I was a pilot as well as A and P mech on corporate 1-11 aircraft. I loved flying that plane. But with the noise levels of those Speys, I now say huh, and what all the time. It was worth it. How I miss those days.
Best Plane ever!! Hurrrah for the Rolls Royce Spey Engines!! I flew as achild often from Hamburg with BEA to Berlin. Great Memorys of a little boy who felt that the Lineris so big! Thank you very much!!
As an aircraft engineer in the UK I worked on several BAC 1-11s during my early career. I can say, with hand on heart that the engine starter motor on the 1-11 was one of the most complex units ever! Called the Constant Speed Drive Starter (CSDS) it was a large, heavy unit attached to the engine gearbox. Not only did it provide drive to start the engine but also regulated the speed of the electrical generator. A marvel of design and engineering, and unique in sound 👍🏻
I don't think the 1-11's had air starters, I believe they are hydraulic which is why they sound the way they do. Air starters don't sound like that, they aren't that loud and usually a loud woosh of air at initial start. Most everything is air start except for the smaller biz jets. Those are usually electric. I know for sure that some industrial Speys are hydraulic start.
So did I. USAIR had a Saturday flight sale for over two years from Toledo through Pittsburgh to any destination. $49 round trip if you left on a Saturday and came back on Tuesday and you got free miles. Flew to a lot of places, just because I could. Most flights were on these wonderful British jets.
That is a SPEY symphony in wonderful Stereo....it reminds me of my ride in HZ-BL1 to JFK from LHR in the 1980s...a trip never to eb forgotton with three engine starts at LHR, SNN and BGR...
But then you're gonna be bombarded with dozens of lawsuits. LOL Yes, I've encountered a non-hushkit 1-11 taking off dozens of times. It could wake up the dead for miles around with that extreme ly deafening engine roar.
Yes it was a great plane after they solved the super stall issue that killed key company personnel on a test flight. It pancaked on the ground with almost no forward speed. It's a high flying tail masking issue that I think was solved by putting stall strips on the wings but I might be wrong on that.
The prototype elevators only had manual servo tabs, changed to hydraulically powered elevators after the deep-stall accident. Also the inner portion of the wing had its aerofoil changed to give inverse camber to promote root stall and pitch-down. You can see the change in the root leading edge in the clip. All the new info passed freely to Douglas and others to prevent further accidents.
Have you encountered a 1-11 taking off up close?? I have and I don't know your definition of "good". The noise of the non-hushkit BAC 1-11 taking off is extremely deafening. You have to cover your ears to avoid your eardrums getting damaged.
How did that thing ever fly !!?? I mean seriously... that plane has engines the same size as your average small learjet, and the same number, and we're not talking a Gulfstream jet engine size here, and yet it is at least twice the size and weight !!
@@Dum.-. Type 'trident 1c g-arpc' into TH-cam, put your headphones on and crank up the volume. Okay, the Trident was a BAC One Eleven on steroids, but you'll get the general idea of what Rolls Royce Spey engines sounded like.
If I have to crank up my volume with headphones on for the 1-c and the 1-11 is only a fraction then is it not the loudest thing out there? Also I was referring to the video itself and how it doesn’t do justice to the real BAC one eleven irl
I love the engine start sound. It brings back memories. Great plane
Best sounding aircraft startup ever!

Freaking awesome engine sound! WOW!!!
Used to work on these. Sounds even more amazing in person

What a sound, beautiful looking aircraft too.
Sounded even better inside
That's the sound of the air-driven engine starter motor. Love it!

I love the Spey spooling up too. Funny enough, the BAC111 was made two miles down the road.
No it wasn't?
Non-reved many times PIT-GSO on USAir in the mid 80's. Absolutely fell in love with this aircraft.✈️

Lovely vintage aircraft with the small engines
Small but deafening!
Ian M - flymajj You should have heard them before the noise suppressors were installed.
Thank you!
@@All_NoingI did!
Rode on USAir, Florida Express, and Braniff2 BAC111's. COOL airplane!!!
That engine start up always my favorite sound
I wish my RC Model BAC 1-11 Sounded that good!
They use to fly these in to Longisland MacArthur Airport in the 80s. Love watching them back then.
Makes me proud to be British....
This was so awesome !! Loved getting hit by that jet blast at the end. Ah, the smell of burnt kerosene.
:)
I love Bac-111s,used to go to Costa Rica on Lacsa Airlines,They had Bac-111s,pleanty of nose and smoke the way jets should be.
Proper jet engines 👍
Beautiful Aircaft.
English jet classic ! Pretty Bird in my opinion...
That 111 would really sound good without the hush kit.
@flymajj Are those hush kits fitted on the back of the engines?? Great video!!
What was the building under which the One Eleven was parked?
It is the Business Jet Center FBO at Dallas Love Field. The BEST FBO !!
Nice livery .
@dave4shmups Yes thats a hush kit! If I owned that aircraft, I would remove them!
How old is this particular aircraft??
55 yo as of this year
But then you're gonna be bombarded with dozens of lawsuits. LOL
Yes, I've encountered a non-hushkit 1-11 taking off dozens of times. It could wake up the dead for miles around with that extreme ly deafening engine roar.
Oh Believe me it did - Absolute "Crackling" thunder - Louder than John Bonhams Drum kit
Not exactly, but both aircrafts use Rolls-Royce Spey engines.

Missed the sound of this plane.. soo annoyiiiinnngg🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The jalousies of our house vibrates a lot during take off and landing🤣🤣🤣
Old SPEY engines
Classic airliner. They don’t make ‘em that way anymore - same as cars, modern birds don’t have character anymore.
The One Eleven was special. One of my favourite aircraft.
@@flymajj these used to serve my hometown airport of Rouyn-Noranda, Canada in the late 70s - early 80s. The carrier was Québecair.
@@richardkallio3868 They certainly looked good in Québecair livery. I actually flew to Rouyn-Noranda on a Nolinor Convair 580 a few years ago.
Ah, aircraft from an ear before environmentalists tried to make everything quiet. You can't beat the sound of an old jet.
If you have to live near a busy airport you will learn to appreciate quiet (and efficient) modern engines.

.. and why would you be standing up close to ANY plane taking off? Not real smart.
The Trident was even louder!
Will, just remember that the User to fly in and out of Berlin-Tempelhof.
How did that thing ever fly !!?? I mean seriously... that plane has engines the same size as your average small learjet, and the same number, and we're not talking a Gulfstream jet engine size here, and yet it is at least twice the size and weight !!
Not only did they fly ,they thundered off up into the clouds with a deafening roar ,not limp like the modern jet hairdryer sounding engines .
In comparison to aircraft size those engines are tiny, hard to believe it will fly...
Apron safety doesn't appear to be a priority in this sequence.
Fucking hellfiire.
The only romanian aiplane ever built
😂
That was the license-built ROMBAC One Eleven.
Guess, you must be really really rich to operate a jet like this!
Hushkitted and still noisy!
the bac 1-11 came first but soon after the niner came and destroyed the 1-11 :S
Easy; they came first.
Not even that loud. It sucks
If you'd ever heard one taking off, you'd disagree!
@@flymajjyou ever be to a terminal with 10 b-717s those are loud
