    THE LOVE OF GOD LYRICS
    The love of God is greater far
    Than tongue or pen can ever tell,
    It goes beyond the highest star,
    And reaches to the lowest hell;
    The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
    God gave His Son to win;
    His erring child He reconciled,
    And pardoned from his sin.
    When mortal time shall pass away,
    And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
    When men who here refuse to pray,
    On rocks and hills and mountains call;
    God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
    All measureless and strong;
    Redeeming grace to Adam’s race-
    The saints’ and angels’ song.
    Chorus:
    Oh love of God, how rich and pure!
    How measureless and strong!
    It shall forevermore endure,
    The saints’ and angels’ song.
    Could we with ink the ocean fill,
    And were the skies of parchment made,
    Were every stalk on earth a quill
    And every man a scribe by trade;
    To write the love of God above
    Would drain the ocean dry;
    Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
    Tho' stretched from sky to sky.

      You likely have no idea of the history behind this Hymn. written by Frederick Lehman (1868-1953) it sat unfinished on his desk for years as he couldn't find the last verse (writes block perhaps) however, years before someone handed him a poem found on the wall of a prison/hospital (the building had been used for both at some point) that was to be painted over. The painters were so moved by the words that they copied them down before painting over them.
      Those words found their way, somehow on a slip of paper in the back of Frederick bible, when he read them again he realised the those words were the last verse of the hymn he has struggling to finish. Oddley, the last verse that had been so elusive was with him even before he started to write the hymn- The Love Of God.
      Could we with ink the ocean fill,
      And were the skies of parchment made;
      Were every stalk on earth a quill,
      And every man a scribe by trade;
      To write the love of God above
      Would drain the ocean dry;
      Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
      Though stretched from sky to sky.
      One wonders what drove someone to write those words on that wall, and did they know the fragility of their existence in such an environment, how many times did those words nearly disappear into a white wall. How amazing, men, painters, charged with eraising those words saved them, and were, in their own way, writing the last verse of The Love of GOD.
      Oh, hymns at that time, and probably still do require 3 verses, probably to reflect the trinity.

    I was reading about the history of this song and Daddy God taught me something precious that put tears in my eyes.
    Part1 and Part2 was written by the author of the song himself.
    However, the source of part3 was
    ''penciled on the wall of an unknown patient’s room in an insane asylum after he had been carried to his grave. The assumption was that this inmate had scratched out the words in moments of sanity''
    This verse came to my mind.
    1John4:18-19 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
    This unknown mental patient, at the moment of sanity, remembered God's love.
    Mental issue lnvolves fear and torment and ONLY God's love can set them free. The doctors say there is no cure for mental health (My mum struggles with this). The Bible say Daddy's Love is the cure.
    AND God use the writing of a mentally ill patient to create one of the most well know hynm to bless His Church for generations. How God can use the weak. Oh the grace of our God.
    Meditate on 1John4:18-19 again. In Matt22:36-40, Rom13:10 Jesus taught us that Love is the fulfillment of the Law. We are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Love others as ourself.
    Where/how can I find the strength to do that? 1John4:19 say We love Him because He first loved us. Where/how did God demonstrate His love for me? At the Cross!! (Rom5:8)
    At the Cross with open arms, Jesus love me with ALL His Heart, ALL His Soul, ALL His Mind and ALL His Strength.
    And unless I have a revalation of His amazing love for me, I find myself without the strength to love. Love is not something I can ''force'' out. Genuine love flows from the heart (John7:38, Rom5:5-8) and unless I allow myself to freely receive His love, how can I freely offer it to YHVH and the people around? (Matt10:8)
    Hope this ''short'' sharing bless you as much as it bless me. May we all exprience His love today.

      The place where the painters were sent to paint over those words was used both as a prison and a mental hospital, obviously at different times so we cant be sure if it was a prisoner or someone detained for treatment who wrote those words. What we do know is plainly the prisoner, let's call him the thief on the cross, or the sick person in need of God, both receive his mercy and help. Oddly, well I don't know why I say oddly, but the help those words brought to the poor soul who penned them didn't stop with them, but to millions even to this very day. Those words individually are nothing more than words in a dictionary, a Holy Book or the most depraved writings, but placed in the right order is the key to our hearts. it was the Holy spirit who visited that patient/prisoner and opened their hearts to write those words so even the most in need can bring riches to many many more.
      Even the painters tasked with painting over those words realised something that the person who sent them didn't as one or other of them copied those words which eventually found their way to their intended home, which was a hymn called- The Love of God.
      Studying the history of hymns is the most humbling experience, only second to that of reading the gospels.
