He was due to make just over $9 million in 2024 with Tennessee, the last year of his contract, with an option year in 2025. Haven't seen any reports on what the buyout of his last year was or if the Browns contributed to that. If it’s not his fault, who’s is it? Someone who reports to him? If we’re blaming the DC, he reports to the HC, so I don’t really understand what we’re talking about here.

  • @stolve8847

Both Mayo and Belichick kinda have a point. Belichick did not leave him with a great roster, on either side of the ball. However, Bill was able to coach that group into one of the best defenses in the league. It's unreasonable to expect anyone to be as good a DC as Bill, and if New England ownership or fans didn't think the defense would take a huge step back without Bill (regardless of who his replacement was) they were delusional.

Hindsight is 20/20, but if there was any thought that the defense couldn't be as good without Bill, then it wouldn't have made sense to fire him. He whiffed on a QB after losing his OC, but still had a really good defense. Like Rich said, hard to be a good coach without a QB. Good luck to the Mayo and the Pats moving forward but it looks like a mistake right now.

To use BB's own words, every year it's a different team. You can bring back 95% of the players but you'll still have a different team than last year. Why? It's not just the players. It's the coaches. It's the player's mindsets. It's the upper management. It's the nutritionists. Etc.
Having said that I know BB's plethora of coaching acumen could have turned at least one of the losses this year into a win. It wouldn't have turned the team into a playoff team, but it would've won them a few more overall.
Mayo is a new HC with an experienced but not outstanding staff, and a team learning a new system while in rebuild mode. If anyone expected them to be world beaters are sorely mistaken.

@@RyanM-d4m Last year, the Buffalo Bills were down to their fifth and sixth string cornerbacks, and sixth and seventh string linebackers starting the game. The Bills starting defensive play caller through the playoffs was a retired player who they had to beg to come out of retirement, with over over half of their entire teams salary cap being out for the season on the defensive side of the ball alone. They had a good coach who was capable of coaching those guys up into a unit that, despite being held together with duct tape and super glue, was capable of making big plays, bringing Kansas City down to the wire, where they only lost due to a missed field goal. Bill was a fantastic coach, and while I do not solely blame Mayo, there is no doubt in my mind that Bill was an absolute defensive coaching genius. He could take nobodies and make them into stars, utilizing their unrecognized talents. That is something that he and McDermott actually have in common.
My point was also less about it being Mayo's fault, and more about Belichick just being a better coach who would've handled the injuries better. Belichick did pretty well with a quarterback-less team for a few years there, and booting him was a huge gift to the rest of the division.

I suspect that this whole clause in Mayo's contract to succeed as head coach was just thrown in to get him to agree to less money or something like that. They likely assumed at the time that Bill wasn't going anywhere so putting such a clause in an assistant coach's contract was effectively meaningless. Then when they parted ways with Belichick, Mayo brought up the clause and they realized they messed up and would have to adhere to it or pay him out. But then they also probably realized that going with an inexperienced coach would be a great way to tank for a good draft position, without said coach being aware that they were actually tanking, so they went forward with it.

This isn't about soft players, it's about the D being easy for the opposition to push back - even in the simple act of collision our guys are getting pushed backwards. When the jags D tackled our players our O got pushed backwards. Their D played tough, our D played soft. We're all tired of Kraft's and Mayo's excuses. Implying roster problems is pathetic. They had a ton of cap space and the Patriots chose to resign almost all their own free agents (other than Judon) instead of bringing in new players. They still had more cap space left than anyone that they chose not to spend to bring in anyone. Belichick wouldn't even have done that, he never did. He always kept the players he wanted at the right price and went out and brought in players he liked from other teams. Some of the best players the Pats had were Belichick free agent signings. Bill was always looking to improve the roster every year. Kraft's new group is the one decided to just bring everyone back from a 4 win team and give most all of them healthy raises. This is all Kraft's team now, no other way to look at it.

Bill could’ve had cam Newton and zeke Elliot on the same team. Ik they’re old, but for his time playing in 4 years… 7 wins wasn’t bad coming from cam…

Well you can't expect the defense to hold up for crying out loud it's the offense that is killing the defense as soon as the defense gets off the field there back on in 4 minutes.

it could be worse. They could still have BB in there completely ruining the team. I don't think I've ever seen a worse talent evaluator in the history of the league. Belichick passed on deebo and aj brown for NKEAL HARRY lmaooo

As much as I am a huge bb fan, I gotta say he’s wrong here… in the middle of this current defense we have lost 3 capt at all 3 levels.. barmore, Bentley and peppers.. all three of those doods are run thumpers.. yes its mayos job to have backups ready but they are backups for a reason.. this defense is soft for two reasons… loss of ur 3 capt, and coaches not having players ready or a scheme to help players. But the doods that played last game are soft, just like their dei coach.

Mayo is just trying to call certain players out but that’s not good. Cuz these guys were coached personally by BB the GOAT. Now that he’s come to their aid that Defense is probably gonna flat out quit in Mayo to show him the door

NE only gonna win 2-4 games this season and Mayo is not a Head Coach. The longer NE stays w him the longer they are gonna be bad. He isn’t the only problem but he is making things much worse.

Mac jones is a dreadful QB and is too SOFT to be an NFL QB! He plays scared and the defenses could smell it, like a dog smells fear. mac will be nothing more than a 2nd/3rd string bench warmer for the rest of his pitiful career!

Wow, Bill of all people wants to reference last years top ranked defense, when this coach’s MO was “last year doesn’t matter”. How convenient now to all of a sudden have relative perspective now that you’re out of the game. What good does his comments, being the former coach, do for Mayo’s locker room?? I’m convinced that nothing would make Bill happier than full anarchy at 1 Patriot Place.

Bill's offense has sucked for years. I didn't see Brady saying anything like that after he left 😂
Every other player Bill drafted was garbage. He could pick a db but nothing else.
Let me tell ya another thing, NOBODY brought Mike in. Vrabel has a record of .45 or something. He's not much better than Bill was without Brady

True, they had a bunch of quick possesions last year too, but they ran the ball way better than they have so far this year. A three and out after a minute and thirty seconds is not the same as three to five minutes

When will we stop accepting talking heads trying to convince us was and is are the same thing. Yes Bill, we get it, they "were" tough when you coached (was) them. But currently, in the now (is) they're playing soft af. Opening your wrists for how they used to play benefits absolutely no one. Jesus Christ can we get any fucking accountability??? Who would have thought, sportscasters, are soft
