Thanks for the video Mark. My great grandfather sailed on the Cutty Sark as the ship’s carpenter (I’m in my 70s). He did of course sail on other ships in the late 19th century and travelled all over the world. I have only one small memento of his - a piece of “logwood” (wood that produces a red dye) from South America; when my late mother was a girl they used shavings from this piece of logwood to dye eggs at Easter.
Very cool!
My dear wife, sadly now passed, was an archivist at the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. We spent many happy days in the park and surrounding area, in which we lived.
Love this. Bless her and thank you Phil
The power station Mark, is a backup one, for the London Underground if there is a power cut from the National Grid which powers the Tube.
Awesome...thank you
.
Mark , when the Cutty Sark caught fire in 2007, there was speculation it would be too expensive to repair. Luckily due to fundraising it was ! Fortunately the masts and rigging had been removed. Don't apologise for things you don't know ❤️ When you visit London, it might be worth checking if the atrium has reopened before you visit the Maritime Museum.
Awesome Lynda thank you
@MarkfromtheStates I bet you can't wait until you can get over to the UK. I know a lot of your fans would love to meet up with you ( in a pub ? ) 🙂 Perhaps you would find it too much, so don't feel you have to x
A pub ??
How big would that need to be?better aim for Hyde Park or some such large open space.a pub indeed. with one man and his dog i suppose. @@lyndarichardson4744
Mark. The circular red brick building by the Cutty Sark is the entrance to the tunnel under the river. Greenwich has the old Royal Observatory, celebration 350 years this year. Nearby is the Greenwich Meridian Line, from which world time is measured. The Cutty Sark is a famous record breaking Tea Clipper that hurried tea across the world in the 19th century. It has recently been restored after a fire almost destroyed it, while it was undergoing restoration, a few years ago. There is also the Royal Hospital, actually a retirement home for sailors, from the time of King Charles 2nd, this is the grand building on the riverside. Beside the Cutty Sark is the small yacht, Gypsey Moth 4th, in which Sir Francis Chichester made his solo circumnavigation of the world, about 40 years ago. There is also the Queen's House, part of an old Palace. One of King Henry 8th's favourite Palaces was here, but the Queen's House is much later, Jacobean or Georgian I think. Those Royals could not do with just 1 Palace, they had to have several. Harrison's Clocks, which made the measuring of Longitude much more accurate, & which Cook relied on during his voyages of exploration, & other scientific instruments are displayed in the Museum at the Observatory. Greenwich, originally a village, now a suburb of London, & an easy tube ride from the centre. Greenwich Park is another large green space in the city, while Greenwich itself still has a village feel.
How are you Daniel?
Oh gosh forgot about the clocks...yes need to visit
I haven't been there for a while. There was a big Mexican restaurant. Also a pub close to the ship that had a seafood stall around the back. There was a shop called naughtica it sold maritime stuff like ships clocks, rops, and cloths.
Correction, clothes.
You probably know this Mark, but just incase you wasn’t aware…. The top part of Greenwich Park and Blackheath is the start of the London Marathon. All the athletes start from the main road and the “fun runners” start from inside the Park It’s on 27 April this year and if the BBC allows the USA to view it in “real time”, it is absolutely worth it …. The aerial drone shots of Greenwich and London in all its glory makes me 🥹happy and proud tears.
When the Marathon first started, it was only the main Blackheath Road at the start that was closed to vehicular traffic and it would be possible to park a car on a side road a few turnings away, close to the Park and just walk to the Start. You could then return to the car and taking a similar route drive up to the Finish Line (originally the Finish Line was on Westminster Bridge) to the Mall (finding a free car park space was a bit harder here though! 😏) and watch all the runners coming through. It was such a brilliant and happy occasion, everyone just proud to be part of the crowd cheering those superstars who has completed a 26.2 miles as heroes. Sadly, because it is now a “whole day event “ most of the roads are closed off completely and for longer, but it was fun doing the Start and the Finish while it lasted!
very nice...I did not know
Watch out for the Kenyans.
They are the best marathon runners. If a Kenyan person is v busy they say
I have marathon. It's part of their culture. Go Kenya

Mark, you don't live in London you can't know the layout of London. Great video as always. These guys are good. Take care.
Yes most British people wouldn't know those details and a surprisingly large number of youngsters in London don't know much or ever explore beyond their hood . Sadly. 37:34
That's true!
I think I learned from the video made about the recent renovations of the Elizabeth Tower that the Observatory used to check its clocks with the chimes of Big Ben before many buildings and traffic noise got in the way so the chimes were not so clearly heard. I tell you this to confirm Greenwich really isn't that far for you to go see if you want to.
I think I have to go
@@MarkfromtheStatesperhaps make it part of a trip down the river.
That gives a v good view of London and so relaxing.
When do you hope to come? So we can clear our diaries.
Bearing up thanks Carol.
Glad to hear it Daniel- stay strong mate , stay positive x
Hi Mark, I was doing a little light research after someone posed the question of why Ipswich Town FC were nicknamed "the tractor boys". I knew the firm of Ransome & Son moved here in 1780 at the time making ploughs and other agricultural wares, when the age of steam arrived they started building steam tractors steam road rollers and steam cranes, when petrol and diesel engines arrived they started making tracked tractors cranes and excavators\ still in existence today making lawn-mowers. What I didn't know was they also built steam trains, the very first petrol powered lawn-mower in 1905 but most importantly for this post, they produced the metalwork for 3 of the telescopes at the Royal Observatory between 1847 and 1859
Thank you Nick
😂 you caught me out at the start, Green which indeed 😅
A good couple of tour guides like their style. No i dont like the look of that filled doughnut either esp at that price !
A must place to visit.
Makes me happy that I at least got one...thanks Dave
Hi Mark, been to Greenwhich a few times as I'm only a 40 minute train ride away. Highly recommend it , has some nice pubs too . 😊
@claregale9011 seemed a lot longer I lev in Chatham now we're luckily most of the cuttysark had been removed to for restoration
Oh really...love it
People are not allowed to take photographs but inside the museum is Nelson's uniform with the musket ball entrance clearly visable on the top left hand shoulder of his uniform worn on H.M.S. Victory.
Oh wow! This will have to be on my list
Used to regularly sit on the top of the hill during the summer months. Must have been early 2000s, having a drink and it gets really busy too. Happy memories.
Plus you have to straddle the prime meridian, or the thingy line, as they called it😂😂
LOL yes an absolute must
The cuttysark was almost destroyed by fire in the 90s😢
Well thank goodness it wasn't...I want to visit
Actually it was 2007
So, exactly how long is your list now? 🤔 Just wondering! 😂🤗
Can we even call it a list at this point. LOL
@@MarkfromtheStates A hefty tome! 😂
Greenwich is a London Borough
Yes not sure why I thought it was further out
You can go on a riverboat only £5 from cental london to Greenwich pier
Perfect
Also check out if there's still companies who do trips on the London eye, cruise down the Thames and end with afternoon tea at a hotel all in one package and takes a couple of hours.
That would not be long enough to enjoy any of those.
And hotel afternoon tea is a tourist rip off. Avoid. If you ve got the money better to try Fortnum and Mason. Piccaddily.@@neilgayleard3842
Mark... Mark... Mark... it is _not_ a "burrow"
_a Borough_ is pronounced 'Burruh' . Okay?! :)
Ha! Yes
I know you were joking however many Americans do mispronounce it, but isn’t Greenwich Village in Manhattan pronounced the same way?
Absolutely the same. I'm sure there are some who do not know about the original Greenwich
I remember seeing some lovely Americans who lived near the US Naval base in Portsmouth Virginia. On hearing of the Royal Navy base at Portsmouth UK they marvelled at the coincidence of names . . .
mark, the greenwhich meridian, the 0 point on maps, where you get a line through the greenwhich place, so you can stand on the eatern side and the western side of the globe. because its the zero pint on latitude, prior to in the industrial revolutionas no one travelled, each country did there own time and time zone. but during a time of world change with the industrial revolution, better faster ships, and trains. countries started to lalign with trade and so on, but time were off the charts, so 30+ countries met in american to decide a single point that time could be run from, to alling the world so to speak, because of the navy and we ruled the seas, it was said the britain would be the center point, as well as the industrial revolution, a couple of countries apposed it, but fell in line soon after. thats the xtent of my knowledge
Thanks Sean. I think they made the right choice
I'm from Greenwich originally 😅❤
Awesome. So much to see
Mark, all clear, you get what im saying
first appolgies if you done it and i missed it. there is a great video, i will email you link, as i know you like to be respectful and ask first, i will email details.
its to do with greenwhich and how important it is, regarding time zones, how it came about, and how greenwhich is the 0 point on a map, and all time and dates are
taken from greenwhich, i dont want to give to mush away incase you have reacted, or have not reacted, so others can watch the video
but in short version, greenwhich london is the center of the earth, 0 longtitude runs through, to give you GMT greenwhich mean time, but its not as simple as you think
email you details my friend
Awesome thank you
It's in southeast london
Thank you Ian...not sure why I thought it was further out
Yaaaay!! Greenwich (pronounced as Grinnidge!!! Not GRENwich!! Grrrrrrr!! ) born, schooled and brought up in the London Borough of…..
At my Primary school, every term year, it was the obligatory trip to the Maritime Museum …..imagine 30 excitable children, running around the Museum with clipboard with an A4 Questions & Answers sheet in hand that the children were expected to complete with the proviso to not copy ‘word for word’ the information on the exhibit screens ….
But usually, we were NOT necessarily answering any of the questions but generally just “mucking abaaaht” 😳😲👀”not me though, Miss…I wasn’t with that naughty group ….yes, I know I haven’t answered any of the questions…but….”
The Meridian Line is now enclosed by a new wall, (wasn’t there in MYYYYY day! 🙄) which is part of the Royal Observatory and as you have to pay an entry fee, ostensibly to enter into the Observatory, it means you have to pay to step either side of the line!!
The Cutty Sark has been VERY WELL improved since I last visited it - lots of things to see and do inside, all I saw was just those figure heads, that we had to draw! 😩. If you look online at “old” pictures of the Cutty Sark, it was literally sitting in an open dock, surrounded by a wonky railing… one false move, it would be so much easy to slip and fall down into the big hole!
And running through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel - there is one in Woolwich too - completely ignoring the “Do Not Run” signage 😄 shouting loud to hear the echo - was also a “must do” for us naughty school children ….🤭
But a visit to Greenwich is an absolute MUST! it is ‘my’ heritage, a place I know so very well……even if I didn’t answer many of the questions in the Museum 🥺😆
Love this...thank you
A Trump and Musk apologiest still wants to Live in the Real World. Ha Ha. 😂😂😂. Get a Grip MARK .
