This is one of my favorite Nightwish performances. It is very iconic. In addition, the parallel that is possible between the history of Nightwish and the story told by the musical is very interesting. Tarja would be Christine and Tuomas would be the Phantom. In the musical's history, the Phantom is in love with Christine. It is an unrequited and stormy love. In addition, the Phantom is heard through Christine when she sings his compositions. The story of Nightwish is marked by dramas and many say that Tuomas suffered from an unrequited love for Tarja. Tuomas used to say that Tarja was the voice that best expressed his feelings. The lyrics of songs in Tarja's day were often very confessional. Christine was the voice of the Phantom, while Tarja was the voice of Tuomas. In the musical, the Phantom disputes Cristine with Raoul. At Nightwish, Marcelo (Tarja's current husband) said that Tuomas disputed Tarja's love (read the answer he gave to question 36 of the fans). Nightwish's choice to cover The Phantom of the Opera, just the part where Christine and the Phantom sing together, seems to be a very interesting coincidence, or who knows, it might even be a choice made by the unconscious, if the situation is viewed from a psychoanalytic perspective.
This is the best Phantom of The Opera rendition of all time, on any genre or style. The voice harmonizing was impeccable, just perfect and the energy was off the scale.

I think in order to understand the band and it's fan base you have to know a bit about the band first, what drives it and the pure creative inspiration that is Nightwish. So, here's the skinny on what's been happening with Nightwish through the years, the decades. Floor is the third singer, believe it or not The Phantom of the Opera performance was Tarja's (the first singer's) last performance before the band had to let her go. The reason being that she never really felt like this was her path. Originally, when Nightwish was formed it was going to be more of a classical based band. Tuomas, the keyboardist, writer, and composer of ALL their music, noting Tarja's operatic training brought her into the fold and basically formed the band around her voice. Being that they were all good friends and growing up together, it was very hard for them when she started to drift away, missing the practices and started making statements about leaving the band. Some credit her being influenced by her businessman husband Marcelo Cabuli, who was incidentally overheard on numerous occasions making statements that "Tarja was the face of Nightwish" and that she "could do much better without the band". Floor was actually the 'fill in' singer back when Tarja started missing the practices. Then they hired Anette (the second singer) and she was with them for a time until the whole debacle at the Denver concert when they all got seriously sick and she had to be rushed to the emergency room... then she broke her ankle in a fall when she was pregnant. At that point Anette just wanted to heal, have her baby and be close to home. So they moved Floor to the position of lead singer. The song The Poet and The Pendulum, which was written and wholly composed by Tuomas, was all about the dark time around when they had to ask Tarja to leave. Tuomas and the band suffered depression over their feelings of betrayal, especially Tuomas who was affected the most, to the very point that the band, family, and friends were worried about him committing suicide. You can see in The Poet and The Pendulum that it's his journey working through that depression, those dark times. The Poet and The Pendulum was Tuoman's written suicide, instead of doing the actual act. The very last words of the song are about forgiveness, love and making a fresh start, "In the end I will always love you....The beginning". So very very hauntingly beautiful. IF you haven't seen it, you really need to. It's a heavy, dramatic song that some have a tendency, in their Nightwish journey, to watch too soon. IF you do get around to It, it's one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written. th-cam.com/video/gbn9GczYBkw/w-d-xo.html Also you will notice that the drummer Jukka Nevalainen was replaced by Kai Hahto due to Jukka having debilitating insomnia. Too, really you need to check out their Greatest Show On Earth performance. By this point they have also added a remarkable multi instrumentalist with Troy Donockley. As a warning, the song is roughly 21 minutes long but well well worth the watch: th-cam.com/video/aTAaEHiGjvU/w-d-xo.html There are many many songs where Marco (the bass guitarist) and Floor harmonize beautifully both of their amazing vocal ranges a compliment to each other. I've really enjoyed watching your Nightwish journey and hope that you do keep one sharing your reactions to them with all of us. It's always wonderful and amazing to me to see people's mind opening up to new music.
Dale Jenkinson they started back in 96 and they have tons of great music. The singer here ,Tarja (Tarya), is great but due to many disagreements between her and the band she was fired right after this performance, she was replaced by Annette Olson , a Swedish singer, kind of pop singer, I didn’t like her style. Then she got replaced back in 2012 by Floor Jansen, Dutch, she’s the current singer of Nightwish and she’s even more versatile than Tarja, both lyrically and in stage presence . Check his previous reaction to Ghost Love Score, you probably gonna love it, Btw the genre is called Symphonic Metal. Cheers
How is Floor more versatile than Tarja? That's the sales talk of Floor's fans, but I don't get it. Tarja had her first 3 albums sung in classical operatic style and last 2 albums in contemporary style. Floor has sung only contemporary style in Nightwish. I hear Floor could growl (never heard, dunno if she is any good in it) but Nightwish doesn't have any songs in that style. If Floor could nail them Nightwish operatic style songs, then you might have a point, but now... it's just a sales talk phrase.
Anette was in hard rock band before Nightwish, and the lead singer of a rock opera in Gothenburg. Yeah she has a background of all sort of music, was a cover band singer singe 13 years old. Anette sings now in metal band called The Dark Element. Her Wikipedia-page associates her with these genres: "alternative rock, folk rock, hard rock, melodic rock, classic rock, symphonic rock, symphonic metal, power metal, doom metal". No pop there. All her bands since Alyson Avenue have been metal or rock. Symphonic metal does have common with pop, In the Dark Element they do poppy metal, but I wouldn't call Anette a pop singer, especially when Tarja's fanbois used that label to attack Anette.
Ok,black man from LA,white woman from southern Appalachians here.Music is universal ,I love all kinds from bluegrass, heavy metal, soul, blues, opera, ect. You get the picture .Folks have so much more in common than not.God bless ya man! I love your reactions!
Im from South Central as well, Hoover & Vernon. I've been listening to Nightwish for almost 20 years and I discovered them by accident! Great band! My favorite album is Imaginaerum, where neither Floor (the first singer you rescted to), nor Tarja sing. I recommend Scaretale Live with Annette Olzon.

Dude I heard that Tarja Turunen left to go solo. Just not that way! After Tarja left, and they chose Annette Olsen I hated her because she dared to replace Tarja. A lot of people felt the same way. I even cringed as I watched her last performance and didn't realize it was the last time. I quit following them until Floor Jensen joined NW. I remembered her from another band and I loved her then. The rest is history. Tarja has her own band now. It's called just " Tarja" I would like to request you react to a "Within Temptation". I love Mother Earth song. Caged. The song that put them on the musical map was Ice Queen. Tarja and WT have made several songs together. My fave song they made together is What about us. IMHO Floor Jensen is a more modern version of Tarja. Tarja made the band NW famouser along with Toumos compositions. I hope no one hates me for the comparison. I'll shut up now LoL!!!!!!
Even though things ultimately didn't go so well with Annette (I wish her only the best!), Nightwish have been super blessed to have had first Tarja, and now Floor. It's like winning the lottery twice.
@@BamaGrammy She had it planned that she will do one album with them and then go solo, but band was decided that they don't want waste their time and energy with her any more and gave her letter that where they told her that she was fired and reason's why. then they published it online: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen

If you want to hear a recent song look at her cover Supremacy by Muse.. at Woodstock.. won't be disappointed. Other songs in Nightwish featuring Tarja are Over The Hills and Neo

I think you will enjoy a lot more from Nightwish. They don't impact you "just" in pure musicianship (all Bandmembers are incredibly good), thy are taking you on an Journey, they taking in mind, body, soul, emotions... There are a lot of heavier songs which will gives you a blast, but also more slower ones, packed full with so much emotions and beauty, I think it hurts sometimes. You are in for a very special ride. Enjoy it.
I've followed nightwish for a very long time. I absolutely love them. Another band also from Finland is Lordi. Check them out. Check out hard rock hallelujah, bloodred sand man, would you love a monsterman, or Who's your Daddy. I think you'll enjoy them a lot. Keep rockin the reviews.

Nightwish fans do not care where someone is from, what race they may be, what sex they are or anything. Just that Nightwish gets a proper listen and are shared with the world. We are all races from many countries and we all share a passion for the greatest band alive.
March 2021 and I somehow missed the Nightwish boat, and am just discovering them tonight...and I'm so happy that the trail of videos led me to your channel. But why the heck didn't I see this reaction before?!!!! I've followed you for a while!
What separates her from the other two NW leads is her vocals are so refined. Her phrasing, breathing, register changes, tonality, timbre, pitch control, sustained notes, etc...
Stop fronting..Tarja has a typical soprano classical trained voice..Nothing special about her voice or approach. You can hear the SAME voice in Any good Music University.
this just goes to show that we are all the same brothers and sisters under our skin listening and loving all musical genres and the only thing that separates us are our attitudes towards each other largely shaped by our self-centered leaders...i am a long-standing Tarja-holic but appreciate all forms of musical expression...peace my brother
According to Tarja's interview, in the morning practices she was so ill she couldn't sing and was worried about the evening. I prefer Tampere 2000 Pakkahuone concert over this one though. And Summer Breeze festival 2002. Those have more Tarja's operatic period songs (in which she imho is better than contemporary style singing).
BTW Jamel, your Led Zeppelin Cycle is still incomplete without reacting to their greatest song "Kashmir". If you do it please take the live version from "Celebration day 2007". Thank you
Thanks for the reaction You got it right. Tarja is finnish, and you can replace the j with y to pronounce her name correctly - Tarya. That is enough information to not butcher finnish words or names, but if you want to be authentic, finnish language uses rolling r's. Also, every letter matches one sound, each are pronounced, and the letter repeats if it needs to be prolonged - like when she says "kiitos" (thank you) in the end, the i stays longer.
amen brother. you have the right attitude. no matter from where we hail an open mind and heart is what we need more of in this country. metal bands generally recruit the most powerful vocalists, this being no exception. i urge to check out Russel Allen from Symphony x , Tommy Karevik from kamelot or Yama-B from Galneryus, just to name a few. Floor Jensen is very goo indeed, but Tarja is super.. check out her version of the Sleeping Sun or Nemo. it will touch your soul. wish you all the best in your travels across the metal universe. i have been doing so for nearly 40 years and there still much to cover,
Thank you for doing this! Epic. If you want to keep being blown away, check out 2 more covers from Nightwish: Marco (the bass player) and Floor singing Ave Maria, and High Hopes (a Pink Floyd cover). You will be amazed!
1 other thing to consider try a back to back with Floor and Tarja performing the same track Sleeping Sun.. Tampere 2015 and End of an Era 2005.. also.. theres a live vid from 2013 of Tarja and Floor together performing "Over the hills and far away"
For Tarja it should be of course the 1999 version of the song (the original version). The 2005 version was made for the music video and imho was poorly rearranged. Sleeping Sun 1999 version Summer Breeze festival 2002 th-cam.com/video/KDbE8dWY4n0/w-d-xo.html
You should look up Marco Hietala - While Your Lips Are Still Red Marco doing a solo vocal song, not an official Nightwish song but if you loved his eyes and voice in this song, you'll certainly love that one!
The Original Phantom was the battle between an evil Svengali who controls a beautiful woman with a wonderful voice. He takes over her soul by forcing her to sing HIS way. But this is her rebellion.
I hope you can read this, I'd like to see you react to more Nightwish like Passion and the Opera, Moondance, Kinslayer, Nemo and Dark Chest of Wonders. I love your reaction to them. 😊
I bought my husband 2 tickets to The Phantom of The Opera for his birthday. He opened the card and saw the tickets and said “you got me tickets to the opera, why, I don’t like opera”. I told him it was not what he was thinking it was going to be and he reluctantly went despite complaining for a month. The opera started and and his mouth fell to the floor and then during the intermission he bought the music, poster & any other trinkets they sold. I said to him that he needed to trust me more as i would not lead him astray. We have listened to that CD for 25 years.
Do you wanna know why i love your videos? Of course its because of the music, but mostly because i can feel the love you have for any kind of music. As long as its Music and not crap. Love ur vids man
Check out the recent live "The Greatest Show on Earth" performance by Nightwish. It is with Floor Jansen. It is a truly epic show. I don't know that I've ever seen a performance so epic from ANYONE, ANYWHERE.
You are correct dude - it is pronounced TARR-YA - so glad you enjoyed this beyond epic cover of this track! I adore their current singer Floor Jansen, but I still got to get my fix of Tarja’s silky pipes every once in a while...
If I'm not mistaken, The Phantom of the Opera was the first Broadway musical to have a video on Mtv. This song but preformed by the original cast from Broadway.

@@TheWolvesCurse I didn't notice it. Even with that being said, I enjoyed all the instruments and both Marco and Tarja singing. It was performed quite well indeed. But I did appreciate the feedback Nikola. I also enjoy playing this song on the piano.
Again, great reaction. The Phantom of the Opera is here inside my mind. And also in my "End of an Era" DVD collection. What a classic!
Tarja’s voice always reaches my soul
first time I have even heard of this group man she got the pipes ! is this opera rock ? they kill it
Dale Jenkinson they started back in 96 and they have tons of great music. Check his previous reaction to Ghost Love Score, you probably gonna love it,
Btw the genre is called Symphonic Metal.
Cheers
@@cooltechnician I did watch both videos and there is definitely a difference in styles.
Nightwish -Greatest Show on Earth!
Open up ur ears, mind and heart.. you said everything! Beautiful reaction! By the way, I'm white woman from Brazil... who cares about color or where we were born... we are connect to each other trough the heart and that's the power of the music. We are all humans and that's it! Thaks for the video.
Tarja is why I was drawn to Nightwish and is my favourite of the 3 ladies. Check her out singing Ghost Love Score.
See that show if you can. It gives you chills.
this was her last show, but she didn't know that.
My understanding was that she was already on her way out, planning to go solo very soon after this.
She growls too.
I love your personality and you're a super cool guy!!
Great music indeed! I'm happy you like this fennomenal band! Hope you'll go for more Nightwish, you'll never regret it! Peace!
So...A Tarja video, I am waiting for you to attack everyone else who brought up Floor and talked about preferring her etc...calling them hateful like you have been stalking and targeting me. Demonstrate that you're true to your word and not a hypocrite.
@@FemaleMetalLover And I'm waiting for you to grow up and resolve your anger problems. Think more at the consequences of your actions.
@@gabriel.bardac And there's the receipt. And for your mind, you started this, might want to self-reflect before you make claims on others.
@@FemaleMetalLover You're that kind of "fan" capable to ask for Tarja's autograph from the band, at the next concert. Lack of common sense.
Then follow me everywhere with your hate, if that's your level. I still consider you hurt the band with your irresponsible attitude.
@@gabriel.bardac Keep dodging the argument. Anyway, there's an easy way to resolve this if you want to put an end to this.
Good for you man. Listen to all the music you can. It can really broaden your horizons. Also, I freakin love Nightwish and I hope I get to see them one day. Hey Nightwish! Come to Florida!
Tarja's voice is always made my eyes watered, brother. Hail! from Malaysia 🤘🤘
Great video! Love to see some nightwish!!
And Nightwish - The poet and the pendulum | LIVE AT WEBMLEY 2016 really should be next :)
I remember when this performance happened around 2001, long before any video streaming services existed. We were all passing this thing around on CDs!
Her name is Tarja (pronounced Tar-ya) Turunen who is a classically trained lyric soprano (3-octave voice range)... she was the first front woman.
If you want to hear a recent song look at her cover Supremacy by Muse.. at Woodstock.. won't be disappointed.
Other songs in Nightwish featuring Tarja are Over The Hills and Neo
Holy shitoly! Amazing. I've never heard of Nightwish. Phantom feels more like a rock concert when you're there watching it, so this fits. Thank you
you should check out more of Tarja..she is a vocal freight train... th-cam.com/video/dVXCdntmI04/w-d-xo.html
yes her name pronunciation is Tarya, she was the 1st singer, in other video Ghost love score the 3rd and current vocalist Floor. Please react to "Song of myself" and "Romanticide" (live Waken 2013). Dude with beard is Marko, check his solo songs "While your lips are still red" (live Waken 2013) and "The Islander" (at Wembley)
I just want to give you a huge hug, due to seeing how emotional you got.
OH SNAPPPP!!! that was bada**!! i haven't heard phantom in 20 years ... i saw it live 30+ years ago omg... goosebumps in 3 seconds. !!
Enjoy it.
I salute u from Finland. Great work and thank u sir!
great music from finland, salute from guatemala!!
I've followed nightwish for a very long time. I absolutely love them. Another band also from Finland is Lordi. Check them out. Check out hard rock hallelujah, bloodred sand man, would you love a monsterman, or Who's your Daddy.
I think you'll enjoy them a lot.
Keep rockin the reviews.
excelent your reaction, i was the same furst time i heard it, and every time ever since, totally amazing, this song ,the music, the singers everything, totally amazing, this song and the performance has it all,
Helvegen Live by Wardruna...you will be AMAZED!! Love your reactions!! :)
Thank you for great reactions to both singers : ) . I hope you will continue on your Nightwish journey. next up "Romanticide" from Wacken13 please
They are selling out stadiums pretty much everywhere else in the world except the US for some reason. :P
They dont know power metal, an European thing.
Her phrasing, breathing, register changes, tonality, timbre, pitch control, sustained notes, etc...
amen she has such rich timbre. astounding
Stop fronting..Tarja has a typical soprano classical trained voice..Nothing special about her voice or approach. You can hear the SAME voice in Any good Music University.
Best performance of this song you can find! Tarja was fantastic but their current singer is beyond amazing 🤘
Is there live performance of floor singing this song?
@@marbanivet th-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/w-d-xo.html there you go!
You got it my man. Pronounced Tarya. Music has no color barrier. We all just love music especially seeing somebody new to Nightwish take it all in!
Planet Hell with Tarja from this show and Dark Chest Of Wonders with Floor Live Wacken 2013
YES! :D
Open up your ears, open up your mind, open up your heart!
You need to make t-shirts brotha!!!
Great quote indeed.
Second to that.
Thank you for suggesting.
I seldom go for these - but this is a message worth materializing on a shirt.
this just goes to show that we are all the same brothers and sisters under our skin listening and loving all musical genres and the only thing that separates us are our attitudes towards each other largely shaped by our self-centered leaders...i am a long-standing Tarja-holic but appreciate all forms of musical expression...peace my brother
And she had the flu during this performance >.>. She's just a beast.
😳
According to Tarja's interview, in the morning practices she was so ill she couldn't sing and was worried about the evening.
I prefer Tampere 2000 Pakkahuone concert over this one though. And Summer Breeze festival 2002. Those have more Tarja's operatic period songs (in which she imho is better than contemporary style singing).
@@Aurinkohirvi her voice was deeper, richer and darker then.....stupendous
BTW Jamel, your Led Zeppelin Cycle is still incomplete without reacting to their greatest song "Kashmir". If you do it please take the live version from "Celebration day 2007". Thank you
Brother, your face when she starts and in the middle... priceless!!
Thanks for the reaction
You got it right.
I think the word is "trill" in the R.
They got you now. And there's more to discover.
amen brother. you have the right attitude. no matter from where we hail an open mind and heart is what we need more of in this country. metal bands generally recruit the most powerful vocalists, this being no exception. i urge to check out Russel Allen from Symphony x , Tommy Karevik from kamelot or Yama-B from
Galneryus, just to name a few. Floor Jensen is very goo indeed, but Tarja is super.. check out her version of the Sleeping Sun or Nemo. it will touch your soul. wish you all the best in your travels across the metal universe. i have been doing so for nearly 40 years and there still much to cover,
I love watching how people react to This amazing song
Nightwish 'Slayer the dreamer' End of an era liveeeee
Thank you for doing this! Epic. If you want to keep being blown away, check out 2 more covers from Nightwish: Marco (the bass player) and Floor singing Ave Maria, and High Hopes (a Pink Floyd cover). You will be amazed!
Open up your ears, be ready for the happy tears :) Thanks for great reaction, greetings from Finland!
IT'S CALLED SYMPHONIC ROCK.........AND THE SINGER TARJA TURUNEN ITS THE BEST INTERPRETER DOING THIS GENRE......
Nightwish - Wish I Had An Angel
1 other thing to consider
try a back to back with Floor and Tarja performing the same track
Sleeping Sun..
Genial, también las canciones de Tarja como solista son geniales, Boy and the Ghost , I walk alone, Die Alive, Saludosl
Great Reaction. Please react to Nightwish Slaying the Dreamer, Wishmaster and Planet Hell from the DVD End of an Era
thanks for this reaction,, Nightwish is very good .. 8-)
Tarja has out of this world pipes. When she hits those last notes my soul just leaves my goddamn body lmao.
You should look up Marco Hietala - While Your Lips Are Still Red
Marco doing a solo vocal song, not an official Nightwish song but if you loved his eyes and voice in this song, you'll certainly love that one!
This is a cover from the musical of the same name, btw.
You are on the Nightwish train now brother!!
You are correct dude - it is pronounced TARR-YA - so glad you enjoyed this beyond epic cover of this track! I adore their current singer Floor Jansen, but I still got to get my fix of Tarja’s silky pipes every once in a while...
The incomparable Tarja Turunen Love her.
If I'm not mistaken, The Phantom of the Opera was the first Broadway musical to have a video on Mtv. This song but preformed by the original cast from Broadway.
Pronounced Tar-ya Tu-ru-nen,- you´re doing fine.:)
Glad to experience your open mindedness to music styles you´ve probably never heard before.
You´re likely to be bombarded with Nightwish request as I can feel the Nightwish Army incoming so here´s something a little different but equally amazing to whet you appetite during your wait:
Next: Jinjer-Pisces-Live Session followed by Amon Amarth- Guardians Of Asgaard - Live at Summer Breeze,- finish with Eluveitie - Rebirth.- just to get you started.

Great reaction. Thank you.
...and tis is jsut the beginning of your journey, if you want to. There is so much more Nightwish to enjoy. ;-)
Welcome to the wonderful world of symphonic metal.
