    Very nice job. You give us the basics and leave us free to interpret and express our own. Thanks.

    Always been facinated about metals, being a knife guy I hope to one day be a maker. Not for selling, just to make my dream blade. This info really helps me get started. Thanks a ton Sir.

    Your videos are an endless inspiration, I don't have a great setup, just two old bbq's and a few old tools, but I think I might give this leaf a try.

    I have been making knives and doing fairly well selling them but there is just so much competition selling too cheaply to be worth while. I have now started making some other things, like pendants and key chains. This was a great lesson on leaf making, thank you for taking the time to make the video.

    Very cool project. I'm amazed at how long the thin stem stays bright orange. On my anvil within a second or two of hammering thin material mine fades from orange to red to gray. Maybe my anvil is too cold from being stored outside.

  • @MrSeppii
    @MrSeppii 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I loved this easy to understand demonstrations but I didn't quite get how he managed to center the stem, first it was off center and in the next close up its perfectly centered, did he just do it with the pliers?

  • @workingwithiron
    @workingwithiron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Nobody saw it, it did not happen.... unfortunately doing that causes a cold shut which is why so many peoples leaves break off when doing it like that.

  • @retandom

    For curiosity's sake is there a reason you didn't draw out the stem before cutting it?

    • @purgatoryironworks
      @purgatoryironworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont like trying to "taper into" a thicker piece. I find it invites cold shuts. Just not my preference.

    When you quench in oil, what kind of oil do you use, and why (or why not)?

    • @abdulwahabalobaid8448
      @abdulwahabalobaid8448 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      water makes it harder
      oil makes it safer
      using water means yr taking the risk to break yr thing thats what i know

    • @billygildark4565
      @billygildark4565 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      wahab x I’m no professional quench, temper, heat treat specialist but it depends on what material your using. There are steels that are oil hardening like 5160 or 4140 there is s7 and h13 that are air hardening and steels that are water hardening like old samurai swords.
      Any non hardening steel is safe to water quench.

    I'm just getting started and haven't made my mind up on Coal or Gas. You said with power (gas) comes responsibility. What exactly were you referring to? Other than the safety factors I mean.

      He made a mistake, I think he actually was referring to coal forges. They definitely get hotter than gas, and it's well known that they can get so hot that they ruin projects.

    Anyone have a good base price for selling something like this? It's a bit more involved than similar sized "quick" trinkets, but a little more time goes into these than say, meat skewers.
