  • www.comicsforbe... Getting from story to comic book pages can be a daunting task. What is the process behind breaking the script down into pages and breaking pages down into panels? How do you decide on the best possible way to tell your story in pictures? How do you avoid the fear of the blank page?
    In this episode, Palle covers all the basics in page layouts and how to plan out your story, including thumbnails, establishing shots, cliffhangers, thumbnails, splash pages and bleed - and some pitfalls to be aware of.

    Wow, I was going to ask a question, but I see now this video is almost 7 years old, but who knows, I might get lucky. I write comic scripts for my own comic series and give those scripts to my artist. I've always written in panels and pages, the artists making their own layouts, but MOSTLY sticking to my panels. Is this weird? Do most artists break the script up into pages and panels themselves? My first book was drawn by Trevor Von Eeden, a very experienced and professional artist, and he never questioned my choice to specify pages and panels in the script, though sometimes he'd add or combine panels if he thought it looked better.

    • @PalleSchmidt1
      @PalleSchmidt1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Bradley, good question! I think most artists pretty much stick to what the writer suggests. As do I, when I'm working from someone else's script. But I find that when I'm writing for myself it makes more sense to break it down after the fact. Putting in panel descriptions and page breaks kinda stumps the flow of the writing for me. I like to get the story down and worry about the execution on the page later. Hope this answers your question!

    Hello! I have been wanting to construct a comic or illustrated book (the old faschioned kind) for the longest time but I was so confused as to where to start. I had all those ideas but I was not able to construct them and put them together into an actual product!
    Your videos have inspired me and provided the structural advise that I needed and after only a couple of days' work I am farther along than I was for months!
    Right now I am working on the script and once that is all done I will be moving along with the illustration process

    Hi Palle. A wonderful video and very informative. I know this is an old video from 9 years ago, but can I ask you some questions.
    Say I have a pencil drawing and I want to do my paneling digitally, is it just a simple as scanning my drawing into my computer, do what I need to do with my drawing like turning my drawing into a digital artwork then fitting the artwork around a panel?
    Hope that makes sense.
    Last question, if I was to do my comic paneling digitally, what program do most comic book use?
    Photoshop? Illustrator? InDesign? Maybe it depends on the artists taste?

    • @comicsforbeginners
      @comicsforbeginners  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, Ben! Yea, you can absolutely scan your drawing and fiddle with it in the computer, like adjust the contrast and make the line more crisp. And yes, you can fit in a panel - but I would be way of scaling too much up or down as it affects line thickness. You'd be surprised how visible it is in a printed book when images vary in line width. In regards to paneling, like you say it depends on the artist. I just got ProCreate for my iPad Pro and it seems very useful for this. And it's very affordable, not like Adobe programs 😞. Hope you find something that works for you!

    • @benlines2987
      @benlines2987 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@comicsforbeginners Thank you 🙏 for your reply. I use Procreate myself. I have done quite a few of my artwork in Procreate. I am in development of my first ever graphic novel and I have been getting to know the industry a bit. I want to try and use programs efficiently.
      A have a question if you don’t mind me asking, when beginning a graphic novel is it best to start out knowing the dimensions and size of the book? I would assume this information comes from a printing house. Offset or print on demand.
      Is this a good beginning?
      Thank you Palle.😊 I can’t wait for more good feedback.

    • @comicsforbeginners
      @comicsforbeginners  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty good with characters, so no. But I trace a lot of other things! Cars, rooms, buildings, you name it. And no, I don't think you need to be a great artist to make great comics. Look at Gary Larson og Marjane Satrapi! You need to be good at communicating and tell a compelling story for sure.

    • @PalleSchmidt1
      @PalleSchmidt1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A full character arc might be a bit much. You would likely have more like a turning point where the character changes his mind on something or there's a significant change in her life. In a short story it will be a sort of slice-of-life story revolving an important event in the character's life.

      David Watson Absolutely not! Most writers do. But since I'm usually drawing the pages myself, I leave the breakdowns for later. I find that thinking in panels and page breaks takes the fun out of writing the script. If someone else is drawing, include panels and page breaks.

      Oh, I wish that had been mentioned from the start, before I invested my time into the series... I got as confused as many others when I could only find the teasers for the rest of the series.
      It's a great series, but that was kinda a douchy thing to do, get people invested into it and then say "to continue, you need to pay". It gives us a false sense of what to expect of the series, giving the illusion that you want to teach us, and makes you look a bit money-grubbing.
      If you had been honest from Episode 1, you would not come out looking that way. Then you'd look like someone who wants to teach us, and gives us a third of the lessons for free.
      See the difference? One way makes you look generous, the other makes you look greedy, without changing the content much.

      Sorry you feel that way. The series was always intended to go up on comicsforbeginners.com, but since the first three vids are free, I figured I'd put them on TH-cam as well, so more people could enjoy. I have a 30-day money back guarantee and keep the price pretty low, I don't think that's money-grubbing. The fact that a part of my audience pay for content keeps the site and this channel ad-free for the rest of you.

      I do understand that, but you're still leading the majority of the viewers, which will only see the TH-cam content, in the dark about this until it is too late.
      As I said, it makes you *look* like you're money-grubbing, even if that's not the intention.
      Some captions on Episode 1, or even mentioning it in the description would solve this for you. As it is now, the only mention I could even find of this is this very comment thread.

      @@PalleSchmidt1 thanks, I was thinking more in the lines of your Comics for Beginners video series. You have really good material and your explanations just make sense. Really good stuff. I know this is old but I just found it, and these videos are timeless.

      @@PabloPazosGutierrez Gotcha. SOLO is more about the business and mindset aspect of creating art, where it makes more sense to have the how-to stuff in video format. Glad you connect with it.Thanks for the kind words!
