The hold fast for round stock brilliant wish i would have seen that thought of that earlier. keep up the good work love to see southern blacksmith I don't loose anything in translation
Blacksmith, "King of the craftsmen". Everyone can come to the blacksmith to have their tools made, but the blacksmith makes theirs and their own. Trent, as far as releasing the holdfast, in woodworking we hit the backside of the holdfast to release the clamping pressure and therefore the holdfast. Is there some reason why you hit up from underneath the elbow of the tool rather than striking the backside to release it?
Hey Trenton, great video, my holdfast is made from 1/4 inch round even though my pritchel hole is much bigger and that does work too. I'll have to make a sturdier one soon though. That round stock holdfast is really interesting, never seen one before. I've only forged 2 sets of tongs yet so I often reheat the tips to adjust to various stock sizes. Might burn up the tongs in a couple years but hey I can always make another pair. Keep up the good work on the videos. They certainly inspired me to get back at the anvil (got to finish my new japanese forge design first) and I'm sure they will inspire others too. Have a great day.
Nice, well done video. I recently came across a holdfast in another person's shop which was designed to go into the haedie hole. The stock was about 5 eights round, and the Hardie hole was about 1". The pritchel hole, which is what I am used to using the holdfast in, was about half inch, so the holdfast which was available did not fit in the pritchel hole. I was a little flummuxed until the owner told me that it was designed to go into the hardie hole. How common is this?
I have a short cutlers anvil. its roughly 8 x 7 inches on the face (35kg). If I make a real short one and taper it a lot, do you think that it will work?
Gotta feed the algorithm. If you get set up on Odysee dot com AND youtube., I could easily give you a tip for this video . Just sayin'. Glad to see you shooting regular videos again. I hope the shop is up and running well. Thanks for the BEGINNER series. I am diggin it!!
Im really enjoying the tool making videos im having a lot of trouble with cold shuts when tong making and im wondering if im forging to cold im using 20mm to 25 mm stock in mild steel using about a 2 to 2.5 pound ball piean hammer and a gas forge any help would be greatly appreciated
Another good one; thanks. FWIW, while I usually find the "please like, subscribe, and comment" type things a little annoying, yours make me laugh. That bit of creativity, originality you bring to it turn it from a liability to an asset.
I really enjoy all your videos, and have been working through your recent bloom of them. However, there are times when I have 10 minutes to watch them, and others where I have hours. When I click on the list of subscribed videos I haven't watched,, there is nothing to tell he how long the video is. I have to start a video and have to stop watching half-way through. I doubt there's anything you can do to fix this whine, but just had to vent. Keep up the great work
Roubo bench woodworkers live and die by these. Love mine. Might have to commission some from local blacksmith now. Thanks for the video!
I’ll be coming back and rewatching all these when I get my stuff set up. Love the videos and tips and tricks. Thanks Trenton
Thanks for this a simple solution to a frustrating problem. And a true novice will really benefit from these.
Words to live by "tooling is King"
Thank you for these videos and sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for the video. I have used holdfast that others have made but had never seen one made before.

The algorithm is now going to be happy. I came I saw I commented. Thanks for the lesson.
Awesome, thanks!
Keep the videos coming. Very informative
the sweet holdfast memory, mine can together so simple. Finished that then had 2 scoops of ice cream with the kids. Good times right there.
Have enjoyed your videos!!! Keep up the good work!
Another good one!
I release mine with just a little tap on the back, near the bend, hitting toward the horn. Love the adaptation for round stock!!!
I don’t know why I didn’t think of one specially for round stock. Cheers.
Love the videos, please keep it up.
Thanks, will do!
Awesome! I was yelling at the screen for this when you were making the fireplace tool rack.. Thanks Trent!

Thank you sir this video was very helpful
Yet another great video.
If you whack it on the back, just below the bend, it'll release easier

Thanks ill try to use a more rounded edge the next time I forge tongs dose this also apply to other projects like corners on ornamental forging
Yes, thats why most anvil have a two or three inch section of edge that is rounded over. It helps to prevent that cold shut.
Thanks
A holdfast to fit round stock? Boooooom.. my mind just blew up.
Looking forward to my first case of blacksmiths elbow... Maybe...

What would be kind of a good tong to a beginner who is slack on cash to get yo start working I thought about a wolf jaw thoughts please
The tongs should be made to the stock you are using!
@@purgatoryironworks are wolf jaw tongs that have a couple of the smaller sizes something that you would recommend as a very first pair

Elementary blacksmithing skills, Quentin. ;) when do we go to forge welding?

I would almost bet its because you are using a sharp edge on your anvil.
T'was brillig!
If youwhack your hold down in the back it will pop out
Flopping a wet noodle at it🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s what she said
I think each video should have a thumbnail and title that fits the video. Its not easy for me to know what videos im looking at just scrolling through
Working on it!
Tap the back side of that hold down.

If you look under the play bar, it has a time stamp that tells you how long the video is.
