Years back my wife, two young daughters and I found ourselves in a very dangerous situation. We had been there 10 times before and stayed at a Five Star hotel. Where I made the mistake over the years I became friends with one of the staff. As such I asked him to take us shopping for a fee. Now let's get this straight I don't trust anyone and I watch for body language carefully. As we left things began to arouse suspicion. We stopped where I had requested until later on a dirt road appeared. Here is where things went bad as we rolled along quickly. I asked our driver to stop. He said trust me. Wrong answer. I told him to stop again as we drove deeper into what was known as little Haitai village in the Dominican.To put it perspective there was nothing there except dirt and crime, yet he claimed it was a shortcut to good shopping. Later I looked up the area on google maps, at the end was an open field, nothing else. At this point, I grabbed the wheel and turned it abruptly forcing him to stop. Pressing up against him I told him to back out of the area slowly. Which he did. It was apparent he had arranged a kidnapping scenario and He knew I knew it. If he had refused there was only one option, him or us and he wasn't going to win! As we got back to the main road I saw taxi stand and we departed his vehicle in favor of another unknown ride he had no connections to. Finally I would like to point out this could happen anywhere! PS the hotel you depict here is a two Star at best.
boca chica is cheap and is more likely for locals, tourists that goes there are more likely looking for drugs and prostitute. my suggestion are punta cana, samana, juan dolio, Puerto plata are the best places. you can not judge Dominican republic over one place, for sample here in the Bronx we got Orchard beach, is getto and is for locals, people sell all kind of stuff and I mean all kind of stuff, so you cant judge all the beaches in new York for that one alone.

I go to the DR regularly and I can't fault it, lovely warm hospitable people. I've only stayed on the bavaro beach, vendors are on the beach to, a polite no is all it takes. And if you go looking for drugs and prostitutes you'll find them in any country. Especially in London where I am from.
Was this the first time that those reporters went out from their backyard? Life is not easy in DR and people try everything to get some pesos. However, prostitutes and vendors are not a threat to tourists' security at all, you can just say No. This report would have made sense if someone tried to understand the life of those vendors and those prostitutes. My suggestions to those US "journalists" is to travel more and get to know real life for what it is: not always a bed of roses
I know. I was expecting a knife or gun to be pulled out. If it's legal it's legal. But I DO think people in the comments section are underestimating just how dangerous the D.R. really is.
I think most vendors will understand that if tourist gets hurt they will lose their source of income. However like anywhere else in the world, including here in America, you have to be smart because it only takes 1 person to mess things up and that person could very well be you.

The Dominican beaches are for the people. All people, not just the tourist and rich. Street Vendors have the right to look for business and simple no is enough. No vendor aproaches you, unless you give them sign of interest. Prostitution is Legal in the Dominican Republic. Just like many other countries including European countries. If you like it, do not ask for it.
I think that prostitution being legal is great. and if people want a lil coke once in a blue moon big deal. alcohol is legal and just as bad if not way worse for you. so.....
I have stayed there and it is a nice place. The staff and management were nice and very accommodating. There was plenty of security day and night. Only patrons and confirmed guest were allowed on resort property. The beach is public property. So the hotel can't control who is on the beach. The beach was beautiful and I felt safe. Like the big cities and the beaches of the US and the rest of the world all kinds of people are out there. The food was slightly above average but edible. I plan to visit again.

This video isn't directed just to the DR. They're just saying make sure any trip you're going to make sure you do your research. It doesn't matter whether your going to the DR, Japan, the US, Nigeria, or Greece. Just make sure you check out the place you are going to.

It was a freaking hit piece. They complain about vendors pushing their products on the beach. This is a poor country with people who live on $100 a month. What the hell do you expect? Just politely say no and move on. Also if the idiots that agreed to go meet prostitutes didn't want to be scared off they could have just said no to meeting them. I saw absolutely zero danger in this segment. As a hotel worker in the USA I am so happy and hopeful that this video got so many down votes. I hate guests that are just like this . Here are my reasons why. 1) they obviously went there to do a report knowing what type of town/ hotel this was 2) it is not the front desk agents or hotel workers job to know or to deliver the crime rates of an area or potential for crime or for ppl selling things especially on property that is outside of the hotel. #3) hair does get into sheets - unfortunately it happens as anyone staying in a hotel knows that this room, sheets, and bed have been used many times before them by complete strangers (why I hate staying in hotels) , but most guests don’t want to be reminded of that fact. With that said she could have asked for new sheets, housekeeping, or a different room instead of being dramatic about how she was sleeping ergonomically incorrect and got no sleep. # 4) this hotel , like many in DR, cater to Americans who do request and have a “ high” (pun intended) demand for drugs, prostitutes, and other non conservative things especially while on vacation. Was the reporter really mad that ppl in a poor country were asking if she wanted to buy a towel or a T-shirt or any thing that most tourist don’t want to get off their privileged fat asses for? #5) do your research before you stay at a hotel/resort and don’t complain if you didn’t do your research when you get there. This hotel may not be ideal for many ppl but for many others they are probably now flocking here because of this report and this is the vacation they want. I work at a hotel with no pool and people get pissed and write reviews complaining and that there is no pool. Well you should have researched the place you are going to stay and if you don’t do not take it out on the workers who have a job to be happy for the next guest that comes right after the miserable guest who wants to blame the hotel for everything and take no responsibility for not educating themselves and booking somewhere that meets their needs. Many ppl complain because the price is so much better (lower)at your place but doesn’t have the amenities they wanted. They book on price alone (which is reflective of not having the same amenities as a higher costing hotel) and get mad, but you get what you pay for. There are hotel deals in off peak season, but during peak season don’t expect a low price and over the top service, they rarely go hand in hand. #6) Groupon is not to blame and should not have been bullied into removing this property. Groupon sells things and there could have been many more factors as to the disparity in price for the same room. The guy paying less could have gotten a comp upgrade or he could have booked his room at a different time than the second room. Travel industry rates do fluctuate based on demand whether its air travel, hotels, rental cars, etc. Let’s just say the rooms were booked at the same exact time and they paid different amounts for the same room. Upon entering the room she could have made a simple inquiry to see why this happened. Don’t stay in a room if you are unhappy with it and dirty it up so housekeeping has more work to do. Let the hotel know right away so they can try to rectify the issue. Her snooty remark about the folded decorative towel on the bed being the reason for the disparity in fees was completely unnecessary. Maybe she should send her new husband there so he can get some time away from the new ball n chain
We were over there a few months ago and had a good time but due to Americans getting hurt, I won't feel comfortable going back. PS: If you go to the beach, they will bother you all day to buy something. That was annoying as hell.

I’m pretty positive that the people who had a drink and then died were given tainted alcohol. The same as the tourists in Mexico. You’ll see that it happens at all inclusive resorts, meaning they want to cut corners on the “free” alcohol.

I was 3 weeks in DR until last week, and I went to the beach, my mom said Boca Chica, my nephew who was driving us around said no and explained all that, we went to another beach "Jaun Dolio" and there: barely no vendors, more private-ish, not as pricy at all! Boca Chica may have been a good place once, but now it's just not anymore. but these people make it look more worse than it is, because the way I see it, they kind of went to the shady part, because they were so close to a normal city. thats not where tourists should go, unless you're a tourist and you're wife/husband is from there. tourists just don't know how to handle those stuff :'>

People need to watch part one. They didn't pick DR on purpose. They went through GROUPON and picked a good priced highly rated "getaway". They didn't do research (according to them) on where the actual place was. The reporter just looked at pictures the Groupon had online. This isn't some conspiracy. It isn't meant to show DR in a bad light. It isn't some "secret agenda by someone in ABC who hates DR " like someone suggested. It's literally a segment on how you should be careful anytime you book with Groupon or google.

Depending on someone's perspective you could be giving them free advertising. I also found it interesting that the males that were supposed to check on the prices of the prostitutes took a full hour to do so and then failed to mention what prices they were being told.

Some people are used to better lifestyles so things like stains get to them. And hookers can be filled with diseases and can be related and communicate with sketchy people who can get u in bad situations.

This is not only the only country with some issues. Not everybody is perfect. It's the best caribbean destination for a lot less than others in the area. My prefered spot!!

This is BULSHIT! You can go to the most expensive destinations and visit the crappiest places. Go to Bavaro, La Romana and other destinations in the D.R. This "investigation" seems to be payed by the competion. Really, the D.R. is like most every other place; go to crappy places, that's where you'll find. Anyone-including reporters-staying in a hotel without extensively reading reviews from multiple web sites deserves what they get. Everything you said was written in reviews which are posted online already. The are pictures posted by tourists that show how bad the area is. That resort probably is sustained by those who are looking for prostitution. There are lovely, clean resorts in the DR. They are in tourist areas. The result I stayed at had guards on the beach armed with machine guns. You can be sure no vendors went around bothering the guests. A lot of people do not want to be around tourists. They want to mingle with the locals, and that is exactly what you did. The first thing I do when I check into a hotel is check the bed. If the bed and room are not clean I go straight back to the desk, demand a refund and move on. You can’t complain about the night you spent in the bed because you could have easily moved on. As far as the rates go, it is very well known that the best rates are obtained directly through the hotel.
Legalize prostitution in the United States and the citizens would probably be happier. Legal safer operations and less sketchy situations for the USA like Craigslist was
I went DR last year and it was recommended to stay in one of the big name places. More expensive of course but top notch. This one seems it was more of a single owner type and had less security enforcement. 1 hour is a long time lol

Then, when approached you show interest and your colleague tells you "The two of you guys should go down there and find out what it costs." So you go down there and find out what it costs. And that's scary? I didn't see anything scary there. Look, I understand that Americans are "shocked" that in the DR, where prostitution is legal, prostitutes are available. In plain daylight because you're in a place that's got a reputation for it. But nobody's forcing you to take up any of these offers. I've worked in Haiti as a humanitarian aid worker. Went to the DR twice for short vacations. The first time, I didn't have many days; I wanted to go to the beach but not spend too much time traveling to get into the quiet hinterland (I was traveling by bus because of travel restrictions by my organization). It was off-season and I went to Sosúa. I was aware that it also had a reputation for sex tourism. Guess what. I did see some girls but I wasn't forced to have sex with them. Once in a while, they approached me. I told them "no, thanks" or "I'm not interested". They let me in peace. I didn't treat them like shit, simply minded my business. I've felt more bothered by vendors of other stuff. I didn't like Sosúa too much, not because of the hookers but because it was too commercial even at off-season. But I don't complain because that's just the nature of the place. It wasn't horrible either, I just had to walk a little further to more quiet places. The next time, I went to the Samaná peninsula which was gorgeous. It turned out that there was a new road that wasn't in my (apparently outdated) travel guide which had been lying around in one of the organization's expat houses. I had expected to travel the entire day to get to the tip of Samaná but arrived several hours earlier. Had I known this, I would've gone there or a similar place the first time around instead of Sosúa. Anyway, Samaná was amazing. Great people (I do speak Spanish which might help to get in touch with "normal" people instead of just salespeople looking for tourists), amazing nature. The DR is like many places: you have "party zones", possibly with hookers available, for those who are interested in that. And other places for those who aren't. Nothing wrong with the former. But don't go there and then complain about it.

This is old news. I have stayed twice at the Don Juan in the past with no issues. It is now called Whala and I just stayed July 30 to Aug 1, 2019. The police roam the beach and the resort was very clean and the staff were friendly. There are still vendors selling things, but they have to avoid the police. Things change over time, don't let this old 2013 article stop you from experiencing a great time.
@@kmcl11 People die all the time. Most deaths were the result of people drinking from the mini-bar. It was found in Costa Rica that there is tainted alcohol containing Methanol and it appears that the Dominican Republic also has some of this tainted alcohol. Whala resort did not have a mini-bar, which I wouldn't drink from normally anyway. Beverages are part of the all-inclusive. I am always careful of what I drink when traveling.

I go to the DR regularly and I can't fault it, lovely warm hospitable people. I've only stayed on the bavaro beach, vendors are on the beach to, a polite no is all it takes. And if you go looking for drugs and prostitutes you'll find them in any country. Especially in London where I am from.

I have stayed there and it is a nice place. The staff and management were nice and very accommodating. There was plenty of security day and night. Only patrons and confirmed guest were allowed on resort property. The beach is public property. So the hotel can't control who is on the beach. The beach was beautiful and I felt safe. Like the big cities and the beaches of the US and the rest of the world all kinds of people are out there. The food was slightly above average but edible. I plan to visit again.

As a hotel worker in the USA I am so happy and hopeful that this video got so many down votes. I hate guests that are just like this . Here are my reasons why.
1) they obviously went there to do a report knowing what type of town/ hotel this was
2) it is not the front desk agents or hotel workers job to know or to deliver the crime rates of an area or potential for crime or for ppl selling things especially on property that is outside of the hotel.
#3) hair does get into sheets - unfortunately it happens as anyone staying in a hotel knows that this room, sheets, and bed have been used many times before them by complete strangers (why I hate staying in hotels) , but most guests don’t want to be reminded of that fact. With that said she could have asked for new sheets, housekeeping, or a different room instead of being dramatic about how she was sleeping ergonomically incorrect and got no sleep.
# 4) this hotel , like many in DR, cater to Americans who do request and have a “ high” (pun intended) demand for drugs, prostitutes, and other non conservative things especially while on vacation. Was the reporter really mad that ppl in a poor country were asking if she wanted to buy a towel or a T-shirt or any thing that most tourist don’t want to get off their privileged fat asses for?
#5) do your research before you stay at a hotel/resort and don’t complain if you didn’t do your research when you get there. This hotel may not be ideal for many ppl but for many others they are probably now flocking here because of this report and this is the vacation they want. I work at a hotel with no pool and people get pissed and write reviews complaining and that there is no pool. Well you should have researched the place you are going to stay and if you don’t do not take it out on the workers who have a job to be happy for the next guest that comes right after the miserable guest who wants to blame the hotel for everything and take no responsibility for not educating themselves and booking somewhere that meets their needs. Many ppl complain because the price is so much better (lower)at your place but doesn’t have the amenities they wanted. They book on price alone (which is reflective of not having the same amenities as a higher costing hotel) and get mad, but you get what you pay for. There are hotel deals in off peak season, but during peak season don’t expect a low price and over the top service, they rarely go hand in hand.
#6) Groupon is not to blame and should not have been bullied into removing this property. Groupon sells things and there could have been many more factors as to the disparity in price for the same room. The guy paying less could have gotten a comp upgrade or he could have booked his room at a different time than the second room. Travel industry rates do fluctuate based on demand whether its air travel, hotels, rental cars, etc. Let’s just say the rooms were booked at the same exact time and they paid different amounts for the same room. Upon entering the room she could have made a simple inquiry to see why this happened. Don’t stay in a room if you are unhappy with it and dirty it up so housekeeping has more work to do. Let the hotel know right away so they can try to rectify the issue. Her snooty remark about the folded decorative towel on the bed being the reason for the disparity in fees was completely unnecessary. Maybe she should send her new husband there so he can get some time away from the new ball n chain

This "investigation" seems to be payed by the competion. Really, the D.R. is like most every other place; go to crappy places, that's where you'll find. There are many many great places to visit in the DR.
Anyone-including reporters-staying in a hotel without extensively reading reviews from multiple web sites deserves what they get. Everything you said was written in reviews which are posted online already. The are pictures posted by tourists that show how bad the area is. That resort probably is sustained by those who are looking for prostitution. There are lovely, clean resorts in the DR. They are in tourist areas. The result I stayed at had guards on the beach armed with machine guns. You can be sure no vendors went around bothering the guests. A lot of people do not want to be around tourists. They want to mingle with the locals, and that is exactly what you did. The first thing I do when I check into a hotel is check the bed. If the bed and room are not clean I go straight back to the desk, demand a refund and move on. You can’t complain about the night you spent in the bed because you could have easily moved on. As far as the rates go, it is very well known that the best rates are obtained directly through the hotel.

So, you are in super touristy place that has a certain reputation. Then, when approached you show interest and your colleague tells you "The two of you guys should go down there and find out what it costs."
So you go down there and find out what it costs. And that's scary?

Look, I understand that Americans are "shocked" that in the DR, where prostitution is legal, prostitutes are available. In plain daylight because you're in a place that's got a reputation for it.
But nobody's forcing you to take up any of these offers.
I've worked in Haiti as a humanitarian aid worker. Went to the DR twice for short vacations. The first time, I didn't have many days; I wanted to go to the beach but not spend too much time traveling to get into the quiet hinterland (I was traveling by bus because of travel restrictions by my organization). It was off-season and I went to Sosúa. I was aware that it also had a reputation for sex tourism. Guess what. I did see some girls but I wasn't forced to have sex with them. Once in a while, they approached me. I told them "no, thanks" or "I'm not interested". They let me in peace. I didn't treat them like shit, simply minded my business.
I've felt more bothered by vendors of other stuff.
I didn't like Sosúa too much, not because of the hookers but because it was too commercial even at off-season. But I don't complain because that's just the nature of the place. It wasn't horrible either, I just had to walk a little further to more quiet places.
The next time, I went to the Samaná peninsula which was gorgeous. It turned out that there was a new road that wasn't in my (apparently outdated) travel guide which had been lying around in one of the organization's expat houses.
I had expected to travel the entire day to get to the tip of Samaná but arrived several hours earlier. Had I known this, I would've gone there or a similar place the first time around instead of Sosúa.
Anyway, Samaná was amazing. Great people (I do speak Spanish which might help to get in touch with "normal" people instead of just salespeople looking for tourists), amazing nature.
The DR is like many places: you have "party zones", possibly with hookers available, for those who are interested in that. And other places for those who aren't.
Nothing wrong with the former. But don't go there and then complain about it.

This is old news. I have stayed twice at the Don Juan in the past with no issues. It is now called Whala and I just stayed July 30 to Aug 1, 2019. The police roam the beach and the resort was very clean and the staff were friendly. There are still vendors selling things, but they have to avoid the police. Things change over time, don't let this old 2013 article stop you from experiencing a great time.

@@kmcl11 People die all the time. Most deaths were the result of people drinking from the mini-bar. It was found in Costa Rica that there is tainted alcohol containing Methanol and it appears that the Dominican Republic also has some of this tainted alcohol. Whala resort did not have a mini-bar, which I wouldn't drink from normally anyway. Beverages are part of the all-inclusive. I am always careful of what I drink when traveling.
Lets not forget that in 1937 approximately 40,000 Blacks were massacred there due to their African features.
