Japan has been running high speed bullet trains since the early to mid 1960's, I seen a picture of the first bullet train in Japan on the front page of the Sunday edition of the Philadelphia Bulletin in late June,1963 when I lived in Ridley Park,PA just outside Philadelphia. My late father told me that is the future of passenger trains.
I marvel at the politeness of taking call away from other passengers. It's this Japanese concept called "Manners". Luckily in the UK we are far too sophisticated for that sort of nonsense to catch on!
"Train network" is another advantage of Japan. Different companies' trains get into each others railroads for example. Major stations are not in terminal style so that transferring from train to train to train is very smooth and convenient. Another difference is its super busy scheduling. The busiest commuting trains come and leave in every three minutes. Even Shinkansen trains leave and arrive in every 10 minutes at Tokyo station. Trains are massive people movers in Japan with ten times more energy efficient than passenger cars. Much safer also.
Everyone is so huppy to help, every train is on time and inside the trains people is totall quiet (because they are playing with their phones) I loved the transportation in japan!
Re your comment on mobile phones at 3:20: It's not really correct that "You can talk on your mobile phone anywhere you like". Whilst phone use is not illegal, in Japan it is considered socially unacceptable to speak on a mobile phone on a train around other passengers. On long-distance trains, it is expected that if you need to make a call you will go to the enclosed vestibule area at the end of the carriage so as not to be heard. On suburban/local trains - don't try it.
werrongboy here in the UK you hear every single detail about bimbo's sex life and the Benefits' current family affairs. If you ask them to keep it down, you get verbally abused.
One thing I noticed the difference between European trains and Japanese trains is the height and clearance of the platform against the train floor. Japanese platform is almost the same height as train floor and barely any clearance between the train body and the platform which makes it much easier to carry on a baby stroller or wheel chair. It makes me wonder why other countries don't do the same.
ironically his discussion about the tickets and knowing the exact price was for a subway ticket. Not a shinkansen or JR ticket. They have way more sophisticated ticketing using SUICA and PASSMO cards that you can also use for payment at many other places, not just on the trains and buses, ( and it covers a huge area of the country, not just in Tokyo) . Meanwhile the Oyster card in the UK is only usable around London , and cannot be used for anything else!
Who said the UK was the first to launch e-Ticketing systems for railways, Japan and many other Asian countries (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea) are ahead in this field by far, we could use these payment types at vending machines, fast-food chains, conveniences stores etc... And of course there shouldn't be restaurant service aboard, since it lacks service efficiency, and Japanese Railway journey times are by far quicker than UK trains.
Excellently presented. 5 Stars ~ Though what you can carry from Japan can't necessarily be applied into the UK system that easy. You're talking two different systems, mindsets & cultures. But UK has its own wonderful Railway system & culture, anyway and the Japanese must have studied it to implement some of it into their own system.
I have always wondered, what does it feel like when these trains are moving at top speed? Can you feel it or is it like an airplane where you dont feel the g force or anything?
Railfan Bryan It generally feels like nothing - as in there is no noticeable pressure. The ride is also surprisingly smooth. You could keep a glass of water uncovered on the tray table and it will not spill.
+s0nnyburnett just because manners are a relic doesn't mean we can still learn from it. and there are some places where the customer did not know they wanted it until they had it. most people here in the US rarely understand the potential of having a high speed rail system, let alone understanding the current western system we live in is not natural or really that sustainable.
Interstellar bruce We want high speed rail, but then you get organizations like the Japan California High Speed Rail Consortium that embezzle money and never lay any track after years and years.
s0nnyburnett when the American government try to get such a system. They fail because the government is fighting it's self from the inside. If one side wants one thing the other hates it. A high speed rail system in the US is going to need to be private first. There is a company currently getting investment from Japan and American investors called texas central railway. That plans to bring the n700 to the us. Most people approve because it's private, and not government. It has little opposition right now, and the government already approved the route. The only opposition is coming from people who are ignorant about the bullet train
Everything is wonderful in Japan But here in Saudi Arabia have a lot of money and do not have a train like Japan I'm very sad for our situation ، I hope to live a better life in the near future .
Excellent film. Thank you for making it. Can I just amend your information about using mobile phones onboard a train in Japan? You cannot use a mobile phone in your seat. If you want to receive or make a call you must move to the entryway at the end of the carriage so you don't disturb the other passengers in the carriage. I learned this the hard way. Can you imagine that happening on a train in the West? Cheers David
ITS VERY PITTY RIDICULOUS AND REGRETTING KNOWING YOUR TRAIN IN 20KM IN 3.5 HRs, REALLY SO SAD. WE ARE BANGLADESH INDIA PAKISTAN ALL THESE COUNTRY WILL NEVER BE CHANGED. THOUGH INDIA TRAINS GOOD FASTER BUT CONDITION SO ILL FATED.
Aryan Patel lol r u high? have u seen jeruselum? it's a shithole now especially with reference to it's glorious past. superpower? think u need another hit on the head m8
Actually, they should looked at the way the unions differ in Britain and Japan. Strikes are common in one country, and just about unheard of in the other. No prizes for guessing which is which.
The reason strikes are almost unheard of in Japan is because they are satisfied with their conditions. Westerners don't really have a mentality of satisfaction especially if there are many problems. Also Japanese don't like voicing their dissatisfaction as it causes too much commotion which they do not like as it affects other people
The rail staff in the UK do not need to take lessons from the Japanese, it's the British travelling public that need the lessons especially when it comes to using manners and making sure to give yourself plenty of time so you don't miss your train.
Chakans..? A society that says that women can't drive, or can be outside without a male escort, or tortures people because they are atheists is not a very nice place...
Yes, there are perverts/idiots in every country. But countries that are civilized put away THEM. They do not hide the women, even if it's supposedly for "their own sake". And they usually don't chop of people's heads either.
I may B hallucinating, are there situations where they have people employed to push the passengers on to the train in order to allow the doors to close. If that's not the case, then I promise no more champagne, just coffee. Welcome to the Fore!
Thats correct. This video is misleading. The part where the video shows him buying thicket from the machine are for metros and normal trains. I am not sure how one would actually buy a Shinkansen ticket since I never used one before. I didn't see any option for Shinkansen on the ticket machines for the regular trains.
You can buy Shinkansen tickets at the main stations such as Tokyo and Shinagawa in their specific areas. No Shinkansen does not cost $2. Depending on where you are going $30 - 120.
We in America should learn a few things from Japan Railways. Like elevators for the disabled. America isn't very disabled friendly especially in Chicago where I live. There's two L Lines that run on tracks that are on an embankment that is over a hundred years old and far beyond their lifetime usability and most of the stations on it well let's say that most of them from Belmont going north is not accessible to people with disabilities. We're more of a third world country compared to Japan and it's trains and that's bad. Well hopefully Trump being he's from New York City and he most likely knows that having a public transit that's able to benefit everyone the disabled included. I hope Trump fast tracks and make it easier for transit agencies to get the funds to pay for transit projects like here in Chicago for the CTA Red and Purple Lines. That's the main reason I supported Trump because I had enough with people not giving more money to public transit. Not everyone has a car to get to places and not everyone wants to drive to work there's people who prefers public transit over cars and they need to support them too not the highway system.
briansivley2001 says: "America isn't very disabled friendly especially in Chicago where I live..." == That's what Japanese used to say by comparing other countries and themselves. They worked on it. I'd give them credit for their effort.
what a discipline and awesome technology. We in india are may be 100 years behind them. Dirt filth everywhere especially pan stains .I am sure we will never catch up with them at all.
one thing' s...that's they don't have.. in Japan... the bouncing train... like in third world country...which we can dancing and moonwalking....!!!!@@!!

Self respect is what I learnt from Japan. Tokyo is what London could be like in 100 years time.

At the busiest rush hour, the Shinkansen departs every 3 minutes, and the subway trains departs every 1 min. and 50 sec.

I wish this culture would spread to more countries.
Great video! I've been to Japan in 2006 and used their railways. They were excellent and I think the mobile phone idea is a very good one.
Second to none best train service on the planet. And I've been to many different countries.
No wonder why they are most disciplined and respectful people in the world 👌👌👌👍👍👍

Wow ilove Japan so much..good transportation
Aisa is butiful train's in japan from India
Uk needs a separate compartment for the yobs
you are going to go far!
Meanwhile in the US,Amtrak chuggs along their version of high speed rail is like rolling along on square wheels.
Not funny at all but I have a similar impression.

Britain helped Japan to start and build its rail network in the 19th century.

We exported Buddhism but never imported anything from them say technology , discipline.
こうして見るとみんなまじめに働いているなと思い、今以上に安心して鉄道を利用できる気がしました。
You copy everything. But none of it will work in the west where "the customer is always right" and basic manners and respect are relics of the past.

Very useful video . Could u please tell me is ladies and men are seated separate ?
Why would men and women be seated separate from each other? That's only in Saudi Arabia and other horrid places.
Jan Kivisaar It's not horrid , it's safe from CHAKANS ..
