  • Extension Agent Celeste Scott says it could be that the plants have become shaded over time. Plants use sunlight to make sugar. If they don’t have as much light they may produce sour fruit.
Extension Agent Chris Cooper says the problem could also be caused by too little water during fruit development. This causes sour or bitter fruit in many kinds of plants.

If it's not lack of sun and not lack of water then it's the PH level is not acidic enough. This is also try for Blueberries. So it's one of those 3 things but I didn't hear the PH level mentioned in this video.

It could be the PH is not acidic enough. I'm in Arizona--mine started getting sour too, we have no lack of sun, my berries are also watered very well. But one thing I haven't been doing is keeping the soil acidic enough. Now I am using Espoma 6 lb. Organic Soil Acidifier - can buy at Home Depot or on Amazon. Keeps soil PH acidic.

I agree with this, the PH is likely too high.
Soil acidifier worked wonders on my blueberries. They were slow growing and tart/sour.
The plants have grown tremendously since adding soil acidifier over the past two seasons. Now i get lots of berries that are very sweet.
I should test the soil first, but Im going to start adding it around my blackberries.

Great. Have you experienced a situation when the blackberries did not ripen all summer? Ours do so a couple of years in a row. There is some "ash" that covers them and despite the powerful sun they just don't turn black.

I heard that over time, my blackberry patch has gotten too alkaline. They say to add ammonium sulfate to acidify the soil again. Is that true?

Maybe try adding some natural sweetener to the soil, the plant may need some type of sugar or carbs in the soil for the plant to suck up...I just got some from a grow store.

Sad to say that this did not help.

Genee, try this: Espoma 6 lb. Organic Soil Acidifier - can buy at Home Depot or on Amazon. Keeps soil PH acidic. I had the same problem, the sour fruit but the answer couldn't be it needed more sun because I am in Tucson where we have plenty of sun, I also water it faithfully and it gets good hydration. But what I wasn't doing was keeping my soil acidic enough. So I was told to get this product. HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU!!

This video is rubbish, I know my blackberries and they are great tasting anywhere.
Even here in Australia where the environmentalists hate them . .

How do you know it's not from the pesticides sprayed all over them? I'm eating some really nasty tasting ones from CA right now 😝
