- I just read 'A Discovery of Witches' by Deborah Harkness and I absolutely loved it! I do hope they make a film some time in the future, and if I had the power to cast it this would be my line-up :)
Also check out my casting vid for Shadow of Night ;) • Shadow of Night - My d...

I kept picturing Aidan Turner as Matthew de Clermont, but Richard Armitage would be great as well!
What a wonderful cast yours would be! ❤️
This is fantastic. Richard Armitage is exactly what I was in my head as Matthew.
I sooooo agree with Stockard Channing as Sarah! Sarah seems like one of the aunts in practical magic!
While reading the book, I always envisioned Jim Broadbent as Peter Knox - wow
This is PERFECT casting!!! looking forward to the movie!!
Brilliant casting. Especially Matthew!
NICE ......... i havent know about Deborah Harkness until i watched the trailer of DOw 2019
That's darn near perfect, love all your choices.
Vincent Cassel as Baldwin!!!! To speak frankly, I can't imagine someone better than him for the role!!! Bravo!! ;))
Such a superb line-up for the cast!!!
Ian watching the series and I do love the cast!
Excellent selections. Perfect!!!
Great selection! and pictures. Let me know when the film is ready. I am in ;)
Great choices!!!
I definitely agree! Just finished the book and yes those are the characters!
This list is absolutly perfect. Agree with everything. Brilliant!!
I love THIS!!!
Maybe it's my age, but I kept picturing a young Daniel Day-Lewis as Matthew. Handsome, charming, enigmatic, spooky at time. I couldn't quite picture Diana, a redhead, maybe Debra Messing on a serious day?
Wow - love the cast list; hope the real one is as good as yours...EXCELLENT!
a dream cast indeed!
This is really fitting for almost all of the characters, and I commend you on your excellent job, the one exception being Juliette Binoche as Marthe. Marthe is supposed to look sixty, and unless you're hoping there would be some awesome ageing makeup done on her, it doesn't really work.
Apart from that, really nicely chosen.
You're cast gave me chills trying to imagine what a film with these actors and this story would look like lol. Absolutely spot on. The only two that maybe didn't fit 100% to me were Juliette Binoche as Marthe and Adrian Brody at Gerbert. I pictured Gerbert as looking more portly than Adrian Brody. And slightly older. Maybe Jonathan Pryce? And Marthe I pictured as being a little more homely and matronly than Binoche is. Maybe Imelda Staunton? But I'm really nitpicking. Great choices!
Thanks for the comments, everyone :) I am thrilled that so many of you agreed with many of my choices! Now, two years later, and after having read the end of the saga, I have to say that you were right about Marthe and I also consider Diane Kruger to be an excellent Diana. I am planning on casting the final book as well and I am indeed letting Winslet go (though I do love her). In addition I will change Gallowglass and maybe even Philip! As for the shadowed man himself I still cannot picture anyone but Richard :)
This is A GREAT cast you've selected!
Do keep Kate as your first choice for Diana Bishop. :) She has several qualities that Diana has. Vulnerability, fragility, a great intelligence, a tender spot for romance, physical strength, and a stubbornness. Of course, there is the 'chemistry' between Diana's and Matthew's actors that will provide the obvious and decision however.
Believable adjustments can be made for other characters...red hair for Baldwin's character can be dyed, and excellent aging makeup can be used for Marte's warm-hearted character.
Again, this is a great selection! Thanks for sharing.

best choise!
Yay!! NICE job. I. Can't. Wait.
Great cast, actually. The one I think fits best is Adrian Brody for Gerbert. You just nailed it! I'd love to know who you would choose for Gallowglass, Fernando or Jack... or even Benjamin!! That evil seed... :3
From the moment I "saw" Matthew watching Diana in the library I pictured him played by Goran Visnjic; tall, dark, and extremely handsome with a bit of an accent...!
hey this was fab and i loved your casting!!!
OMG !! BEST IDEA EVER MARION COTILLARD AS YSABEAU !!!!!!! for Saran and Em i always think of Dana Delany and Patricia Clarkson, but i love the idea of Helen Mirren , and for Marth i think of Lena Olin. i wonder who do you imagine for Juliette's character ???
After watching Doctor Who, Hamish is almost made for him. I would say Benidict Cumberland (from Sherlock) would make a good Matthew as well
I can't help but think that Luke Evans would be a great Matthew
Milene Brinco I’m on bird with this idea!
I agree with you. I' ve heard only about 1/4 the audiobook yet, but in the description of Matthew Clairmont I had immediately Richard Armitage in my mind (and this not just because I'm a fan of him). The description fits almost 100% on him; Matthew has gray eyes, Richard Blue-Gray (more blue than gray in my opinion), but otherwise.
Great casting!
Good job...let's do it now!
yes great cast .
love your ideea of davis tennant.
but i would chosse donna noble as marthe .
HELL YES TO DAVID TENNANT!!!
Whow!! Great work!!! I'm not sure about Kate Winslet...I think that Daniela Denby-Ashe could be a great Diana, for her strong personality...also she worked yet with Richard in N&S...greetings for the other cast ^^
Oh, have you seen him in "Thor" or "The Avengers" as Loki? lol He got my attention the second he came on the screen lol.Well to each his own. He was just popped into my head when I read the description of Matthew. I read somewhere that he's already gonna play as vampire in "Only Lovers Left Alive" movie. lol
I totally agree on Richard for first place, but as stated below, Matt Bomer is under-appreciated and fabulous.
i agree for most of them exept Kate Winslet for Diana. Also i wonder who would be most appropriate for Galowglass .
I habe not every time the same opinion as you but I love your idea for Diana Matthew Marcus and Miriam
PS: sorry for my bad english i'm from Germany
David Tennant as Hamish? Yes! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought of him as Hamish when I read the book. :D I like the choice of Kate Winslet as Diana and just LOVE the choice of Marion Cotillard as Ysabeau. :) Although I have always pictured Tom Hiddleston as Matthew, not Richard Armitage so I'm having trouble seeing anyone else in that role. lol
Thanks for all the comments, everyone :) I love reading about the choices you would have made, and I am of course especially thrilled by all of you who agree with me :) And for the record; yes, I did choose a too young Marthe. ;) I just really like Juliette.
What about Monica Belucci as Ysabeau? That's who I pictured when reading.
Oh yes Biscuit. I'd love to see the film with your cast. I think you've missed someone though.
I can't remember her name, but she's the witch in the Bodlean, who keeps pestering Diana to join the local coven for sabbats.
Loved all the picks except for Diana and Marthe. I can't see Winslet as Diana and Marthe should be much older. I know they can age her but with so few roles for older leading women, it should go to someone of the appropriate age.
I like your dream :) I really hope that we'll see a movie... Is there any new information about the movie?
a great choice all round i think :)
Cannot wait for the Book of Life...
They should hire you to be the casting director for the movie! You would be perfect! Amazing job!
Love the cast! My main concern IS about Ysabeau's actress... because she is my favorite character and I want the actress to be perfect. Marion Cotillard will do an amazing job, I love her! Thanks for thinking about her... About Kate doing Diana, I think that Diane Kruger would be better, don't you agree?
Thanks :D
seriously well-done! what about jessica chastain for Diana? and if you can find a way to work Gaspard Ulliel in there, heaven!
Very well cast...... The only ones I am not sure of is your casting for Satu..... and Kate winslet I'm on the fence about.... But the rest very well done
Vincent Cassel is perfect for Baldwin!
Love love love. As much as I love Teresa Palmer, I feel like she looks too young for Diana. Not to say that Diana can’t look young, but that I envision a Completely different face. It’s hard for me to imagine Teressa Palmer as I reread ADOW.
Diana was 33 in the first book and Theresa is 34
Yes, I know. It slipped my mind :P I pictured motherly and chose Juliette. I dare say I'd go for someone more appropriately aged if I had the job of casting the actual film ;)
Cheers! :)
Oh, but I SO agree about Richard Armitage. He's a fantastic and thoughtful actor. Perfect. Kate could look younger.
haha I actually pictured Peter Knox like that man !
Where is thomas goode????
I agree on everything except Kate Winslet, and Baldwin is supposed to be a redhead. Awesome pcks, though & Richard Armitage is perfect as Matthew! Reading "The Book of Life" right now! :)
Matthew Goode wasn't far off. Goodness he's gorgeous.
Gallowglass?? But this is a great cast, and i just think that Marion Cotillard would be an excellent Ysabeau *^*
Tou really got a 10 with Vincet Cassel as Balwin and Richard Armitage as Matthew!! and just saying but for me Diana is always kate winslet when I read the book , She is supossed to be already an adult woman, so who cares about Kate's age!! and I was picturing Miriam more liek Rooney Mara, at times , but I must congratulate you!
Diana for me is Diane Kruger.
i wanna watch too much i love this novel cheers :)
My Mathew~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Someone actually thought Jennifer Lawrence would be a good Diana. Although she might be too young, she has proved to be an excellent actress.
Please contemplate Matt Bomer as Matthew
one little mistake- in human age is martha 60 years old
Gillian Chamberlain?
Josh Hartnett: Matthew
THIS IS PERFECT
(except maybe Kate Winslet).
I always imagined Armitage as Matthew!!!
I think Gerard butler for matthew! I always imagine matthew with an accent and older looking than Armitage. And I think that even though Gerard is scottish he would fit perfectly for the accent.
And Diane Kruger is amazing for that part.
I dont agree with the mathew choice but every one else is great!
Yeah, she is a very tiny bit older than Diana. 4 years to be precise. Not really a massive stretch IMHO :) Glad you liked the rest ;-)
i personally prefer Jared Padalecki for Matthew, and a couple of other tweaks here and there, but overall i agree :)
Wrong Diana but the rest of the Cast is brilliant!
Ok I use to think Richard to, but he is to old now, and so is Kate Winslet. Matthew should be played by Matthew Goode, he is the right age and has that look. Diana should be played by Diane Kruger.Richard would have been great 10 years ago.
ksgoo4960 Have to say that I, regretfully, agree that Richard has passed the suitable age to play Matthew. I think he was still good to go when I made the vid 4-5 years ago, but alas time marches on. I have also come to agree with everyone suggesting Diane Kruger :) As for Matthew Goode; nah, don't see it. But in time who knows eh? I used to be against Kruger as well ;-)
Jared's too young IMHO. Cute though ;) Thanks for the comment!
Lots of good suggestions in here! I am 100% in favor of Richard being cast as Matthew. I would also really like to see Stockard Channing as Sarah. There is a huge campaign underway to have Richard cast as Matthew - you should check it out at armitage4clairmont(dot)com
Thank you :) And please do put my name forward. LOL. I'd love that job!
Fernando?
Matt Dallas would be perfect to play Matthew!! OMG!! Please check him out.....perrrrrfect!!!!!
Uhm..just realised I was logged in with my other account, but I'm 'liksomkjeks' as well ;-)
i like more Diane Kruger for Diana but Richard Artmitage for Matthew is perfect!!!!!
but martha is 60 years old
oh and James Franco as Nathaniel
richard armitage
ETA: Actually.... Jared would make a pretty awesome Marcus, if Ryan couldn't do it :)
i liked it except i think kate winslet is a bit old to play diana
Shadow of Night was o.k.
The sex scene left much to be desired; This is Vampire sex after all, I mean, hasn't D.Harkness ever heard of Anne Rice or my most beloved: Anita Blake by Laurel K. Hamilton.
Thumbs Up if you've read S.o.K and agree the sex scene was disappointing.
Enjoyed this effort but disagree about one character. Kate Winslet as Diana. I want someone new, someone fresh, a completely unknown actress for this role.
But he's most definitely tall enough :)
everyone but kate winslet was a good choice
Disagree completely. Sarah, Em and Marthe are miscast as is Marcus. The only Matthew de C is Matthew Goode. Adrian Brody is too young to play a very ancient vampire. The only one I might agree with is Jim Broadbent as Knox.
Gail Webb Thanks for sharing :) These were simply the faces that appeared in my head as I read the books many moons ago 😊 I love the casting in the series as well, with the exception of Goode unfortunately. He’s a good actor I could just never get used to him as Matthew 🤓
I have no idea who you are, what you do for a living but SHEESH GRRRLLL you are wasting your talent if you are not a casting director already! I adore Kate but have to agree either a complete unknown or Diane Kruger would be a better choice. Do think about Ewan MacGregor as Hamish?
No, justo no
HELL NO
Courtney Blake I can only assume you do not share my opinion 😁 I respect that though. Who do you see as Matthew and Diana? Are you happy with the casting in the series? 😊 I was miffed at first but then it sort of grew on me, though I much prefer the books 🤓
@@liksomkjeks I apologize for my reaction, lol. I had just finished rewatching the 1st season and discovered they're green lit for a 2nd & 3rd. So I couldn't imagine anyone else taking their places ❤ I've fallen in love with their on screen characters and I only recently discovered they were based off of books to begin with! Do you recommend that I read the books? I'm afraid too many things will have been changed about the story and God forbid I might not like it!
Courtney Blake I recommend the books, and I think they stayed pretty true to them so far, so can’t imagine they’d disappoint 😊 I managed to read the trilogy twice before the series, which meant I was rather attached to my own imagined characters, so (as I said) getting used to the actual casting was a bit hard 😁
@@liksomkjeks Thank you for your input! I see we have much in common as far as both of us enjoying the characters. However we're both on a bit of a different page if you will 😉 Since posting this, I've downloaded the Audible version and I'm listening to the 1st book!
Hey, what do you think about the British actor, Callum Blue for Matthew? I've always liked him. Have you seen Dead Like Me?
