  • Bill Caughie thought nothing of being exposed to asbestos when he worked in a shipyard in the 1980s. Asbestos was very common and widely used in construction because it was cheap and was a very effective fire retardant. At its peak in the 1970s and 80s, it was used for everything from insulation to fire blankets to toilet seats. It was also a deadly substance that caused widespread illness and suffering.
Forty years after he was exposed to asbestos at work, Bill was diagnosed with Mesothelioma Pleural, an aggressive and deadly form of cancer. Watch his story in this segment of Medical Stories.

Thank you so much for sharing this. My father has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma and the whole family is heartbroken. My dad sounds very much like your Bill - a wonderful man and an excellent father. The next few weeks and months will be so hard for us all and it’s scary. You are a wonderfully inspiring family. Best wishes to you. 🇬🇧

Mesothelioma took my Grandfather’s life. He was exposed at the shipyards in Seattle.

He passed 24 years ago. I think he was 85 or 86.
