Thanks for the review! All the products I design are just stuff I'm interested in. I wanted to do a take on an original Gameboy DMG horizontal as if it was really made in the early 90s. I try to always use the full size Pis as they were always more available and likely going to be easier to upgrade for say a pi5. Plus its more likely someone has a spare pi4 laying around.

1 year later, no, these arent worth it anymore unless you like to fiddle
now for under 100$ you can do all this and more in a much easier package that isnt Pi, just search for retro handheld and pick like anbernic or retroid or miyoo or powkiddy

My recommendation to people who can't get hands on a sbc and want some retro handheld gaming on the cheap, you can get a unused old Android phone you have laying around (or buy a second hand one for super cheap) and install some emulator on it and play your retro games. There are quite a few cheap controllers too that you can attach like the ones offered by ipega or game sir x2. Further more you can debloat your old phone and install something like lineage os to get some extra gaming performance.

Phones are crap for retro gaming. Sure, they have the power, but the form factor sucks, the screens are way too wide, so you either have massive black side bars, or you have artwork overlays made to fit the phone's resolution. You have to have separate controllers which need to be carried around with the phone, and Android sucks for retro gaming, with too much lag, and an OS that is designed for a phone.
These Piboy handhelds are based on the original DMG Gameboy, so the form-factor is perfect from the start. And, Retropie is perfect for retro games, with a great frontend, and lots of customization. A Pi 4, can handle everything upto N64 with ease, although N64 can be a bit hit and miss. Dreamcast is great, and most games run well.

Just did a price search, I can understand the price but they’re almost irrelevant now with all the emulation handhelds on the market today, just bought an Anbernic RG405v which is awesome for £35 less than the cheapest PiBoy XRS case.
That being said, I’d love one.

My raspberry pi handheld runs N64 with zero slowdown. Its fantastic. Sadly the battery has a fault. I need to take it apart , and order a new battery.

Not really worth it since android handheld are cheaper and are easy to setup than a raspberry pi,the only way i can see it worth it if there was a way to custom how games are loaded from because android lately hasnt been able to get access to sd cards
