So do I, being from a maritime family, I grew up with three island cargo liners, real passenger liners and amongst the sometimes charming tramp steamers. The graduation to bulk carriers and container ships which still held their own fascination, though much fewer crews and a Cheif Officer no longer leaning over hatch covers and railings, but sitting in his off, juggling the placement of 20’ & 40’ boxes and reefers using a computer in his office. Quick turnaround times and fewer crew. The Customs Officers, Harbour Officials and Agents still expected plenty of liquid refreshment, but didn’t hang around as long. Capt. A.R. Dyason
Cunard was once again saved from demise when Carnival Corp. purchased the company in 1998. Because of this, QE2 did, in fact, continue to ply the Atlantic as well as the other six seas through most of the first decade of the 21st Century. On 27 November 2008, QE2 was retired from active Cunard service after having logged 5.6 million miles, carried 2.5 million passengers and completed 806 transatlantic crossings. QE2 was the longest serving Cunarder in the company's 168 year history, having sailed for over 50 years with the company. Soon after her retirement, QE2 was acquired by Dubai to become a floating hotel (which she has since become). Queen Mary 2, the last Transatlantic liner built, replaced QE2 in 2004 as the company's flagship and, since 2019, Cunard remains the only shipping company to operate a regularly scheduled passenger service between Europe and North America. In my humble opinion, Queen Mary 2 is the perfect synthesis of all the best of the great liners of the past with the technology of today. She proudly continues to carry on the generous maritime traditions of the old great ladies of the Atlantic!
The reverse. If Carnival had saved Cunard the QE2 would have been scrapped years ago. Cunard was a one dog pony show. No one other buyer was interested. Without Carnival there would be no QM2.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I have been a maritime historian specializing in the Titanic ever since I was 6 years old and saw a Ken Marschall painting of the ship sinking. I knew that I was going to spend the rest of my life obsessing over these liners, and ships in general.
I was born in 1983, so I was born way too late for the ocean going ships, but I have been on a Royal Caribbean seven day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on the MS Grandeur of the Seas on it's 50th voyage and it was such a good trip. We stayed in a suite on the port side stern of the ship with a balcony and two bedrooms with a living room. I was invited up to the bridge and had my picture taken wearing the captain's hat at the "wheel" of the ship. I also saw the SS Norway (former SS France) docked in Miami at the time, and she also passed us while I was standing on the bridge of the Grandeur. The Grandeur was an absolutely beautiful ship and I spent most of my time exploring the engineering spaces of the ship. Now that I am an adult I hope to take my family on the Oasis Class ships someday soon. Maybe even someday see the great new Queen Mary 2. My wife and I spent our honeymoon onboard the RMS Queen Mary and we had a great time. It was so special.
I wish the production company that made this video could have decided to have either annoying soundtrack only, or interesting narration only. Thanks for posting this. I learnt something from it!
Patrick allen narrated many programmes and documentaries. This was the fella who flew around in a helicopter advertising Barret homes in the early/ mid 1980s . Perhaps his most well known/infamous narrative was when he was commissioned by the Government to narrate the documentary about what to do in the event of a nuclear war. This was used and universally recognised in the " Frankie goes to Hollywood" single " when two tribes go to war " . I certainly hope we never have to take Allens instructions literally !!l

Well I’ll be damned! Scottish? I was under the impression that I K Brunel was the son of Marc Brunel, a Frenchman who devised a tunnelling rig that is in principle still used today. Isambard K. was a highly intelligent and hard working engineer wo did study in France, and applied his talents to civil, marine and railway engineers. He also showed remarkable talent in n architecture as well.
At 25:27 we can appreciate the Bridge of Quebec. Quebec City would welcome the nicest ocean liners now and then. The Ile-the-France diner room was copied for the luxury restaurant by Eaton in Montreal. It was so beautiful with its Art-Deco.
None of these liner movies ever mention the SS France of 1912. Only French 4 stacker, and immensely beautiful interiors. Everyone obsesses about Titanic, mostly just because of her sinking. Otherwise, there was nothing uniquely special about her.
Thank you for mentioning that absolute jewel of a ship. SS France of 1912 had a such an exquisite design- she looks very sleek and modern for her time. Her interiors were magnificent, being often compared to the palace at Versailles. What isn't often mentioned is her speed- she could leave most other liners of the time in her wake. Only Mauretania and Lusitania were faster.
I do wish they had shown a little more of the 2nd and 3rd class accomodations. It was them that made the money, after all. Also the choice of music is excreable.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born in Portsmouth to a French father and English mother. The family moved to London and he was schooled in Hove, then Paris. Not sure how any of that qualifies him as Scottish 😂

i hear and see always luxury liners, 7* all the time, and from the looks of it, in the owner's cabin one even gets his backside wiped with warm towels. but not once has anyone shown how the CREW lives, how many hours they have to work.and under what conditions. sure, - no one is forcing them -. and - they all can go back home and have a vacation after a cruise -. since i have worked on ships, you would NEVER get me on one of those luxury Noro Voris Carriers, even if they pay me...

I'm happy folks of moderest means were able to experience and enjoy this prestigious and luxurious style of travel, but there's something about the floating behemoths losing their class status that me bothers me. Picture a view of a grand ballroom with people roaming around dressed in sneakers, jeans and tank tops ? It seems a disgrace against the craftsmen ship and spectacular decor . I'm certainly from lower,modest means, so it's not from any snobbish bias I feel this way, lol...I suppose it's the regret of losing a bygone era . Oh well, I truly enjoy all these documentary about this time period that is gone forever ,greatly appreciate the efforts to provide this entertainment.
if only titanic sank and not britannic, it would probably been not too big of a problem. the titanic disaster was a massive financial blow to the white star line, but it also helped the ships of the time to make safety improvements, lord kylsant was the main reason white star was lost.
The ship is getting old and boring for all 3 ships. Just came back from 16 days Cunard. It degraded a lot. food quality and quantity BAD, no lobster. especially at the Lido. Super short handed. It is at the Carnival cruise style. No dance host, no queens room Hostess, no professional dancer exhibition, 8 kids running around in the dance floor while dancing, etc. will not recommend for this price (we are Diamond on Cunard, not a newbie)

I can never afford to ever ply the ocean waves on a liner or a cruise ship, so please just quit this arrogant pomposity. This very video has stated that so many of these great behemoths have come to a bad end anyway. And, mark my words, the towering height and way-oversized cruise ships will all, sooner or later, capsize by rogue waves or, at the very least, become gigantic virus-ridden coffin-rigs on which no one would want to be confined. QE2 sailed for Cunard for just under 40 years; May 1969 to November 2008.

just a note, the QE2 is named for the Queen. Not the older ship, that was named after her mother who was Queen Elizabeth.
This was the time when we had beautiful,long, sleek ships. Now we see nothing but ugly, bulky monstrosities.
