Byron was amazing back in the day when it was all the hippies and surfers but it was ruined when it became a haven for back packers. Within a few years it went from fabulous, alternative and laid back to a busy, boring, tourist trap.

And then the millionaire celebrities moved in, sent property prices through the roof and completely destroyed it for anyone else. I used to surf Byron/Wategos in the 70s but now I can't stand the place even though I have some friends who live there.

18:28 I live within driving distance of Byron Bay and I think it's over-rated. There are so many nice places along the coast that don't have the bustle. I recommend you do a day trip to Ballina one day. A few years ago I saw dolphins surfing near the mouth of the Richmond River. They would catch waves, swim back and do it again.
If you do visit Ballina make sure to check out the Big Prawn.

Ballina LGA is most underrated due to proximity to Byron. Lennox Head is a better alternative to Byron and the view from Pat Moreton lookout over Lennox's Seven Mile Beach is stunning.
Probably the only negative of Ballina is the less than inspiring main street backing on to the Richmond River which is wide and spectacular.
Weep on Sunny Coast, Goldie and Byron, Ballina is best.

Your summary of Byron was spot on. NSW is not as laid back as QLD. I much prefer Noosa as it has the river as well and more room for people to spread out.
The lighthouse walk is awesome (go the coastal bush route up, and the road back). The cute hippy town of Mullumbimby is 20 min drive inland, and then you must go to Crystal Castle, the gardens are full of rainforest and the views from the really good cafe are amazing.
Love that you guys are willing to drive to places and are so open to exploring and the way you appreciate nature is so refreshing. HNY!!🎉🎉

Traditional Neenish Tarts - Sugar Salt Magic
Neenish Tarts | Australia's Best Recipes
A neenish tart is a tart made with a pastry base and a filling consisting of sweet gelatine-set cream, mock cream, icing sugar paste, or lemon and sweetened condensed milk mixture, with dried icing on the top of the tart in two colours. The addition of a layer of raspberry jam is a common recipe variation.
    They are very sweet.

Neenish Tarts have been one of my favs since I was a kid. They are a light snack, not too heavy, but very sweet and great with a cup of tea or coffee. Invented by Ruby Neenish in her home town of Grong Grong, NSW in 1913.

During summer we have 4 time zones as some states have daylight saving (not QLD).
It’s based on the distance from Greenwich, the UK town (which I’ve been to, fascinating place).
Longitudes divide the globe every 15 degrees and start at Greenwich (latitudes go around it, eg. the equator is latitude 0). So depending on what longitude you’re on, is how far from GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) you are.
Clear as mud, hey 😂 but hopefully helps a bit.

There are actually a couple of tiny time zones that don’t fit in the main ones. A piece of WA near SA - only one little town called Eucla - has its own time zone. There are either 3 or 5 main time zones depending on if it is in daylight savings time (5 cos NT and QLD don’t do it) or not (3).

My home town is similar to Byron in terms of it being a Mecca for tourists in WA because it is a little over 2 hours away from Perth down the coast and its pretty much the only place people from Perth and surrounding areas want to go for a local holiday, other than Rottnest Island. During summer and Easter, you just want to avoid going near the town. Byron has the whole international tourist circuit going on more recently though and they, as well as the weather, aren't as seasonal, so I'd imagine it would be busy fairly frequently. Going anywhere popular during the Christmas holiday though is going to show the place at its most hectic.

Few places I'd recommend (lived in the region for years).. Crystal Castle is magic!! Fingal Head is just on the NSW side of the border & awesome for the view. Sheoak Shack (in Fingal) is a cool place to eat. In the town of Pottsville, further south, is a brilliant takeaway where Japanese meets Aussie. Their sweet potato chips were divine!!... & GF (I'm coeliac). It's called Okky Fish Chips Salad. There's a lot of eateries in Pottsville, & diversity. Cabarita Beach Headland. It's a beautiful drive into the Tweed Valley. Chillingham is lovely for it's nature. Tyalgum worth visiting. The hinterland in from Byron has some magic places. Awesome scenery. Well, that should keep u busy for a while lol. I had a feeling u'd end up in Byron... worst time of year cause it's major hectic. Watagos Beach (Byron Bay) is beautiful but dogs aren't allowed cause it's a national park. There's good surfing all along that part of the coast, but it gets hectic. Loving watching u explore.

If you go to Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, it is just as crowded and touristy, hence why I prefer Sunshine Coast.
One piece of note, there are bull Sharks in the channels they are very aggressive so please be careful.

I've only started watching this video so hopefully when you went to Byron Bay, you went to Highwayman Whisky - he makes some of Australia's best small-batch whisky...
The water temp in NSW and QLD doesn't change much - it is about 6 degrees different between lowest and highest temp - around 18-24 degrees...
Also, Great White Sharks prefer the colder deeper water - like in SA or the bottom of WA... At the end of the day - Yeah-Nah-Yeah

I come from NSW south coast and during school holidays, beach resorts will be packed with people and if you time your trips outside of school holidays, there will be fewer people.
The beaches do have cold water, even for the locals. The sea currents run from south to north and you do need to remember that Antarctica is just south of Australia and the ocean water to the south is very cold. The cold sea water also keeps the sea breezes very cool and when the winds blow this air to land the air temperature will drop quite a lot and always have a jacket with you (even on a very hot day) or you will freeze.
With sharks, don’t swim at dawn or dusk or near river mouths and never swim in water that is murky (in rivers and after storms).

Didn't you watch 'Finding Nemo' and every sailor knows that the East Australian Current runs from North to South. That is how Nemo got from his home on the Great Barrier Reef and ended up in Sydney Harbour. It runs all the way to Tasmania and with warming ocean temperatures, they are finding tropical fish off the east coast of Tas. It's colloquially known as the 'conveyor belt' and in the centre can run at speeds of 4 knots (7 kph). Sea temperatures do get cooler the further south you go because the average air temp is cooler. The humidity in Qld keeps the water warm overnight but that is there in the southern states. The southerly flow of the EAC is great if you are in a yacht race heading south (Syd 2 Hob), it's like a turbo charger. However, in races heading north (Syd 2 Gold Coast and Bris 2 Gladstone) it is like having the hand brake on. At the edge of the current closest to land, the drag forms eddies that twist around to the North. They are not cold as they do not originate in the Southern Ocean so are still relatively warm. In yacht races heading north, boats will stick close to land (a) to keep out of the EAC and (b) get a lift from the northerly eddies. This why navigators and tacticians (me) will keep close to shore in these races. It can be a quicker course even if there is stronger wind further offshore but further offshore you are sailing against a 4 knot current and could end up going backwards if the wind dies.

@@EatVentureVlog Sorry but it is incorrect. See my comment. If you haven't watched the animated film 'Finding Nemo" I suggest you do, it is fabulous. It has some the best Aussie actors doing the voice overs (but with a slight American accent for commercial reasons). One of the best is Barry Humphries (Dame Edna) as Bruce, the Great White Shark.

Good, accurate review of Byron Bay. I was there a couple of weeks ago and the traffic was ridiculous. It’s been like that for years and there’s still no solution to it. I really like the place but there’s too much traffic for the size of the town - exactly as you’ve described. The neighbouring towns are nice to visit and don’t quite have the crazy congestion.
Apparently the non-peak season in the cooler months is a better time to visit, so that might be an option for you.

France has the most time zones because it treats its territories as part of the one sovereign state. Therefore, it covers from New Caledonia in the western Pacific to the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean - 12 time zones, 13 if you add their claim to their Antarctic Territory.

I was living in that area in the 90s, 2000s left there it got too hot, too busy, yeah people can be rude. I prefer when a place gets too busy, or too touristy you leave it for the tourists. There is also a whole coastline drive beyond Byron, towards Ballina that whole section is worth a drive. There use to be a cute little kiosk resturant at Shelly beach you go there during the week. It was really good to go there for brunch, the smoked salmon omelettes omg and its wonderful because you can see the dolphins and depending on the time of year the whales as they migrate. You are also in school holidays, so its really busy. Its the build up for New Years at Byron which you don't go near there. The town's infrastructure does not match the growth and popularity of the place. Also really be aware about going out too far at the beach, that shipwreck is where people jump off from, people go diving, but there are also sharks. There was a happening at the shipwreck two school girls got stuck on there, as sharks were circling. They had to be rescued. Its beautiful but it also can be dangerous. A lot of Australians are quiet, and prefer unpopulated, quiet places, undeveloped places. School holidays means hometime.

For something cheaper and simpler Hastings Point rock pools has some decent snorkeling or Moreton Island wrecks.)

Just one tip if you move there and your on Centrelink payments say unemployed they will cancel your payments. The government don't want people unemployed and move there just bludging and living a chilled easy life there.

One of the best things that ever happened was the diverting of the highway so you don’t have to go through Byron bay. Yes it is beautiful but it has always had traffic and parking problems. It’s certainly a cultural centre for those on the backpacker trail and therefore a must see destination for them. This overflows into it being a party town and like any crowd they diminish themselves with boorish behaviour. That’s not to say there aren’t a good number of of Ozzie’s there to participate in the revelry too
As to time zones, if you stood on the north or South Pole the time zones would be dependent on which way you were facing, that is less than a step apart. At the equator the time zones are approx 1000 miles apart. The closer you are to the poles the closer the time zones are - explaining why Canada and Russia - as well as the USA to a lesser extent have so many time zones. Australia has the tropical of Capricorn running through its upper third at Rockhampton. Very little of the USA is in the tropics - that is Hawaii but none of continental USA
Australia has a larger spread of zones if we include out territories like the cocos, Keeling and Christmas Island’s as well as Sydney’s far flung suburb of Norfolk Island

Be very careful if you go out kayaking on the canal at Currumbin, don't fall in, don't go swimming and don't let Picco swim in the canal. The Gold Coast canals are loved by Bull Sharks and are at their most dense population in summer. They are attracted by the fish that breed in the canals, creeks and rivers. They are very aggressive and there are documented cases of fatal attacks on people swimming in the canals. There are also more than a few stories of dogs chasing balls into the canal and disappearing never to be seen again. A friend who lived on a canal in Broadbeach Waters actually saw it happen to a neighbour's dog many years ago.

Byron at Xmas/New Year is too hectic for this old bloke.
The "structure" the kids were jumping off is part of a shipwreck "Wollongbar"
    sunk in 1920s.

He's thinking what the feck are you doing. Get me out of here. He immediately turns for shore 😅. I think the main thing people do is go up and see the lighthouse and a few of the beaches along the road. But let's face it you hit it on peak period. New year and school holidays! Killer. Not the time of year for Byron!

The risk of a shark attack is very low, as you said. Deaths from snake bite and deaths from shark attack are about on par with under three a year on average.

Joe trying that Mack and Cheese, that look ...... you can just feel the disappointment when he realises how far it is to come back for another one .... 🤣
I don't think I've seen you get disappointed with a meal you've been served? do you just edit out the disappointing ones?

I’m from NSW and Byron Bay is simply overrated these days. Expensive, touristy, busy these days. Personally, I love Neenish tarts.

There’s no way in the world that the ocean water temperature in Byron Bay in December is freezing. It’s has to be at least 25 degrees C if not more. You are getting a bit precious with your QLD temperatures..

Freezing wasn’t the right word for sure! It did feel noticeably colder compared to Queensland of course😊

I dont think you'll find a place on earth that has more council installed signage than byron bay... 2hr parking limit, parking ticket required, no dogs, no camping, no.. no... no... Its becuase you have your millionaires on the point who basically control the council and the council trying to control the rest. Also, there's a difference between a hippee who chooses not to work... and someone who's unemployable... Byron has the latter whereas the surrounding areas have the people making a lifestyle choice.

No 1: Don't travel during School Holidays in Oz if you don't want crowds
Sadly Byron is ruined by Backpacker influx just like Bondi and Coogee .
Noosa is far enough away in Qld to suffer the same fate for now.
Byron is best in the Whale Watching winter season 🐳
