    This is a quote directly from Guardian (the makers of the caps): "Researchers have not reached an agreement on how the results of impact absorption tests relate to concussions. No conclusions about a reduction of risk or severity of concussive injury should be drawn from impact absorption tests."
    And from another independent study: "A 2023 study published in the International Journal of Research and Public Health found no difference in the forces experienced by players wearing Guardian Caps and those who did not."

      These results are incomplete. Only a handful of players have actually worn them in a game. And no quarterbacks have worn them. That’s the only way they will know how the guardian cap works is under real football conditions. It will do no harm for Tua to wear it.

    • @rojoloco
      @rojoloco 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@shackdaddy7106 In the independent study, they conducted 1,000 different impact tests and found no difference. While it may not do Tua any harm to wear it (though some players complain about the added weight and size), there's also no evidence it will have any net benefit. Therefore, the advocates of Tua wearing one are really coming from a place of "but something must be done" rather than coming from a place of "follow the data and make an informed decision."

    The guardian cap does not prevent concussions. It does not stop the sudden acceleration and deceleration of the brain within the skull. It's simply a way for the NFL to avoid future lawsuits. The NFL will claim that preventative options were available but players chose not to use it.

    • @DRay23322

      Exactly. I’m shocked at the amount of people (even someone like Rich, who is usually a pretty careful, researched broadcaster) don’t know this. No matter how much “cushion” someone has on their head, the brain is almost literally floating in the skull, and will always smash against it in these collisions.

    The Miami Dolphins have more than a "Tua Issue". They have a GM issue, which is one of the worst in the NFL. Steve Ross NEEDS to fire GM Chris Grier and hire somebody that has a decent track record of drafting good personnel all the while evaluating HC Mike McDaniel and maybe if nothing else get that HC a OC that can call better plays. They're guilty of not having a competent backup when you have a starting QB who has a record of head injury. The Jets have Tyrod for Rodgers. The Colts have Flacco for AR. The Panthers have Dalton for Bryce. The Chiefs have Wentz for Mahomes etc. You find a guy who was "a guy" 5 years ago, a known quantity, and put them in so you can still be competitive. • @mt_baldwin
    @mt_baldwin 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +18

    Wanting him to wear one is for YOUR comfort and not for his protection. Look up why they aren't mandated and you'll see why this question is absolutely ridiculous. I suppose I can walk you through it. For one, they ARE mandated. So why don't we see them then? Because players can be exempt from wearing one (here's the key point) if they choose to wear one of 6 alternative designs that offer EQUAL or GREATER protections than the guardian cap. So Tua is already wearing a helmet that is either just as good or even better than the guardian cap helmet. So why is he still getting concussions? Because helmets don't do jackshit to stop concussions, regardless of what the NFL's "studies" say (which I'm sure are totally legit studies), and football is a violent sport.
    Look, if you feel uncomfortable or guilty watching a violent sport, then watch another less violent one instead. Forcing a player to wearing a helmet that doesn't help more than the one he's already wearing isn't the answer to this.

I played offensive guard for 6 years throughout school and having that extra padding on the outside of the helmet doesn’t seem like it’d be much a hindrance at all in game. But I obviously was never pro, so what do i know. I just remember having a 60 minute wrestling match with defensive linemen & pass rushers and even just playing guard, I’d have some headaches after games. It’s like putting a helmet on and repeatedly knocking your own head against a brick wall. Even if it ain’t hard, it’s nonstop and takes an effect.

    I am just not surprised at how he sounds in that presser. I’ve read ”he sounds arrogant”. ”he sounds annoyed when people just are worried and care for him not becoming an aggressive/confused/personality changed 40 year old due to brain trauma symptoms”.
    You just have to google three words to know why he might sound annoyed, macho, a bit out there: Tua + dad + belt.
    He literally have told us himself that his Dad from when he was a kid saw him as the ”family business” where the goal was to get him to the NFL since his brother was already not making it. And how he used to beat him with a belt when he was training on the beach with him, and he did not run right, messed up in a workout.
    I mean what do we expect now then with a father like that hovering close by, and a whole family that sees him as their ”family business”. To be honest. I would not be surprised if in a few months, a year, we see Tua in a position on the field where he cramps up in his hands and wrists from a hit that doesn’t even look that bad to the naked eye. And if he gets messed up, those people, like his Dad. Will never have the self awereness, ability to reflect over how their ways shaped him, to see they contributed alot to why it ended up in tragedy. People like that will always rationalize why they are not to blame or had a hand in it going off the rails. Unfortunately.
    And many will continue with the defense: ”Well, his Dad raised a winner, so….” Like that is a flex when the person either is dead or injured for life , because being a winner (or make everyone money) is more important than anything.

      No one should be belittling Tua. And I don't think that's what's going on here. If they guy wants to play football, he's gonna play football. But it's not wrong for Rich and crew to express concern over his choices and their potential long term ramifications.
      What we can say though, is it's foolish to return to football and not make some effort to reduce the risk of future complications by simply wearing the guardian cap. It's akin to me seeing folks riding their motorcycles in PA without helmets. Any chance you have to reduce the risk of long term impacts, it's foolish not to take. Note, I didn't say Tua is a fool. He loves football. I said, it is foolish to not wear the guardian cap.

      @@ericbaker8807 great comments, and for me to say belittling wasn't the right word. Rich was showing concern for sure. It was Brockman's delivery that I took issue with. He was framing it as it's uncomfortable for him to watch; so Tua shouldn't play. I know that wasn't exactly what Chris was saying and that he cares for two of as does Rich. It was just how it was an inconvenience for him more than it was about the player.
      I see it here in Florida all the time and understand in the summer it's difficult but I always wear a helmet. The motorcycle instructor to get my permit when I was younger described it as a ladder. Some people are comfortable on the first rung. Some people are comfortable on the highest run, just depends on the risk they're willing to take.

    Tua is the one who initiated contact the last time he was on the field - at the cost of his team, as he had to have known the dire state of the QB room backing him up. While that wasn't his intent, it was a crap decision on his part. The only good thing to have come out of this is it's displaying for everyone to see, just how poorly the front office/HC have done in building a complete roster, as well as the unwillingness/inability to adapt to the given situation.
    All his return can do is hurt the draft possibilities for the team next year, as it's clear they have no shot at overcoming the better teams in the league - just like the last 2 seasons.
    And yes, as a fan of the team for 43 years now, it pains me to say these things; but barring something that goes against how this team has been run the last few years, I'm kind of done with the current regime.

      Conversely, if you want less head injury overall, remove all padding, like rugby. And also like rugby, severely penalize not wrapping up (yes, that's a penalty in rugby, you cannot shoulder check someone) and hits to the head you miss a game or 3 (red card). Rugby has a lot of injuries, but way less head trauma than football. Its mainly broken bones, bruises, cuts, etc. No padding = proper tackling technique and you're not just leading with your head. Helmets give that false sense of security to players.
      I'm a big rugby fan, and I do recognize its a different sport. Everything in rugby is in front of you. No cutbacks, no hospital passes over the middle. But their rules are written in blood.

    I don't see why more players don't wear these helmets. Or just have the league mandate that every player wears it end of debate. If it would significantly reduce head injuries then start mandating it and also do it from the youngest leagues in up. The 2 largest money makers from football NCAA and NFL can set up a fund to supply all youth leagues and highschools that would need the funding. Doesn't have to happen overnight but they can each donate 5-10 million a year to get this done. Until each school and youth league has been supplied with these helmets. Along with all college and NFL teams. Players might push back but as we all have heard sometimes you have to protect players from themselves at times.
