I always loved this movie as a kid-- it was special and different than the other Disney movies. It didn't have magic or catchy songs, just... prehistoric beasts existing and fighting and struggling. And it doesn't make the carnivorous dinosaurs the bad guys, instead it's Cron that's the antagonist: a brutal leader who's willing to get his way at any cost even if it means the old and weak don't survive under his reign. It's a wonderful story about surviving and having hope, but also being willing to challenge dictators and all those who don't care if you die. It also really made me love Iguanadon as a species, they're charming. Thank you for covering this hidden gem of a movie!
Dinosaur, and Dino-King were the first dinosaur movies that broke my heart as a kid. Dinosaur, I enjoyed watching although it made me so sad. Dino-king... that was horrendously devastating for my child brain to watch, idk why my dad made me watch it in the first place! Just please, no, too heart breaking. Dinosaur made me upset enough not to want to watch it because of how well, oddly human and emotional it was. I loved it, the visuals, oml. I cannot believe none of my friends know this movie cause it certainly was a favourite that I was too scared to watch because I was frightened. The tenseness of the meteor scene ALWAYS used to get me, I remember it was 'better' in the sense of sound just because I was so young. It's still amazing and really captures the moment.
I grew up on this film, it still gets to me to this day. I have friends who also enjoy writing as much as I but none of them get this movie, I guess. Which is a weird thing to say because I think the elements it brings to the table are obvious even if you don't care for the film. But on the other hand, they may just not have paid attention which is more likely tbh lol. This film takes earth's mightiest animals and asks, "what was it like for the dinosaurs after the asteroid". Of course, it could be another asteroid event and none of these dinos lived with each other, but it's a very hopeful film. The music especially is probably my favorite soundtrack of all time. It's unique and grandiose in a way I've yet to find in another dinosaur film besides Jurassic Park (Primal's is great too but not what I'm talking about). I wonder if one day this film will get a resurgence, but maybe not either way it'll have a huge place in my heart.
I would actually argue they probably did get this movie and did understand the obvious themes and stuff like that, but that is a part of why it's not a good movie because the themes are both handled in a generic, kids movie way, and they are spoon-fed to us. It also doesn't ask if the dinosaurs never went extinct, as everything in this is done in an anthropomorphic way and more just asks how these dinosaurs will survive, which because it's a generic exodus story, is pretty obvious. This is also coming from someone who grew up with this movie and watched it millions of times and even though I understand the subtext and what they try to do, I just could never find myself getting invested in the characters or their struggles or jokes, even when I was a kid. That's because, objectively, as many others pointed out, this movie isn't written well.
I remember rewatching "Dinosaur" one night just for the sake of nostalgia only to then go "This movie didn't fuck around!". Later on, I read about the earlier developments for the movie which apparently would have made it even darker so it turns out the movie DID fuck around.
While I _respectfully_ disagree that Paul Verhoven _’should’ve’_ directed “Dinosaur,” that *isn’t* a diss on him as a director. His vision, to me, sounds more in line with what the original 1999 “Walking with Dinosaurs” would eventually become (in that ‘nature documentary’ vein).
Honestly, the movie was a masterpiece. "Mixed reviews" come from professional critics, not the target audience which overwhelmingly embraced the film, hence a shifting of Disney's stance on 3D animation once they saw its potential/viability for itself. Btw, Lion King for sure inspired Dinosaur, just as Dinosaur inspired the Lion King remake in the sense that it's a gritty hero's journey narrative following talking animals. Since the Lion King came out a whole 6 years before Dinosaur I honestly think it isn't a coincidence that Disney went with a more tragic, yet well-tested plotline for their initial foray into 3D animated film. Gonna keep an eye out for your other work in the future, cheers.
Correction: The predatory dinosaurs were not T-Rex, they were Carnotaurus. The "raptors" that stole the egg are called Oviraptors, and are not related to Dromaeosaurs, which is what most people typically think of when someone says "Raptor". Hope that clears things up!
It's almost been 25 years since Disney's Dinosaur has released and its ride in Animal Kingdom is dying. Someone had to direct a new sequel to save DinoLand and its legacies. The sequel would be called Dinosaurs: Countdown to Extinction based on the ride featuring new dinosaurs, human characters and T-Rex antagonist as D23 could've announced.
It's such a shame that Ralph Zondag and Eric Leighton never directed another movie again after this one. And I hate that people believed this movie was made just so Disney can cash in on the success of Pixar, calling it a bad movie, boring, and outdated with CGI. But the effects were very ambitious for a movie released in 2000. This movie was an example of a bygone era for Disney. Disney pushed themselves to aim for an older audiences in the early 2000's. Some examples of these are Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Remember the Titans, and Pirates of the Caribbean, but while trying to make something for the whole family. And RIP Joan Plowright who voiced Baylene.
The main reason why Disney's Dinosaur is often disregarded is because the plot is too identical to Universal's The Land Before Time. Both involve prehistoric animals traveling across a wasteland to find a green valley to call home.
That's not the main reason. The main reason I have heard from many people is the generically executed story and characters. I've somewhat heard more people compare the story to exodus and for obvious reasons. That's also why I don't feel too much for this film despite it being a prominent part of my childhood. This film would've been SO much better if they went with some of the previous drafts and ideas for the story, especially the first one.
