a small tip when replacing the window wipers don't leave the metal arm up. If for some reason it wants to go back it cracks the window (don't ask how I know that)

just saying those Halfords tools aren't half bad. I have spoken to quite a few mechanics and they say they are more durable than snap-on and the fact that they are so easily replaceable is a win for most.

    • @rossy12100

Lifetime warranty with the halfords advance series, for a home mechanic like myself price to performance is second to none, top notch tools as far as im concenerned

The only problem with Halfords tools is the stigma of the name.

I worked for Halfords when they were owned by Boots (used to be an amazing discount for both companies back then) through the time that they sold out to CVC and stitch everyone over. There was great pride with the staff over the products we sold and the service we gave (It was an awesome branch, twice given flagship status and refurbs in 5 years).
The guarantee on the tools in that time was only used perhaps only dozen times. The tools seldom broke, and if they did it was usually after heavy abuse - pipe used on breaker bars for example. We had a policy of no quibble unless there was absolutely undeniable abuse or fraud.

    • @Will-gd9dx
      @Will-gd9dx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

halfords tools are really good for the home gamer, only broken a socket once but those mechanics that say they are more durable than snap on are talking out of their ass and more than likely trying to convince themselves that their halfords stuff is better than snap on because they can't afford it.
Not bashing people that can't afford it but dont try and convince yourself and others that they are more durable when they aren't.
If you've used halfords on a daily basis and then switched to a few snap on bits you'd know what im talking about.

You do right doing regular services, look after your van and it will look after you! I drop the oil & filter on my vans every 5,000, and air & diesel, every 10,000. I’m sure it would be fine doing it half as regular, but can’t get out of the habit now for what it costs 👍

Joe Adamson 10k km is the best interval imo! At that interval with winters in Finland you can start to feel a signifacant change in the viscosity! At 6000-8000km it is still ok in my opinion.. VW long life is what like 30k?? Way too much when the temperatures go in the negatives probably fine for +20-30 year round.

Well, I would probably drop the oil pan and take a look at the main bearings... and it might need a new clutch sometimes soon - since it's been driven in stop and go traffic the whole life. I would also inspect the oil for metal particles and have a look at blowby since the piston rings might be worn out.

Yes I have been there, & used it after it was featured on 5th Gear. It was cool, painted, & decorated, very clean, & fresh at the time. It had not been open long, & was hoping to attract more customers in, & fill the spaces.

This place was filmed & featured on 5th Gear many years ago Tim Shaw presented it, & it was completely only for self service hire. He took an early Volvo V40 in & did a service, & brake work on it.
Over the years it has changed. It was very clean, & had a pit stop theme to it with painted floors which looked like a race track etc.
Now the part opposite where Tom was working on a four poster ramp has people running seperate business's within the main garage, with their own two poster ramps, & spaces.
That side used to be just floor area divided up with trolley jacks, & axle stands for hire customers to use.

Excellent work. I’ve got the same van and I want to do my own service next time. Mine’s 8 years old and I work local, I’ve only done 60,000 miles. I get it serviced every 2 years as recommended by Renault. Just had a service and all they did was oil and oil filter! Nothing else. Then checked what they did 2 years ago and no fuel, pollen or air filter were changed. So 4 years with those filters, I changed them myself, they were all black, Thomas’s last video of van service helped.

There's a few self service places up and down the UK, cheapest I know of is £70 a day so a London ramp for £60 a day is a good deal. My only thing is that the ramps you used are all 4 wheels on the deck types with no way of lifting the wheels off if you need to do something like change a ball joint. Even so, that price per DAY is about an hours worth at a dealer garage.

    • @wdt-alarms-ltd

I would assume as a four post lift is safer for people who have MAY never worked in a workshop this may be the main reason, Also as i am a mechanic/MOT tester I know how many suspension faults are missed on two post ramps, But for some work a two post ramp is the best option, For servicing Four post are great, But two post is better for things like Renault Traffic slave cylinders :-( There was a jacking beam to lift the wheels up of the deck as DeathK said

The ready-to-use screenwash, while handy if in a rush, is a terrible waste of money and resources- buying a 5l bottle of concentrated screenwash and putting it in in small parts as needed and diluting it is so much more cost effective and will last you a lot longer than the ready-made stuff.

    • @Callllum

I was changing a fuel pump and intended to just pay for an hour; after 45 mins one of the attendants came over for a chat and kept me talking so I was 3 mins over the hour by the time I dropped the ramp, and they charged me for a whole extra hour! Funnily enough I haven't been back since.

Isuzu engine though, not vauxhall, but i agree that doing often for the extra cost pays off.

As much as I like to service my car myself, I cannot be bothered to do the oil change on my own, as I don't have a garage with a service shaft, and there is no place where I could rent a ramp (with or without tools), so I take the car to the local car mechanic school, where they would do the oil change, oil filter and air filter change for 10 euros. They do it as soon as I show up (of course, I have to call or stop by for an appointment in advance), they let me watch the whole thing, and they are using the stuff supplied by me.
Also, the kids get to see a inline-5 engine, which is not that common :D

I've actually had the dealer try to talk me out of an oil change saying I don't need one (I go to them because it costs the same as buying the synthetic oil and filter myself). I do 6,000-7,000 miles a year and get it done every 6 months. My commute is 3 miles so it's a lot of stop and go with a cold engine. 6 months or 5,000 miles is the severe service recommendation in the book. Cheap insurance against future problems.

Currently my vehicle is sitting outside on four ramps in the cold weather waiting for the fuel line to be replaced as a few days ago the line started leaking seriously as the line had rotted away due to the salt that is used in winter during the icy days and to keep our roads clear. I sure as hell do not want to pay a shop to fix the line as I only want a few more months of use before I purchase a vehicle. I feel sorry for my father who has to lay on the cold ground with me helping as much as possible so I have a vehicle again.

No you live in London. Every 9,000 is sensible. Stop start stop start. You also have a high mileage vehicle. 9000 is absolutely fine.

Your right to change the oil every nine thousand oil can imagine all the dirt and shit in the oil and the filters if you leave it any longer dont go by the factory specs as they use there own brand of oil which can last the bit longer you never checked the dip stick after you filled the oil up

Speaking of rust, cars are getting worse again, we get brand new cars delivered with rust, right off the boat here in norway :7 Though it varies a lot from maker to maker, and sometimes model to model.

That's quite true. Amazingly the French Renault, Citroen, Peugeot. Still score quite well in the sheet metal rust protection. But even them have been cutting corners to keep up with the final price. :-(

Question Tom: As you live/work in London, do you give your van a good run up the motorway at all to give it a good blast out? I'm aware that short little trips at low speeds can cause sensors to block up with exhaust products. I have the same van (2013) and it loves a nice blast on the motorway after a working week of millions of short trips.

You should really wear rubber gloves if you're going to get used engine oil on your hands as it's quite carcinogenic due to all the combustion bi-products. Also, it's best to avoid revving an engine after starting it as, as you said, most of the wear occurs in the minutes after starting - especially immediately after starting as the oil takes time to fully circulate around the engine.

man, I wish they had something, anything like this in the states, holy shit is this a grand idea. Hell, maybe I should try and open a joint like this. I bet the only hindrance is the insurance vultures wont like it as you would be having uncertified people using heavy machinery like that lift and possibly hurting themselves. Even with having them sign waivers before rental the overhead insurance, location, building, property taxes would all be very cost prohibitive. But man, if it could be done I know I would love to rent from myself lol. I alwayways wanted a lift or a pit in my own garage.

Can anyone explain why it is you have a ring circuit, what are the benefits? Does it change the circuit protection? Do you have to use a ring circuit for new installs?
My understanding is it will lower the impedance and give you longer cable runs and you can increase the Amps on the circuit protection device?
