This is a masterpiece. Those who watched the performance alive were fortunate.
Tom Morello’s Guitar solos always sound so intergalactic. I love it.
Yeah! It always sounds like if he is arguing with an alien XD
After more than 30 years listening to rock songs, this is still my number 1. Nothing to add, can't get better.
I agree!
Yesss!!!
fühl ich
I disagree, but I see
Your point, bro
Just so sad, that the Boss is today selling tickets for fees that not a single one of these people he sings about could affort. Such a shame.
Tom Morello is a Genius, Bruce the legend
"I guess you guys are not ready for that.....but your kids are gonna love it. -Marty Mcfly
Great Scott this is heavy
Marty, we must go back!!
Ciaran C where? :O
:D bam!
Marty and The Starlighters!!!!!!
I mean c’mon admit it, this is one of the greatest live performances of any song in the history of music.
Bruce could be the lead guitarist in most groups, Tom teases him early on, I love Nils in oz 2014 but what the beep is Tom doing, this is burn the house down stuff. This will be played on my send off. Amazing
Really is
You are damn right!
what does that even mean
I admit it. And it is pretty rare too. Hope this video will stay forever!
This is the greatest live guitar performance of all time. End of story!!
When Tom starts his solo the crowd collectively gasped as though they saw the ghost of Jimi Hendrix 😂😂😂😂 the man is simply not human
don't understand how anyone could dislike this, it's so intense and it's one of those songs you never want to end
bergie - they either hate the sentiment, or they hate Steinbeck!
Try not to focus on negative things. There is a motorcycle thingy people called " target fixation ". You run into whatever you looking at while riding a motorcycle. I mean, do not pay attention to negativity. It will steer you into itself. Cheers o/
Big Blue Frontend ok I get that, it's good music, but sometimes it's nice just to get straight to the point and let the music do the talking
most of them have no clue about Steinbeck or the Grapes of Wrath
Probably because they don't like the political sentiment. However, as much as I love Bruce, Tom, and this performance, there may be another reason. Tom's solo is recycled/repurposed for this song. He originally did it with Street Sweeper Social Club. If I'm not mistaken, I have it saved on my computer somewhere. Footage that I actually filmed myself.
Jesus Christ. What a fucking solo at the end. Tom Morello, guitar wizard.
Frank Wilson hell yea
Frank Frank the hole in your belly verse brings back a scary movie when i got fatally but the lord kept me alive and gave me a full recovery
Frank Frank guitar dj master
This is a Masterpiece. Pure art.
safe
In his Masterclass, Tom Morello talks about the construction of this solo, and how he kept it a secret during soundcheck by 'Chuck Berrying' his way through an imposter solo. Bruce also changed the key on Tom at the very last minute, and he was having difficulty singing it, and he didn't have time to transcribe the chords, which is why you see him hold back on the guitar until the solos. Tom puts every ounce of passion he has for social change into that solo. It makes you want to weep, and I actually did.
very nicely put
@David McGivern Don't be a turd
@David McGivern Is this just garden variety nihilism, or a conservative hot take?
@David McGivern Anarchy, cool. Bruce and Tom like making stories about the little guy, and I like hearing stories about the little guy.
@David McGivern The only people who would hate me are people I've wronged. I am not a corporate executive, nor am I a corrupt politician, or a power-tripping police officer. So nah.
Tom Morello Rocks..... this is one of the best I've seen
God dammit!!! I've watched this approximately 85 times now over the years and EVERY time it just gets better and better!!! I LOVE TOM MORELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Jennifer Fish I know. I can´t get enough of it. I am hooked. Also Tom Morello with his IWW symbols regenerated my interest in Joe Hill.
Same here, literally hundreds of times. I saw it live. Love the anticipation for that solo. Good to know there are others like me.
First time ive seen it. I just watched it twice. Bruce springsteen and tom morello synching up near the end with the rest of the band was melting butter.
nope more lke a million
I dont
2020 still jamming this daily. Such a powerful performance.
great bruce but tom is beyond
This song gives me chills to my core next level doesn't give it justice it's almost other worldly
@@davemustaki134 Couldn't agree more.
And now I'crying like an idiot unable to say why. Had a swiiss boyfriend who looks like the Boss. He had his own band and sang and played his music 🎸🤟🏼♠️🤠🎼🎸🇨🇭🇫🇷☘️🌺😊
It even makes more sense now!
Tom Morello played the guitar so hard it caused a glitch in the matrix 7:28
Deja vu
LOLL
😂👌
Good one
Jajajaja un csmr tom
One of my favorite performances. Tom Morello is fantastic!
இڿڰۣڿڰ ღ :)
came here for tom and lyrics
Zero Verrin me too.first time I heard this I immediately replayed this solo twice much to the annoyance of my son who doesn't appreciate just how good this is.
+Ken Johnson lol it's okay it's how life is
Just been watching this again and I can't help thinking that Bruce looks like he's struggling to have a shit when he plays solo😫
Tom is next level. He made the guitar another instrument like Hendrix did
Hendrix, Van Halen, Kirk Hammett Dimebag Darrell and Tom Morello are the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time! They took the instrument and made it into something new!!
@@stinkybojangles4128 Hammett really doesn't belong there.
@@stinkybojangles4128 gilmour

Yeap
it brought me to tears in 2009, and even more so today in 2020
In my opinion , one of the three best solos in the history of music. " Confortably numb " ( David Gilmour ), " Stairway to heaven " (Jimmy Page ), " The ghost of Tom Joad " ( Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello ). Let each one put in the order they want .
Masterpiece !!!!!
Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd, in my opinion.
Alchemy Live version. Sultans of Swing. Check it. 😳
Good list but hard to limit to just 3!! Agree on the Skynard and Mark Knopfler suggestions. And you have to include Hendrix - take your pick, Red House for example. Would you really leave off BB King (Sweet Little Angel for example) and Buddy Guy (so many)? And would it be crazy to mention Angus Young on Let There Be Rock?
He is Amazing, but Angus Young ? performance ?
@@GeorgiGeorgiev-ph4tc Yes, of course. "Stairway to hell" is an anthem. Angus is inside the top of the top !!!
The passion this version releases is just amazing. That passion my mom had. The views expressed in this song she bought 100%. I lost her to MS September 6. This is for you mom! We won't give up!! I love and miss you! RIP.
God bless your Mom!
Rip to get ur beautiful mother.
4:37 Tom Morello acting like a new guy at a party
+TMmodify I chuckled
hahahahaha
Lmaooo
At the end when he’s waving and walking away, he reminds me of Forrest Gump.
and did it well!
im still loving this im 56 my youngest is 10 he loves it i have raised him well!!!
Brilliant performance! It doesn't get better than that. Not much has changed in the USA since John Steinbeck wrote the book "Grapes of Wrath" in 1939, from which came the character, "Tom Joad". This was a fantastic tribute from a great writer and two great rockers! Thank you.
Если после "грозди гнева" прочитать труды Ленина, то всё встанет по полочкам.
Morello fucking killed that. This dude never ceases to amaze me. That song was made 100x better with the new spin on it and that was an impossible task to take on. Thank god Bruce still remains relevant enough to appreciate the talent of a guitar genius like Tom Morello
bruces new spin on youngstown wilth Lofgren doing the solo outro live is insaaane!!! :D
@@enednas801 Do you have a link for the version you're talking about?
5:56 "Look in their eyes, Ma, and you'll see me" The best part!!
This performance makes me cry every time…the song is still so topical and the performance…if someone ever was capable of feeling, feel this!
It's amazing how Bruce pays attention to the poor, to the people who found themselves in damn tragic social situation. He keeps on singing about them, helps in charity though he could forget about how it is to be poor. He never was poor indeed. But he understands. Great man.
All the while being mega rich !
@@sean79779 So was Johnny Cash, never bothered anyone
Great songwriter !
Of course he knows what it was like to struggle with money. If Born To Run (the album) hadn't been a success the record company would have dropped him.
@@sean79779If he was a republican he would pay less tax, but he is a democratic. So he puts the working class’ financial interests ahead of his own. Sounds like a good person.
I have absolutely no idea how people survive on the street. I had one of the most forgiving homeless experiences of anyone on the planet - temperature rarely below 10 deg C, food most days, very little aggression from other homeless people and ready access to clean water - but after 2 weeks of that I wanted to end my life. My brother reasoned that it might just scare me away from a pattern of self-destructive behaviour, and he was right, at least in the short term. If I ever find myself back in that park, it'll be the last night of my life. Great song, but its a lot more than just words for me now, and that's an admission I never thought I'd have to make. When you get into the comfortable bed tonight, be thankful - I certainly am.
its called survival
Yeah , this is more than just words for me too
people wont understand what its like to sleep on a solid rock
Some of us do understand. I have been there myself and it i appreciate the comfort of a warm, cozy home ten fold these days. Have to be thankful because there are people who have been out there so long that a normal existence is what seems to be miles away. Sleep at peace people and just know the only between you and them that’s different is a few short circumstances in the left or right. Imagine if it was all taken from you tomorrow and it were up to you to keep your family alive and well. Have to appreciate what we have each day..
These guys got enough energy to power a small city!
One of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen. Tom Morello is a fuckin genius!
Waanzinnig, dit is het beste wat ik hoorde in 75 jaar.. Het raakte me in elke vezel
One of the best rock songs ever!!! This is why we don't have original rock songs no more and the music industry promotes shit like r & b, gangsta hip hop, dance and pop music. The establishment doesn't want songs like this one since it is too dangerous for them. Thanx Bruce and Tom from Greece for a great performance and great lyrics
Tom morello
Such an underatted guitarist
Mad skills 🎸🎸🎸
Best song and performance ever. Greetings from Germany
Who is still rocking these guys in 2019?
Duh Good MUSIC IS TIMELESS!
Still rocking this in 2020. this shit never gets old!
It's 2021, we're ravaged by the plague and social injustice. Still here
This is an unlikely but incredible duo, two rock legends from two different generations
hell yea
Not very unlikely, RATM did a fantastic cover of this.
Springsteen is a good guitarplayer,,,,,,,,, and there is Tom Morello,,,,,,,WOW
This video clip brings so much f**king nostalgic memories 10 years ago when i was young and doing meth…God blessed me i am clean now and still listening to this legendary masterpiece
I almost forgot to watch this today
Tom makes a masterpiece of a solo. That Solo has everything, phrasing, technic, criativity ..... the works
Bruce is not known as a great guitarist but he puts so much feeling in each note more than anyone I have ever scene.
>scene
Another guy who isn't a super-skilled guitarist but pours his entire soul into his playing is Neil Young. That'll always sound better to me than some mindless shredding, no matter how technical and complex it might be.
+Anes Tojaga Neil Young isn't technical when it comes to fret hand but some of his strumming is damn near impossible to get exact
People don't realize how good a guitarist Bruce is til they see him live
completely agree!!
Bruce even stands aside while tom has his solo what an absolute legend!
Unglaublich gut! Mir fehlen die Worte. Besser geht es nicht. Tom ist auch ausserordentlich gut. ❤❤❤🇨🇭
I watch this at least 3 times a day, one of the greatest songs ever written.
Look at Bruce and Tom together.... Its absolute beautiful for my ears to listen to this... Im very thankful for this awsome performance of both of them❤
me too.
This has to be one of the best live guitar solos of all time. Amazing energy and creativity.
Sorry, I have to disagree!! This is bad noice in some parts😔
@@kafitoglobal3258 also it's out of Key many of these times
When you are so good that Bruce Springsteen and the E street band become your back up band.....you must be tom morello.
WOW! Blow me away! This is outstanding! I've been homeless and I can feel the anger and despair in this!
I'm just wondering, when you were homeless did people genuinely want to help you out?
I hope so, and I hope you are in a better place now, greetings from Australia.
I was living in straight poverty and people wanted to turn their back on me. One time I was stiffed for $180.00 on a paycheck. Started to run out of money and I needed about $2.50 to get enough money to buy a bottle of insulin for a family member. Three hours later a guy gave me the money.
Had no running car and had to ride a bike for over two miles to get insulin. The cashier who saw me regularly and liked me looked at me like I was a criminal drug addict all of a sudden. About 8 months later, I landed a good paying job, went back in and she was treating me good again, because I wasn't sweaty from riding miles on a bike in the heat.
I will never forgive those people, ever. For all the people I gave money and animals I helped, if I see those people stuck on the side of the road, I will leave them for dead.
I understand you've been through extremely tough times but I think forgiveness is a greater retaliation as opposed to what you've mentioned in your last line. Wish you the best.
jjsxc2002 you are wrong. Fuck 'em
He earned millions with that anger and despair
Tom is such a gifted guitar player, and this solo is one for the ages. That it runs ice cold down my spine, and only have goose bumps. I could listen to the solo all day! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Rainer, danke für den Tipp, ich stimme dem zu 100% zu.👏💯🎸
@@Guido1848 gern geschehen 😉😊
I was homeless and squatting in an old crumbling shed with no heat during a really rough winter when I fell in love with this song. I'd heard the Rage version before as a kid but not the original. Plus I didnt get it as a kid either. You have to have been there to fully feel the impact of this song. It makes me choke up even now.
You gotta love the way Bruce handles that band, Morello included. After they all come down on that final E minor, he tells Tom to play some more, to which he complies with a last fill and then you can see Bruce saying "There you go". He is really The Boss
Grapes of Wrath it's, maybe, the best book I've ever read. The raw reality narrated in the book is both sad and impactful
I've criticized Springsteen for a lot of things. But, no criticism this time. This is one of the best live performances I've watched in my life .... of anyone. And, the Ghost of Tom Joad is one of the best songs he's ever written.
Kudos to Tom Morello too, of course. That doesn't need to be said.
I agree Apocalypse Plough. In fact, the Ghost Of Tom Joad turned me around on Springsteen pretty much. I opened up to his music a lot after I first heard it.
Bruce is not the writer
According to Wikipedia Bruce is the writer.
tristan8141
My bad, mixed it up with Woody Guthrie
One of the few songs that brings a tear to my eye. Every goddamn time.
In my opinion, this the best song of The Boss.
TOM GOES COMPLETLY OUT OF HIS FUCKING MIND, AND I LOVE IT!!! bruce his face wenn he struggels with his solo part is heart breaking!!
+Marc Joosten I hope everyone complaining realize who Tom Joad is. Grapes Of Wrath Tom Joad! Both Bruce and Tom are passionate about the Homeless Problem facing our Great Nation and the shrinking middle class. They are both PHENOMENAL GUITARISTS and If I have to tell anyone what a Masterful Storyteller Bruce is, I give up!
+Marc Joosten that wasn't struggling fool. That was feeling.
ow oke, but im not a ''fool'' michael. but good to read your comment. you come accross like a nice person
Michael Morrell HAHA! How does anyone not get that? Bruce feels so strongly, well he and Tom both, about the increasing plight of homeless people in this once great country! Listen to some of his live performances and he'll tell you about it. Michael you get it!
+Barbara Bowman-Fuller i felt it.
This is EPIC, the entire performance not only guitars but the whole group so well assembled making the song unique
It's wonderful to hear those guitar solos, just a masterpiece
Yes, this is absolutely perfection in performance of both Bruce and Tom, it is totally amazing. This is both their performance of their life. This is 11 out of 10
every once in a while youtube recommends something FUCKING AMAZING!! This is one of those times!!!
Senti questo, pensi poi al vincitore di Sanremo 2019 e ti viene da piangere
Chi lo ha vinto? Non mi ricordo neanche
How lucky are we to have two completely different versions of that amazingly powerful song. I love the original, so mellow and quiet. I used to listen to it on long journeys up and down the country often at night, very poignant. And now this, it couldn't be any different, so powerful so raw, explosive and angry. Absolutely brilliant.
This song brings tears to my eyes.. it touch me to my core.. love it so much..
One of the best songs i´ve ever heard in all my life..sure!!
Come hear it again
I get goosebumps every time I watch this video
Prince and tom morello have to be the best guitarist ive ever seen
For me, one of the greatest rock songs ever. Guitar work is sublime.
That solo makes me cry of joy...
Holy shit, Morello is a god
CatsWithGuns130 I don't normally like this kind of guitar playing -- too harsh -- but here it's absolutely perfect. Goosebump material indeed.
That's where I'm gonna be Ma. Thanks Bruce from Christchurch. Thanks Tom for your truth.
I love the way Bruce sings, plays, AND... Impersonates Robert De Niro... All at the same time!
Accurate
Tom Morello, one of the ultimate in guitar playing trickiness.
Bruce, Steven, Tom...Italian blood in roots... AMAZING MASTERPIECE
I get goosebumps watching these guys even after 15 years (2024). Amazing music!! ❤❤
After a decade this is still one if the best live performances I've ever seen and probably my favourite guitar solo ever!

Did you see lindsay buckingham go insane live 2008 texas. That has to be up there.
So afraid sorry. Not go insane although that is good too. So afraid :)
2:34 that’s why he’s the boss.
You mean because he encouraged Tom to go singing right?
Tom Morello melted my face off, and I loved it.
A great privilege to live in the time when Bruce Springsteen lived! How awesome is this universe, how lucky am I!
One of the best rock performances I've ever seen.

How can anyone put thumbs down. Open your eyes n ears.

What a monster Tom Morelolo is on the guitar, he mix everthing up...he does shredd..he does those crazy effects...pretty pretty nice
Bruce Springsteen solos with the strength and passion of a Norwegian lumberjack and alongside Tom Morello solos with the ease of a Canadian skater in a triple Tulupa On one stage! Beautiful !
4 lines to summarize the meeting of three guitarists for 9 minutes. Simple - Effective - Fast...
Could never find something better.this is I swear the best .
