you're still wearing the @shimoda backpack ❤😅
What jacket are you wearing in this video? Very nice w/ the built in hoodie. DJI seems like the better option for anyone using more than just a camera.
Hi David, great video. To get noise cancellation... does the transmitter need to be connected; i.e. if you use Bluetooth to Pocket 3, Action 4 or phone, you don't get noise cancellation?
Rode without noise cancelation sounds better than DJI with cancellation imo you can hear the wind and surroundings but you’re still much more clearer it’s perfect
Great video, as always. But, how different is sound quality when you send it through Bluetooth or the standard way? Also, the noise cancellation feature only works with the on board recording or it works as well when you send the sound to the camera through the receiver?
Rode sounds so, sooo much better. I feel like audio comparisons are often a preference thing or at least very similar, but there really isn’t a comparison here. I’d be upset if my audio sounded like the DJI.
@@robwasnj I'd like to see that too. I was kinda pulling for the DJI because I love their drones and wireless video transmission. Usually they disrupt markets, but this ain't it if that's how it sounds. Not having time code sync and a locking 1/8 port is also a bummer.
You missed that the DJI Mic 2 has a loop on the back of the transmitter clip that will hold onto the cord of the lav mic making it more difficult to disconnect
Great video! What lav did you use with your rode wireless pro that locked in? Was that the one that comes with it or can you use other lavs with it, like sennheiser? Rode sounds better to me personally.
Rode sounds better but the difference is minor and with a little eq in post sounds as good. We have switched to the DJI Mic 2 system for smaller package size but do wish you could leave the windscreens on!
The Røde does sound better but for the price and what it can do it’s a no brainer to go for the dji !! Just a bummer that I bought the dji mic 1 literally 5 days ago otherwise I would have got the mic 2
Hey David excellent video as usual. One question, since the DJI can transmit via Bluetooth does that mean I can use the mic with my laptop for podcasts and livestreams? And if so, could I get away with getting just the mic without transmitter then? Sorry if those are dumb questions. I look forward to your reply. Thanks Sage.
Yes, you can connect the transmitter directly to your computer via Bluetooth and don’t need the receiver for this. Be aware that the audio quality is significantly lower this way.
can you keep one paired to your pocket 3 and one paired to your receiver at the same time, so you can keep them both charged and use whichever one you need at the time? Will the Osmo pocket three receiver fit and/or charge in the charging case
The DJI Mic 2 that came with the Pocket 3 is the exact same transmitter, so it would fit in the system the same, but anytime you put the mics in the charging case, they'll automatically pair with the DJI Receiver and you would need to repair them with the Pocket 3 each time. I picked up the combo with the Pocket 3, so with this, I now have three transmitters total. I'll just keep the Pocket 3's charged via USB C and clipped onto the hard case so I don't get them confused with each other
Pro Tip - if you have the DJI pocket 3 with the mic 2 - you can but the DJI mic 2 (1TX + 1RX) and than buy the charging case, and than you can sync the Pocket 3 Dji mic 2 to the system, and now you have both, and your paying less than you would if you bought the DJI mic 2 by itself 👍🏼 And yes you can switch back and forth
Really good and honest review. I just watched Tony & Chelsea and couldn't watch anymore after a few minutes as the audio (funny enough) was horrible (volume kept changing throughout) as was the focusing (as there was no B-roll; just trying to do it all on one take so every couple of minutes, Tony would try to show something up close to the camera and it would take a while to refocus). You also brought up a lot more good points. Still debating on DJI vs Rode...
I had the road first system and then the road go to system but did not get the new road pro. Because I had a pocket 3 I did buy the DJI Mike 2 but after watching your demonstration I still also think that the road pro sounds better.
How does the DJI Mic 2 compare to the Rode Wireless Pro? I was about to order the Rode Wireless Pro, but am unsure of which to get now after the release of the DJI Mic 2. I shoot mainly weddings and vlogs. Thanks!
Totally! I'm hoping that in a future firmware update, the DJI could record two files each time it records, one w/o noise cancellation and one with noise cancellation! Sort of like a camera recording to two SD cards, but doing it all internally. That way you could choose whether you want some of that background noise in there or not
Of course DJI mic 2 sound is better but some times we need to recorde atomosphere around us to deliver specific message so sound isolation does t work in this case, I hope DJI can develop DJI 2 mic to have both option in one mike. Thanks for your amazing video!
Regarding the DJI case not being big enough, looking at the soft case that also comes with it I'm thinking the mics and receiver can be stored in the 3 little pockets and guess what...they fit with the wind muffs on. You'll need a second something to hold the accessory lavs and the 1/8th inch headphone cable thingy anyway. Hard case is there if you need to charge? Unzip, grab the mic(s), the receiver and the cord you need and go skipping the need to also open the metal charging case. Allows the mics to discharge a bit more for better battery health?....I'm rambling. Really appreciate this review, and the follow up about the pass filter.
I have DJI mic 2 with my osmo pocket. I also have rode wireless pro to use with my a6700. I can say without the slightest hesitation that the rode have way better sound quality. About noice cancellation - in postproduction it takes to click 1 bottom in any program. But of course DJI mic 2 is more comfortable to use. Specially with Sony cameras when you can connect that without cables. However we buy mics for sound quality 🤷🏼
On the beach the Rode Wireless Pro definitely sounded better to me, do you think it was that noticably different or could it have been the placement of rhe mics on your shirt?
the DJI Mic 2 noise cancellation definitely seems to work but I'm not sure I like the sound of it, just sounds too unnatural (referring to the outside tests). Hard to describe, maybe a warbly or tinny sound in a tunnel. Personally the DJI without cancellation sounds best to me, cuts down the noise more than the Rode, but not so much to the point of me not liking it. Thanks for sharing, great helpful video!
Cool comparison of the newest toys! :) While the noise cancelation function of the DJI mic is cool, personally from watching this video, I immediately notice that the onboard mic of the Rode Wireless Pro seems to pick up the bass frequencies a lot better.
Thanks, I thought i was the only one hearing that. This is the reason i'll be holding on to the Rode, its picking more natural frequencies of the user compared to the DJI which sounded like a High Pass Filter is applied.
@@DavidManningvlog That would also easily identify which one is charge or which one has the recording too. Of coz the alternative is to stick a cute sticker on each of them to identify.
Hey David. You mentioned the lav mic possibly detaching from the transmitter. Are you aware under the clip there is a slot to slide a lav mic through it to provide it some more security?
Rode sound is punchier and brighter than DJI. If I could pick based on quality of sound I'd go for the Rode but the pricing offerings from DJI are winning me over
on de DJI you can actually increase the record volume, it is just regulated...if you work in the audio system, you realise that high volume of the mic picks lots of noise...I don't think I would prefer the sound on the RODE, its picking lots...(watched this using my studio headphones that hear every sound almost)
I think I've officially made the switch back to the DJI system! Let me know your choice though and what you factored in!

The rode has a far broader frequency spectrum but…the noise reduction on the DJI is great and fantastic for vloggers and the price is right.
If only your voice wouldnt get messed up that much.
B&h still has some…. Get in where you fit in. Lol
@@redesignedlife777 they don’t have just the transmitter . I checked
Nice review David!. Patricks comment about turning off low pass is really important. Thanks for your good work:)
I’m very impatient with reviews. This video was amazing, truly gifted at what you do. God bless, Shalom.
I appreciate you watching👍
Mine arrives today... Retired the former and am looking forward to using!
Røde has one more advantage: timecode. Unfortunately not available in the DJI Mic 2 atm. But I agree, that the DJI Mic 2 probably is more favored by online creators.
Absolutely. I jammed the time code from the road into our Tentacle. System works beautifully.
doesn't rode come with lab mics also that lock ? he never mentioned that
@@Tonellacam yup!
Rode wireless rocks yoyo🤟
They're both so damn good, but that noise cancellation on the DJI is pretty bananas!
It’s over for rode 🪦💀
@@MarS-dc2qx only if DJI can finally improve audio quality, as well as latency and sync issues
The one thing I do like about the rode is the ability to connect a usb to your comp and have all transmitters mounted whereas DJI transmitters need to be connected separately
yes this is what I would like to see, a lav comparison instead of the mics on the unit.
Same! Using the same lavs on both systems to hear what sounds better that way
just look that difference 12:00 i guess rode is best
i been using rode go 2 for the last 2 years and i am loving it
and in this video you can just hear the huge huge difference , which the rode is 10 steps a head
The DGI Mic 2 is looking good!
Rode sounds loads better. Thanks for doing the comparison
Hey Dave. Can you do a test by plugging them into the various action cameras you have?
DJI seems to be all you'd need if you're a run and gun vlogger/creator. However, in a professional setting I would 100% use the Rode. I own neither - just basing that off of this video. The Rode has a much fuller sound to it.
I think that's exactly right. The locking adapter alone makes the Rode the choice for on set with lavs that will all have locking adapters on them
apparently, the osmo 4 as 32bit float recording when connected on the mic 2. saw the option in the menu, in an other video, worth trying 😉 and nice to see you're still wearing the @shimoda backpack ❤😅
The float is only recorded internally in the mic. Not on the camera.
Still think that the 32-bit float only records to the transmitter itself. And I LOVE that Shimoda backpack!!!
The RØDE mic sounded much better in my opinion 💁🏼♂️
I think the Rode is just what it says. Pro!!
Yes, a couple of reviews later and the Røde Pro with the built in mic sounds a bit better to my ears.
My body jerked when it switched from RØDE to DJI at the beach
I’m just wearing AirPods and the Rode isn’t just much better, the DJI sounds distractingly bad.
Yep
Would have like to hear what the mic sounds like via Bluetooth on your phone and Action 4
This review was solid David, well done.
What jacket are you wearing in this video? Very nice w/ the built in hoodie. DJI seems like the better option for anyone using more than just a camera.
Travis Matthew jacket👌
Hi David, great video. To get noise cancellation... does the transmitter need to be connected; i.e. if you use Bluetooth to Pocket 3, Action 4 or phone, you don't get noise cancellation?
Rode is best
Rode without noise cancelation sounds better than DJI with cancellation imo you can hear the wind and surroundings but you’re still much more clearer it’s perfect
Wow the DGI noise cancelation is fantastic!, the Rode voice sounds better, but the noise cancelation is a game changer!
Great video, as always. But, how different is sound quality when you send it through Bluetooth or the standard way? Also, the noise cancellation feature only works with the on board recording or it works as well when you send the sound to the camera through the receiver?
That noise cancellation on the pier was crazy good.
I did not like it at all.
Which one connects to action 3?
Hi - how did you record the sound of theses 3 transmitters at the same time? What system did you use to pick up 3 audio sources ?
Had all three set to record internal to the mics and then had two cameras setup for the range test section
Rode sounds so, sooo much better. I feel like audio comparisons are often a preference thing or at least very similar, but there really isn’t a comparison here. I’d be upset if my audio sounded like the DJI.
Totally agree, I truly wonder if a better lav mic with the dji could remedy this shortcoming.
@@robwasnj I'd like to see that too. I was kinda pulling for the DJI because I love their drones and wireless video transmission. Usually they disrupt markets, but this ain't it if that's how it sounds. Not having time code sync and a locking 1/8 port is also a bummer.
Does DJI Mic 2 work with GoPro 12 via Bluetooth?
You missed that the DJI Mic 2 has a loop on the back of the transmitter clip that will hold onto the cord of the lav mic making it more difficult to disconnect
Definitely think the ride mic sounds better, sounds more full. Thanks for a great video, definitely helped me decide which one I’d buy in the future
@@KroessThank you for the prompt and helpful reply!
can you keep one paired to your pocket 3 and one paired to your receiver at the same time, so you can keep them both charged and use whichever one you need at the time?
Definitely Rode!
Do either of these have monitoring?
How does the DJI Mic 2 compare to the Rode Wireless Pro? I was about to order the Rode Wireless Pro, but am unsure of which to get now after the release of the DJI Mic 2. I shoot mainly weddings and vlogs. Thanks!
The distance test is really good, i like how the rhode record the ocean sound, but the dji cancelation is dooope! Sooo, choose ur venom I guess 😅
Also do you have the low cut filter on for the DJI Mic 2?
DJI MIC 2 SYSTEM FER-SHER. AGAIN THANX FOR THIS KILLER INFORMATION. AND AS ALWAYS, STAY COOL AND KEEP PUSHIN'ON... PEACE FROM CREEL CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO
You can also put the red cable in the dji case even with the dead cats
Mic on the rode sounds much better but you could always add a lav right?
The Rode mic just sounds so much better. Everything about the DJI is better at except the most important thing - THE SOUND.
Great review. Super helpful. Time to ditch my old Tascams.
Great review, just got yesterday the DJI mic2! 😀
the DJI Mic 2 noise cancellation definitely seems to work but I'm not sure I like the sound of it, just sounds too unnatural (referring to the outside tests). Hard to describe, maybe a warbly or tinny sound in a tunnel. Personally the DJI without cancellation sounds best to me, cuts down the noise more than the Rode, but not so much to the point of me not liking it. Thanks for sharing, great helpful video!
DAVID! Will the Rode PRO wind muffs fit on the ORIGINAL Wireless Go? Remember the original muffs would never stay on. Thanks in advance!
Bo
I'm pretty sure they'll fit, but it's because I don't think they've changed the design much throughout the iterations or their mics
Compare it to the Holland lark M2 please: And man the Rode sounds way better than the DJI Mic2 at the beach.
Cool comparison of the newest toys! :)
While the noise cancelation function of the DJI mic is cool, personally from watching this video, I immediately notice that the onboard mic of the Rode Wireless Pro seems to pick up the bass frequencies a lot better.
Thanks, I thought i was the only one hearing that. This is the reason i'll be holding on to the Rode, its picking more natural frequencies of the user compared to the DJI which sounded like a High Pass Filter is applied.
i like the DJI MIC 2 on my Osmo Pocket 3 so looking forward to get the MIC 2. I was hoping the put a black and white mic in the 2 MICs package.
That would actually be a super solid combo setup for them to sell! That way you can choose black or white depending on what you're wearing!
@@DavidManningvlog That would also easily identify which one is charge or which one has the recording too. Of coz the alternative is to stick a cute sticker on each of them to identify.
Do the new mics and receiver fit in the old case, charge and sync?
Got the gen 1’s already but I got the DJI mic 2 with the Osmo pocket 3.
Nope, the transmitters and receiver changed shapes just enough!
Hey David. You mentioned the lav mic possibly detaching from the transmitter. Are you aware under the clip there is a slot to slide a lav mic through it to provide it some more security?
When would you use one of these mics over a shotgun mic?
I've been a big fan of the hollyland lark series mics for the past few years.
Rode has more body and brightness in the sound, and for $50 more, it comes with the two Lavs included that sound very good.🤔
Rode sounds significantly better :D Glad I got the rode wireless pro over this!
The lav mic lock on the rode > every other feature of the dji mic
