Restoring a 100-year-old family heirloom

- Stella’s ring had seen a century of love and wear, leaving it cracked, thin, and misshapen. As a cherished family heirloom with a timeless design, it held deep sentimental value. Stella wanted it restored to its original beauty so she could wear it proudly for a few more years before passing it down to the next generation.
In this video, I completely rebuild the ring by replacing the damaged shank, seamlessly blending it with the original design, and repairing the diamond settings with platinum wire using my laser welder. After securing the diamonds and polishing the ring, the transformation is nothing short of remarkable. Watch the full process and see how this treasured piece of history was brought back to life!

I love how you’ve gone from saying “it’ll hopefully last a few more years” to “this will hold another century of memories” I love these videos
But the first few more years is for ‘before passing it down to the next generation’. He was not necessarily talking about the durability and longevity of the ring.
@@Zeynomonthe comment was talking about before he fixed it
Jewelry repairs like these provide a fantastic answer to the ship of Theseus question: It really isn't about the item so much as the memories and sentiments it holds. Maybe one day this ring will have none of it's original components because it slowly got replaced, but the fact its wearers cared enough to get it fixed and repaired over and over means more than the ring itself as an object ever could.
And while the material may not be same as it once was the memories make the ring the same it's always been
the diamonds will probably be around for a very long while though. It’s more about how quickly the entire contents of the thing get replaced
I WAS THINKING THE ABT SAME THINGGGGGG
Ship of Theseus question?
@@gabriellegunvik4377 Basically, if you replace all of the planks of a ship, once none of the old planks are present anymore, is it still the same ship? Someone might be able to phrase it better but thats about it
Oh it looks absolutely stunning; you nailed mimicking the style of the era as well
I do
Everything that happens to that ring is a part of its history. In a hundred years, the added portion will be just as precious to whoever has it then.
When my mom passed away five years ago, I inherited her diamond wedding band. It’s so big on me that I’ve wound tape around the bottom in order to wear it. This has inspired me to get it sized. It really is beautiful and I should be wearing my mama’s ring!
i have two inherited rings, a lovely opal and diamond ring from my grandma on my mom’s side and my paternal great-grandfather’s claddagh ring. i wear the opal one with tape and the claddagh ring on a necklace because it’s wayyy too large for me, but these videos remind me every time i see them that i desperately need to get my rings resized
If it's that valuable to you, maybe try to get ahold of this gentleman and make an appointment with him!
Consider getting a sizing band installed, rather than completely resizing the piece
They have these little clear plastic coils/spirals that are called "ring resizers" that help instead of tape if that helps.
Or sizing beads inside the band they can shave down if you end up needing it bigger again.
They literally make adjustable sizers and spacers in a lot of styles for really cheap
At about 0:09 the old little metal box that you pulled some material from says "Lakerol (pastilles)" which I immediately recognized and was quite excited to see! This is because the company, that is actually named Läkerol with an "ä", is swedish and also happens to be founded (as well as produced solely for a very long time) in my hometown of Gävle! You can even see lower down that is says "made in Gefle, Sweden", which is how the towns name was spelled in the olden days. I understand that this may be completely irrelevant and uninteresting to most but to me this was like a very special easter egg since it is one out of the two big things Gävle has (or had, since production of the pastilles has now moved) going for us other than the Gävle goat, a huge straw goat that is built every year in the middle of town (and subsequently almost always set on fire). Really cool collectors piece! :)
That's neat, thanks for sharing!
Random New Zealander found this comment very interesting, actually. I also recently learned about the Gävle goat from a science/facts podcast, and even shared the fact and watched the Gävle goat youtube channel videos with my mum, lol.
I only learned about the goat because of one of ken and pewds videos. What you shared was pretty amazing for me! Thank you for sharing
I absolutely adore how you kept the original style in tact and didn’t polish away too much of the wear and tear. The repairs are all super practical and barely noticeable which makes it even more impressive. ❤
I love the care you took to restore this heirloom to its former glory. Many of these rings were delicately made and their owners tended to wear them constantly. My grandmother's ring from 1924 had prongs worn so thin, that the diamond fell into the cookstove fire and had to be fished out of the ashes. The little quarter carat stone was as bright and lively as ever. My grandfather took it to our local jeweler and had it remounted. At my grandmother's death, it went to my aunt. She never wore it so her sister asked to buy it from her. Aunt Frances bought the ring and wore it for many years. When she was in her 90s, a caretaker stole it from her. It made her very sad to lose it, but by then, material things did not mean as much to her. We were never able to get it back.
I'm disabled and dealing with carers is so hard. It's really difficult to find people that are both trustworthy and competent. One time I bought a brand new thermometer and left it on the sofa, the next day it had completely disappeared and never turned up again and I've had a few similar things happen since, luckily nothing of sentimental value, but since it's a company with multiple carers coming in and out I don't know who it is that's doing it. I also have a big problem with them doing ridiculous things like rearranging my kitchen to put things on top shelves despite the fact I'm in a wheelchair and tend to cook for myself (any time I've asked them because I've been too sick to do it myself they've made simple things like tea and toast so ridiculously badly I can't eat/drink it). I'm sorry about your heirloom.
This is so sad. Not as important as an heirloom, but my dad who I didnt meet till 18 got me a heart necklace with a paw print (because I've always loved animals) and when I ended up in the hospital, I woke up without it. Idk if someone maliciously stole it or if they had to take it off cuz I was breathing funny. But I never did get that necklace back and I'm still sad about it to this day 😪
@kaytlinreynolds4657 Sounds like your pendant was an American Indian jewellery from the Zuni tribe. You could try find another pendant that looks similar and pretend it was the one your dad gave you, just a suggestion. Sorry that there are thieves in this world, I have had my precious and very sentimental things stolen, truly the lowest form of life.
This looks so much like my grandmother's ring. I never got to meet her as she died when my dad was five so it's very precious to me. It took me awhile to find a jeweler who could fully restore it, but he did an amazing job. Most of the Jewelers that I talked to wanted me to reset the diamond in a new ring. They totally missed the point of why I wanted to restore it. You did a beautiful job restoring this and I'm glad that you do this.
I love this! I also have a 100 year old ring that is needing a new shank, but a couple jewelers have advised me against it. So for now it's unwearable.
Maybe that's because they don't have the know-how or confidence to do it? Kudos to them for not trying (and potentially messing it up) if that's the case, but it will be possible if you find the right person. Good luck!
You, sir, are a true craftsman and enrich people's lives by maintaining their memories through these pieces.
Another 100 years of beauty.
Stellar, you, madam, are an incredible human 🙏 I'm 46 and have an 8yr old son. His dad passed and both those grandparents passed before he was even a thought. Both my parents have passed, as have their parents. Hearing you want this beautiful ring salvaged for your future family makes my eyes leaky lol What an amazing blessing you are to your family. And Sir, your workmanship is impeccable and has ensured another CENTURY of Stella's family's happiness. Such an incredible legacy for both of yous 🙏
Oh my. This has me crying! I have my grandmother's platinum engagement ring which i never wear bc it is thin and I'm afraid the diamond will fall out! I'm ready to get on a plane with the ring to have you restore it!! ❤ Your care is heartwarming 💕
This is a service of inestimable worth to so many people. I hope people keep teaching it to new generations
I always love a buff on an old worn piece, brings life back without erasing the history
This heirloom restoration actually brought a tear to my eyes. I can't believe how much care and passion this man uses to reinvigorate old memories that go far beyond simple diamonds and precious metals.
The setting on Stella's ring is just like my Grandma's engagement ring. The middle stone was loose so I had a jeweler tighten it. Well, he cracked the side of the stone. Is there anyway you can fix it for me?
Oh wow! So sorry that happened to you. If a diamond gets cracked or chipped there is no way to “fix” it like you can with metal. You can possibly hide the crack by covering that part with a prong. Otherwise the stone would need to be recut but then it would be considerably smaller.
@@MassoyanJewelers
Thanks for answering.
There are no prongs on any of the stones. All the stones are sunk into the setting just like Stella's ring. Would you be able to add platinum wire to the setting to bring it up & over the crack to hide it? I would prefer that rather than having the stone recut.
@@MassoyanJewelersbump - kind of you to help people in the comments 👊
It’s amazing to me how my care you take in every piece. I would 100% trust you with a family heirloom
It looks absolutely gorgeous. Antique rings have so much more character and say so much more
This is so lovely! You did such an amazing job! ❤ I know these things are just something material, but when you loose relatives it is lovely to have these heirlooms and use them remembering them and honoring them. And it’s a way to preserve things for the past for generations to come.
You, my friend are a master of your craft. It’s a delight to watch you brilliantly excel at something that means so much to so many people. My hat goes off to you!
AHHHH i really wish I could have you work on a couple of pieces I enhereted from my grandma. Our family were jewelry makers and the rings are fantastically made... but the one I love the most has warped from wear and the other, the stone has fallen out of. You seem really skilled.
Amazing work
I love watching a skilled craftsman/artisan plying their craft. It is endlessly fascinating to watch
I love rings like that. Even better when theyre old family heirlooms.
The skill of the jewelers is impressive. It's a beautiful ring.
I love you just open these little magic boxes and >poof!< you have the perfect bead, bauble, jewel or gem to fix whatever the problem is, right there instantly! ❤
True artesian craftsmanship. Now that ring truly is beautiful.
What beautiful work you did on this ring. It’s gorgeous and I love the new band❤
This ring is gorgeous! Im so glad it can be safely worn again!
Beautiful work - that's what I call proper restoration. No swapping stones for bigger ones, just keeping precious memories intact and secure. Well done. And love the use of old tobacco tins for those odd bits and pieces! 😂
this channel always makes me so happy, thank you for being one of the genuine brightest corners of the internet.
The zoomed in video with your finger tips shows just how hard you work!
“Strong enough to endure another century of memories.” I love that.
I love your work. Please continue sharing with the world
Beautiful! I love watching jewelry repair and making. It's truly an art.
Stellar restoration for Stella's heirloom. Nice job
Watching a jewel/gold/silver smith work is absolutely amazing because of the amount of detail.
Wow! Beautiful work. Beautiful ring.
This ring looks great! Thank you for saving it! So many jewelers would say it's not worth the work. 💍
I love your art!! You are so amazingly talented as well as skilled. I would love to do this kind of work - maybe in another lifetime.
Thanks so much! For the most part it’s a very satisfying job.
Platinum is very hard to work with for these detailed pieces! Good job restoring it to it's prior glory! I hope it endures in the family and they don't fall on hard times
Your talent and care always show in the level of your craftsmanship and attention to detail. It's a beautiful restoration. Again, you've made someone very happy. Thanks for sharing.
great work, my grandma is two years older than this ring, she was born in 1923 and still fit❤
I’m a young and aspiring jeweler, I work under my father as an apprentice. Your videos are extremely helpful. And I am happy you are finding use in your laser headrest.!!! love the videos keep it up, man
I fix holes in my clothes all the time. How did I never consider jewelry restoration?? What a beautiful job. The ring is alive again.
Wow I thought I’d be a physiotherapist given a chance at another go around. But watching this artistry at work makes me realize I could work with my hands and enjoy so much passion while not beating myself up in the trades would have been kinda amazing ❤ and be right up my crazy alley. Since I missed my true calling as a vintage hoarder and architecture and historical interest collector slash picker seller and general all around rural hustler of turning water into wine. But young me didn’t know how to turn all my hobbies into a future. So I’ll be happy with the living I made for myself and make the most of the remainder I guess 😜 but finally living rural now back where I grew up as a kid and seeing other folks who’ve done it kinda is a bit of a gut punch. So jewelry restoration yeah. That’s a daydream that’s a little more healthy. And obtainable. I’m seriously considering some serious classes. There’s a mature program at a very nice art school near to me. With my background on the tools. I’m a fool not to prioritize something like that. That and that I’m a true crow and a lover of all things shiny 😜😜
I like watching jewelry videos. I probably won't ever own anything like this because I just don't really wear jewelry. But I love hearing everyone's sentimental stories and thinking about my memories alongside them.
I love your videos! Meaningful, rich storytelling, and fascinating yet succinct technical explanations. Thanks so much for sharing!
Making and restoring jewelry is so fascinating
I found you off of your video about Nina's ring and now i cant stop watching you. You are incredibly talented and these videos are incredibly satisfying to watch.
What a gorgeous ring, glad you were able to restore it.
I always love the work you do and the way you help people keep their memories my mom has a platinum tension set ring with one dimond but she is getting older and she has had that ring for 20 years it is her wedding ring but she almost never wears it anymore because she is so afraid of it getting stuck on her finger even though her knuckles haven’t swelled much at all and she can still put it on and take it off do you have any advice what so ever I’m sure it’s hard for my dad to watch her not be able to Wear because she’s worried that if it gets stuck we’d have to cut it off and then the ring would be no more
Rings that were cut off the finger can still be welded back together. Furthermore, a trick to get a ring past a stuck knuckle is to wrap the knuckle in a layer of dental floss to compress it and then pass it over. (You _must_ remove the floss immediately afterwards because it cuts off circulation.)
Stunning! I have my grandmother’s engagement ring, I’d love to have fixed so that could wear it. It’s safe in my jewelry box. Unfortunately, my sister had the wedding band and she pawned it!! I am crushed.😢 I hate drugs….
Great job beautiful beautiful beautiful ring❤❤❤❤❤
This makes my heart so happy 🥹🥰❤
Love how you used an antique lighter to light your welding torch.
Stella's ring got stellar! Amazing!
Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. My daughter's name is Stella and she'll be happy to see this video. 🩷
Your abilities are amazing, so much love and care go into each piece you work on. But also really superficial comment: those glasses are SO COOL
Love your work brother keep it rolling! 💪
I love all of the unique lighters you use. Yes, we notice! It’s been great watching you grow from only having a few videos until now! So happy for you!
Thank you for joining me on this journey and I appreciate your support.
I love how people have heirlooms that they pass down! I'm going to start this in my family as we don't have anything significant like that.
♥️Thank you ♥️for your wonderful ♥️education ♥️
i love the side by side before and after!!
Thanks. This is my first time doing it that way. Seeing both of them on screen at the same time might be a better way to showcase the changes.
100 years. This is amazing
You are a master at your craft 🥰👏🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Beautiful workmanship
Ur like an expert earth bender that's mastered metal bending😎
Dang, not only beautiful work on the ring. You look hot in your welding glasses😊 truly a rockstar!✨️
Ur the man & are very talented artist. Plus U bring joy to others & thats a wonderful thing that U do. That's priceless 😊
Wow love the results, great job as always ❤ 💍
That is an absolutely wonderful ring
This is truly an art form and as always an amazing job
Glad you enjoyed The Familiars despite the negative reviews! I know a lot of ppl didn't enjoy it because they expected vampires but didn't get vampires. Whatever the contents, the cover is STUNNING.
Also, just in case you read from her again, Leigh is pronounced Lee :) I only know because I thought it was pronounced Lay 😂
A platinum band from 100 years ago is impressive enough. That family must be rich rich
Huh… I never knew you could get rings like that fixed. You always learn something new.
Attention to detail at gorgeous work
beautiful job! I have the same ring that none of the jewelers here are willing/able to repair. I wish I lived closer.
Beautiful work!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 beautiful ring too.
It's gorgeous 😍 I love square cut cushion and emerald cuts.
That is amazing! I have an old ring that needs to be restored. It's almost 100 years old. It will be 100 in 5 more years.
Amen 🙏 ❤😊 awesome!!!😎 talented and very skillful.
I would love to see how this looks after a few washes 🙏 please update us so we can see the longevity of the things you make ❤
love the supplies sorted in the lil metal tins everyone has
Spectacular! Beautiful! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is so similar to my own engagement ring that was my husband's family ring. Good to know it can be fixed up when I get ready to let it move to the next family member.
Outstanding work!
Gorgeous repair
Beautiful work you are an artist!!
bro has mastered the mastery of restoration scroll.
