I think this is a really nice video for being able to hear the difference in sound between the different headphones - big thumbs up for that! Would love to have a T1 and the D7000 thrown in there :)
You got top of the line contenders for Dynamic & Planar headphones, but not quite so for Electrostatic...but I wouldn't blame you, that would run you about $10,000 with the Stax Sr-009 and it's required amp.
If anyone is listening to this through descent headphones you can hear the amazing instrument isolation coming from these brilliant headphones. God I can only imagine what it sounds like on your ears and not through TH-cam.
Whatever sounds best on my ears is what I will listen to...plain and simple. The Sennheiser has always been an industry leader. So bearing this in mind, it is will be a battle between the HD700's and the HD 650's as I have no intention of wasting my money on the 1/2% improvement the 800's may impart. Bear in mind, my audio system (it's getting old) is all Levinson and MIT...and I am just worn out by the incremental gains. Thanks for your input, I learned a lot.
Could you comment on the differences in trable and bass between HD800 and SR-407? I dont mean quantity but quality (Speed and decay in bass, harsh-free and detailed in treble).
I am happy with my tea one, can't be bothered messing around with all the other brands are there I know it's best to find your own sound but around the same price range then not going to sound better just different, currently I'm saving up for the top stacks model which will obviously give me a better sound quality, I feel this is the best option
Wow, that's a tall order! At first I didn't like the HD 650's, but after a while they really grew on me. If HE-400 tops that, then they must be something really special! :D Now you've got me really excited, thanks! Hahahaha
Which one do you like best? Love the smooth, liquid sound Stax sound, but also love the masculine, solid sound of the LCD-2 and the soundstage openess/precision of the HD 800. By the way, what music am I hearing throughout the video? :)
No studio uses these headphones or any higher end ones for production, they use ~$150-200 headphones designed for monitoring, and that's only for intensive checking, speakers are used for everything else. Also as others have said, they're open backed for a reason, if anything reflects the backwave it'll interfere with the frontwave, causing odd colorations and resonances, and due to the time difference, it'll mess with the audio's spatial cues, causing mushy imaging and loss of soundstage.
thanks you help me a lot, i will get the lcd 2 for eletronica but for modern rock and bands like red hot chilli peppers and AC/DC which is better? i read some reviews that say the lyr is
I actually just sold the HA160D, to move up to either Mjolnir, WA2/WA22 or Apex Peak with Volcano. I just can't make up my mind, because the cost of tubes makes me stay away from woo amps. What's your opinion?
Nice! Yeah, there are tons of pleasure in this hobby, haha. Sure you can :) I don't have any STAX yet. Currently I've got a Woo Audio WA6-SE and a ton of tubes, also waiting for a WA22. SS is Grace Design m903 and (hold your breathe) Asus Xonar Essence One, which I actually like a lot! Getting some opamps tomorrow, so that'll be a fun tweaking project. :))) Do you have anything good besides Burson? :D
the 160D includes a DAC that is on par if not better than the Schiit Bifrost, was re fenced with the LCD-2 and HD650 so that guarantees some good synergy. If you want a Schiit product, the Schiit Mjolnir has better synergy with LCD-2 than Lyr, and last i checked the Lyr was blowing out drivers in people's headphones.
I agree, not many studio producers would use these headphones when producing, they normally use speakers, but let's get real, their speaker set-up are like $50,000 or more.
I would give the HE-400 a shot, but if you want a more treble toned and sort of darker version of LCD-2 give the HE-500 a shot. They are both terrific headphones IMO.
Which one of these is ur favourite? Do u prefer Stax over lcd2 and hd800? Also, help me to decide between these headphone(LCD x, LCD 3, HD800, SR407) .
***** I am talking about new sennheiser hd 800S THAT fixes the treble of hd 800 yet still offering great detail, resolution and way better soundstage and imaging than stax 009.
***** the hd 800S is also more comfortable but the fact is the diminishing returns will be very high once you go above hd 800S.Also innerfidelity also prefers soundstage, imaging and resolution of hd 800S over sr 009.Well 009 is definitely better but can you recommend me any other headphones under 3000$ to even come close to hd 800S?Also a guy said that schiit mjolnir 2 reduces the soundstage of hd 800S or hd 800 is this true? Also does Balanced cable improve the quality of sound over regular cables?
sorry to disturb you agsin but i may buy stax 009,but i dont want to spend more than 2000$ on amps, will woo audio ges do them justice or stax 007 is a better option?
i also made comparison in listening of SR407 and HD800 yesterday, both SR407 and HD800 are bright on treble. For listening to symphony and classical, the HD800 is the only way to go, wide stage and not over exaggerated details, good imaging. The SR407 been typical electrostatic headphone amplified many recording flaw and details i.e people breathing, adjusting sit positions etc to your ears, plus with relatively narrower sound stage make you feel you are sitting inside the symphony band not on audience's seat. However if you use SR407 for listening to contemporary and rock it's actually better than HD800.
Hi, I'm about to get a HA-160D and a HD800 (both very expensive so I have to choose wisely), I listen to trance almost exclusively, and a bit of classical. Is a good combo? I currently own a HE-400 without amp nor DAC, plugged directly on a MBP. Is the LCD-2 a better choice? Should I be getting something like Bifrost+Lyr o Gungnir+Mjolnir?
STAX, sounds the most natural and transparent - although it is the cheapest headphones from this test. STAX SR 507 had to be used in an approximate model from the same league as Audeze and Sennheiser HD 800 (which cost double or triple compared to SR 407).
Yeah, even if you look at their respective websites and news articles, very few studios and artists use them. Most studios aren't putting as much effort in anymore, just compress it and pump up the volume. I think the HD800s were being used in one maybe two of the studios remastering and re-releasing High definition classical. A handful of artists use them, though their sound engineers don't lol.
theodoro89 As far as I know, when it comes to sound stage the HD800s are by far the widest, the most impressive especially in classical and trailer music, even the Stax SR-009 is no match for it. I cant think of any headphone that come close, let alone go wider.
So what you're saying is that HiFiMAN HE-400 is good value even though you own both LCD-2? I have a ton of headphones, like T1, LCD-2, LCD-3, HD 650, HD 600, D7000 ... and I've not yet ventured into HiFiMAN. I'm not a huge fan of neutral, so HE-400 is a definite go, even with my lineup?
Firstly, not heard any of those yet. I recently got WA2 (not WA22) to pair it up with T1 as I hear that is phenomenal. I might sell WA6-SE to go fully balanced with WA22, but as you say: Tubes get expensive. :( Secondly, I hear good things about LCD-3 and Schiit Mjolnir and Gungnir combo, but that's just based on one guy's opinion in the Norwegian niche forums. I did try the Gungnir DAC with WA6-SE shortly, but couldn't tell the difference between that and the DAC in m903 to be honest.
@derbigpr500 Yeah they are are way beyond their prime for sure. But they still possess some great qualities, like neutrality, soundstage openness and midrange clarity
No problem, I just love telling people about how amazing the HE-400's were when I put them on for the first time. It was like the first time wearing my LCD-2's, just breath taking. If I may ask, what amplifier and DAC do you use with all these lovely headphones? I take it you have several considering the Stax, LCD-2 and T1.
They definitely have the cleanest sound. I personally would take the Stax over the others, but the HD800 is phenomenal also. The Audeze is not quite in the same class IMO as the other two. You would have to listen to both (on your head) to truly pick your favorite.
I prefer the Stax, way more detailed than the other 2 (and a lot cheaper too) I know that maybe the other 2 are more "fun" to listen, but for mixing and mastering duties the Stax are the way to go
HAHAHAHA, as figured, there are no clear answers in this hobby... Darker and more treble toned doesn't sound so exciting though, so thanks! :D The HE-400 sure sounds exciting and fun from what I've read, so I'll get that first :)
Some use expensive headphones, a lot of classical music engineers use Sennheiser HD650's as a reference when mastering or recording, as well as binaural music studios. But most don't use high end headphones because: 1) they're open back headphones, therefore as far away from "studio" headphones as possible in most situations. 2) they're too expensive, fragile, and would just be a pain in the ass to work with in the studio. 3) most studios create music for speakers, so they use speakers.
No i actually listened to the STAX when my friend got it, but you know what maybe if the headphone was burned in for about 300 hours it would have not been bright.
Nice video! I would have liked to see the K1000's in there as well. I think the Beats by Dre Studio headphones win for sound leakage from a closed, ANC headphone. I seriously don't know how that happened and it's pretty pathetic to be honest.
All these headphones sound a lot different to what is portrayed in this video when you actually wear them. The Sennheiser HD800s are not even close to shrilly. The camera is put 60cm away (stated in video) and the headphones are not designed to beam the wave front outwards thus why it will sound a lot different when you wear them (obviously).
I love how everyone keeps saying "Studio use" but i've never been to a studio that uses them... the only studio reference headphone i know is the MDR-7506... and that's it. I doubt you'll see a mixing eng. using a pair of HD800 for mixing (that's what speakers are for).
Nice video Anh Luu. I see all the negative comments and thumb down from jealous people. Good headphone collection. It seems SR407 a little too bright though.
***** Hah, what? Those two headphones don't sound very alike at all. The closest you're gonna get to the HD 800 without emptying your wallet is probably the AKG K702 or Beyerdynamic DT 880
Cans from stax(especially Lambda series) leak more highs than lows or mids on graph. So if you actually try them in real life, you may have different impression. :)
Did you really make that conclusion from the sound leaking of a headphone going trough 2 variables (microphone and your headphones) played from youtube video witch is compressed horribly.
Wouldn't it be more practical to measure the leakage with the phones on somebody's head? That way you would hear more or less "real" leakage depending on how good the phones seal.
How is this valid? There is nothing blocking the inside of the headphones...Leakage refers to the sound that can be heard externally to other people while you're actually wearing the headphones.
For Electronica, the LCD-2 will have better bass and more bass than the HD800 by a far margin. Rock, hmm, if you listen to acoustic, you'll lose the HD800. What I love about my 160D is that is drives the HD800, LCD-2 and Beyerdynamic T1 all so fluid and smooth. The HA160D even has a DAC in it, and a damn good one too. I love the synergy I get with the 160D and LCD-2. HE500 and HE6 from Hifiman are almost as good as LCD-2 but have less bass and are too neutral for my tastes, but HE-400 is great.
Dude. This is not the correct way to measure headphone leakage. You need to measure it with the headphones mounted on a head-torso simulator so you simulate the proper headphone seal on the head. You also have to ensure the headphones are level-matched so the differences are measure aren't related to sensitivity differences. As someone pointed out, these are open-back headphones are designed intentionally to have leakage.
@Satfgk People are forgetting that K1000's are very old headphones, and nowhere near as good as they used to be in their prime. Compared to modern headphones like in this video, K1000's don't stand a chance overall. .
I don't think they are actually. I've done my own comparisons and the leakage doesn't really tell you much about how they actually sound. Also, I don't think te Sens are as hot as people put on. I think their just more revealing
I understand and agree that it can be used portable. But the main purpose is in studio use. Hence your "hard to drive a bit though" statement. because you would need to carry that big ass amp haha. But I'm only talking about the hd800. I don't know much about the Audeze. But i'll look it up right now. Later dude.
Well, I know why the LCD2 is the Prince of Darkness. The treble is only 1/4 as bright as the HD800 or Stax. I know what I'm getting as to complement my Q701 now.
***** I can wait for summit-fi gear. My next hurdle will be getting a new amp and DAC. I currently only have a Modi/Magni setup and will be moving up to the Lyr2 and idk about what the DAC will be.
***** that's good to know, but I'm still really itching to get a new set of cans, so I doubt I'll be able to wait until March-ish to get the LCD-X or LCD-3's. I'm moving to Bozeman soon anyway, so I'll be able to try multiple headphones at Headroom.
just wondering, shouldn't leak test be done placing the headphone on a dummy head or something?
Thank you for making this video. I am somewhat surprised that no one else has thought of making one like it.
I think this is a really nice video for being able to hear the difference in sound between the different headphones - big thumbs up for that! Would love to have a T1 and the D7000 thrown in there :)

You know when Sennheiser puts out an £800+ set of headphones they're going to be good.
Wow, that's a tall order! At first I didn't like the HD 650's, but after a while they really grew on me. If HE-400 tops that, then they must be something really special! :D Now you've got me really excited, thanks! Hahahaha

somehow ... even just over a computer speaker you can tell the stax just has a LOT more body and integrates the sound better
Stax just sounds impossibly real while the other ones sound like music is playing out of a walkie-talkie.
Nice, hows those Stax tcompare to the other 2

theodoro89 AKG k1000 perhaps. Stax Sigma trade blows IMO. HD800 still wins in imaging.
Wow. Now I know why people are saying the HD 800's treble is too hot and they're bright headphones. You can clearly hear it on this video.
hey please help me for rock, acustic and eletronic which this is better?

The HE-400 sure sounds exciting and fun from what I've read, so I'll get that first :)
I see the Stax are the ones that leak the most sound, because they're the ones that have the clearer sound, does that mean they're the best?
Some use expensive headphones, a lot of classical music engineers use Sennheiser HD650's as a reference when mastering or recording, as well as binaural music studios. The Sennheiser's sound warmer than the others
I don't think this video was made with intention to point out that as a bad thing. It's a nice video and not everyone knows what open design is.
@ThePsionicMatrixTM They do have an overly aggressive treble which has to be tamed, then they are nice :)
No i actually listened to the STAX when my friend got it, but you know what maybe if the headphone was burned in for about 300 hours it would have not been bright.

They can be used portably, at least the Audeze can and the HD800 is second to that (Hard to drive a bit though)
did you like the lcd 2 with the auditor?
how you compare the lcd 2 with the others two?
Tears in your eyes. Is is that bad? Highs sound pretty loud especially in the last song.
The STAX sound kinda bright, from my experience i would choose the HD800 over the 2.
The Stax has less high frequency leakage, correct?
What is that decibel meter software you are running on your iPod?
Akg k1000 is my best, but hd800' sound is pretty good!
Yes the SR-407 is indeed the brightest of the bunch.
Cans from stax(especially Lambda series) leak more highs than lows or mids on graph. So if you actually try them in real life, you may have different impression. :)
Ikari.
agree you can't judge from leaked sound.
but yeah HD800 has loudest leak, 407 has the least sound leak, LCD-2 sits somewhere in middle.
Hey how come?
I always wondered why they never used some of the best headphones in the world? Why don't they use them?
Honestly for rock I would recommend HE-500, but for electronica, the LCD-2 is almost impossible to beat.
Stax sound awesome.
most of these are open back headphones , why would you test sound leakage???
Are you hooked into an Amplifier somewhere in the background?
I love mine with the Burson HA160D.
You won't be disappointed. In fact, I like the HE-400 about 10 times more than the so called "legendary HD650 LOL".
It's only leakage if you cover up the earpads.
which amp you use with the lcd 2 ?
@pumbaa32 What amp are you using?
I would take the stax they seem to have the most detail.
Did you really make that conclusion from the sound leaking of a headphone going trough 2 variables (microphone and your headphones) played from youtube video witch is compressed horribly.
What volume is this? Seems pretty loud!
Close to 100dB between drivers as stated at the beginning of the video, yes it is loud :)
Yup you're gonna get fucking tinnitus good job.
Wouldn't it be more practical to measure the leakage with the phones on somebody's head? That way you would hear more or less "real" leakage depending on how good the phones seal.
the audeze lcd2 is almost a combination of both
I thought it was just me who heard that. Crap. So much for my 800s.
How is this valid? There is nothing blocking the inside of the headphones...Leakage refers to the sound that can be heard externally to other people while you're actually wearing the headphones.
Obviously you never came in contact with any of Stax headphones.
For Electronica, the LCD-2 will have better bass and more bass than the HD800 by a far margin. Rock, hmm, if you listen to acoustic, you'll lose the HD800. how can you even tell by listening through this video.
How do you know he isn't an audiophile?
I want the hd800
Are the songs played MP3 files?
Or WAV? FLAC?
Dude. This is not the correct way to measure headphone leakage. You need to measure it with the headphones mounted on a head-torso simulator so you simulate the proper headphone seal on the head. As someone pointed out, these are open-back headphones are designed intentionally to have leakage.
@Satfgk People are forgetting that K1000's are very old headphones, and nowhere near as good as they used to be in their prime. Compared to modern headphones like in this video, K1000's don't stand a chance overall. .
what is the song of the piano!
What amps where used?
Why the dislikes ? is it because you cant buy them?
they are not for music production they are more for audiophile in my opinion
I don't think they are actually. I've done my own comparisons and the leakage doesn't really tell you much about how they actually sound.
Also, I don't think te Sens are as hot as people put on. I think their just more revealing
Intro song? please
I meant WA2!
On this video Stax sounds best to me. :P
why not use a dummy head to have the headphones on and do a leak test correctly
totally agree, this makes no sense... a closed can will leak like this
+lillskiten1337 exactly what I was thinking..
Great video!
Upload more headphone content if you can! :D
I understand and agree that it can be used portable. But the main purpose is in studio use. Hence your "hard to drive a bit though" statement. because you would need to carry that big ass amp haha. But I'm only talking about the hd800. I don't know much about the Audeze. But i'll look it up right now. Later dude.
Who's the artist playing at around 5:19?
I'm pretty sure he knows this. All he's trying to do is show you how much they leak, in case you're curious. No need to freak out.
Well, I know why the LCD2 is the Prince of Darkness. The treble is only 1/4 as bright as the HD800 or Stax. I know what I'm getting as to complement my Q701 now.
***** another $700-$1000 just isn't doable on my budget
***** I can wait for summit-fi gear. My next hurdle will be getting a new amp and DAC. I currently only have a Modi/Magni setup and will be moving up to the Lyr2 and idk about what the DAC will be.
***** that's good to know, but I'm still really itching to get a new set of cans, so I doubt I'll be able to wait until March-ish to get the LCD-X or LCD-3's. I'm moving to Bozeman soon anyway, so I'll be able to try multiple headphones at Headroom.
