In the series, they showed the development of this character well
I like it most when she starts to experience positive feelings, friendship and something like love towards Willow
I love that even though TOH crew didn't have a lot of time because of the shortening of the show, they still make Hunter's change realistic. He slowly opens, still have a trust issue, deal with trauma and is very carefull. Even though Willow and Gus proved him they're great friends,he still worry about losing their trust.

Having Hunter become friends with Willow and Gus with ZERO intervention from Luz was the best thing they could have done.
IMO it was a pretty clever choice.
It kinda breaks the rule that everything depends of MC actions :D
It helps develop other characters than Luz,Eda,King.
It makes other characters usefull and intresting.
It changes the dynamics in the group.
It helps to put Hunter's arc into important place in the story. He kinda became the second MC in some of those episodes :)
What's more - Luz and Hunter are like lenses,which helps us to see the world around them from the completely different angle.
I mean.. I wouldn't say it was the BEST thing they could've done (it was more of a narrative compromise than anyhting else). Willow and Gus getting more screentime is all well and good, but toward the end of the season, it felt like too much of Hunter's major development (moments that should've belonged to him, where he had time to properly address his issues on his own) were overshadowed by other characters.
It'd be like if Sasha (from Amphibia) _always_ had to share her episodes with Anne or the Plantars, and never got the chance to form her own friend group. At the end of the day, it was her realizing her mistakes and forming new convictions on her own that made her arc so powerful. If her development had to rely on Anne and the Plantars as a narrative crutch, it'd severely damage her agency and potential to become a character who can stand on equal footing with Anne (or Marcy, to a lesser extent).
Ideally, I think it would've been cooler if Hunter developed his own friend group completely independent from Luz and her literal best friends. Imagine if, over the course of an alternate season 2 (and 3, perhaps), we saw him gradually build stronger rapports with the characters he already has YEARS of history with. For example, we could've seen him reconcile with Lilith and Kikimora, or strengthen his existing rapports with Steve, Darius, and perhaps even Raine. In fact, ignoring all the ships, I actually think seeing him befriend the Blight Twins (who are his age) instead of Willow and Gus, would've been a step in that direction.

@@DLxxx I don't think I agree with the Sasha comparison, Hunter developing thanks to Willow and Gus made all of them feel like complete characters independent of Luz. I don't think creating a new friend group for Hunter would've helped (not to mention then they would've had to tie this new friend group with Luz and the resistance).
Also, I don't see how him befriending Lilith would've been better, and Kikimora is just off the table for obvious reasons. I straight up hope they don't redeem her because her being a despicable little gremlin is a huge part of her character, she has not regards for anyone other than herself and the only reason she ever does anything that's "right" is because of her own selfishness.
Damn, his mentality being raised by Belos is so... heartbreaking. Like "everyone has a use, and if you don't... Byebye!". That truly fits Belos, he simply uses people and throws them away when they're no longer useful, and Hunter has that engraved in his head, that he's just there for serving and, if he doesn't, he's out. Also, I think the "literally digging his own grave" is the closest we can get to a suicidal character in these kind of shows, in my opinion, and it suits him.

Imo, something close we got to a suicidal character in TOH is when in season 3 episode 1, thanks to them, Luz is talking about how "hero? If his friends and family knew his plan they would have never helped him, * something else * and it would be better if he never existed!!" As Luz is self-projecting onto the character which shows she thinks everything would be better if she never existed. That's just my opinion though and my perspective, everyone is entitled to their own opinion🤍🤍🤍

Also, this hits even harder considering Hunter technically tried to sacrifice himself to end Belos in the 1 episode of the 3rd season, when he trew the Titan's blood on the water and drowned himself

This is how you produce good character development. Hunter has always been my favorite and from the first time seeing him, he has shown promise that he would be a character that wants to do right, but his youth and upbringing made him oblivious to the true nature behind Belos' evil. From then on, his connections with Flapjack, Gus, Willow, and Darius taught him to rebel and be surrounded by those who care about him while giving Hunter people to connect with.

@@bella_daze3092 Yep, but I can't feel like his character arc has felt rush, theirs just too much potential lost, and the fanfics prove that . Yeah I'am not expecting him to be Zuko or anything, but I thought he would have been more menacing, or protective. He got them B i g B r o t h e r vibes to the whole hexside squad. Especially with his awkwardness. Honestly I just feel like the writers kind of did a *Big Brain Move* and teamed Hunter up with the Hexside squad so more of Luz's friends can appear in the mix, but other then that, I don't really see his part in the show. I'am just hoping maybe he can help with Luz's "People Pleaser, and I blame myself for everything" mind set since he quite literally worked with the Emperor as his right hand.
Seeing the "Grimwalker and Luz helping Phillip" threat, and the differences between Hunter and Luz in Dana Terrace "What Now" spoiler art, gives me hope that maybe his character can be fleshed out and be a huge part of the plot
Not saying Hunter is the only character that is not fleshed out, literally the whole Hexside squad and Emerald Entrails Characters are great characters written in good dept, just not played into part.
@@mubassirzaman7202 While obviously they had to cut short a lot of things because of Season 3, I don't think Hunter would've ever been as menacing as some people wanted him to be. At his core, Hunter is just an awkward teenager trying to be cool, but also he's just a tool created by Belos, he never had any real power or purpose beyond being Belos' plaything.

I love the color of his magic. It changed from the red with the artificial staff to golden with flapjack. Suits him well as red is an aggressive color and yellow is very peaceful. At least in my opinion. Please don’t feed me to the skin eating fairies

Yellow is Belos' color 😬 just look at the draining spell and the palace and the literally golden guards. Red is kinda Eda's color.
I truly believe that Willow would have let him walk away if he hadn't used the exact phrase he did, "half a witch." It's an important phrase to her and it showed her the mindset of who she was dealing with, and that he thought so little of himself.
Since she’s always been called “half a witch willow” she completely understood how hunter was feeling. Love it
true, although we already have two couples with whom the question of "how did you meet mom" will be uncomfortable, (Amity almost had Luz disembowelled for a miserable cardboard star, and Willow tied Hunter with vines xD)

It’s never easy breaking away from abuse and manipulation, Hunter showed you can and that you can make more meaningful bonds along the way surrounding yourself with people that love you unconditionally

Hunter clearly got his moral standards from Philip Wittebane's brother, Caleb Wittebane.
Clearly, Flapjack used to be Caleb Wittebane's palisman before his evil brother Philip Wittebane murdered him for falling in love with a female witch and Flapjack probably received that scar on his left eye from Philip Wittebane.
"Any Sport in a Storm" and "Labyrinth Runners" are some of my favorite episodes because they focus on Hunter and his relationship with the secondary characters instead of focusing on the main characters.
The question I have is. Was Flapjack calebs or was he evelyns?

Tl:dr it’s only the last 2 episodes of S2 and the first 2 specials of S3 where they count as the “main 5.”
Luz, Eda, and King rank highest as main characters, even though obviously they don’t have many episodes teamed up.
Willow and Gus were major characters in S1 before Amity took over for them in S2, demoting them to secondaries.
Hunter was rare, but heavily relevant like Lilith.

His character development really is amazing, it's hard to believe he's the same sassy antagonist under the golden guard mask we saw in the beginning of season 2. I love him

I love the implication that they were gonna do a bait and switch, making it seem like Hunter was gonna be a love interest for Luz. Luz sees Hunter's revealed face in the crash and we see how intrigued she is, like she leans in for a closer examine. So the audience is all like "Oh shit, oh no, please god don't be another unnecessary love triangle, Luz already has Amity, IS SHE GONNA KISS HIM OR SLIGHTLY BLUSH??-"
Then that kid fuckin slaps Hunter in the face and it's the biggest wave of relief ever

It's amazing how he's he starts as a bad guy because of Belos but because of the influences of Luz, Amity, Gus and Willow, he becomes a hero, redeeming himself.

@@dysphanic_redshift Even without the mask, his voice sounded deeper in Hunting Palisman and Eclipse Lake. It only really started getting weird around the time of Any Sport in A Storm.
The voice actor changed hunters voice when he saw what he looked like. When he was the golden guard zeno (voice actor) gave him that confident, older sounding voice but in an interview zeno said that he slightly changed hunter's voice.. (gave him a slight lisp and whatnot)
I feel that it was probably because of the lack of interactions he was getting with people his age. He was the golden guard, this figure behind a mask that not many people knew and he probably felt the need to sound older because he was constantly around mature adults all his life. Once he started hanging out with willow and gus and their friends, he felt more like a kid, and didn’t try to hide or “mask” himself as much anymore.
@@annal827 But.. _why_ would he even know how to act like a kid in the first place? He spent his entire life growing up around adults, was trained to be a soldier at an extremely young age, and had responsibilities that required him to be more mature on top of everything. And while Hunter admits to never hanging out with witches his age, he never really expressed interest in doing so either.
What I'm saying is, there wouldn't _be_ a mask to maintain, because that's just the person he would've grown up to be. He wouldn't be constantly thinking about sounding older and mature after all those years, it would just be a habit.
It's ironic that Hunter was able to realize the "Willow Park" he and Gus encountered in the school hallways is actually an imposter hiding behind an illusion because Gus has known Willow Park much longer than Hunter has since Hunter met Willow only once. Severine's uncharacteristic portrayal as Willow by portraying her as a scared little girl is what made Hunter realize the "Willow" he and Gus encountered in the school hallways wasn't the actual Willow Park because Hunter knows that the real Willow Park isn't a scared little girl and that she would never be afraid of Hunter. Hunter pointing that out to Gus is what made Gus realize Hunter's correct about the "Willow" they recently encountered in the school hallways isn't the actual Willow Park and Gus even berated himself for being incapable of telling Willow apart from an illusion when he was being held captive by Adrian Graye Vernworth and two unnamed Coven Scouts in the gymnasium.

Dudes he meant that apology at 18:58, he knows how hard it is to be a guard. He knows about getting beat up just for doing your job as a scout and if you fail at doing your job you'll be replaced or punished or something. He knows about the training that guard went through (mazes with traps and getting put on a mountain to see who comes back alive) just to get shoved aside.

labrinth runners is a close second on my favorite episodes list (after hunting palismen when we meet hunter) because of the sheer amount of development in his character also his relationship with gus, which has to be one of my favorite relationships in the show.
I thought I was the only one who considered Hunter and Gus to have one of the best platonic relationships in the show. Their chemistry is just really good ^^

I like to know of the symbolism of Hunters’ palismen, Flapjack and how it relates to him.
Well, if you have seen the season 2, you should have know it.
If not, then I dont wanna spoil it.
Anyways, Flapjack is the palismen supposedly of the brother of Belos. Belos supposedly kill him. To get rid of guilt or the loneliness or any reason, Belos started making Grimwalkers which kinda resembles his brother. Hunter is one of the Grimwalkers. (Actually Grimwalkers usually betray Belos and Belos destroy them after they betray just to make a new one, until Luz show up and boom boom goes Belos.)

When first watching the show, I had first thought Belos was Phillip and I was just waiting for the reveal or more evidence to show because it just seemed like an obvious plot twist to me but with the introduction of Hunter and him addressing Belos as his Uncle and talking about his family, I thought my theory was proven wrong because of the assumed family relationship with Belos and if Belos was a human and Hunter was his nephew, that would mean that Phillip's sibling had to have come into the witch world as well and at the time, it only mentioned Phillip being the only human that has entered before Luz. So I had to be wrong, I thought.
I was just absolutely in love with how Hunter through me and probably a lot of people off to have Belos's plottwist of him being Phillip much more interesting because not only was it. "HE'S PHILLIP?!" It was also, "I KNEW IT!!". And, I love how they really used Hunter for the story and gave him his own background, character development and really allowed us to fall in love with him as a character instead of just using him to further show Belos's power and how he can get people to mindlessly follow him and to hide us from the plot twist about Phillip.
(Also note: I know Hunter calling Belos, "Uncle" doesn't mean an automatic family relationship because you can call someone Uncle, Aunt, cousin, etc and not have a family relationship with them. When I heard it, I assumed it was a family relationship and wasn't thinking a close bond between people because due to Hunter's position of following Belos.)
One thing I found odd in the episode where they went into the emperors mind was the first golden guard having the same voice actor as Hunter, I just now realized that was entirely on purpose and I’m an idiot💀
He’s honestly one of my favorite character arcs since Zuko in ATLA. He’s an abuse victim who just wanted his father figure to love him or at the very least acknowledge his existence, but Belos is a genuine monster who will never care about Hunter. Despite not getting nearly the same amount of screentime as characters with similar arcs, I genuinely believe he’s changed completely by the end because the narrative is so strong.
I love, for example, how he befriends characters like Willow and Gus without anyone else’s intervention. His changes are all from his own choices, and that’s awesome to see. And seeing him go from fighting for something he’ll never have and constantly feeling inadequate to being happy and breaking free from Belos’ influence is so rewarding to watch.
I mean, I’m also super biased because I am obsessed with angry pretty boys/ bastards with hearts of gold. I sometimes feel like Dana Terrace did that mind invasion spell on me to make him lol.

Wait, "take in"? What does Hunter even remember? That "take in" implies he thinks he had a life before working with Belos. Or maybe he was fed up a lie and was made so young that he could have had the whole child amnesia thing and think that'd be the reason he thinks he doesn't remember some parents or early childhood, and Belos would fed him that lie with no problem. But that "take in" has always sounded as if he had a previous life and Belos found him. It's a bit odd, maybe it was made to hide his actual origins from the audience.

BUT knowing how Belos is known for someone who's manipulative enough to lie a whole more than 4-5 generations and rule over them with the weakest lie of all, i deeply believe even he would've lied to Hunter to how he "found and took him in"
Like maybe putting Hunter to sleep in the middle of nowhere and when he woke up he didn't know or remember anything and then Belos "finds him" and offers him a "helping" hand.
Or maybe just like telling him the story (but a poor version) ab how his misterious brother was killed bc of wild magic or maybe "fighting against it" or bc getting envolved with it

That's right, in addition to the fact that the darling has the right to receive a redemption arc on a platter and still almost takes over the main plot of the show, he even overshadows the other main characters on purpose to have the "deserved" prominence just to make clear the scriptwriters' favoritism

bunch of recent comments calling him weak or a joke. weird as hell. he's a child (y'all forget he's 16) that's been abused and used his whole life and the whole foundation of everything he's ever known has been shaken all in one season. he thought he was helping for a good cause when in reality he was aiding a tyrant set to destroy their world. I think he's reacting to trauma realistically. it can shut you down completely when facing it head on. I think he's still strong, but he's been meant to believe he's not cause he went against his abuser. and abusers will make you feel weak to the point where you start believing it and showcasing that physically. in hunter's case: being told he has big plans, to feeling like he'd be tossed aside if he didn't bring anything to the table, to literally finding out the things belos has done to the previous golden guards after going against him (the abuser). s2 never ends with hunter actually confronting belos. even in their last moment in king's tide, hunter froze when belos showed his actual face and asked him, "why are you hurting me?" I see a lot of flack for how they handled Hunter in the s3 special, but I think it was realistic. it shows that hunter merely removed himself from the abusive environment, but never dealt with it. (though I'm so glad he had those moments. he finally got to feel like a kid his age, and have INTERESTS that weren't about being a pawn in the emperor's coven.) we knew belos would follow them into the human realm so idk why people were so shocked with what happened. it gave hunter an opportunity to actually stand up to belos and that says a lot. recovery from an abusive relationship (familial, platonic etc) is not linear. you'll take 2 steps forward and maybe 4 steps back. I feel like we still have to give him time. and be a lil more understanding cause of the whole cancellation situation. I bet they're doing their best to crunch as much as they can into these specials. maybe the flapjack thing was pushing it tho, I agree with that cause like poor boy :(.

@@NotSoStraight yw! majority of toh's characters are really well written (imo) for a show that's trying to get as much done with what little they've been given :(. and hunter has grown to become a long lasting favorite of mine that I feel like I have to defend him by showing how amazing he is through my, a fan's, perspective! 💗

This is really useful to recap after the newest episode of season 3
Hunter sure has come a long way since his debut in season 2. Starting off as just the golden guard to later becoming an allie to the hex squard gang, learning his original, getting his own palisman (rip flapjack) and hopefully a possible girlfriend in the form of willow. Kudos to the writers for making his story very interesting and can't wait to see how it ends in the toh finale on April 8th.

14:04-14:08 Just wanted to draw attention to this little moment right here, which is one of my favorite hunter moments of the whole show. It seems so simple, but his worried expression paired with “she’s..not with the owl lady?” speaks so many volumes about his character growth up until that point. The poor boy is an isolated cult and abuse victim and child soldier with only one connection (belos) in his entire 16-17 years of life and that is an absolute lie. Growing up in this environment has taught him not to care about other people, let alone kids like him who would have no purpose to someone like belos, and as such actually making connections with people is something hunter tragically and comedically stubbornly refuses throughout the owl house. He feels unsure about how to respond to Luz’s attempts at compassion in hunting palismen, and although hunter does give her some semblance of a connection (his name), he does so after nearly attacking her after the palismen, and at the end of it all he still lets her fly away with no guarantee they’ll see each other again. He outright refuses amity’s outstretched hand of friendship in favor of belos’ mission in eclipse lake. He nearly tricks the flyer derby team into getting coven sigils in any sport in a storm, and although he does stand up in their defense, his way of doing so is to tell willow and the others to get as far away as possible. For the entirety of the show hunter has denied any attempts at friendship or connection. I wouldn’t say that hunter is, in this scene, completely ready to have true friends yet - I’d say that he becomes ready and gains his bond with gus and willow in between labyrinth runners and clouds on the horizon - but with this one sentence he is showing to the audience that he at least cares enough about Luz to begin to have such a connection. And that is a *huge* step in his character development. The whole scene with Gus so far hunter has been trying to retain some remainder of his gruff ‘golden guard’ exterior (the annoyed glances from 13:49 to 14:01 and the crossed arms display this ‘don’t mess with me’ look) as a way to both ward off Gus and process his own insecurities as hunter is the lowest he has ever been in this scene, but all off this comes off *immediately* when Luz might be in trouble. Hunter’s eyes, which have been stuck in an angry glare for most of this conversation, suddenly widen in fear and worry (edit: talking about this moment right here! 14:07). Despite having faced away from Gus this whole scene as a way to close himself off and feel distant, hunter turns directly to Gus, all of these insecurities forgotten for a brief moment. It shows that hunter does actually care about someone, something he’s denied himself for so long. Wow I love this show.
